Cousteau is not the first or last bunch of young men to have lit upon Scott Walker's epically lachrymose solo albums as a design for living. However, very few other bands have trudged in Walker's weary footsteps with quite this much poise. Cousteau is possessed of a confidence rare in debut albums, and the really good news is that Cousteau is often nearly as great as Cousteau clearly think it is. Their stock-in-trade is the grand pop ballad, a form that has been sadly neglected as too many new groups have drifted towards irony to justify a fondness for strings, sweeping tunes, and heartfelt lyrical sentiment (The Divine Comedy, for example). The songs on this album are, without exception, lovely--"The Last Good Day of the Year," indeed, is worthy of being sung by Glen Campbell--and Cousteau plays it resolutely straight, falling in behind the alternately soaring and swooping vocals of Liam McKahey with a versatility that would do either the Bad Seeds or Tindersticks proud. --Andrew Mueller

5 out of 5 stars Freaking great.......2006-02-19

This is an amazing collection of live studio music. The variety of songs and artists is wonderful, it will be hard to wear this out with such different styles of music on this cd. This station and KGSR out of Austin, Tx, do some of the best (if not the best) live compilation cd's that I know of. The bare bones version of Coldplay's Yellow is just amazingly soulful....the Dido contribution is a real surprise too, these are just two of the highlights, but the whole thing is so very good...buy, listen, and enjoy.

Radio station in-house recordings can be hit or miss. The Mountain and others have some really great productions. I wish I had passed on this one. The selections are poor with no production quality.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous live (unplugged) performances from the best artists.......2002-10-14

This album (the second in the "Sounds Eclectic" series) compiles some of the best works from one of the most eclectic radio shows there is: Morning Becomes Eclectic, which airs from Santa Monica's station KCRW (also catch the streamed version of their programs at KCRW.org). It's hard to pick one of the tracks above others: all in all, the album provides an excellent sample of some of today's best acts. However, I do have some personal favorites:
-The version of "Yellow" performed on piano, by Coldplay's Chris Martin;
-REM's beautiful rendition of their hit from their latest album, "I've Been High;"
-A plunge into the work of one of Mexico's (and Latin America's) best rock acts, Julieta Venegas, performing "Casa Abandonada;"
-"Fever," a track that brings to mind Stillwater's "Fever Dog," an awesome road track;
-"Jesus on a Greyhound," one of my favorite discoveries from this album, performed by Shelby Lynne; and
-Norah Jones' "Feeling the Same Way," wrapping up the selection made by the show's DJ, Nic Harcourt.

Get a copy of this album and you will be able to sample the best of today's musical works.

5 out of 5 stars Hydrosphere.......2006-11-23

I prefer to review ambient music so let me briefly comment on the first three "Calypso" tracks: FF> FF> FF>. Upon hearing track #4 "En Attendant Cousteau" I felt I was wading in shallow Jarre waters. But halfway through the third playing I realized I was swimming in deep ambient seas. A surreal depth of layered oceanic music. Light euphotic sparkling sounds filter down into aphotic middle pseudo-organic tones. With increasing depth finally abyssopelagic tides rise and counterpart up to balance this hydrospheric masterpiece. Here Jarre has proven he has an ambient soul.

5 out of 5 stars One of his best.......2006-11-10

especially the log melody "En attendant Cousteau" will provide you with endless hours of relaxation and posibly meditation too.

5 out of 5 stars cool Jarre.......2006-11-07

For those "fans" that didn't get it, Jarre didn't leave the sequencers and computers running while he went to lunch. The 46 minute piece is the soundtrack to a documentary on Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the famed French marine-biologist. That's why it's ambient and mellow. Make sense now? As for the Calypso parts, they are named after the Cousteau Society's three exploration boats: Calypso, calypso II, and calypso III. That's it. Nonetheless, Jarre's trademark sound is on board with lush pads.

5 out of 5 stars Was I in heaven?.......2005-10-17

I wasn't expecting track 4 at all. It just surrounded me from out of nowhere. And all the bad things in my soul vanished. Was I still on Earth, or rather a perfect copy of it where there is only good things. I never wanted it to end. I haven't tried listening to track 4 yet while driving. Not sure what it would do to me. But I'm sure something life-changingly good could only come from doing so.

4 out of 5 stars Now if only he'd followed this path a little further..........2005-05-18

The first three tracks are old Jarre--very pleasing. The last track is new Jarre... except he never really did this again after this album. How very disappointing. I mean who knew that Jarre could do good modern ambient!?

