Combining girl-group hooks and harmonies with high-octane, Motor City garage rock, the Detroit Cobras conjure the 1960s era of Top 40 AM radio and vinyl 45s. Though the results are considerably poppier than the band's name and the light bondage of the album title and cover might suggest, singer Rachel Nagy has attitude to burn and the mixed-gender band plays with plenty of rough-hewn energy. Material (none of it written by the band) includes minor '60s hits such as "Nothing But a Heartache" and "Leave My Kitten Alone," obscurities from classic songwriters such as Gerry Goffin and Jerry Ragavoy (as well as James Brown and Dr. John) and a hopped-up rendition of the Depression-era folk standard "On a Monday." --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
pretty good.......2007-06-08
I like the album a lot. I have been a fan of the Detroit cobras for a few years now, and though I dont think any of their albums will top "Baby" this one comes pretty close. Typical of the cobras good energy and great vocals.
A Step Up.......2007-05-20
Tied & True is a step up for one of the most fun Garage acts out there. The Detroit Cobras have been touring an d playing for a couple of years now. With each album they manage to uncover about a dozen rare R&B gems and turn those into their own. Their strength lies in the up tempo songs. The Cobras manage to hide their weaknesses best when they get to speed it up a notch. For tied and true that means that "As Long as I have You" (an original for Garnet Mims) or Little Willie John's "Leave My Kitten Alone" become stand out tracks. Yet Tied and True is also the first Cobras album where they manage to hold the ballads together at least. Dori Gayson's "Try Love" is one of those pleasant surprises on this new Cobras record. Rachel Nagy is as sloppy as it is passionate and affectionate. The love for R&B shines through making her limitations as a vocalist secondary. The Cobras seldom improve on the originals, but they display a deep understanding of R&B with every new record. They don't try to copy the artists but reinterpreted the songs in a way that feels comfortable to the band. With the help of Greg Cartwright from the Reigning Sound makes tied and true another fine effort from the Cobras and the first that sounds like some extra effort has gone into the production which helps the album tremendously. Some of the tracks sound layered, reminiscent of Phil Spector in way, without them loosing their raw and sparse edge. The Cobras is simply the best bar band or oldies act out there, every new album is a joy and you won't regret buying this one. Although I must ad that it almost seems a sin to buy it on cd and not wait on the vinyl release.
a decent effort, but nothing amazing.......2007-04-26
This is probably the weakest album for this great band. I suspect that only hardcore cobra fans are going to enjoy this one. Pass on this one, see them live and grab Mink,Rabbit or Rat and enjoy!!

Album Description
Depending on who's counting, there are anywhere from 100 to n-frigging-thousand subgenres of rock music a band can slide into for easy categorization. And depending on where you drop the laser on Fair to Midland's debut album, Fables From a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times is True, at least half of those subgenres are being reinvented at once. But to call this Dallas quintet merely eclectic is to sell them way short. No, Fair to Midland are masters of fusing those subgenres into something that's cohesive, intensely focused, and in a bold new category all its own.
Recorded with art-rock super-producer David Bottrill (Tool, Muse, Peter Gabriel), Fables From a Mayfly finds Fair to Midland stretching out even further into the aggression and atmospherics at their core while taking their inherent gift for melody to new levels. Tracks such as "Kyla Cries Cologne," "April Fools and Eggmen," and the gripping first single, "Dance of the Manatee", showcase Fair to Midland's flair for combining progged-out virtuosity with lead-heavy riffs, dynamic tidal waves, and frontman Darroh Sudderth's operatic vocals. Even when the volume lets up--as in the softer, spacier folds of "The Wife, The Kids, and the White Picket Fence" and "Say When"--Fair to Midland create sonic tidal waves big enough to level arenas.
With Fables From a Mayfly, Fair to Midland have truly delivered, capturing the kinetic energy of their live show while harnessing the array of influences that make them impossible to pigeonhole. "For the most part, our musical tastes are completely different," says Sudderth, who rounds out the band with guitarist Cliff Campbell, drummer Brett Stowers, bassist Jon Dicken, and keyboardist/electronics manipulator Matt Langley. "We've just gotten better at listening to each other over the years. All of our songs are just us trying to find a happy medium between what everyone in the band listens to--and I think that actually being able to do that is what makes us so different from a lot of other `rock' bands today."
