On his fourth release, and first of all-original material, Composer-producer Paul Schwartz explores themes inspired by the night. He generates a lush, dreamy sound that will appeal to fans of Enigma, William Orbit, and Caroline LaVelle. In fact, some of Earthbound echoes the feeling of LaVelle's 1995 album, Spirit, as well as Orbit's work on Madonna's Ray of Light.

Known for placing sampled and re-edited opera classics over orchestrations and dance grooves on the classical crossover hits Aria and Aria 2, Schwartz now invokes different combinations of neoclassical music, dance grooves, and ethereal pop, and he deploys a 30-piece orchestra on many of these new tracks. Vocalist Lisbeth Scott lends her talents to several compositions, including the poppy electronica of "The Dark of the Night" and the heavily orchestrated "Ravens," which features a haunting string melody to match the poignant and morose lyrics. Folk singer Tara MacLean sings on the downtempo pop of the title track, while the composer delivers a solemn piano "Nocturne" to end the album. While Earthbound treads a lot of familiar ground, Schwartz makes his nocturnal musings warm and welcoming. --Bryan Reesman

5 out of 5 stars Well done.......2007-02-22

A nice selection of compositions with rich vocals. Different than Aria and State of Grace but equally enjoyable in its own right.

5 out of 5 stars Romantic, melodic and haunting.......2004-11-04

Paul Schwartz was new to me when I discovered his State of Grace albums, then realized he also authored the Aria albums. I found I really love his melodies, the pure voices of the female vocals, the arrangements which remind me of Bill Douglas, and the solid piano playing. This is very professional and very satisfying work. I can't recommend it highly enough!
If you are a new romantic this is an album for you. I keep replaying it and joyfully revelling in the lilting melodies. This ia very up-to-date and utterly beautiful music.
Have a listen to State of Grace II as well. You won't believe the beautiful arrangements!

While a BIG fan of Aria 2: New Horizons ... I found Earthbound to be bland and was disappointed with the album as a whole. I am new to his music and found some of the past reviews for Earthbound misleading. Overall: more oppresive, less uplifting.

Anyone commenting, please feel free to point us to the more climactic and better written work (I highly recommend Aria 2).

4 out of 5 stars I feel like movin'.......2004-03-18

Music has always "moved" me all my long life. When I heard "Earthbound" I listened over and over, which is unusual for me. I had loaned the cd from our local library and knew I wanted to buy it for my own collection. I'll certainly checked into other material by this artist. My soul absolutely soured when I hear the first selection! Thank you for this creation!

5 out of 5 stars swimming in a river of stars.......2004-01-24

If I had but a handful of CDs to take with me on a deserted island this would be one of them! Paul Schwartz is a remarkable composer for he's succeeded time and time again to broaden the confining barriers of classical music, providing a modern twist that'll appeal to a wider audience, but without taking away from the pureness of the genre either with the common use of too much electronics. His trademark sound of ethereal singing with lush, ambient melodies breathtakingly accenting instruments such as violins, cellos and harps are always unmistakable but 'Aria I' & 'Aria II: New Horizon' chiefly featured the powerful voice of Rebecca Luker, giving popular pieces such as "Ave Maria" and "Ebben" more of an operatic air to them, while here on 'Earthbound' things are toned down a bit with folk singer Tara MacLean lending her gorgeous voice to the amazing, heartrending title track and Lisbeth Scott gracing many of the selections with her pristine beauty that's sure to send shivers (but in a good way) down your spine, as she does me. I also love the magical lyrics which can be heard throughout the album with only three instrumentals: 'I dream a dark caressing ocean shore. The moon has drawn me to its side. I glimpse the shadow of a mystery that floats beyond my fingers as I cry. And the stars shine on the dune. And I see you in the moonlight.' "Nevermore" is probably my favorite piece with the lovely Emily Aylmer and Ruth Cahill on vocals.