That last track, if you listen to it VERY CLOSELY, MANY, MANY TIMES, will grow on you until you are aching to hear it again. It's as good as any Brian Eno--and if THAT'S not a compliment I don't know what is!

Ahhh, the power of good ambient music; like a comfy chair.

3 out of 5 stars bowie, anyone?.......2005-07-19

Is it just me, or do I hear shades of Bowie's Aladin Sane-era crooning? I'm much reminded of that title song and 'Lady Grinning Soul' from same album.

5 out of 5 stars Fine stuff.......2002-09-16

Just about everything on this album is worth a listen. This is a refined effort, for sure, which suggests these guys have been working together for a while. As some of the other reviewers say, the album has a jazzy, bluesy, smoke-filled room quality. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth, sexy, bluesy, loungey..........2002-09-05

I bought this CD 2 months ago, and it has spent very little time outside my CD player. It's like Burt Bacharach, Barry White and Chris Isaak got together and jammed. It's bluesy, jazzy, dark and sweet with a glorious lounge-singer, lava-lamp, velvet-and-dark-chocolate feel with brilliant, romantic and sometimes sarcastic lyrics. It's like nothing else out there right now. Everyone can relate to the sentiments expressed; they're universal and yet original (take "Wish You Were Her," for instance). The music is superb, the lyrics are sheer genius, and yes, my God, that voice...

5 out of 5 stars Welcome Cousteau.......2002-06-23

How refreshing to hear melody that you really want to listen to over and over and lyrics that have their own special meaning, a life of their own even without the music. Bundle this with sensitive arrangements and a wonderfull baritone who sings as if he really feels it. This is truly modern day musical expression. Congratulations to all involved -to Davey Ray Moor whose wonderful creative genius gave birth to it all, to Liam who makes you want to listen ever so closely and to the band for creating the great wholesome sound that will span the changing tastes of many generations of music lovers.

Sirena, the second album from Cousteau, further demonstrates this group's debt to Scott Walker, the Tindersticks, and, indeed, any young man who has ever put on a suit, turned the lights down low, and crooned sadly, sonorously, and edgily. Buoyed by dramatic pianos, subtle strings, and even the odd keening steel guitar, these anthems of bruised machismo frame singer Liam's rich and relaxed slides between warm baritone and caressing falsetto. If there's a drawback, it lies in the rhythmic and textural sameness of much of the material. But, at its best--"Nothing So Bad," "Heavy Weather," "Talking to Myself," and the deliciously sensual "Salome"--Sirena is an album of bittersweet bliss and old-fashioned swoon-pop values. --Garry Mulholland

Album Description

Cousteau describe their album as 'Sleazy Listening'. While building up a loyal fan base that stretches from the States to France to Australia and to Italy (where their debut achieved Gold status). Flying in the face of all that's formulaic and shallow Cousteau return with 'Sirena' - real songs, real emotional power, real musicians. Palm Pictures 2002 release.

Excellent: "Talking to Myself"
Good: "Please Don't Cry", "After the Fall", "She Bruise Easy"
So-So: "Nothing So Bad", "Have You Seen Her"
Bad: everything else

I loved their first album, but this one is a real crapshoot. The standout tracks ARE wonderful (especially "Talking to Myself"--that song owns!), but the horrible half is rather a pain to hear. It's still worth checking out for the good stuff--you might just hear something amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Cousteau Sirena.......2005-04-28

I first heard Cousteau on an L.A. radio station with a track song, 'Blue Melody: A Tribute to Tim Buckly', I was hooked.
I have since bought both the first named album and Sirena.
The first three tracks on Sirena are solid great songs, this is definitly an album you wont just listen to once and then put back on the shelf.
Liam Mckahey is just a great vocalist, I wish this band good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Sirena envelopes like warm, plush velvet.......2004-01-31

Confident, pliable vocals supported by a deceptively simple musical cast of characters hang behind the meter of a song to extend phrases in captivating ways. Lyrically and musically Cousteau/Moreau exude an intelligence and musicianship sorely lacking in today's music scene. Sirena envelopes my soul, heart and imagination like warm plush velvet. I am enchanted.