Customer Reviews:
Another Tomorrow Fills Up My Front Window.......2007-07-21
Every so often a band comes along that just completely blows your mind. Fair to Midland is one of those bands. Every song on Fables From a Mayfly is simply amazing. The lyrics are no less than pure poetry. The combination of lead vocalist Darroh Sudderth's throaty growling and amazing singing, along with the talents of each of the other band members (Cliff, John, Matt, and Brett) form what I can only describe as a work of art. The band revisit some of the songs from they're second album, inter.funda.stifle, and while they are the same, they are also different. Each of them sounds more refined and filled-out. "Dance of the Manatee," which is probably they're most well-known track, has been transformed into a pulverizing, yet strangely brilliant tune. The biggest surprise (and my favorite track) comes from the bands first album, The Carbon Copy Silver Lining. "A Wolf Descends Upon the Spanish Sahara" is fan-freakin-tastic. Every time I hear this song it sends chills up my spine. My recommendation: BUY THIS ALBUM. You won't regret it.
Fair to Midland's Dance of the Manatee ...........2007-07-19
Fair to Midland - Dance of the Manatee is a excellently crafted song. Singer Darroh Sudderth's voice is very powerful through out the song. His singing style is very unique and very catchy to anyones ear.
The whole album proves to be a wonderious treat to try. The lyrics and the music provides endless minutes of listening pleasure and the artwork on the album is strangly beautiful and reminds me of old circus style drawings and pictures.
Awesome Beakout.......2007-07-15
I heard these guys on the radio not long before the album came out and I immediately loved it. I listen to a variety of rock, classic rock, metal, prog etc. and found it to be refreshing. It's one of those cds where you can listen to it all the whole way through. I highly recommend it.
repetitive.......2007-07-14
I saw them live when they opened for As I Lay Dying at the Chameleon in Lancaster. Everyone in the pit stopped moshing and held up the thumbs down singn so they could see it. All the vocals sound the same, and when he does his hardcore voice i can't help but laugh at his miserable attempts. Every chorus, verse, breakdown, and stupid keyboard thing sounds the same. Dance of the Manatee is their only good song, and even that song is pretty weak. They're awful live, and the producer of the album must have done so much tuning to their recordings to even get them to the unimpressive point they are at now. Don't buy this album.
Fair to Midland Proves they are the Best Up-and-coming Band this Year.......2007-07-06
Here's the quickie: Fair to Midland's "Fables From a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times is True" is a wonderful display of eclectic songs styles, haunting vocals and clever lyrics. You'll find it has a hard time leaving your CD player.
Now for the more in depth review. This release is the band's first major label debut. What does that mean for the sound? Well, you won't need to guess, when you can compare, since six of the tracks are re-released from their previous independent "Inter.Funda.Stifle." With a bigger budget, the band comes across as more polished and definitive.
They handle the heavy tracks like "Dance of the Manatee" with a practiced flurry, and lead us into slower-paced yet just as hauntingly powerful tunes, like "Say When", with an ease that is due in no small way to the vocalist, Darroh Sudderth, who shows with every syllable sung just how amazing of a range he has. The song that showcases his voice like no other would be "The Wolf Descends upon the Spanish Sahara," with his melodic wail sounding the best that it ever has.
Finally, too, is there a member of the band whose duties are labeled as "keys", and who is actually one the most integral parts of the band itself! Matt Langley's skilled sounds help give this band what so many others are missing. Cliff Cambell's guitar is nice and varied, and balanced well with Jon Dicken's bass lines that never get boring. Brett Stower's definitely shows off what drums can do for the music, as heard in "Tall Tales Taste Like Sour Grapes." Also, the band has done well to add little bits of extra layers in between the songs that makes multiple play-throughs interesting!
The improved quality and the updated songs show us not only how far Fair to Midland has come, but their potential for future growth. The new songs on this album are as good as any they've done thus far. One would be hard pressed to find a definitive genre for this band; finally, an upcoming band with a sound all its own. "Fable's From a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times is True" is the best album of the year so far, and well worth the purchase.

