5 star band, gets a 3 star "best of" collection...........2006-05-09
Disc 1: The hallucinegenic-inducing songs=
* Haunted When the Minutes Drag
* All In My Mind (acoustic version) (the regular version sounds so upbeat and happy, the acoustic version sounds like the soundtrack to man's impending doom. j/k, sorta)
* An American Dream (brilliant slow opening, then it gets fast:0(
* The Light (dark, ominous, but in a good way. then again most of these songs can be described like that)
* Waiting for the Flood
* Earth, Sun, Moon
* I Feel Speed (love this over-looked, hypnotic song. it will put you to sleep, or put you in a dream-like state of consciousness. don't listen to this while driving)
* Sweet F.A. (a deceptively sweet, quiet, and catchy acoustic number)
* Judgement Day
* Deep Deep Down (off their electronica-influenced cd, LIFT. this is not electronic-sounding at all. this song is like sex. it builds and builds, climaxes, then keeps on going, snuggling with you until you fall asleep. or hit repeat and do it all over again. it's a moody(yet kinda rocks), sexy(and kinda raunchy), almost sinisterly wicked-sounding song. at over 9 minutes, the second half is waaay repetative, unless you're already under it's sensual hypnosis and grip like i was. gee, i must really like this one)
* Party's Not Over (off LIFT too, but not electronic sounding either)
Disc 2: The other greats=
* Kundalini Express (their best ever? it's fast, and tripped out!)
* Yin and Yang the Flower Pot Man (actual title of song)
* All In My Mind
* Ball of Confusion(big commercial hit)
* Mirror People
* No New Tale to Tell (personal all-time favorite)
* So Alive (the other big commercial hit)
* Rock and Roll Babylon
* Sweet Lover Hangover (sounds mainstream, shoulda been a hit)
* Holy Fool (it IS mainstream, but still not a hit...but who cares)
To die-hards, hopefully my list doesn't offend too much. To newcomers, download away and check out what you're missing(to the timid and uninitiated start with 'disc 2'). Btw, they also have a video collection on dvd for under $20 that's worth owning.

Customer Reviews:
Best remix collection I've heard.......2007-05-18
Most remix collections seem to have a few good tracks among a bunch of tracks that aren't worth listening to more than once. This two-disc set is the exception to that rule; nearly every song included is tasty aural bliss.
I would have expected Collide's layered organic and electronic sound to be hard to do justice while taking in new directions for remixing, but each of these artists have succeeded, often spectacularly so. Only one track is difficult for me to enjoy: Somewhere/Orchestral Mix; I find it an interesting attempt but it's not for me. The rest range from very enjoyable to music I might never want to take out of my CD player.
Get this album for The Lunatics Have Taken Over the Asylum (see also the DVD Like the Hunted), and enjoy the rest of the sweet and sultry gems from Slither Thing/Amish Rake Fight Mix to the delightfully sad Crushed/Out of Control Mix, plus plenty more.
To Collide fans, even those skeptical of remixes, this is a must-own. To those not yet a fan of Collide, you might start with Some Kind of Strange or Chasing the Ghost and then pick this up - though I'm not sure it matters, and this would still make a great listen without any prior knowledge of Collide.
Amazingly Brilliant!!! .......2007-04-12
Listen to the samples on this site just so you can say "Yeah, I'm a smart consumer." If you like any combination of Collide, you're gonna end up buying Vortex, it is most certainly a treat for the ears and the imagination.
Get lost in the Vortex.......2006-10-10
These two disks hold a variety of moods from the frantic to the meditative, there is a remix for almost all occasions and then some. If you're just starting out with your Collide obsession this is a great album to showcase their diversity and complexity; and if you're deep into your Collide wall to wall shrine then this album is hard to beat and will surely earn a coveted spot on your shrine to Collide.
What an awesome find!.......2006-08-20
I absolutely adore Collide, and plan to try out their other CDs. It's amazing the feeling the music gives you. It's very ethereal, and makes you feel like you're somewhere else. Definitely a great buy, even if you're not into this type of music.
Others I would recommend in this genre are Claire Voyant (Time and the Maiden), Delerium (Karma), Hungry Lucy (To Kill a King), and Lamb (any of them, especially Lamb and Fear of Fours).