4 out of 5 stars Good Listen.......2003-03-31

Can't believe that there's only 10 reviews for cousteau. I stumbled upon Cousteau with their first album and like their songs alot. Their music is very loungey, smokey, and should be listened to with a good drink in your hand. This new album picks off where they left off on their first album and after repeated listens, will have you singing along. There are definite highlights in this album which would be late september rain, nothing so bad, damn these hungry times, heavy weather, and she bruise easy. My favorites however, come from their first album with how will I know, and she dont hear your prayer.

5 out of 5 stars Doing Bacharach Proud.......2002-12-27

Imagine a man that looks surprisingly like Mike Ness of Social Distortion, dresses like a GQ suit model and has the voice of Scott Walker crossed with Johnny Hartman, and you have a pretty clear picture of Liam McKahey, the lead vocalist of Cousteau. Add in that his amazing voice is the vehicle that brings to life beautifully crafted and orchestrated songs that sound like lost Burt Bacharach standards, and you have an understanding of Davey Ray Moore, the mastermind behind the material. Put these elements together and you have an understanding of Cousteau. Their second album, Sirena continues in the same vein as their first and shows a band that is more accomplished and better than most any band getting airplay today. The first track off the album, "Nothing So Bad" sounds like something written for Dusty Springfield during the Dusty In Memphis sessions - think "Just A Little Lovin'" with a silky baritone.

A mix-and-match compilation project packaged as a tribute to the memory of Jacques Cousteau, the famed ocean explorer and environmental crusader, Cousteau's Dream is a low-key, high-minded collection of soft instrumental works compatible with an ocean's most serene state. Few of the mostly keyboard-generated compositions on this disc stir waves, making it an appropriate choice for laid-back listeners who favor the idea of tranquil ocean-gazing on a becalmed afternoon. The assembled tracks, from Vangelis, Aria, Kitaro, and others, along with two original pieces (including "Sun's Comin' Out," a semireverential work for trumpet and keyboards from Richard Burmer), exude a more earnest New Age inclination. Subtle grooves appear during Kamal's twinkling "Shakuhaji Tales" and periodically in Aria's "Un Bel Di," but the overall tone of the disc is better reflected by a worshipful, requiem-like selection such as Michael Hoppe's "Lachrymosa" or the brief, solemn beauty of Vangelis's "Eternity." The Kenny G tune, "Theme from Dying Young" seems a little out of place here, though 2002's Enya-like "Stella Maris" is a treat. The label, Real Music, says its EarthSea Institute will donate more than two dollars from each disc's sale to environmental groups. --Terry Wood

Album Description

Oceans of beauty caress the senses in this emotionally evocative tribute to Capt. Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Ranging from tribal to operatic, poignant to passionate, "Cousteau's Dream" is a musical voyage of hope and inspiration for what one person can do to change the world.

From each purchase of a CD, approximately $2.50 will be donated by Real Music's non-profit EarthSea Institute to The Cousteau Society and organizations with similar goals of protecting and preserving the earth and its inhabitants.

3 out of 5 stars Uneven collection makes this noble concept sink.......2002-11-03

A tribute CD to Costeau with watery graphics on the inserts. So why not at least titles with water themes? Despite great tracks from Vangelis (two selections - is that why his name is assigned as artist on this page?), Kitaro and 2002, most of the remaining tracks are unmemorable.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully relaxing.......2001-04-18

This is a terrific blend of relaxing music. The pieces played give a definite feel of peace and water. This is one of my best choices I've purchased and play daily while reading cleaning or just relaxing with my feet up. And such a great cause. :-}

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2000-10-04

The folks at Real Music seem to have a real knack for putting together exceptionally good compilations. "Cousteau's Dream" contains work from recent releases as well as some early ones (1987 Yanni, 1990 Kitaro), and there is a very international flavor to the album as a whole. A generous portion from the sale of each CD will be donated by Real Music's non-profit EarthSea Institute to The Cousteau Society and organizations with similar goals of protecting and preserving the earth and its inhabitants. A noble cause, and a great album to help promote it! Several of the contributions are from Real Music artists (Kevin Kern, Tim Wheater, 2002), but most come from other sources such as Vangelis, Yanni, Kitaro, Kenny G, Richard Burmer, Michael Hoppe, Aria, Kamal, and Frederic Delarue. With such a variety of artistic styles, it is amazing that this album is so seamless. Smooth enough to use as a backdrop, but still interesting enough to listen to actively. Highly recommended!