Elvis Costello kicked off his debut album with a formal device that would also serve his next two long-players well: the first thing you hear is his voice. That opening phrase--"Now that your picture's in the paper..."--was more than sneakily, if not intentionally, appropriate, since Costello was quickly declared the second coming. It's become de rigueur to dis the pub-rock backing of U.S. band Clover, but their work here is satisfactorily edgy; guitarist John McFee makes some of the arrangements with his wailingly articulate fills. The remastered Rhino reissue includes a full second disc of demos and rarities. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Rock and roll blasphemy? .......2007-07-23
I admit I'm an anomaly...an EC fan who does not love My Aim Is True. I place it high in a second tier of Costello's standard recordings.
'No Dancing', 'Mystery Dance' and 'Angels' are in my Top 50 EC favorites as is 'Stranger in the House' from the Rykodisc/Rhino reissues. 'Welcome to the Working Week' is enjoyable. I also like 'Radio Sweetheart' and 'Cheap Reward' from the R/R extended discs.
I'm not going to bash the rest of 'Aim'. I simply don't find it as appealing as most of the reviewers here.
A final note...Live versions of 'Aim' songs can be found on some of the second discs of Rhino's reissues and the hard to find 'Costello and Nieve'. They are typically superior to the studio versions and are worth
seeking out.
Plain and simple.......2007-04-10
One of the best debut albums--what they were called back before CDs--ever released. Though Elvis' infamous anger has tempered and he has ventured into an admirable array of musical genres, the depth and urgency of his songwriting skills are evident and prophetic here. Just try to grow weary of repeated plays of "Mystery Dance" and "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes." You will fail because they are endlessly listenable. This is a text book of rock music.
Elvis Costello: The Real King.......2007-02-01
More Classic '1977' Gold. This contains some of Declans finest Moments and really none of his banter. Songs like "Blame It On Cain" and "Watching The Detectives" set to Prove that 1977 was the Peak year!!
Great Debut.......2007-01-01
I'm not sure of the exact date, but it was the winter of 77/78, and my friends and I drove thru a blizzard to catch Elvis in a little lecture hall at C.W. Post College on Long Island, N.Y. Did it ever open our eyes, ears and minds. He played most of this album plus some of what was to be "This Years Model".I had purchased "My Aim Is True"after hearing, "Alison" on the radio but that song was only a hint at the rest of what was on the album. Songs like "Watching The Detectives", "Mystery Dance" and "Less Than Zero" are brillant and still stand up some 30 years later. This is one of the all time best debut albums and previewed an incredible output for the next 2 years. I wish that the Attractions had played on this but the playing on it is fine but not nearly as intense as it was live. It's albums and shows like this that remind me why I love rock 'n roll.
the first and greatest elvis........2006-05-23
at the time that this album came out i had just lost my little boy, my husband had left me for a woman 24 years my junior, & i had a serious rash all up & down my left side. i was DEPRESSED. then i heard this music & suddenly i wanted to wear lipstick again. i wanted to wear lipstick & i wanted to dance. what a great album. and to this day in 2006 it still is! the best elvis costello album known to man (and that's saying something).

good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27
We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

This cd is excellent it has a lot of very good music and true to the original sound, Am getting a lot of enjoyment, highly recomended
TV Theme Songs.......2007-01-13
This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.
TV themes.......2006-07-05
Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.
