Though the lightning crackling across the CD cover suggests a heavy-metal band (or perhaps a cross between the Addams Family and a Black Oak Arkansas reunion), the second release by Cherryholmes on Ricky Skaggs's label establishes the family band as one of the most promising acts in contemporary bluegrass. The star here is Cia Cherryholmes, the banjo-playing daughter who composes most of the album's original material and ranks with Alison Krauss as a vocalist on highlights such as the opening "You Don't Know What Love Is" and the prison-ballad title track. Yet the instrumental interplay and harmonies reflect the sextet's blood ties, while the range of material bridges the traditional and progressive (it's hard to hear Cia's "Don't Give Your Heart to a Knoxville Girl," sung by brother B.J., without thinking of the Louvin Brothers' classic "Knoxville Girl"). --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Wow...what could I say that hasn't been said?.......2007-03-14
GET THE HELL AWAY FROM MY WINDOW WITH YOUR RADIO!
Thats some scary stuff. I really hate this music. Almost as much as top 40 pop and rap, and I pity people who like any of that stuff. For a more detailed review on music today please visit my 1 star review for that new Fergie cd (the explicit lyrics one). You will most likely be pleased. Also, I can't stand those "emo" kids. Ok, for those of you who are listeing, you have nothing to be depressed about. The average "emo" kid is an upper middle class kid with everything going for him/her who wants to "stand out" from the crowd and look like a complete fag in some girl pants. Grow up.
Sincerely,
Jake
Okay music, horrible unoriginal lyrics.......2007-01-26
Sure, their music can evoke the sad, melancholy feeling that they are aiming for, but I feel that they can be more creative with their lyrics. I mean, the chorus of their best known song in this album, Ohio is for lovers, has the most unoriginal lyrics. "Because you kill me.
You know you do, you kill me well."
I would say that overall, this is a good album, and they can execute music/melody/rhythm well, but if you're looking for depth in any of their songs, you're looking in the wrong place.
Please.......2006-09-18
before you go off on a tear on how much this band sucks and start saying that all fans who listen to them are "emo" stop and think boy i sound a little hypocritical that's like me saying everyone who listens to classic rock smokes pot.
anyway i like this band my fav songs on the cd are life on standby, niki FM, And ohio is for lovers.
Haha!! Set Abominae is spot on 100%!!.......2006-09-05
Hawthorne Heights is no different from the rest of the emo crowd (they all suck), don't waste your time with this s*** and go for quality bands like Dream Theater, Opeth, Arch Enemy, Iced Earth, Nevermore, and Symphony X.
Once you free yourself from emo, you'll thank me for recommending greater bands.

excellent new orleans band..........2001-04-17
ALL OF THIS FROM A 3-MAN BAND?.......2000-06-22
This group reminds me of Rush in many ways: A three-man band with a distinctive sound, songs with excellent lyrics, and musicians who are very talented. In listening to this CD, it still amazes me that this band is a trio. Equally amazing is their ability to produce the goods on stage as well, as I have seen them live many times.
Go ahead and add to your cart one of the most overlooked bands of its era.
THE BEST BAND NEVER TO MAKE THE BIGS.......2000-06-17
If you are looking to hear some phenomenal music from that era and don't have Zebra in your collection, put it in your cart now. This band rocks and you will not be dissapointed. I rank them up there with my favorite band of all time, Van Halen. Yes, they're that good. One of the best bands of their era not to hit the big time. And yes, I will be going to their next local concert.
What's Black & White and Rock'n'Roll All Over?.......2000-06-03
The songs Tell Me What You Want, Hard Livin' Without You and Wait Until the Summer's Gone really rock. There's also some more good, melodic tunes in Bears, Lullaby and Who's Behind the Door. Also fun is Riverside and Better Not Call. The other tracks are fair.
Zebra is really one of the great, but relatively "unknown" bands of the 80's and 90's. They're right up there with Steelheart, Thunder, XYZ and Shooting Star. Give them a try, there's some good stuff in this release.

Not My Favorite!.......2001-12-06
Inconsistent, but still great.......2000-05-02
Two other minor points: It's kind of silly to have The Wonderful World of Color on an album called Black and White Classics. Also, I was extremely disappointed in the Fugitive cut without the voiceover. Come on -- is your most vivid memory the music, or William Conrad's voice, " Dr. Richard Kimble, an innocent victim of blind justice..."?
Still, I'm glad I have it. Where else are you going to find Beany & Cecil, Captain Midnight, Soupy Sales, etc. A lot of old friends are here.
The words of Bob Hope's theme song say it best -- "Thanks for the memories."