Imagine for a moment that the survivors of the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash in 1977 had decided to keep going and had replaced Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines with the Clash's Joe Strummer and Mick Jones. The reborn band would have had it all: redneck country-rock with in-your-face class consciousness and cockney punk-rock with swing and guitar chops. It would have sounded a lot like the BottleRockets on their second album, The Brooklyn Side. When the BottleRockets' chief singer-songwriter Brian Henneman wants to sing about the American class structure, what does he do? He tells jokes about buying a "1000 Dollar Car." "A thousand-dollar car ain't gonna roll," he sings over grinding, Neil Youngish guitar chords, "till you put at least another thousand in the hole/Sink your money in and there you are:/The owner of a two-thousand-dollar thousand-dollar car." --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:

viva nostalgia!.......2005-08-06
'earth, sun, moon' was arguably l&r's artistic peak, demonstrating a range previous unseen in earlier albums. it walks the fine line between artistic credibility and commecial success. 'no new tale to tell' proved to be a massive college hit, and understandably so. the 'wooo wooo WOOO wooo' intro is a definite ear-catcher and strangely appropriate intro. 'no new tale to tell's' outro is one of the finer outros your likely to hear, especially with daniel ash's trademark guitar burning up the background: 'when your up, it's a long way down, when you're down, it's a long way up. it's all the same thing, no new tale to tell.' existentialism, for some reason, always sounds better in a catchy melody.
a few of 'express'' crumbs landed on 'earth, sun, moon's' table. the album's first two tracks, 'mirror people' and 'youth' are awash in the same fuzzy, psychedelic sonics that made 'express' such a standout album. based on these two tracks, the listener might think he or she is on her way to 'express' part ii. however, 'welcome tomorrow' dispells any notion that this is another 'express.' the following tracks, 'no new tale to tell,' 'here on earth,' 'waiting for the flood,' and 'rainbird' (the exception being the rawkish 'lazy'), and 'everybody wants to go to heaven' see l&r leaning towards more pastoral/spiritual plains, and asking questions about life, religion, god, family, etc. and it succeeds fabulously.
'earth, sun, moon' saw the band pull the reigns in on their trademark sound without abandoning their identity, all the while expanding their pallet and creating their definitive album.

It would be a mistake to claim that Missouri's answer to Neil Young's Crazy Horse has gone soft, but their first release in more than three years shows greater range and reflection than is typical for the rock-solid quartet. The opening "Better than Broken," the brooding "Happy Anniversary," and the acoustic, wistful "Where I Come From" all evoke the aftermath of romantic upheaval (or, in "Suffering Servant," its uncertainty). "Middle Man" could be the band's signature tune, defining a sensibility that is Middle American in more than geography. The sage wisdom of frontman Brian Henneman's "Blind" and the twang of "Feeling Down" show the band's countrier side, while "I Quit" has the groove of retro soul. Yet the guitar finale of the seven-minute, album-closing title song finds the Bottle Rockets as explosive as ever. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

Bottle Rockets Return To Form.......2006-08-16
The next song Middle Man is outstanding and is a nice observation from Brian Henneman on where he sees himself in the increasingly polarized world we live in. Happy Anniversary, Blind and Suffering Servant are also excellent songs. There are no bad songs though a couple tend to drag on a bit.
The culmination is the final song, Zoysia which might be the best BR song ever. It's 7 minutes of tortured perfection. It reminds me somewhat of the quality songs Neil Young used to do with Crazy Horse many years ago. Not sure Mr. Young could write something quite this good and subtle anymore.
In summary, this isn't a masterpiece though I can't think of anything in recent years that would qualify. It is a highly enjoyable, intelligently written slice of Americana rock and roll from one of the few artists that still knows how to do it. Highly recommended for lovers of quality music in the roots rock, country-rock, alt-rock and classic rock genres.

Released during the era of leisure suits and pet rocks, the film Superman: The Movie has aged about as well. But the often-clumsy charms of Richard Donner's cartoonish, hit-and-miss take on the Man of Steel was blessed with at least one superlative artistic effort: John Williams's epic score. The composer's Oscar-nominated music (coming on the heels of Star Wars and Close Encounters) was a wall-to-wall heroic symphony, rife with memorable melodies and ominous arrangements. Almost every original cut on this soundtrack appears in an expanded version, supplemented by nearly a dozen previously unreleased cues and alternate takes. Featuring a deluxe slipcase and extensive, new liner notes, this is the definitive release of one of Maestro Williams's greatest scores. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Original 1978 Recording?.......2007-04-04
AWESOME! John Williams shows again why he's the master of movie scores.......2006-08-31
The original soundtrack release from 1978, while still an excellent collection, was sadly lacking in several of the best cues from the film. Most important of these was Track 12 (Disc 1) in which the helicopter crashes on the Daily Planet's roof and dangles precariously above the street. Williams builds on it, introducing Superman's theme into it as Clark Kent runs across the street, then rips open his shirt to reveal the 'S' - the symbol of the House of El - then enters the revolving door & exits as Superman. At the end of this is one of my favorite cues; the Superman theme is played as the Man of Steel appears above Metropolis, flying over the city on the hunt for criminals. 'Crime of the Century' (Track 6, Disc 2) was one of my favorite cues; this one portrayed the missile convoy as it made its way along the freeway, where Luthor staged the accident to get his cronies close enough to sabotage the missiles. There are too many new tracks to list here that should have been included the first time around, just a lack of space precluded this from happening.