Deja Vu.......2006-02-17
Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

Customer Reviews:
(3.5 Stars) Give Us More, Mos!.......2007-06-26
We finally have it. After many years of waiting and anticipating, Mos Def has finally blessed us with a new album to follow-up Black on Both Sides and the strange offering The New Danger. Many fans were thrown off by The New Danger with its rock and blues influences throughout. True Magic is definitely a unique monster all its own (if you look at the picture, you will notice that the cd has no artwork or liner notes...it's just the disc!) After listening to True Magic, you will see that Mos Def is more about having fun with music nowadays than trying to prove a point. A lot of people will probably listen and think the songs sound rushed, but it seems to be more carefree and loose like an organized promo cd or mixtape. Even though most of the songs have that same feel, the standouts on here have to be "Crime And Medicine" (which borrow's the beat and melody from GZA's "Liquid Sword"), "Dollar Day (a melodic yet political battle cry about the whole Hurricane Katrina fiasco rapped over the beat from Juvenile's "Nolia Clap"), and "Lifetime" (an airy serenade reminiscent of "Umi Says" from Black On Both Sides). Other notables is the simple uplifting chants on "There Is A Way," the underground hip-hop feel of "Undeniable," and the analytical and accurate depiction of the mentality in the streets on "Fake Bonanza." There are some tracks that are more like extended interludes and aren't really tracks at all. So anybody that is a true die-hard fan of Mos Def will enjoy this album. Others who simply jumped on the bandwagon when "Umi Says" blew up and aren't really into Mos like that will still look at this as if it's The New Danger or something. Let's just hope True Magic is just a teaser, and there's really a more complete album on the way.
Mos Def is TRUE MAGIC!!!.......2007-06-02
As usual Mos has delivered messages for the thinking man/woman through music. He is without a doubt, fascinating with a consciousness that will not let up.
I have not picked a favorite track as of yet because I like them all, but I am quite fond of 'Undeniable' this week. I am quite stimulated and motivated by Mos' music and lyrical content as always.
Def-finately hot.......2007-05-09
This album has a bang to it right from the start, and the lyrics are right on the money today.
True Hip Hop heads want more.......2007-04-25
this whole album is blaze!!! real mathematics is knowledge of self and universal law.
bottomline, Hip Hop as a culture is under attack. it's up to REAL MC's like Mos, Kweli, Nas, Common,KRS-1, Rakim, the whole WU, Wyclef, the ENTIRE Boot Camp and rappers TRUE to Hip Hop like DMX (i feel you on that Year of the Dog), Mobb Deep (dump G-Unot, don't need em), Jay Z, Busta and some other heads to keep real hip hop alive.
she taken hostage and s**t looks grim.
Exeptional Hip-Hop.......2007-04-17
Anyone complaining about this album needs to listen to it again and again. As far as flow of the album, its simply wonderful listening straight through. There isn't a song on there I would skip. The wordplay and lyrics are some of his best and some of the best I have heard all year. Next to The Roots - Game Theory - this album outshines everything else. The lyrical content is current well put and the production is really original. Mos even reps GZA's Liquid Swords, which is arguably the best, or at least most lyrical hip-hop album in history, and Mos does it quite well. His flow just grabs you and the content speaks to anyone. "Dollar Day" jumped out at me as an instant classic. As far as the new albums out that speak about Hurricane Katrina, this song outshines them all, Mos simply kills it. Listening to the album, it seems that each song works well with the others. Nothing is overdone, and he covers an incredibly wide spectrum of issues that are all important. The album is simply wonderful to listen to, and if you have doubts, put it on repeat.

Spot on funny.......2007-07-19
Daniel Tosh's musings are crude, yet witty. The world according to Tosh would contain basketball-boxing as well as bigger, stronger, faster athletes. I'm not normally a comedy buff, but Daniel Tosh had my entire family rolling on the floor laughing. This is a great CD!
More Dave Attell than Dane Cook.......2007-06-18
This is one very funny concert, probably because he does push the limits. I have heard some people in here compare him to Dane Cook. Uhhh, I have a copy of Dane Cook's CDs and this one by Tosh is way funnier. Whereas Cook relies on being a cool buddy to the audience and relaying longwinded and contrived stories, Tosh tells jokes and he pushes the audience by saying things he knows they think are funny, but are perhaps a little afraid to laugh at in public. The smart humor had me just thinking more about Dave Attell, than Dane Cook.
Good Stuff.......2007-05-12
Daniel Tosh is a very funny comedian. I am a difficult person to please when it comes to comedy, but this is one that you just have to buy....and it comes with his CD enclosed which is also really entertaining. Only complaint is I wish the DVD was more than 22 minutes, but since the CD is included, it is worth the purchase price.
You did it because you're whore!.......2007-05-08
One might not rush out and buy this album based on Tosh's Comedy Central Presents special. The problem with those specials is that you don't get a real feel for the comedian because they are often rushed to make the time limit and they always have to censor themselves.
