Vincent Gallo is known more for his ego than for his artistic skills. He's the model-actor who wrote, produced, and starred in the pretentious indie flick Buffalo 66 and refused to do any interviews unless he was guaranteed to get on the cover of the publication. While it seems there's nothing modest about Gallo, his musical skills do deserve whatever attention his name may bring them. He has been making music since the mid-'70s and played in a band (Gray) with artist Jean-Michel Basquiat in the '80s, and his debut record is cut from a very different cloth than most other indie offerings out there. For those who have heard the Buffalo 66 soundtrack, When takes a very similar, delicate dream-state approach to lounge and jazz. The CD fades in and out of chopped-up beats, thick strings, sedated guitar strummings, and Gallo's very feminine tenor. Wisps of vintage keyboards and breezy late-night jazz hang like cigarette smoke above this sultry, after-midnight collection. Although some of the song titles are a little much ("I Wrote This Song for the Girl Paris Hilton"), the music is much more subtle and surprisingly beautifully crafted than one would expect from someone as outspoken as Gallo. --Jennifer Maerz

Thanks to a fortuitous intersection of talent and fate, 22-year-old Josh Groban hasn't finished his senior year in performing arts school but has already released his sophomore effort on a major major label. Fans of the young vocal phenom's debut will find much to enthrall them here, even if it nudges the singer closer to the center of producer/mentor David Foster's MOR pop sensibilities. Eschewing much of its predecessor's more overt classic-lite pretensions and pop-rock covers for a slate of dramatic, Eurocentric ballads that serve as a showcase for the singer's inviting baritone, Groban shrewdly positions himself as the American alternative to the Bocelli-Watson crossover axis. "Caruso" may find the singer falling short of its operatic inspiration, but "Oceano" and "My Confession" quickly showcase his true dramatic range (which seems to all but yearn for a bona fide Broadway musical challenge), while a vocal take of Bacalov's graceful "Il Postino" theme uses classical virtuoso Joshua Bell's violin flourishes to good effect. To his credit, Groban displays some promising efforts at songwriting collaboration on the bittersweet "Per Te" and "Remember When It Rains," while the ambient/ethnic soundscape of Deep Forest's "Never Let Go" offers a teasing alternative to the record's otherwise melodramatic production formula. Groban has found commercial triumph via Foster's mentoring, but there remains a nagging sense here that he hasn't truly pushed himself as an artist--yet. --Jerry McCulley

Slippery When Wet transformed Bon Jovi from minor-league poodle rockers to global superstars on the back of hit singles "You Give Love a Bad Name," "Never Say Goodbye," and, of course, "Living on a Prayer." From the scantily clad car-wash girls on the inner sleeve to the "You lost more than that in my back seat / Yeah!" lyrics, the album is blissfully untouched by irony and subtlety, which actually adds to its charm. With guitarist Richie Sambora and songwriter Desmond Child, Jon Bon Jovi has produced a slew of consistently memorable tunes, and this album contains its fair share of them. Slippery When Wet won't change your world, but it will, undoubtedly, rock it. --Ronita Dutta

5 out of 5 stars Changed my life...seriously.......2007-05-10

Everyone has that one album that they can credit with changing the way they listened to music. Some are fortunate enough to have experienced this great awakening to Are You Experienced or The Doors. For others it was London Calling, Ramones, or even Black Sabbath. For me it was Slippery When Wet. That's right, Bon Jovi changed my life. I realize on some level that I should probably be embarrassed about that little fact, but the truth is I love this album every bit as much now as I did two decades ago.

I still remember like it was yesterday. I was 11 at the time, and didn't really care about music one way or another. I did however think that Transformers were quite awesome, but I digress. I was flipping channels and came across the video for Livin' on a Prayer. I wish I could accurately describe the impact that silly, you and me against the world love song had on me. It was like all of the tumblers of a combination lock sliding into place inside my head. I knew I had to hear more, but that wasn't going to be easy. My mama didn't dance and my daddy didn't rock & roll, so to speak, so I had to track down the cassette through a friend. If Livin' on a Prayer grabbed my interest, You Give Love a Bad Name and Wanted Dead or Alive sealed the deal. After that I moved on to Poison, Europe, Stryper, and dozens of other hairspray laden bands that I naively thought of as "metal", but Bon Jovi was the first.

I sometimes wonder if I would have reacted the same way to any other album. Somehow I doubt it. Bon Jovi was at the top of their game with this album. You could argue that their follow-up album New Jersey is the band's best, but I'll put the songs on Slippery When Wet up against that Bad Medicine stuff any day! With Slippery When Wet, Bon Jovi built on the sound they developed with their two previous efforts and added hitmakers like Desmond Child to take the songwriting to a whole new level. I can hear you snickering at the thought of You Give Love a Bad Name and Never Say Goodbye as examples of quality songwriting, but it's hard to argue with the results. I believe that the lessons Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora learned while recording this album are a big reason why they are still big stars to this day, when so many of their peers have been relegated to the bar & grill circuit.