One thing I respect about Paul's new direction and apparent growth as a musician in his most recent projects is his ability to conduct and orchestrate original material (with a few exceptions, of course) without excessively borrowing from past repertoires that have been polished countless times over. It's tarnishing originality and I'm frankly becoming bored with most crossover acts these days so, for now, I'll be turning back to this and the rest of his releases instead of buying most of the unnecessary waste that's been coming out lately. Paul is extremely gifted with diverse talents that shine through in his music, which is moving and very awe-inspired and I'd recommend this to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars give her a chance!!!!!.......2006-10-13

After reading all of the reviews for this album, iam totally shocked. First of all, i think people are expecting an electronic zero 7 sound. Thats what you are not going to get, thank god. Sophie has made a charming organic smooth album. Mostly acoustic guitar with that gorgeous voice is all she needs. Robin guthrie from the cocteau twins adds his atmosperic guitar edge on 4 cuts, which are worth buying the album alone! Sophies biggest mistake on her debut was not letting robin produce the whole thing. His etheriel sound compliments her voice just perfect. But, make no mistake, the rest of the album is worth the buy.

5 out of 5 stars it works for me..........2006-03-20

i actually prefer this to the zero 7 albums. i give it 5 stars not because it blows me away but because i can listen to it all the way through. this is PERFECT winter music. 'stop me' and 'start me' would have to be my favorites. i love the dreamy guitars - i think robin guthrie had something to do with it? at any rate, it's a beautiful album and i'd recommend it to almost anyone.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre offering.......2006-03-10

I found a few songs on this album charming but overall found it to be a mediocre offering.

5 out of 5 stars this is what you call real music..........2005-12-01

I'm sorry, but most of the other reviewers obviously don't know what real, interesting music is...'Earthbound'. This album is interesting as it is fresh, and PROFESSIONAL reviewers also comment on how amazing this album is.

My advice to those critics slamming this album is don't try and review good music...you're no good at it.

This album is fantastic and a real godsend in the days of trash. Each track is individual and possess the qualities of perfect music. If you're looking for Zero 7, this may not be what you're looking for. But if you want to hear proper music that is actually interesting, I suggest this small investment.

4 out of 5 stars NOT zero 7 BUT shopie barker.......2005-11-09

i don't understand the other reviewers, this is a great album, it's a sohpie barker album, very different & fresh. i recommend it when you're taking a bath after a long work day.
i'm waiting for the new zero 7 album (coming out soon) but this is a great way of waiting it.. not the best of the year but honestly.. very pleasent.

the minimalism is here, simplicity after all. enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Not to be missed!!!.......2007-04-30

This CD is simply excellent! Anybody who ever cared for TV soundtracks should give it a chance. The only better thing is Barry Gray's music for "UFO" TV series, which has been promised from Silva Screen (and has been published by "Fanderson" and since sould out). So, whatever somebody think of the series, this music will not fail to delight. Impressive and nostalgic, mysterious and enthralling, this music really deserves to be heard by everybody.

5 out of 5 stars Great year one compilation.......2007-01-09

This remastered version of Space:1999 year one or series one sounds excellent. It is very clear and you can better appreciate Barry Gray wonderful job.

If you are Space:1999 fan, it is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent CD.......2006-07-27

Talk about bringing back memories. The music is crisp-clear & updated. For the 1999 fans-this is a must have.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Future Score.......2005-04-01

Space:1999 - the series - may be one of the most controversial SF shows ever. People either love it, or they hate it... there seems to be little middle ground. As a kid I was thrilled with the series, although even then I could see the weaknesses in science, story, and characterization. But from a purely visual and aural standpoint, the first series rarely disappointed.

Especially when it came to the music. As many fans know, Barry Gray scored only 4 episodes - the rest being rounded out by reusing his cues for those episodes, plus liberal doses of library music. This disc gives a good overview of the magnificent music written specifically for the series, as well as a sampling of some of those library cues. As a previous reviewer said, the ultimate soundtrack to the series was released several years ago by the Fanderson organization ( which one had to join as a member to be able to order ) and is sadly out of print. Copies can be found on the internet, often selling for prohibitive prices. Unless you are a diehard collector, willing to shell out a good sized portion of your paycheck, this single disc is the way to go.