Infectious American Rock.......2001-12-06
Of the 12 songs, 7 are incredibly good and make the CD worth purchasing. For good or ill, the hands-down best song on the CD is the first track, "Good Things." If you are not tapping your toes and struggling to sing along with the chorus, check your wrist for a pulse or your toe for a morgue tag. Simply great pop-rock with a bittersweet edge. The BoDeans have written the quintessential unrequited pop love song.
However, even though the album reaches its zenith right out of the gate, there are still a good number of gems waiting for the listener. "Any Given Day," the fifth track, features a chorus riff and lyric that you will be singing for days after. I'm not sure if these guys missed their true calling in writing jingles for commercials, but I am glad they've done something with their gift. "For one dollar you can see angels call/For two dollar you can see your enemies fall/For three dollar, you can be king for a day." Trust me. You WILL be singing this!
"Do I Do" and "Bad for You" are more hand-clapping, car-dancing inspiring pieces. Both love songs, the first manages to be both bittersweet and sensually groovy. The second, "Bad for You," is a romp of a song, featuring simple (though not simplistic) lyrics and a (here's that word again) fabulously infectious rhythm.
Additionally, "True Devotion," "Paradise," and "Long Hard Day" all match up to the BoDeans at their best. Spanning from sad lament to rocking anthem, they draw you in and have you searching the CD booklet to ensure you can sing along next time.
While I state that 7 songs are stand outs, only 2 of the tracks are what I consider unredeemable failures: "Black, White and Blood Red" and "Going Home." It's not the music that fails here; it's the ear-bloodying vocals of the #2 singer of the group. Sounding as if he swallowed a mouthful of broken glass, his raspy singing voice really grates on these tracks. For the other 10 songs, the other singer does the vocals, and his style and voice are simply great. On "True Devotion," the two share singing responsibilities, but it works on that track.
"Forever on My Mind," "Naked" and "Hell of a Chance" simply don't register with me. They're not bad or good -- a bit bland and unremarkable. If the CD is playing out of reach, I let the tracks play. If it's playing on my PC or close by, I will skip them.
If you only know the BoDeans through "Closer to Free," you'll really dig this collection. If you're looking for great listener-friendly rock to clean the house, wash the car, or get ready to go out on a Saturday night, search no longer.
Wholehearted release.......2001-07-09
The other main strengths evident here are their songwriting and their two vocalists. Singers Sam Llanas and Kurt Neumann have pleasing and distinctive voices.
Three of the more intense songs, "Long Hard Day", "Naked" and the single "Black, White and Blood Red" are certainly highlights.
Black and White is immediately accessible and does not seem to have a weak spot.

If you haven't listened to Scritti Politti's Cupid & Psyche '85 lately, you may be shocked at how well it holds up. With the hyper-literate songwriting chops of XTC and a fluffy electronic sheen that remains highly influential, the damn thing is better than it ever was, filled with impossible sweetness and glistening pop songs that were--despite the helium lightness of Green Gartside's voice--deceptively ballsy. 20 years later, White Bread Black Beer flaunts many of the same qualities. Gartside may be in his 50s, but he's still pure High Fructose with his candy-colored saccharine tones, linguistic non-sequiturs (see "The Boom Boom Bap") and sweet--but blunt--atheism ("After Six"). Beer completely ditches the strong hip-hop influence of SP's last "comeback" album, 1999's Anomie & Bonhomie and replaces it with quieter, softer textures and ballads. Then again, the whole thing was recorded in the back room of Gartside's Hackney apartment so maybe he just lacked the production oomph to jazz it up properly. Not that it matters; Beer might be a relatively hushed and less exuberant record, but it's unmistakably Scritti Politti, bursting with a twinkling, bright likeability that makes us grateful for anything Gartside manages to release. --Matthew CookeAlbum Description
With the release of White Bread Black Beer, the first Scritti Politti offering in seven years, Green Gartside experiments with lush Beach Boys-style harmonies and Beatles-esque melodies, subtly subverting them with touches of hip hop and reggae. Gartside once again offers instantly embraceable, pure-pop pleasure. If you plunge beneath these shimmering surfaces, however, you'll discover greater challenges and richer rewards--reservoirs of feeling and layers of meaning residing within Gartside's carefully arranged lyrics.Customer Reviews:
The gems make it worth it.......2007-02-18
Keep in mind that I am rating this album 4 stars just for those songs. No matter who you are, or where you play them, they'll get a terrific response. Scritti fans, like my sister, will probably enjoy the rest of the CD a lot more than I did.
After all these years Green has done it AGAIN !!!!.......2007-01-26
I'm so glad that Scritti Politti (Green Gartside)is back and BETTER than ever.I LOVE the old stuff(boy do I),but his new work was well worth the wait.
the Best Pop Album of 2006.......2007-01-09
If Hooks Could Kill..........2006-12-13
The instruments and *that* voice sound gorgeous and Green Gartside has not lost his instinct for hitting the right notes and the pressing the right keys and wrap it up with impeccable production. Almost every song gives a rush of pleasure like biting into a piece of Belgian chocolate - and just as sweet. Or for those who adore Renoir's paintings, this may be the aural equivalent - it's lush, relaxed, warm, dreamy, romantic, gorgeous.
To say that some songs of this album - say Locked, Petrococadollar and Snow In Sun - are worth the price of the album would be a trite understatement. These are gems with the magic Scritti Politti touch that one would scour record shops around the country for. A soundscape with nice melodies and harmonies embellished by clever hooks, tempo changes, word plays and intonations is presented. Let us hope Green produces more of this type of music, which brings out his talent to full effect, instead of hip hop which hopefully remains an 'Anomalie'.
The album is laid back yet some songs swing with an infectious rhythm, example "Cooking" and "Robin Hood", and with the latter the album ends on a high - it fits perfectly as an ending track. Perhaps the piece de resistance is in the middle - Petrococadollar which is slow, atmospheric and totally mesmering. How do you follow up a showstopper like that? Answer: with the uptempo "E Eleventh Nuts" which gives instant satisfaction and we move on. The album's flow is excellent.
"WBBB" is an inconspicuous masterpiece so if you chanced upon this review I hope WBBB will become one of your best lucky finds. Definitely give this one a chance!
Note: the Amazon UK site has many more reviews of this album.