Slippery When Wet was the perfect fusion of Bruce Springsteen's American rock & roll, Van Halen's party rock image, and an impeccable pop sensibility. It didn't hurt that Jon and the boys were easy on the eyes and could represent the new face of "metal" in a totally unthreatening way. I can't help but wonder how many other kids made their way to Iron Maiden and Metallica by first discovering a band like Bon Jovi.

Say what you will about this era or this style of music. I firmly believe that Slippery When Wet is a great example of rock & roll in the 80's, and it will always have a special place in my heart.

NOTE: Slippery When Wet was reissued in 1998 with digitally remastered sound. Serious collectors may also want to check out the import version with the original cover art that the band nixed, not because of the racy image, but because of the pink border. Go figure.

5 out of 5 stars Bon Jovi Album- Slippery When Wet.......2007-05-09

I grew up in the 80's and this was one of my favorite bands. I recently purchased the remastered CD from Amazon. The CD arrived quickly and in good shape. I was very pleased with the service and the prompt delivery. The album is every bit as good as I remember from my youth. Now my son is hooked on Bon Jovi as well!

5 out of 5 stars Bring back the high school memories.......2007-03-30

I had this on tape when it came out in the 80's and have been meaning to purchase it on CD for quite some time. This CD brings back so many high school memories.

4 out of 5 stars cheesy hair music at its cheesiest.......2007-02-19

I loved this album. It came out when I was about 12. I guess that's the only time I could enjoy the album.
Bon Jovi seems incapable of writing lyrics that amount to anything other than a string of cliches.
This album can really only be appreciated by those of us who were young when it was popular.

This is not the typical example of an artist from another genre jumping on the crowded standards-and-ballads bandwagon. When I Fall in Love instead represents an instrumental stylist busting out of a box to find a much more suitable platform for his craft. These tracks are the fruits of an obvious labor of love for everyone from the featured musicians to the arrangers to the engineers. The arrangers, particularly Billy Childs and Gil Goldstein, give Botti's trumpet a broad-brushed orchestral backdrop that allows him to emerge from the swirling strings and bouncy horns with bold strokes of creative improvising. Some tracks are obvious nods to Gil Evans and the lush arrangements of 1970s CTI recordings. Even the guest vocalists, Sting and Paula Cole, let his trumpet sing first before their respective cues on "La Belle Dame Sans Regrets" and "What'll I Do." The only blemish here is the obvious attempt at smooth jazz airplay with Sade's "No Ordinary Love." --Mark Ruffin

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly An Excellent Follow Up Album.......2007-07-26

Evans Blue has released their second album in a rather short amount of time from the release of their previous album, however thankfully the music did not suffer at all. In fact I find this album to be slightly superior to their debut. I still think that "Eclipsed" is my top favorite song from their debut, but this album has a far more amount of songs that I enjoy. Among my top favorites are "Q (The Best One Of Our Lives)," "My Damsel: A Confession To An Adversary," "Pin-Up," "Shine Your Cadillac" and "Painted." My only complaint is with "Painted" unfortunately. The song itself is great and one of my favorites, but it goes on for far too long. I enjoy the extended outro up until the shockingly good guitar solo ends at about the 7:30 mark. After that the song takes a horrible downward turn into a bunch of background noise, guitar feedback, chanting and yelling. I could have done without all of that. But otherwise this album is just as good, if not better than their debut and I would strongly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of modern melodic rock music.

3 out of 5 stars Too Little Too Soon........2007-07-25

It wasn't much more than a year ago that Evans Blue came onto the scene and injected some much needed freshness into the modern rock scene. With their debut, The Melody And The Energetic Nature of Volume, each song was catchy enough to be a single, yet weird enough to ensure staying power, and with enough substance to attract even the most fickle of rock fans. Although the album didn't quite reach the same level commercially, as some would have predicted, it still set the band up with a solid fanbase and quite a bit of anticipation for their next album. All the better then, that after a year and a handful of months, they are back with a brand new album, right? Well...