Sound quality is superb, and in some cases surpasses the previously mentioned two disc set, as several of the tracks have been remastered to remove wow, flutter, and distortion that could be heard on the Fanderson set. The main title was remixed to make it truer to the on-screen version, and the tracks from the episode "Black Sun" are in stereo on CD here for the first time ever. The previous release featured the episode's complete score, but only as a monophonic version, as many of the multitrack masters for that particular episode have been lost. For that alone, this disc is worth owning, even if you have the Fanderson set.

However, it is Gray's music that is the true reason to own this soundtrack - regardless of your feelings about the series. Full bodied, sweeping, emotional and grand... not at all your typical seventies television soundtrack. Years before John Williams revived the popularity of orchestral scores for science fiction projects, Barry Gray was filling small screen speakers with epic music that would have sounded perfectly at home in a motion picture theatre.

5 out of 5 stars Space 1999 Year One Soundtrack Available Once Again!.......2005-03-09

I give this soundtrack 5 stars only because the soundtrack is awesome, but if you want a more complete compilation, you need to find the Fanderson version.
The year 1 music definately set the tone for the TV show back in 1975. It gave it beautiful character and feeling for the show. It was ashame that for the second year that they had changed so much (even the music) and lost that character and feeling (but that is a whole other debate).
In 1976, RCA records released the year 1 soundtrack with a beautiful gate fold cover and for about 20+ years, that is all we had, until Fanderson. The year 1 soundtrack is no longer available through them, but it is the most complete. This CD, however, does well to capture the feeling of year 1 and does throw an additional track for you sun bathers out there. It is a nice 30 year anniversary gift to myself. Happy 30th Birthday: SPACE 1999!!!

I first heard Billy on 88.5 here in Philly and just by chance, was able to catch a show at the the Tin Angel. Fell right in his groove but soon lost the cd. 4 years later and I just found him again and purchased another copy. This is a powerful work of art. It's a shame that Billy did not get more coverage. His craft is outstanding. Treat yourself to this cd (if you can still get one....)

        Enjoy!

        5 out of 5 stars wow.......2003-11-14

I recovered this CD from a pile of my brother's old ones when he moved out. Billy Mann is by far one of the most talented and emotional songwriters and musicians I have ever heard. I can't believe that it's out of print. His self-titled CD is also amazing. I'm particularly fond of "how do I say goodbye," but the entire cd is a gem.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums!.......1999-08-29

An absolute success. I saw Billy in concert and bought his album for one reason: he and I share last names. Buying that CD turned out to be one of my best music purchases ever! I am constantly listening to CD, and love every song. You can't help but sing along too, because the lyrics are so real. Grab Billy's CD now--trust me, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Can't believe this one got under the radar!.......1999-05-30

How is it that an album with this much depth, fun, and creativity gets unnoticed? I found this purely on accident, and it is still in constant rotation for me. "Beat Myself Up" is a total singalong, and then he switches gears and rips your heart out with "Said It All". If you like good songwriting, and great vocals, grab this now.

5 out of 5 stars Discover this undiscovered talent!.......1999-02-22

I enjoyed Billy Mann's first album tremendously, but he outdid himself with Earthbound. His songwriting got better on Earthbound, and songs as diverse as "How Do I Say Goodbye" and "Make God Laugh" make you want to comfort him and laugh with him at the same time. I tell my friends that if they buy this album and don't like it, I'll refund the money for them. So far, I haven't had any requests for refunds!

3 out of 5 stars too bad about the sound........2007-03-10

This record probably should never have been released because the sound is really bad. Takes away from what is really a set of good performances. It does, however, contain one of the best versions of schizoid man ever caught on tape. Fripp absolutely burns on this one. He had come a long way since 1969. I like the loose jam numbers too. Mel Collins is a great sax player and his work on this record is excellent. Ian Wallace's drumming is good too. A better band musically than the "Islands" record would lead you to think. Be sure to pick up "ladies of the road" for a much better sounding live show from this tour.

