Product Description
Wendy ditched the orchestral arrangements of her first two albums for a more pensive, personal feel on this 1975 recording.

Amazing.......2007-03-31
When I was younger I had the casette recording of this album. I listened to it so many times I actually wore the tape so thin you could hear both sides (A and B) at the same time. I've been looking at second hand shops for this album ever since, I never imagined it was still being made. Every single song on this album is bound to become a family favorite. Just because songs are safe for kids to listen to doesn't mean they have no use for adults. There are some beautiful love songs on this album. Stereotypical children's songs get old fast. How many times can you listen to twinkle twinkle little star and the alphabet song before going crazy because they're the same tune? These songs will give a much needed burst of color into your child's music collection.
Suberb Kids' Album.......2007-03-20
This is definitely one you can listen to in the car. It's on the second generation, as I just bought it for my granddaughter. Her mama (my daughter) was so excited because she grew up on it, too!
In Harmony: A Sesame Street Record.......2007-02-26
This is a beautiful, timeless album. My son just turned 30. He loved it when he was young, and his daughter loves it now. It's not too cutesy or goofy, but really good music done by wonderful artists.
"In Harmony".......2007-02-03
"In Harmony" is a CD that I often checked out from the library when my children were small. Our favorites on the CD include James Taylor singing about Jelly Man Kelly and Bette Midler singing about Blueberry Pie. Linda Ronstadt sings about wanting a horse. Livingston Taylor, James' brother, sings about having his pajamas on.
Carly Simon and her sister are on the CD, also. The Simon-Taylor family get together on the song "In Harmony". Too bad that they didn't stay in harmony.
I received the CD in less than a week and it was still in the original shrink wrap.
Listen to a classic.......2007-01-16
Music for the whole family; if you grew up with Sesame Street, or watched it with your own children, you'll enjoy this blend of compositions.

Long lost great music.......2006-10-19
I recorded a couple songs from this album off of FM radio thirty-some years ago. Through the years I continued listening to the music, but forgot the album and artist. Thanks to the internet, I was able to track down this information about the same time that this CD was released. On listening to the CD, I discovered that there are many other equally great songs on the album. The lyrics, arrangements, and singing are all first-rate. Its release on CD was long overdue and I hope that others will re-discover this gem. In my own collection, I rank "The Main Refrain" up with the work of Laura Nyro, Carole King, and Joni Mitchell.
One Of The Great '70's Singer/Songwriter Classics!.......2006-06-23
This is perhaps Wendy Waldman's most accessible work. The arrangements are lush and intricate, yet Waldman's instantly recognizable voice remains the center of attraction. "Instantly recognizable," at least, for those of us who remember the confusing swirl of musical styles competing for attention in the latter half of the seventies. Waldman did get some airplay on FM radio, but somehow managed to never attain the superstardom that she deserved, and this is all the more mysterious when one listens to THE MAIN REFRAIN today. What is not to like about this record? Impeccable musicianship abounds, including that of Wendy herself, on several instruments, melodies are gorgeous and memorable, lyrics are thoughtful and sometimes quite original, and the singing is pitch-perfect. Wendy Waldman did not possess the most beautiful instrument, but her voice had personality to spare, and she did hit all of the notes (I don't imagine that much fixing needed to be done in the mixing). What really sets this album apart from so many of its type, is the excellent songwriting and stellar playing, with Kenny Edwards, Karla Bonoff & Andrew Gold (her Bryndle partners), Waddy Wachtel, Taj Mahal, Jim Horn, Linda Ronstadt, and David Kemper among the many stars lending support. In the end, though, this is Wendy Waldman's triumph, and includes arguably her very best song, 'Back By Fall,' a lovely ballad, in her own words, "about leaving your own comfort to go help others in need." 'Is He Coming At All' was one of a handful of Waldman's songs to get extensive FM radio play, as was the glorious, sparkling 'Goodbye Summerwind,' with a chorus of horns and Linda, Karla and Wendy on backing vocals. More horns and sublime harmonies grace the "urban shuffle" of the title track, and 'The Frenchman' is Waldman at her most haunting; this song stayed with me for months after I first heard it. If one song could sum up the theme of this great album, it would be 'Living Is Good;' a more joyful ode to Life would be hard to find! THE MAIN REFRAIN is a pleasure to hear from beginning to end. One thing I did not mention in my other W. W. reviews was the fine choice to have Waldman herself contribute liner notes to all five Collectors Choice releases of her Warner Bros. catalogue. Upon reading these commentaries, I learned more about the woman than I ever did back when all of this music was new.
Mid-70s Classic.......2005-12-14
I don't know how "Is He Coming At All" got left off Wendy's greatest hits album (Love is the Only Goal). This song was a mainstay on the early "soft-rock" stations of the mid-70s.
The quality of the CD is good. There's a little hiss on my copy, only noticeable in the quieter sections while wearing headphones -- still much cleaner than my old LP ever was.
This CD is long overdue.