It's not that "The Pursuit Begins When This Portrayal Of Life Ends" (Holy long album titles, Batman) is a bad piece of work. In fact, when listened to immediately after the first album, it holds up rather well. However, what always happens with rush-jobs such as this, and all the more unfortunate for a new band, is that they were not allowed time to grow and to create something new. Basically, "The Pursuit..." sounds like it could have been the second disc to a double album of the debut. There really hasn't been much change to the Evans Blue formula -- not that it needs change -- so if you have spent the last year digging the first album, it's going to be rather difficult to appreciate this one, as it sounds virtually indentical. Heck, they even covered another solo female pop-artist. This time around, it's Tori Amos on "Caught A Lite Sneeze." Deja vu, anyone?

The blunt truth is that had Evans Blue waited another year, experimented and grown a bit more, they would more than likely have a stunning second album in 2008 to crush the competition with. But as it is, "The Pursuit Begins When This Portrayal Of Life Ends" is too little too soon.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best New Bands.......2007-07-25

Evans Blue's first CD played for almost an entire year in every playlist that I listened to. This new CD is going to have the same longevity. I love this bands sound. It's more mature, tighter (new drummer), and just as emotional and well written as the first CD.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Sophmore Releases in rock.......2007-07-24

So i figured id wait until i actually picked up the album to write a real review, so heres my take on the new Evans Blue album, The Pursuit Begins When This Portrayal Of Life Ends.

Let me start by saying im a pretty big evans blue fan, so I cant speak entirly for people who are new to the band. ive been following them since " The Melody And The Energetic Nature of Volume " came out, and honestly, at first, i really didnt think they were that good. A friend of mine convinced me to go to a show, and thats when my opinion changed. Because of an emergency, the band was forced to play their entire set acoustically, sans drummer. I was completely blown away. The band sounded pretty good acoustically, but Kevin completely blew me away with his vocals. I had never seen such power and energy from a singer on stage before, and im not new to singers or live performances.

So as they say, the true test of a band is the live performances. After that show, Evans Blue was in every playlist i made. I loved the poetic lyrics through every song, the subtle but catchy medlodies, and how new they sounded compared to alot of other new rock. When i heard they were releasing a new album, i couldnt wait to hear it.

The new album, to me, is a good step forward. After losing a drummer, they came back with a really strong sophmore album, IMO. The album in its entirety flows very well, from beginning to end. As a musician and audiophile, i think the album was mixed better, not as muddy, and the guitars sound crisper. this could be because of new gear, im not sure. Either way, this album does sound better than the previous. The album contains many types of songs as well, from slower poetic songs to faster and more groove oriented songs as well. What a previous reviewer said about not hearing the vocals as well was likely an effort to blend some of the chorus guitar tracks into the vocals itself through post production. I think it makes the choruses have a stronger presence and are an interesting touch.

So far, My favorite songs on every Evans Blue album have not been the singles. Previously, my favorites were " Beg ", Stop and say you love me ", and " Quote ". With the current release, I would say " Pin-Up ", and " in a red dress and alone ". Everyone has their opinions i guess, and i would agree more with choosing " the pursuit " to represent the album than " cold.. but im still here " did.

So Theres my take. For fans of Evans Blue and the first release, this album wont dissapoint. For newcomers to the band, either album represents the band well. They both contain highly poetic styles with straightfoward and melodic rock tracks. A great Sophmore release from one of my favorite bands in new rock.

3 out of 5 stars Something More is Needed..........2007-07-24

This cd has all the makings of being a great one. However, I feel the lead singer is holding back his voice too much. In many of the songs, I noticed if you turn up the music loud in a system you can barely hear his voice. I feel one thing that needs to be done is he needs to show more emotion in his words and use his "screaming voice" to his advantage. The song that really jumped out to me on the previous album was "Over", and this is because he used his powerful voice to display emotion. Many of the songs on this album are very powerful instrumentally, but the voice in many cases just doesn't match the music.

There are some good songs on this cd, but it seems to get more boring as you move on from track to track. Most Evans Blue fans will like this album, but more needs to happen with this band if they really want to make it big...

Years after the '90s, the decade will be remembered for the rise of pianist-vocalist Diana Krall. Simply put, this British Columbian-born artist is one of the most engaging musicians to emerge from the heap of scat-happy singers high on pyrotechnics, but short on poetry. Stamped with the imprimatur of the Nat King Cole trio and blessed by her apprenticeship with the late West Coast piano giant Jimmy Rowles, Krall simply sings songs the way they're supposed to be sung: with devotion to the lyric and with attention to the groove. This CD finds Krall in familiar company with compatriots Russell Malone (on guitar), bassist John Clayton, drummers Lewis Nash and Jeff Hamilton, and vibraphonist (and former Bill Evans associate) Larry Bunker--all supported by Johnny Mandel's svelte string arrangements. Krall and crew take Irving Berlin's chestnut "Let's Face the Music and Dance" and the Sinatra-signatured "I've Got You Under My Skin" south to Brazil via a sexy bossa nova. Malone's lush guitar accompaniment complements Krall's heartfelt delivery on "When I Look in Your Eyes," and Michael Franks's "Popsicle Toes" dances courtesy of Hamilton's drum work. "Devil May Care," "East of the Sun (and West of the Moon)," The Best Thing for You," and the stridish "I Can't Give You Anything but Love" groove with a minimum of waste, while Mandel's simpatico strings steal the show on "I'll String Along with You," "Pick Yourself Up," and "Do It Again." All of which further illuminate the cool fire from this fine gift from North of the Border. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Diana Krall is the best. There has never been a sexier, sultrier voice. This CD does not disappoint. She continues to get better and better. I'd have given it 5 stars, but Live in Paris is her all time best.

