Bruce Hornsby smashes his well-worn, previously cemented image and sound with his eighth album, Big Swing Face. In the debris are 11 layered and daring experiments in funk, trip-hop, New Orleans jazz, pop, and rock with a capital R. His signature poignant, rolling piano has been unexpectedly swapped for fuzzed-out guitars, rhythmic loops, and surprisingly hip samples. Using these new elements results in an irreverent tone, and grants Hornsby the freedom to veer from the socially conscious, lovelorn lyrics of previous hits ("The Way It Is," "Mandolin Rain"). From a litany of insults strung together on "Sticks & Stones" to the possible mission-statement chorus of "Try Anything Once" ("What the hell / Try anything once / Gotta keep an open mind in these crazy times"), Hornsby reveals all sorts of faces we've never seen before--on him or anyone else. --Laura Etling

Album Description

Rich's second album, another live affair that swings hard from beginning to end. Newly remixed, it includes nine previously unissued tunes, doubling the amount of music. The band roars with the intensity of Rich's drums and young soloists Ernie Watts and Jay Corre.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A rich program by a rich-sounding band (not to mention a pretty good drummer)........2007-04-07

This album came out a year after I'd caught Rich with Sinatra, a period when, above all, the great drummer wasn't afraid to swing! Beginning in 1968 Rich, like so many other jazz musicians, practically became paranoid of the walking-bass 4/4 swing pattern that had served everyone from Basie to Charlie Parker to Bill Evans so well. A pulse as fundamental to life as a heart beating or a lung breathing was no longer sufficiently "emphatic" to be heard, or understood, by the '60s generation. Rich tried to "connect" with the Beatles-Stones audience by going to a quasi-rock repertory along with the addition of electric bass. Fortunately, this phase lasted for only several years, and by 1974 Rich was once again validating the swing tradition of Basie, Goodman, Dorsey and his own roots.

"Big Swing Face" captures the band at an optimal period, especially for listeners who don't require for every tune the double-eighth-note, on-the-beat, slam-bam feel of much rock-pop music. And a previous reviewer's point about Rich's later incorporation of electric bass is well taken. A recently released DVD video of the Rich band from the late '70s features an all-swing program but retains electric bass (even Dizzy Gillespie made exclusive use of the instrument for a while). The instrument, quite frankly, sounds loud but penetrating and out of balance with the rest of the band. The band may swing as much, but from a listener's perspective the sound is less buoyant, less integral with the overall sonic textures of the ensemble.

Fortunately, by the end of the '70s, the great bass debate was fait accompli: the acoustic instrument had proven its inherent worth and staying power--at least in the jazz idiom. It's refreshing, though, to hear a recording made before all the fuss interfered with simply enjoying the music. "Big Swing Face" is such a recording, boasting, moreover, a total of eighteen tunes (admittedly, a couple of them "period pieces," though Buddy's 12-year-old daughter's singing makes it easy to forgive one such instance), making it a great value and assured winner for any fan of Rich or just plain swinging, great big band jazz.

Finally, for an "on location" recording the audio is first rate--better, in fact, than many studio dates with the bonus of the electricity that only a responsive audience can bring.

5 out of 5 stars Buddy the Great.......2006-11-05

Excellent CD. If you're a BR fan then you'll love this CD.
Have fun with it.

5 out of 5 stars Great, clean sound.......2006-06-21

Some of the best big band music I've heard. The sound is clean and sharp, the improv is excellent, and (of course) the drumming is fantastic. I particularly like Norwegian Wood... listen for the trumpets at the top of the climax! Buddy Rich himself was apparently a mean old man, but his band made great music. A must have.

4 out of 5 stars Tight swinging Rich band.......2005-10-28

Big Swing Face shows the Buddy Rich band of the late 60s and it was a good one with Jay Corre, Ernie Watts, and Bobby Shew. It lacks the long Rich solos found on other albums. Bugle Call Rag features a longer solo and so does Apples but other than that it's Rich backing the band. Some songs sound dated like Wack Wack and Norwegian Wood. The Beat Goes On has Rich's daughter singing and it's not very good. Love For Sale is an oustanding piece as is Big Swing Face and Chicago. Many of the tunes were on The New One studio album of the same time which I prefer because it features more of Rich's playing. Not a bad album though at all and the band really swings.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive.......2005-01-08

You can play this album throughout several times and not remember one tune.

But what you will remember is the great sound from the band here and Buddy's banging, plus the fact it was done live which always helps.