This album is from a Southern California show and it's absolutely hilarious. Tosh has very unique takes on various topics and he does it with an attitude. On several bits, he will challenge the audience to the point of insulting them directly. His take on plastic surgery is brilliant and he basically tells every female audience member with fake breasts that they are whores! He's not an insult comic, so it's done with a sense of playfulness. All of his material is taken with that approach and he pulls it off.
Admittedly, his delivery and inflection is similar to Dane Cook. That's about where the similarity between the two comics begins and ends. I remember seeing Tosh in the late 90's. Dane Cook's popularity has been a more recent phenomenon. Daniel Tosh's material is very well-written, thought out and "edgey." I'm happy for Dane Cook's success, but he relies too much on physical humor and bits that are just observations with no real commentary.
I've had this CD for about 2 weeks and I've listen to it at least 6 times. I highly recommend it for people who love stand-up comedy.
Does Dane Cook collect royalties from this?.......2007-05-01
It's a funny album, there's no question about that. But at least seventeen times throughout the album you will momentarily forget that you're not listening to Dane Cook. Tosh has lifted Cook's tone down to the last detail. Every once in a while he channels Jim Gaffigan for a moment, but 98% of the time it's pure Dane Cook. It doesn't mean he's not funny, he definitely is. I just wish he'd come up with his own thing.
Oh, and if it turns out that Daniel Tosh has been doing this way longer than Dane Cook and it's Cook who lifted his act from Tosh, then I apologize. But I'm thinking probably not.

Book Description
"Kirtan is the calling, the crying, the reaching across infinite spaceand digging into the heart's deepest wellto touch and be touched by the Divine Presence," teaches world music pioneer Jai Uttal. On Kirtan! The Art and Practice of Ecstatic Chant, Jai guides listeners through the practice of Kirtansinging the many names of God and Goddessan essential part of Bhakti yoga, or the yoga of devotion. This sacred music form is for all people; there are no experts, nor beginners, and the practice itself is the teacher, guiding us to ourselves. Listeners join Jai Uttal to explore: the power of ancient Sanskrit syllables in chant to invoke the Divine, how to open the voice and learn to love the sound that comes from our bodies, more than two hours of music recorded by Jai Uttal to commune with the Divine through sacred chant, and the path of Bhakti and Kirtan, the journey of surrender, and much more.

"A Joyful Noise".......2007-05-16
When I heard an interview on NPR with this artist,Jai Uttal, and music from his CD I couldn't get it out of my mind. It is "a joyful noise" that lifts the spirit and energizes. His very personal explanation of Kirtan on Track 2 gives one an understanding of the spiritual basis of the music and even if it is not a path that you might follow you can't help but be swept up in the chanting. I play it in the car on days when I feel stressed and it removes all that chatter in my head and helps me arrive at my destination uplifted and in the present. His interpretation of the ancient chants using non traditional instruments and renditions is appealing and engaging. P.S.It is a 2 disc set so you can have one at home and one in the car!
Not As Ecstatic As I Like To Be.......2007-04-22
Although a double CD set, both disks pose a problem to this reviewer's taste. Each contains a rather lengthy exposition by the artist on the nature of Bhakti (Devotional) Yoga sandwiched in the program. Jai Uttal has a very pleasant speaking voice & the material was helpful, even inspiring--but do you really want to hear it all over again everytime you play either discs? I know I don't. The musical material is engaging, but not particularly special. It is authentic mantra, but without the technical brilliance of many such CDs (see links below). I don't regret buying it--again, BUT it won't become a treasured favorite. I don't think it would turn-on people who weren't mantra fanatics like me or a real fan of the artist--or a devotee of Kirtan.

Devotional music at its sweetest.......2007-03-15
This 2-CD set is one of the best introductions to contemporary kirtan I've come across (and I own many kirtan CDs). Aside from the wonderful spoken section, where Jai Uttal chats informally about what kirtan is, the selection of songs is truly heartwarming. I love both CDs, but find I listen over and over again particularly to the second one for its variety of moods and styles. Jai's voice really cuts deep and brings out the intensity and authenticity of his own devotion to the path of music and the heart.