Nice album terrible sound.......2005-10-24
So I was thrilled to see all Wendy Waldman's albums get reissued on CD. But the sound on all of em is TERRIBLE. The levels are so low...gotta crank up the stereo to hear anything. what's up with that? So so disappointing.
Singer/Songwriter: Best Kept Secret of the Seventies.......2005-10-07
With a voice and songwriting talent reminiscent of both Carole King and Laura Nyro, Wendy Waldman is one of those forgotten artists of the seventies whose catalog has been criminally neglected, and who is finally getting a long overdue reissue series on CD. When Warner Brothers Archives series released LOVE IS THE ONLY GOAL: THE BEST OF WENDY WALDMAN several years back, I was mildly disappointed, as I often am by so-called "hits" collections, by the song selections, not because they weren't worthy choices (it was a decent compilation with virtually no duds, and a couple of previously unreleased tracks), but because so many of my own favorites, like "Constant Companion" and "Secrets" were left off. Those tunes are among a solid set that makes up Waldman's self-titled third album, which is my pick for Best Wendy Waldman Album. This is a great place to start, if you want to explore her music beyond the W. B. Archives collection. Then, if you like what you hear here, go back and get GYPSY SYMPHONY (W. W.'s 2nd), and THE MAIN REFRAIN (her 4th, most ambitious, and possibly most accessible). All five of the Collector's Choice reissues are worth owning, and will reward repeated listenings. Comparisons to King and Nyro notwithstanding, Waldman has a style all her own, and her highly personal lyrics are made stronger by memorable melodies and atmospheric, energetic instrumental backing. She chooses her musicians wisely, and they always rise to the occasion. Although Waldman sits front and center, and there is never any doubt who is dealing the cards, she gives her supporting players plenty of room to breathe and to shine, and they often deliver the aces, pushing Waldman's songs over that often elusive line that divides good from great ... and as much as I admire King and Nyro, Waldman beats both of them, in my book!

A Truly Great Sophomore Effort.......2006-06-23
Having been so thrilled with the CD issue of WENDY WALDMAN, her third Warner Brothers album, I intended to give all five Collectors Choice releases five stars, but I had not heard these recordings in a long time. The reality did not live up to my anticipation, and only THE MAIN REFRAIN ended up getting another five-star rating. This should not be discouraging for long-time fans OR newer, more adventurous listeners. There is plenty here to love. Waldman not only avoided the sophomore jinx with this effort, she easily equaled her stunning debut. I would add a half star if I could, just for the opening track 'My Love Is All I Know,' which immediately ensnares the listener in a wash of guitars and keyboards and soaring vocals, 'My Name is Love,' a masterful, rather edgy description of "Love" in the first person, and 'Mad Mad Me,' as psychotic as pop music ever gets. Beauty meets the inner Beast. 'The Good Love' is plain gorgeous, despite uncharacteristically cliched lyrics, and 'Cold Back On Me' is a slice of spine-tingling disco-pop. It's interesting that this almost overproduced album precedes a stripped-down, naked third album that is as spare and subtle as this one is lush and baroque.