I love "Love & Rockets"........2004-07-28
A very good album from a fun band!.......2004-04-24
The breakdown:
"**** (Jungle Law)" - The sound this song has is actually cooler than the song itself. It's a neo-psychedelic sounding riff souped-up by sampled percussion and a stomping, almost plodding drone. The title stands for the "F" word which is also the name of the main character in the song, apparently a real loser. ***1/2
"No Big Deal" - another basic blues run cranked out with background guitar antics and more fuzz bass. ***1/2
"The Purest Blue" - an art piece featuring multitasker Daniel Ash on sax. Ash takes the lead vocals on the songs he writes, about half of them. Equally versatile partner David J writes and sings on the other half including this one. ***1/2
"Motorcycle" - great rocker propelled by 2 basses, loaded with guitar and bass feedback and a thudding beat full of riding cymbals from drummer Kevin Haskins. Towards the end, guitars evoke a motorcycle from hell accelerating into the stratosphere. ****1/2
"I Feel Speed" - a sort of coda or continuation of "Motorcycle" (and the last song on the 1rst side of the original LP), this song is gorgeous and soothing save for the reemergence of the demonic motorcycle. ****1/2
"Bound for Hell" - Probably the most fundamentally blues-based tune on LOVE AND ROCKETS, with David J blowing harp and cool lyrics about, well, going to hell. David J starts out confessing his lack of faith and desire for something to believe in. He then relates a harrowing, darkly comical dream that wakes him with a start and sends him to his knees to pray. ****
"The Teardrop Collector" - a 50's style finger-snapper with a subdued, dreamy quality. Ash lays down those trademark L&R acoustic guitars and overdubs electric guitar and "ghost" keyboards that perfectly portray the rather downer "that's life" sentiment. ****1/2
"So Alive" - A fun classic that deserves the wide airplay it got. Ash sings the words, "I'm alive, so alive" like a 300 year old vampire in need of a blood fix. In contrast, the background singers are angelic. "I wish I could stop/ Switch off the clock/ Make it all happen for you." *****
"Rock N Roll Babylon" - a real switch after "So Alive," this tune is dominated by an acoustic guitar sound that hearkens back to SEVENTH DREAM OF TEENAGE HEAVEN. Makes adventurous use of a miniature string section and more great sax from Ash, but seems to end rather abruptly. ****
"No Words No More" - Once again Daniel Ash confesses to being lazy as he did on "Lazy" from EARTH SUN & MOON. It seems to be a personal issue with him. Here he longs for, "No words, no reasons why." The song also illustrates another common L&R theme: a desire for paradise as a blissful, burdenless state. "No Words No More" is a fabulously dreamy song, largely aided by heavily processed vibes played by Kevin Haskins. It's a cool way to close the album. *****

If you don't believe the Bottle Rockets are contenders for the title of world's greatest rock & roll band, you should check out their 1994 release, The Brooklyn Side, the decade's best rock & roll record: an out-of-fashion, unhoped-for blend of Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Clash, funny and scary and catchy all at once. It was so good it was released twice--first on the late, lamented indie label ESD and then again on Atlantic. That's why it took three years for the follow-up, which was actually recorded in July 1996, to emerge. Because less is at stake in the songs, 24 Hours a Day isn't quite as good as The Brooklyn Side, but it's a remarkable piece of work just the same.Like the Blasters, the Bottle Rockets realize that roots are not an empty suit to hide in but a pair of shoulders to stand on so one can reach even higher. The four scruffy musicians from Festus, Missouri, can sound like fading Grand Ole Opry stars on an understated country song like "Dohack Joe," and they can sound like a Southern-rock bar band on an overstated rocker like "Slo Toms." These familiar formulas give the Bottle Rockets an entrée into the Middle America they spring from and speak to, but the band strips the forms of their predictability and sentimentality. The quartet plays with a sort of controlled anarchy, as if at any moment they might leap into epiphany or fall apart altogether--and that creates a suspense that makes you want to listen to each new measure. And lead singer/chief songwriter Brian Henneman is so quick to laugh at his own protagonists that the blue-collar romanticism of Mellencamp and Petty is boiled away to reveal lives as they're actually lived. --Geoffrey Himes