5 out of 5 stars Different Bruce, but still great Bruce.......2007-05-19

Yes, this album does sound somewhat different from lots of Bruce's other music (the extensive use of loops and electronica), but it's still some GREAT music. Some of the grooves (Big Swing Face, Sticks and Stones, The Good Life) are among the best in his music, if not the very best.

If you're a longtime Hornsby fan, don't worry. It's good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Nice departure!.......2006-05-03

Hornsby gets funky in this highly entertaining, yet underrated affair. Reminds this listener of Harry Connick's approach on "She" and "Star Turtle" releases. Bruce stretches himself very tastefully here with good singing and energetic playing that makes one wonder how all this fun went largely unnoticed.

4 out of 5 stars Big Swing Face is great.......2006-02-08

All you losers can listen to your old Bruce Hornsby albums and keep your ears and minds shut to anything new. This CD is so unbelievably catchy. How can you not like the song, "The Chill"?
This is a great new sound for Hornsby. I hope he keeps making new and exciting music. I look forward to a lot more complaining from you "stick in the mud" fans. I think you are the same people who cursed Dylan for going electric.

3 out of 5 stars mixed.......2005-10-03

I bought this CD a few years ago, it barely made it home. I was talking with a friend last night about it and decided to send her some samples of it. While a few of the songs are ok, none of them stand out unless you just didnt like his original work or are an oddball. In his earlier work the songs ran together well with the instruments. In my own honest opinion, if Bruce can make these songs better with time, then he should and make them availble online for those of us that purchased the CD. I felt alot like one of the other people who reviewed it here, this should be in the R and B section. Then I would not have spent my money on it. (despite a few decent songs, none come close to his "worste" songs on his previous releases.)

If you listen to his earlier work, he included lots of things other than pianos, he could have not included it here and still have made a good cd.

I simply would not purchase another BH cd for fear that it would be like this one until he made this purchase right for those of us that blindly supported his.. expierement..

4 out of 5 stars Quirky, cool, and fun.......2005-08-13

I can't exactly say I'm a big fan of Bruce Hornsby's. But I bought his Noisemakers CD on ebay because I knew there was some great piano work on it and I like that sort of stuff. The seller offered this CD as an add on.

I think it's fun! Everyone here is so darn serious about how it isn't the "real" Bruce Hornsby, but I went into it with an open mind. And I liked it! Why does everything of his have to sound the same, anyhow?

Be careful, though - Cartoons and Candy, just like the items mentioned in its title - is addictive!

4 out of 5 stars A Spike Jones chronology of his earliest records.......1999-01-19

This British import is actually a chronology of Spike's earliest 78s for Bluebird / RCA, from his first recording session in 1941 ("Red Wing") through 1945. Included are his hits ("Cocktails for Two," "Der Fuehrer's Face") and obscure B-sides ("The Covered Wagon Rolled Right Along," "Leave the Dishes In the Sink"). Spike's band was in its prime during this time, making for a good collection. Editing is good, especially joining the six parts of "The Nutcracker Suite." But note that the source material is scratchy 78s!

5 out of 5 stars Mixing the Old With the New.......2002-07-23

What can you expect from a CD named Mutant Mosquitoes from New Jersey by a band sharing a name with one of the hardest swingin' albums ever recorded? I'll tell you: Music that is representative of the title. A great playing band that swings hard playing great tunes standard and original. Listening to their music you'd think you were listening to professionals who've been in the business for years, but upon further investigation you will find the average age to be somewhere in the early to mid twenties! The energy is amazing. The opener which is the title track by Trumpeter Nick Corvino is a throw-back to Sing Sing Sing with a modern sound and feel. The solos are melodic and the arrangement fresh. We hear a lot from a young female vocalist named Meg Clifton whose voice is amazing. Her singing is reminiscent of Ella and Diane Reeves, but with a style all her own. I really enjoy the eclectic mix of tunes on this CD. There's everything from "All the Way" made famous by Sinatra and played beautifully here by Ben Vinci, sax player and Leader/Arranger to a modern jazz original "Sam Meets James" dedicated to the birth of bassist Bob Colligan's newborn son. "Solar Eclipse" has a real west coast feel and is written by the group's amazing pianist Judy Glover. That's only a few of the tunes on the CD, buy it yourself and check out the rest, I promise you won't be disapointed. And if you are in Philly anytime soon you will want to check and see if you can catch them live!