Though Kenny Chesney had been building a rabid fan base over the years, no one expected his 2002 release, the multi-platinum No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problems, to make him a superstar. But the Luttrell, Tenn., native had found a batch of songs that perfectly captured that scary no-man's land between adolescence and adulthood, precisely where the bulk of his followers happened to live. On its sequel, When the Sun Goes Down, the protagonists are older, with kids on the way and hectic jobs that rob them of leisure time. In fantasizing about those college keg parties and hedonism after dark, they search for a sigh of relief. Chesney understands this, and his own changes, too. Emotionally he's more at home in his own skin, and since his voice has gotten deeper and wider, he sounds increasingly confident in the studio, besting guest artist Uncle Kracker on the title song, a warmed-over Jimmy Buffett vibe. He's also matured as a writer. The majority of his four songs, two co-written with others, are no match for "There Goes My Life," the powerful unwed father ballad that served as the album's first single, or even "When I Think About Leavin'," another tune about standing at the crossroads. But his memorable "Being Drunk's a Lot Like Loving You" will burrow deep in your psyche, and prove Chesney a fine guide to confronting pain. Better keep this one handy. --Alanna Nash

For the Price it doesn't get any better

5 out of 5 stars Another Hit by Kenny.......2007-01-12

Kenny never lets me down. He just keeps getting better all the time.

5 out of 5 stars Kenny's Best Album.......2006-10-06

Out of all the Kenny Chesney albums released as of October 2006,this is by far his best work to date. All tracks on this CD are of true superior quailty. This is especially true of "There Goes My Life" and "I Go Back". A must have for all Kenny Chesney fans!!!

1 out of 5 stars Mr. Spock, the cliche replicator has gone haywire!.......2006-07-25

The lyrics to the title track sound like they were written by a 2nd grader. "When the sun goes down we'll be movin'/When the sun goes down we'll be groovin/When the sun goes down feelin' all right/Everything is hotter when the sun goes down."

It almost makes "Got it goin' on like Donkey Kong" seem intelligent.

5 out of 5 stars When The Sun Goes Down.......2006-07-17

"Sun tanned toes tickling in the sand," a line from Kenny Chesney's number one billboard top country single, When The Sun Goes Down on his When The Sun Goes Down CD, explicitly describes summertime. The CD was released February 3, 2004 on the Bna Entertainment label. Kenny Chesney is the Academy of Country Music's Entertainer of the Year. This CD has gone triple platinum, and is truly his best collection of songs. Chesney as been on the road performing for over thirteen years; the CD currently holds a four star rating. All country fans will enjoy this CD, which incorporates realistic lyrics with upbeat music.

Specifically,"The more you live, the more you know..and the more you experience, the more you reflect on everything around you. You become more aware, whether you want to or not - So, as an artist and a songwriter you look for ways to see it and tell people about it, to see if they're going through the same things," (kennychesney.com) Chesney believes. This CD reflects this belief, and obviously that is why country fans are so captivated with his music.

This album conveys reality for me. I can relate to each and every song on this album. Chesney sings from the heart; he manages to capture the essence of life and all its lessons, celebrations as well as its disappointments. The lyrics of the songs touch upon happiness, love, change, loss and determination. This album will spark many emotions within its listeners, positive or negative, but definitely real emotions.

My favorite track on this album is There Goes My Life; it is the story of a young man not ready for parenthood. The song begins with the lyrics, "All he could think about was I'm too young for this, got my whole life ahead. Hell, I'm just a kid myself, how am I going to raise one?" He views his life and freedom as being over. The words within the chorus remain the same, but the implication changes throughout the song, "There goes my life, my future, my everything. Might as well kiss it all good-bye. There goes my life." As the song continues, he realizes that his daughter has become his life. The lyrics recite, "That mistake he thought he made, covers up the refrigerator. He loves that little girl." In the end, his daughter has her Honda packed and is headed off to the west coast for college, and he cries, "There goes my life, my future, my everything."