In addition, the musicianship of everyone featured on this set is superb and adds so much to the listening experience. It is hard not to sing along and feel the blessings flow, even if you are not a singer...and that is exactly the point.
Kirtan: The Art and Practice of Ecstatic Chant by jai Uttal.......2007-03-09
Wonderful kirtan, by a great artist.
How can I express my joy?.......2007-03-06
I was a big fan of Krishna Das and I still am. A couple of weeks ago, for the first time in my life, I heard Jai Uttal's 'Radha Rani ki Jai, Maha Rani ki Jai' - Track # 4 on Disc 2. Like all good music does to my soul, I was so enchanted that I played the same track again and again till I lost count. I wasted no time in getting both the discs and my favorites are as follows:
Disc 1: Track # 3 'Radha Govinda'
Disc 2: Track # 1 'Durga Pahimam', Track # 3 'Jaya Radha', Track # 4 'Radha Rani'
Originally coming from India and being a big proponent of 'Bhakthi Yoga' (Path of devotion and Divine love for God), I can say from the depths of my heart that Jai Uttal sings with such soulful melody and love, it takes my breath away every single time I listen to the tracks mentioned above. It surprises me so much that while I cannot listen to certain types of music even once leave alone repeating my listening experience, the kind of music that Jai Uttal, Krishna Das and others produce, I can listen for a lifetime and experience that joy again and again.

Whether she has to put on a cowboy hat, kick it at the club, or cake on rock-chick quantities of black eyeliner, Kimberley Locke is going to see to it that you like her. Based on a True Story, the 2003 American Idol finalist's second CD, wanders through a dressing room of genres, wiggling into rock ("Trust Myself"), strutting around in R&B and dance ("Supawoman" and "Doin' It Tonite"), and unbuttoning contemporary country ("Fall"). Locke, an artist who otherwise exhibits a Queen Latifah-like gift for keeping it real, probably should have stuck to what fits best: pop (see the excellent first single "Changes"). That she doesn't--that she instead chooses to make an Idol-style show of her versatility--is a little bit of a letdown. But not much. Because she pumps personality and warmheartedness into every song, effectively if not ingeniously carrying off a boatload of styles, she'll still have a lock on a lot of mental lists of all-time-favorite female AI contestants, and deservedly. -Tammy La Gorce
Album Description
Wearing her heart on her sleeve, Kimberley knows her fans will be able to relate to this album because music is the universal language. In her first attempts at songwriting, the product is a collection of songs highlighting the good and bad points of love and friendship. Taking calculated risks and exercising her faith has proven to be the key to unlocking the music that lives within Kimberley Locke.

Another great album.......2007-07-08
Another great album! This one has definitely grown on me...great voice and a nice variety of tunes. I just love her!
Based on a True REVIEW.......2007-06-28
Wow, great voice and songs. Amazing that she is not as hot as Kelly or Carrie.
Fairly Strong Sophomore Effort.......2007-06-26
One of the better singers to come out of the AMERICAN IDOL franchise, Kimberley Locke follows up 2004's ONE LOVE with a similar-sounding set of songs in BASED ON A TRUE STORY. As her previous set demonstrated, Locke is best served musically when wrapping her warm vocals around pop/rock arrangements--opening track "Change" is a wonderfullly adult rock ballad that never succumbs to sappy melodrama, while the country-tinged "Fall" and pop nugget "Any Which Way" showcase Locke's sublime vocal work. It's when trendy production creeps in that the album falters--official first single "Supawoman", justly ignored at radio, is abysmal, while "Doin It Tonite" sounds like a cheap Neptunes-produced knock-off. As a previous reviewer stated, it's a shame listeners(radio and otherwise) won't accept a black woman singing pop-rock music, which is probably why the album provides a little catering for the R&B audience. Nevertheless, if Locke had stuck to more songs along the lines of "Change" or "Fall", there would have been little, if anything, to fault about this set.
SUPERB!!!!.......2007-06-08
Kimberley Locke's second CD, "Based On A True Story," is perhaps the finest release to come from any former American Idol contestant to date. It is extremely good, with a nice variety of musical styles. Kimberley sings her heart out, and she has a simply wonderful vocal range. I loved her first release, yet this one is ten times better. I am a big fan of many American Idol alumni, including Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia, Carrie Underwood... and I must say that Kimberley Locke outshines them all on this splendid release. Try it. It is well worth your money. GREAT CD!!!