3 out of 5 stars This isn't all that bad.......2006-12-15

Yes, it is an official bootleg recording and the sound suffers mostly due to the fact that this was recorded on cassettes straight from the mixing board. I disagree however with the opinion that this sounded worse on record. The original Japan import of this I had years ago on record actually sounded better. Thank you Tower records. I think that this is probably due to the fact since cds have a higher resolution rate they tend to make albums that were subpar recordings sound even more so. The remastering team of Fripp and company did the best they could. If you want a better sounding live album check out King Crimson's official web site and purchase one of the collector's club releases from this time. However, keep in mind that the performances on here are actually pretty good to great. Schizoid Man rocks real hard. Sailor's Tale has some great guitar work by Fripp.Groon show that King Crimson is the "prog rock" British equal to the Grateful Dead.

2 out of 5 stars Good performance, Rough sound.......2006-11-11

My rating must be weighted as thusly:
-Three stars for hardcore Crim-heads, completists or very open minded listeners
-One star for just about anyone else
-so, an everage of 2 stars

Although this CD features somewhat improved sound over the original vinyl (yes, it DID indeed sound worse than this), be warned that this is a bootleg C+ sound quality.

That being said, there is some fairly good music buried under the muddy, oversaturated sound. This is not the tight, focused Crim we've heard before, but a loose (sloppy?) jam version. This reason alone makes it worth a listen for the curious fan. Mel Collins' sax is very up front in the mix, quite different from the studio releases and very jarring on first listen. Fripp's guitar is often buried, Boz Burrell's vocals (which I never liked all that much) are electronically treated (VCS3?) with mixed results. Yet...on the rare occasion I pull this one out to listen to, I find myself enjoying it. I treat it as a stand-alone version of the ever-changing creature that is King Crimson.

There are now better sounding (and performed) recordings of this era and I urge you to serach these out first unless you are a completist or very adventurous.

          5 out of 5 stars Super.......2005-02-19

No words to describe this guy. Unfortunately, he did not record "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" on ths CD. It is the best recording ever. It can be heard on a soundtrack "Forever Mine". The movie is OK, but the acting sucks. Now, the music is something else...

          5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2004-06-24

All I can say is that from the moment that I heard this guy in concert, his songs have stuck in my head. He's got such a great voice and the song-writing ability to go with it, I can't believe he's not better known. I love Ordinary People, it's one of my all time favourite tracks, so hauntingly beautiful. One wonders where he is now...

          5 out of 5 stars Conner Carey!!!!.......2004-05-04

Well what can I say? being a huge Mariah Carey Fan I stumbled across The Conner Reeves "Earthbound" song on a British Complimation Cd and OMG I was shocked to hear that such a voice out there exsists. The album is a must buy, there is 10Trks on it and may fave have to be "Earthbound and Ordinary People" can that man sing. On the reflection of album sales Sadly Telstar records dont represent Conner anymore (There lose not his)instead he has recently been writing hits for the likes of Cher and Tina Turner. Hopefully Conner will find the right representation in the future and give us a follow up to his Earthbound Cd.

          Thanks Conner for the Music...

Oh ya and hence why I wrote Conner Carey.. I think a duet with the woman herself would be the bomb

5 out of 5 stars A soul of soothing essence.......2003-07-13

          Captivating, soulful and sincerely soothing.

Conner Reeves has a beautiful voice, which encaptured me because of his ability to sing from the soul, heart and mind.

There are 10 songs on this album and all written or co-written by Reeves. I found the songs either sassy, sultry, soulful, uplifting or entailed with a tantalizing groove.

Highlights include My Father's Son, Earthbound and Ordinary People.

There are also Brooklyn Funk remixes of some songs, but are not included with this CD.

I finally obtained a copy of this CD but it was very difficult as they are no longer available.

Reeves is an exceptional vocalist and truly talented artist.

I first listened to the album 'Earthbound' in early 1998. Since then, I've purchased loads of cd's, but very FEW artistes come up to Conner Reeves' standard. His soulful voice, combined with high notes in various songs, and the so-meaningful words in each and every track, is just amazing. His cd is first on my list for a 'fave cd of all time' award. His talent is not appreciated enough, but if he got more exposure, I'm positive he would be a hit, and launch another fabulous cd. God knows how many other great ballads he's got written, just waiting to be shared amongst us.