Weakest Of The Five, But Still Worth Collecting.......2006-06-23
Get the other four Collectors Choice reissues first, but having said that, I still recommend STRANGE COMPANY. It is more rock-oriented than the others, although it could have been mastered better (and louder). The highlight is called 'The Wind In New York City,' a long track that begins with a beautiful, classical-flavored transitional piece called 'Two Hawks Flying.' It's worth the price of the CD. 'The Man Is Mine' is also very good, with a catchy hook and some of Wendy's most impassioned singing. 'Love Is The Only Goal' is quintessential Waldman, with a grand, swelling chorus. On 'Long Hot Summer Nights' she sounds like she was having a great time in the studio, and the song will strike a chord with anyone who fondly recalls cruising down city streets in the summer with a best friend. Only in comparison with the other four Wendy Waldman Warner Bros. records does this one only rate three stars, but it is, head and shoulders, way above most of today's commercial schlock!
Read the "fine print" ;-).......2006-01-12
This is my overall favorite Wendy Waldman album. I was worried that I'd have to burn a CD from my scratchy, old LP -- this one took a long time to come out on CD.
As another reviewer mentioned, the volume is a little low on this one. That might stand out if you play it in rotation with others on a CD changer. Also, You can hear a little hiss on the quieter sections (especially noticeable if your wearing headphones). Still, this is better than my old LP ever sounded.
And, if you owned the LP, you've probably read the "fake" tabloid articles on the front and back cover. You'll be happy to know that those articles have been kept for the CD, but you might need a strong set of glasses to read them. (Worth the effort!)

She Should Have Been A HUGE Star!.......2006-06-23
Maybe her songwriting was too sophisticated, or maybe her voice wasn't commercial enough (although I'm not the only one who has noted vocal similarities to both Laura Nyro and Carole King), but Wendy Waldman should have been a much bigger star than she was. It must have been deeply frustrating for such a hugely talented writer and performer to craft five nearly perfect albums and to see none of them chart. She did have a few modestly successful singles, but that was about it. Yet this woman has it all (she's still around; I got all five of her Collectors Choice reissues from her own website, autographed, no less, plus other items, including her long out-of-print vinyl album, WHICH WAY TO MAIN STREET): a distinctive, flexible voice, songwriting, arranging and production chops equal to any of her greatest contemporaries, advanced technique on several instruments, and impeccable taste in musicians. This debut is a great place to start, but all five of her Warner Brothers albums are worthy of repeated listening, with GYPSY SYMPHONY and the self-titled third album the best, in my opinion, followed by THE MAIN REFRAIN; STRANGE COMPANY is the weakest but has some bright spots that make it worth buying, if you like the others. This record contains some songs that were covered in short order by Judy Collins and Maria Muldaur, so why didn't the general public sit up and take notice? Today's younger female vocalists all sound alike to me, save the more independent-minded, who don't get radio play, and several old-timers who are still struggling to be heard. If you want a singer/songwriter whose voice is unique and full of character, whose songs have both beautiful melodies and interesting lyrics, listen to any of Wendy Waldman's first records. If you're anything like me, you will be hooked! I've reviewed the other CD's, and they do all suffer from one irritating flaw: while the sound is both clean and warm, the record level is somewhat lower than normal, which makes it hard to mix the songs in with others on "shuffle" mode. Don't let that stop you! Just crank up the volume and enjoy...
FINALLY ON CD!.......2005-11-06
Although Waldman has had an interesting and successful career as performer and songwriter, she never had the career that this, her first album, promised. Unlike some of her singer-songwriter contemporaries, she never had that "pop" hit that would have spelled mainstream success. Instead, she produced a string of distinguished folk-rock albums, none better than this one. Up til now, only a few of these cuts were available on CD (on the "Love is the Only Goal" compilation). "Thinking of You" is a great love song, which demonstrates exactly how the whole introspective-singer-songwriter "thing" was in fact related to the period's more socially-conscious music. "Pirate Ships" is a beautiful lullaby for all ages (no wonder Judy Collins quickly covered it), "Gringo en Mexico" was a smart and funny expression of the impulse toward (what we would later call) "world music.' (no wonder Maria Muldaur quickly covered it). Think of her as California's best answer to Laura Nyro.