This is not your typical American Idol Album!.......2007-06-02
First of all, I don't typically write reviews for albums, nor am I the typical AMerican Idol album buyer. However, if you are looking for a great album, with a great voice, great songs, and something to listen THE WHOLE WAY THROUGH, then buy this album.
If you like "8th world Wonder," you will love this album. Most songs are similar in sound as "8th," what I would call Adult Rock. Kimberly not only has a great voice, that is very powerful, she co-wrote most of the songs.
I can't pick a favorite, but I will give you a rundown of the tracks on this album:
1. Change - This is an amazing song, amazing voice. Most artists now when you listen to their vocals, there are several layers of their voice to make it stronger. She does not have that....her voice is that powerful.
2. Any Which way - Rock song with a great chorus and a soaring bridge at the end! It will get you going.
3. Trust Myself - again, another rock song. This one will have you believing in yourself. Again, awesome bridge at the end!
4. Supawoman - to be honest, when this song was released last year as a fast song, I didn't like it. However, this is a slowed down version and I have found myself addicted to it. Listen to the lyrics.
5. Doin' It tonight - a simple dance song. At first is seemed too simple, but I love her lower range in this song. You will start dancing when you hear it.
6. Friend Like You - DOn't be fooled by the title....this is not a happy song, however, she uses the Rock sound perfectly here. A great song.
7. Fall - This will bring tears to your eyes. Beautiful slow song with amazing, powerful vocals.
8. I don't wanna know - Again, the rock sound works so well for her. Good song.
9. Talk about us - this is more R&B than the rest of the album, but it is a nice change up.
10. You don't have to be strong - Blues song, very nicely done.
11. Everyday Angels - A feel good anthem! Nicely done
12. Band of Gold - WOW! She truly has a gift to make any song great!
This album is worth it. It's not like any other AI album. You will be listening to this album over and over. Let me know if you can pick just one favorite!

John Rutter Collection is glorious!.......2007-07-23
This music begins my day in uplifting way. Each day a different piece catches my attention. I am so glad to have it.
John Rutter Collection.......2007-02-19
This CD is one of several that features Rutter directing his own choir. It has a good cross section of the John Rutter compositions, and is a good starting place for someone who has not heard Rutter's music before. I think you will be "hooked" if you really love choral music.
Typically gorgeous Rutter.......2005-12-20
I love John Rutter's music. Especially the "For the Beauty of the Earth" that is on this CD. Rutter is not the most inventive or varied composer of modern music, but if you have a taste for traditional choral writing with some angelic children's chorus singing, then you will probably share my enjoyment of Rutter's writing. Unfortunately I cannot give this CD 5 stars when it seems there is a drum set tapping annoyingly away on several of the songs. I do not understand this at all and am bothered by it every time I listen to those songs. It's a shame, because otherwise I love the music, and think it is lushly written, and simply but beautifully performed. I would highly suggest listening to sample track 3 before purchasing -- you can hear what sounds like a ride-cymbal right at the very end of the sample. This sound occurs in several of the songs on this recording.
Wonderful!.......2005-12-03
I am a huge John Rutter fan. The lilting melodies, the poignant lyrics and the lush orchestrations make his music not only accessable but also uplifting. This compilation, although drawing from many other previous recordings, is a great composite of his wirk. The sound is exquisite. Even if you own other recordings of this music, this is worthwhile.
To sample Rutter's best music, this is the one........2005-06-30
I purchased this CD as an introduction to the music of John Rutter and went on to purchase many more of his compositions. Still, this remains my favorite collection. It is choral music at its absolute finest. Far from "just church music", this CD has songs of faith, a few Christmas carols, a Celtic song for lovers, and even a child's tune or two. While most of the pieces are peaceful, warm, and thought-provoking, a few are up-tempo and lively. In my opinion, it is a perfectly balanced collection in which one song flows beautifully into the next with no sense of a jarring change of pace. If you have any interest in choral music, begin with the best...John Rutter... and this superb arrangement. Highly recommended.