Of course, picking a least favorite track is a very difficult task with an album of this quality. The best I can identify as least favorite would be the lyrics, not the music, of Anything But Mine. It's hard to understand the meaning of the song. It appears to be about a couple in love, walking the beach in the evening with the sounds of a carnival and local bands in the background. They are listening to a band and the song recites "in the midst of the music, I tell her I love her and we both laugh `cuz we know it isn't so." Now, what does that mean? The chorus, "In the morning I'm leaving making my way back to Cleveland. So, tonight I hope that I will do just fine, and I don't see how you could ever be anything but mine." Why is he leaving? Apparently, the song is about spring break at Daytona Beach. A couple meet and fall in love for a week and it's everything love in a moment is supposed to be. But, the week comes to an end and so does their relationship.

Indeed, Kenny Chesney fans will be thrilled with this extraordinary album. For those that are not yet Chesney fans, no doubt about it, they will be after listening to this album. From the first song, There Goes My Life to the last, Old Blue Chair, this album is a "must have" in the CD collection. Chesney is a down-to-earth, easygoing, country singer with many awesome stories and experiences to share, by way of his songs. When The Sun Goes Down is a collection of songs like no other.

When a hip-hop album opens with a collaboration with modern-day prog-rockers the Mars Volta, you know to expect the unexpected. That's pretty much what Brooklyn's El-P (born Jaime Meline) has been delivering since day one, first as a member of now-defunct indie-rap heroes Company Flow and later as founder of the maverick New York label Definitive Jux. Trent Reznor and Cat Power also show up on his first new release in five years, but El-P remains the one to watch, rattling off his typically complex rhymes about the state of the world (and the bedroom) over the cling-clang of industrial beats and frenzied noise. It's dense and weird and sometimes even scary, all of which makes it a marked improvement over the usual Saturday night boom-bap. --Aidin Vaziri

4 out of 5 stars Only a provisional four - could well become five.......2007-07-09

I'm at the stage with this album whereby I think it's pretty much a classic but I could end up losing interest soon. The real test is whether I get that hit a couple of months in where I listen to it once at find something even more spectacular about it.

So far I love it: the extended, prog-rock beats and electronics/noises of all descriptions. My favourites are probably the first track, last and many of the others in between. It's a lot easier to say which tracks I don't find 100% great. Flyentology has a slightly monotonous and boring beat which doesn't quite seem as dark or deep as some of his other tracks but it's still pretty good.

I bought this quite soon after getting Fantastic Damage and am currently in a sort of EL-P mode which could mean I'm a little biased but this is definitely worth a listen.

this is one of, or the best of the year. Everything is put together so well! it has some famous stars on it, but you don't notice them/they don't distract as often happens. It's all just layred together perfectly. Don't miss.

5 out of 5 stars I have no words........2007-06-10

I don't really like rap. Like, at all. This album made me rethink everything. As I said, I have no words, this album left me breathless. If there's one album you buy this year, make it this one. You won't regret it. Simply amazing.

5 out of 5 stars I'll Sleep When You're Dead.......2007-06-07

Hip-hop was becoming a tired institution when El-P, Bigg Jus and Mr. Len (under the moniker Company Flow) recorded one of the most stunning hip-hop albums of the '90s. Bleak, raw, and verbally devastating, 1997's Funcrusher Plus provided a real alternative to G-funk as the three fireball emcees rapped about war, corporate greed and extraterrestrial evil over bargain-basement beats and unsettling ambience. Over the next few years, El-P built up his Definitive Jux label and released a stream of high-quality recordings by some of the most vital emcees in the game, nearly all of whom used Funcrusher Plus as a blueprint to varying degrees. The label had gone quiet in 2007 when rumors of a new El-P record finally surfaced, sending excited twitters through the underground community. Some questioned the rapper's intent when they found out that the album would feature collaborations with Trent Reznor ("hmm"), The Mars Volta ("uh..."), and Chan Marshall of Cat Power ("are you serious?"), but most were fairly certain that it would pulverize in typical El-P fashion.

And pulverize it does. I'll Sleep When You're Dead feels absolutely ferocious; it's the roaring, heavy metal counterpart to Funcrusher Plus's skeletal hardcore punk, and it takes no prisoners from its galvanizing start to its death knell of an ending. Songs are packed to the gills with weird, ungodly noises, melodies appear and disappear like holographs, and dense yet nuanced rhymes roll atop percussion that could have been created by actual weaponry. Indeed, there's so much violence on this record that it should be traumatic to drink in, but El-P's skill and insight on the mic, his studio perfectionism and his flair for idiosyncratic drum programming keep the proceedings as gripping as a 13-car pileup.