2 out of 5 stars Less than the Best.......2000-09-27

A less than stellar collection of tracks... very much lacking cohesion and continuity. I couldn't wait to take it out of my CD player. It is an unfortunate choice of music for such a noteworthy endeavor.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible musicians and a noble cause.......2000-09-14

This album is an incredible collection of some of the best artists in New Age. It doesn't necessarily flow from track to track as smoothly as some of Real Music's other compilations, but the tracks on Cousteau's Dream are some of the best by each of the contributing artists. This is an album where the tracks are to be enjoyed on an individual basis, not necessarily one in which you drift off and not notice what it is you're listening to.

There certainly is, however, an overall effect created by this album that I think very accurately captures the mood that was intended. The inclusion of waves gently caressing the shore and the magnificent vocal exchange of the whales conveys the message and feeling that Jacques Cousteau always tried to capture with his films. "Cousteau's Dream" creates a sense of the tranquility that exists beneath the waves of the ocean with the tracks by Vangelis, Yanni, Kamal and Frederic Delarue. But the life and magnificence of all the ocean creatures can be felt through operatic vocals featured on "Un Bel Di" and "Lachrymosa."

If you're buying an album to have strictly as background music that you really don't want to listen to and only sort of want to hear, you may not want this one. But if you want an album that features some of the strongest tracks by some of New Age music's greatest artists, this is the one for you. And with $2.50 from the sale of each album going to The Cousteau Society, you can feel entirely guilt-free for investing in this treasure.

Album Description

Cousteau have had to overcome inherent difficulties since the release of two glorious, critically acclaimed albums ('Cousteau' in 2000 and 'Sirena' in 2002). Towards the end of an American tour, the band found out that their songwriter and creative lynchpin Davey Ray Moore was leaving to do his own thing. Vocalist Liam McKahey recalls a gloomy gathering with guitarist Robin Brown, drummer Craig Vear and bassist Joe Peet in a Boston airport bar, 'We thought it was the end and we were all feeling really emotional. But after a few pints, we'd decided to carry on and do the song writing ourselves. It was sink or swim, and we decided to swim.' While 'Nova Scotia' is undoubtedly a Cousteau record, possessing McKahey's trademark Scott Walker-esque baritone and Robin Brown's distinctive atmospheric lines, it does perhaps signal a subtle shift away from a Bacharach-ian pop sensibility to a rawer, more rock-borne sound. Universal. 2005.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A New Path for Cousteau.......2005-09-01

The first time I listened to "Nova Scotia," I was initially a little let down in that I had waited three years to hear again from Cousteau and was expecting that usual Cousteau sound. I went into listening to it with the expectation that it couldn't be good without the contributions of Davy Ray Moor. But I have listened to it many times since then, and the one point I missed in the beginning is that this is actually a sign of evolution for them, they have lost their founder and key song writer and still managed to perservere with their own distinctive new take on the original sound. They had struggled for years to get this album signed and realeased, for a while even changed the band name to Moreau. I think it was a great move for them to keep the name Cousteau, just because they lost one of their most important members doesn't mean the band is lost, the show must go on. And it has, much better than you could have imagined. Liam still sounds great and is so distinctive and immediately recognizable vocally, and you can hear echos of that moody sound so attributed to Cousteau in the brilliant musical work of Robin Brown and Joe Peet. Yet this album is so much more young and edgy than the original sound of Cousteau, much more modern with rock and roll undertones. The tracks are all good, though it was tough for me to tell that at first because I immediately was just comparing and contrasting the songs to their earlier two albums. The main thing is you can't compare it to Cousteau's earlier albums, which reflected the work of a songwriter who is completely not involved in this latest album. The sound is totally different, the songs are composed by different songwriters, so it has to be evaluated at face value, not compared to someone else's work. It also forces you to recognize and value the great versitility and talent of the three key members, Liam, Joe and Robin, which wasn't as immediately apparent before. And once you can see it for what it is you can truly appreciate it. This is a very fine album, a joy to listen to over and over again. Great respect for Cousteau for not throwing in the towel.

4 out of 5 stars A really great 3rd album.......2005-08-31

The band slog on without ravey Davey Moore and what a slog it isn't. This is a really superior album with not a single dud track. A much more cohesive album than Sirena and as good if not, in some ways, better than the first.
It's interesting to compare this album with Davey Moore's solo album given that Moore wrote all of Cousteau's previous material. I have both albums and this one is streets ahead of Mr Moore's effort.
Well done Cousteau!