Not The Whole Story.......2005-10-03
I look forward to writing reviews of some of the upcoming reissues of all five of Wendy Waldman's 70's albums on CD, as I own them all on vinyl, and she is one of my very favorite singer/songwriters. I believe she deserves greater fame, and I wish she had not "retired" as a solo performer. In fact, however, Waldman has never gone away, resurfacing now and then with the "supergroup" Bryndle, along with Karla Bonoff, Andrew Gold and Kenny Edwards, and writing songs for other (mostly country) singers. Where she shines the brightest, though, is when she performs her own wonderful compositions (with a voice somewhere between the tonal qualities of Carole King and Laura Nyro). The only reason I don't rate this CD even more highly than I do is that it leaves off several of my own, personal favorites, and I already know that I will rate at least 3 of the upcoming reissues a full 5 stars. Although this collection is pretty solid, it is by no means the whole story! However, as a Wendy Waldman collector, it is nice to have a couple of previously unreleased gems: "Charles River Song," and a demo version of "Mad Mad Me."
Thank you and goodbye..........2005-07-22
Thank you "Motowns Truth" for your bitter rant about absolutely nothing to do with this release. The song in question isn't even included on this disc. As for the ACTUAL contents, this CD is great for all you Laura Nyro, Carole King, Karla Bonoff, Ricki Lee Jones kinda folks. Wendy's voice even resembles Nyro's at times. Dig it.
Save The Best For Last..........2005-07-15
It's been told time and time again. The ever so sweet story of how Vanessa Williams' hit "Save the Best for Last" was written by Phil Galdston, Wendy Waldman & Jon Lind. While it's touching and inspiring, it's no "realer" than Pamela Anderson's double D's.
Truth be told, the 3 bought the song off of the Coleman Brothers, a duo of songwriters who stole the song from Vernon Bullock (Motown songwriter/producer) for an estimated $160,000. Originally written in 1988 for his wife and to be sung by Whitney Houston, the Coleman brothers and Vernon were scheduled to complete the composition; however the Colman's apparently had "other" plans for the work.
My personal favorite part of the interview with Wendy is when she says " `This is so dark; I thought you guys meant it to be a positive song. So we agreed to change the lyric concept, making it positive. We came up with some unique lines: `Sometimes the snow comes down in June, sometimes the sun comes round the moon.'" Said to Galdston about the supposed lyrics originally written for the song, when in all actuality, Bullock, living in Colorado at the time, came up with those particular lyrics no thanks to an actual snow fall in June. Bullock had no idea about what was going on until the song came on the radio in 1995. You can even check out the copyright here: http://www.loc.gov/cgi-bin/formprocessor/copyright/locis.pl
While I could go on and on with the FACTS of this hit, I'll simply leave it to time for the whole story to hit light. I will Save the Best For Last...
The Best of Wendy Waldman.......2004-08-03
The songs on this album represent a sampling of Waldman's diverse and spiritually uplifting songwriting style, taking us back to the seventies and early eighties. From the earthy "Love Has Got Me" to the haunting "Main Refrain",these beautiful and tenderly composed tunes will have listeners crossing over to another dimension of time and taking them to the heart and soul of the singer.
Wendy's latest CD.......2001-10-27
What a treat to hear Wendy Waldman again. Great lyrics, she uses some great musicians, and she has the voice of an angel. Hope to hear more from her.

Customer Reviews:
Great CD - Received Damaged.......2007-06-27
This CD was to be used for my May 19,2007 bride for her ceremony music.
The CD arrived damaged and Amazon did not have anymore in stock.
Thank God for an understanding bride.
Disappointing.......2004-10-31
A mostly music compilation that sounds like a creative mixing genius put it together. Saddly, the wedding entrance march is sung in German (I think). Some of the music is a little "thin" instead of being "full bodied". The wedding exit march will put listeners to sleep. I wish listening samples had been available or I would have saved the money.

Excellent singer/songwriter/arranger.......2003-06-09
"Letters Home" was long over-due (her last record was at least 4 years earlier). Her crafting of songs, playing of guitars and keyboards, and hard-core lead and background vocals cannot leave you untouched. Get it if you can--it's out-of-print on CD--and I'm sure you will be impressed. If you've not heard any of her earlier solo records or her newer work with Bryndle, then definitely check it out. She (they) is/are truly outstanding if you're into laid-back thoughtful music. Greg.

Wendy Waldman Has Never Been Better!.......2007-01-21
I have loved Wendy Waldman back to her early albums (most of which I own). I loved her music then, and I love her music now. She is an excellent songwriter and also lets you know the "song is hers" when she performs it herself. I ordered this cd a few years ago when I found out about it by pure luck (somewhere in Washington state I think)! What a find! It is so enjoyable, I usually play the cd all the way through each time. There are, of course, some special ones particularly "Rode Right Next To You" will touch your heart as it has mine if you like singer/songwriter music anyway. I hope I find the right person to "Will" this cd to when I die.