Deeper listening reveals that Sleep thrives on a couple of paradoxes. First, the album maintains its focus and cohesion even as it spins off in many different directions. The doomy atmosphere of "Tasmanian Pain Coaster" doesn't sound much like the Brooklynese bounce of "EMG" or the almost operatic "Poisenville Kids No Wins," but even with the diversity (which is inevitable, what with the hundreds of sounds being employed), it's clear that there is a particular aural agenda at work. I'll Sleep When You're Dead sounds uncannily like a comic book, which isn't to knock it; after all, comic books these days attain a level of darkness and extremity that filmmakers are often too risk-averse to attempt. Imagine swarms of robotic flying insects in the Invader Zim cartoon from your worst nightmare raining down machine gun fire and you're getting close.

The second paradox has to do with El-P's lyrics, which attend to personal and universal problems as though they're both part of the same sick plan for humanity that was doomed from the very beginning. While Clipse's Malice and Pusha T believe that a worldly issue (coke dealing) affected their personal states (thickly obfuscated misery), El-P flips the algorithm: He views every act of savagery--from speeding cars to sexual abuse--as indicative of the world's endemic evil. Though it's clear that he doesn't want any part of it, he admits has no choice. He calls himself the "son of urban confusion hatched in a pit where brutes live" and "half a robotic monkey ugly born of a viral agent." Like Nas on his classic Illmatic, El-P simply speaks about what he sees and uses his observations as a form of social protest, reinforcing the idea that the most affecting hip-hop finds a middle ground between slouching back in the seat of a flashy convertible and trying to change the world. His raps have slowed down a bit from his previous work to become part of the rich milieu and to let us latch onto every grim metaphor he hurls our way, but don't worry; El-P's flow will still knock you out of your chair.

And the collaborations? They're all excellent, probably because El-P isn't concerned about flattering his guests, writing his songs his way and using Reznor, Marshall, Rodriguez-Lopez and Bixler-Zavala purely as filigree. The Mars Volta caps off the blitzkrieg "Tasmanian Pain Coaster" with an a funereal trudge, Marshall lends her emphatic torch singing to the chorus of "Poisenville Kids No Wins," and Reznor's sinister cackle seems form-fitted to the electronic torture chamber of "Flyentology." Though they do seem like unorthodox choices, especially compared to Def Jux labelmates Cage and Aesop Rock, all of these artists deal with depravity in their own music (albeit in different ways), and after a few listens, their additions on this album click oddly into place.

I'll Sleep When You're Dead is an utterly urgent recording, something that (unfortunately) feels appropriate for our perpetual state of emergency. Nas once famously spit, "I never sleep, 'cause sleep is the cousin of death," to which El-P eventually paid tribute: "The timepiece must've read early morning at least, so I laid death's cousin, woken by the silence of the peace." The title of this record, then, seems like less of a threat and more of a helpless prayer to a deaf higher power. Something tells me that, deep down, El-P wishes that there wasn't any need for him to enter the rap world and do what he does. But as long as we live on Earth, this record is as good a warning as any to sleep with one eye open.

If you are looking for peaceful, beautiful music this is for you. It is a delightful mix of some of opera's most memorable moments. Long time opera fans will be familiar with most of the arias and newcomers to opera will recognize music that has become identified with movies and commercials.

Beautifully crafted and produced, When It Falls is a fitting follow-up to Zero 7's 2001 platinum hit Simple Things. Reintroducing several of their debut's guest vocalists, the band continue to meld subtle orchestration, elegant jazz and easy-going West Coast soul and folk, creating a sound so tasteful it makes Morcheeba sound like Napalm Death. The album opens with the appropriately titled "Warm Sound," where long-time collaborator Mozez delivers his spacey soul over a quivering flute and funky keys. Later he reappears for the string-swept lullaby "Over Our Heads." Next up is newcomer Tina Dico who lends the softest of vocals to "Home," where quietly chiming guitars rise to a careful collision of brass, and "The Space Between," a techno-update of 70s folk-jazz. Much the same service is provided by Sophie Barker on "Passing By" and "In Time," which recalls the sweet innocence of early James Taylor. It's left to Sia Furler to add extra color, her slight rasp lending character to both "Somersault" and "Speed Dial No 2." Throughout, the band introduce a welter of instruments and effects, sometimes approaching the psychedelic, though they're keen to avoid an over-technological coldness--the squeak of finger on guitar string is never far away. For fans of Simple Things, it's a real treat. --Dominic Wills

5 out of 5 stars If your a fan of Zero7............2007-07-05

I put it in and I was hoping it sounded like the Zero7 I love, and it did. I play it all the time and get compliments from people who have no idea who the band is. Zero7 is a staple for me to bring life back into perspective when things get a little hectic.

5 out of 5 stars "When It Falls" Lifts You Up.......2007-05-15

The helmsmen of Zero 7, Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker, got their start engineering and mixing music for groups like Pet Shop Boys, Radiohead, and Sneaker Pimps. Their ear for sweet soul sounds and eye for under-produced trip-hop enticed a host of collaborators to join them for their debut album, Simple Things, an almost unreal work of chillout genius that has since gone platinum.

Their sophomore work, "When It Falls," features some of the same voices found on the first record, as well as all of that record's gentle genius. Bittersweet and beautiful, "When It Falls" shows us that even the softest blow can pack a whallop.

This record's delicate notes blow from winds of change, moving music that is mostly about the beautifully dear delerium to be found both in change and in remaining watchfully still. Tina Dico's delicate vocals color gold and red the autumnal ballads of "Home" and "The Space Between." Sia Furler croons gold summer spirit into the over-green forests of "Somersault" and "Speed Dial No. 2." Mozez's yearning voice gives sweet sap to the springtime blooms of "Warm Sound" and "Morning Song." And the incomparable Sophie Barker chills the soul with her wintery whispers in the dark and delightful "Passing By" and "In Time." It's a pastiche of passions, a rainbow arc of moods, the colorful shattering point between stormy rains and nourishing sun.

An album that strikes the heart without resorting to cheese, that celebrates the sensuality of sorrow and the tug of joy, "When It Falls" proves that maybe the man was right when he sang "everything is beautiful in its own way." At any rate, if anything's beautiful, it's this album.

5 out of 5 stars It will change you.......2007-03-18

This album is responsible for turning my musical taste in a different direction. After years of banging my head to the loudest, fastest, and darkest death metal, I discovered it was giving me a headache.
A freind loaned me this ZERO7 CD, and after the last track had played, I knew I had found a new genre to call home.
If you can listen to this CD without replaying any of the tracks at least once, it would be a first. The artist's voices, the instruments, and the rythms take you on a winding road that you'll want to travel over and over again. I have now listened to this CD for over a year now, and whenever I pop it into the CD player, it still feels like I'm coming home. Instead of headaches, I find myself totally relaxed. (You can't review a ZERO7 album without using the word "relax").

5 out of 5 stars Rainbow of sounds and colors.......2006-12-26

For fans of new age and soothing, interesting and innovative music Zero 7 fits the bill perfectly. This British band and its style are classified as Downtempo, Trip hop, Ambient music and as Acid jazz, to me they are simply a big mish mash of goodness.

The first time that I listened to this album was while soaking in a hot tub with herbal bath salts. I don't know what melted the stress off my bones better, the hot water or the music, reaching deep within. I was mesmerized, especially the first time I heard the song "Somersault", the music, part ambient, with soft female vocals and melancholic undertones stood out to me in a sea of songs in a long time. The music is cool and relaxing, soothing and warm, sensual and dreamy and still a bit funky. I can always rely on Zero 7 and the magic their sounds produce whether I'm tired or lazy or in the mood for good reading or writing music.

Some songs are sang by men and some by women, a nice combination as they make for a more interesting cd versus those that sound like a constant sting of melody barely changed by any dynamics. Since they use different artists in collaboration on each cd, blending their style with the artists own uniqueness creates a whole new level of higher expectation that always comes through when you buy their CD's.

Related artists for those unfamiliar wth Zero 7 or those who want more of this style would be Air, Thievery Corportaion, Massie Attack, Morcheeba, Tosca, Royksopp, Radiohead, Moby, Underworld, Goldfrapp and Apex Twin just to name a few.

This album is great for taking a bath, getting a massage or simply sitting down with a nice hot beverage and melting stress and winter chills away. Totally beautiful and dearly loved by me, it's one of those albums I would buy for every person I know if I needed a good present in a pinch.

- Kasia S.

4 out of 5 stars Enter The Chill-Zone.......2006-12-18

I'm relatively new to certain styles of music; but I do experiment from time to time and check out new genres and bands. Zero 7 was recommended to me by a couple of people, so I picked up "When It Falls", and have been very pleased with the results.....

Zero 7 play a very spacey, stylish and mood-altering form of ambient techno that is very alluring and relaxing. Paired with a variety of singers (who mostly croon in a breathless, low-key manner) this album features washes of sound and atmosphere accentuated with mellow guitar passages here and there, and is very textural in it's approach. It sounds a bit like Enya meets Moby. Excellent chill-out music when you need to relax and kick back after a long day at work. I'm interested in hearing more from this band.

It's no mean feat being the world's foremost crossover artist--a task that risks alienating two disparate audiences and everyone in between--but somebody had to do it, and Andrea Bocelli again walks that artistic tightrope with impressive deftness. The title may imply a casual intimacy (indeed, the singer admits to taking a more "hands-on" approach to the album's conception and production), but it's a collection that nonetheless continues to expand on the Italian tenor's ambitious internationalism. His collaboration "Sin Tu Amor" immerses his voice in the Gipsy Kings' own rich Iberian folk-pop fusion with compelling results, while "Where Love Goes" (a musical focal point of the film Lazarus Child), his English language duet with 11-year-old prodigy Holly Stell, achieves an almost liturgical grace. "Tu Ci Sei" (You Are There) continues in the romantic vein of his familiar theme "Con Te Partiro" (Time to Say Goodbye), while the single "Dell' Amore Non Si Sa" (With Love You Never Know) features Bocelli in a signature dramatic tour de force collaboration with arranger Mauro Malavasi, the accomplished producer of the singer's Romanza and Sogno albums. Bocelli's shrewd taste and vocal prowess here not only again redeem an oft-maligned genre, but elevate it considerably in the bargain. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars HOW DO YOU SAY,"WOW," IN ITALIAN?.......2007-06-22

BEFORE I START, LET ME SAY, THAT I AM A DANCE CLUB GUY AND THAT, ORDINARILY, THIS IS NOT MY KIND OF MUSIC. OF COURSE, I LAUGH AS I SAY THAT, AS, APPARENTLY, A NEW DOOR HAS OPENED IN MY LIFE, THANKS TO THIS MAN.
A FEW YEARS AGO I HAD HEARD ANDREA DO, "CON TE PARTIRO," ON A PBS SPECIAL AND MY EYES FILLED WITH TEARS THAT ANY HUMAN COULD MAKE SUCH SOUNDS. I WAS ASTOUNDED; MORE ASTOUNDING, STILL, WAS TO HEAR THIS ALBUM AND FIND THAT HIS VOICE HAD ACTUALLY VASTLY IMPOVED OVER TIME. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? " CON TE..," PALES IN COMPARISON TO THE QUALITY OF THIS WORK; THE TRACKS ON THIS CD ARE PERFECT, FULL, RICH, AND MORE MOVING THAN ANYTHING I HAVE EVER HEARD. I HAVE HAD IT A WEEK, NOW, AND I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO LISTEN TO ANYTHING ELSE FOR VERY LONG, AND I PLAY IT OVER AND OVER. IT HAS BEEN MANY YEARS SINCE I HAVE BEEN AFFECTED LIKE THIS BY ANY VOCAL CD. IF HE NEVER RECORDED AGAIN HE WOULD HAVE MADE A MARK ON THE WORLD OF AUDIO NEVER TO BE ERASED OR FORGOTTEN. WHAT A VOICE! WHAT SONGS! THE CUT, "LIBERTA," ABSOLUTELY KILLS ME WITH FEELINGS OF JOY AND MARVEL. I HAVE EVEN TAKEN UP STUDYING ITALIAN BECAUSE OF IT.
TREAT YOURSELF, AND A GOOD FRIEND, TO THE SOUNDS ON THIS CD. SIT AND WATCH A SUNSET WITH IT ON... I MEAN NOW!

5 out of 5 stars Just buy it........2007-05-30

If you like soft music that make's you feel up beat, just order a Andrea Bocelli CD. Listening to his CD's after being at work all day, is like having an option in life to hear and be somewhere else.

5 out of 5 stars Teamo, Andrea Bocelli .......2007-03-08

One of his best. Need the lyrics translated from the Italian to the English inside the casing next time. Nonetheless, Mr. Bocelli has a beautiful voice. It made my wife and all my female co-workers swoon when they listened to it.

4 out of 5 stars A new style from Andrea........2007-02-24

There were some ugly songs in here.(I absolutely hate to say that about anything Andrea.)But the good far outshone the bad.
Un Nouvo Giorno stunned me the first time I heard it.It was so unlike anything I had heard from Andrea- very pop.But it soon grew on me.
Liberta is amazing.Very catchy and upbeat.
Sempre O Mai is my favorite. It keeps its tempo up and has the best of Andrea and pop.Great song.

So this album was really a double album with pop and classical songs interspersed.A good mix from the master.

1 out of 5 stars Not happy with delivery (or non delivery) of this item.......2007-01-16

When I ordered this on 12/04/2006 they said I would have it before Christmas. Then right before Christmas the delivery date was changed to mid-January. So I had to cancel my order and go, at the last minute, buy it at a store because it was a Christmas present. I wasn't happy about it and won't be buying from amazon for the holidays any longer.