I'm Gonna Settle This Argument Right Here.......2003-04-21
Welfare Music vs. Kit Kat Clock: Are you kidding me? Welfare Music is brilliant both musically and lyrically, while Kit Kat Clock is merely a very good song with silly lyrics. Advantage - The Brooklyn Side.
Gravity Fails vs. When I Was Dumb: Both great songs, but Gravity Fails has a little more kick, and again, When I Was Dumb has sillier lyrics. Advantage - The Brooklyn Side
I'll Be Comin' Around vs. 24 Hours A Day: Talk about a tough one. Both excellent songs, with I'll Be Comin' Around rocking and sweet and 24 Hours A Day rocking and funny. I'll go with rocking and sweet. Advantage - The Brooklyn Side
Radar Gun vs. Smokin' 100s Alone: Another challenge. These songs are both great, yet totally different. Radar Gun rides a filthy ZZ Top-ish riff and amusing lyrics to glory. Smokin' 100s Alone is a tuneful depressing tearjerker. Like Mariah Carey, I don't wanna cry. Advantage - The Brooklyn Side
Sunday Sports vs. Slo Toms: 24 Hours a Day finally gets on the board with Slo Toms and its crunchy riffs. It doesn't get much cooler than when Brian Henneman suggests they head on over to Slo Toms to check out `Gary play Sweet Home Alabama on his Peavey guitar.' Advantage - 24 Hours a Day
Pot of Gold vs. Indianapolis: Pot of Gold is charming and simple, but Indianapolis is one of the best songs The Bottle Rockets have ever written. It'll make you think twice about making a road trip through Indiana, that's for sure. One thing I can't figure out: Is Brian being sincere or facetious when he says he `hopes they play that John Cougar one more time'? Advantage - 24 Hours a Day
1000 Dollar Car vs. Things You Didn't Know: 1000 Dollar Car is clever and catchy. Wish I could say the same for Things You Didn't Know. Advantage - The Brooklyn Side
Idiot's Revenge vs. One of You: This one's also not even close. Idiot's Revenge is a rocking account of some pretentious chick who thinks if "you like country music, then you deserve to die." By contrast, One of You is slow and a bit dull - you keep waiting for it to build up to something, then nothing happens. Advantage - The Brooklyn Side
Young Lovers in Town vs. Perfect Far Away: I could go either way on this one, though give the nod to Perfect Far Away since it does such a nice job of ripping off the riff from Michael Jackson's Beat It and manages to incorporate the lyric `she ripped through this heart of mine like a weed-eater with brand new line'. Advantage - 24 Hours a Day
Take Me to the Bank vs. Waitin' on a Train: Take Me to the Bank recalls Bocephus in a relatively good though derivative way. Waitin' on a Train is catchier and more original with a nice guitar solo in the middle. Advantage - 24 Hours a Day
What More Can I Do vs. Dohack Joe: What Can I Do is the only weak song on The Brooklyn Side, sounding like a bad alternate version of the Rolling Stones' "Far Away Eyes". "Dohack Joe" is pleasant if mildly ineffectual. Tell me, what exactly is `that java face' anyway? Advantage - 24 Hours a Day
Stuck in a Rut vs. Rich Man: This where things start to become a blowout. Stuck in a Rut is a cool grinder that sounds like it wouldn't be out of place on Lynyrd Skynyrd's Gimme Back My Bullets album. Rich Man starts out with some nice picking but ends up sounding uninspired, telling the tired tale of a rich man who works so hard he forgets to enjoy life. Advantage - The Brooklyn Side
I Wanna Come Home vs. Turn For the Worse: I Wanna Come Home features some sweet, though sad, lyrics and even sweeter guitar. Turn For the Worse is a good song, but listen to what it is competing with. Just listen to it. Advantage - The Brooklyn Side
Queen of the World vs. Nothing: The Bottle Rockets didn't even bother to record a 14th song for 24 Hours A Day. Wise choice. It's unlikely they could have come up with anything to rival Queen of the World anyway, a classic tear in your IBC song if I've ever heard one. When Brian describes that girl "singin' Hank Williams when (he) walked through the door", you can picture the scene. For me it conjures up images of a twenty-something Connie Criswell crooning Your Cheatin' Heart at the bar in the late, lamented Olde Towne Pizza. Queen of the World probably sounds a lot like something Hank would have recorded if he'd been alive in the 1990s instead of the 1940s. Darn near perfection.
Final Score: The Brooklyn Side 9, Twenty-Four Hours a Day 5
Ratings: The Brooklyn Side 5 stars, Twenty-Four Hours a Day 4 stars
Advice: Buy them both, fool!

Brian Henneman got his start with Uncle Tupelo, cutting his teeth with the best this then emerging genre had to offer. While this album has not received the aclaim that "The Brooklyn Side" has, it stands on it's own merit.
A friend of mine told me once that "Smokin' 100's Alone" was perhaps the stupidest song he had ever heard. I will admit that this portrait of trailer-park isolation may not be everyone's idea of stimulating lyrical content, but it does paint a picture in vivid detail.
Henneman's gift is telling the stories of a regular life, asking the questions we have all wanted to ask "Who knows where time goes? I waste mine thinking 'bout it, I suppose" and places it within rock and roll's most current and exciting format.
The Bottle Rockets are one of the few bands today who are putting down in the studio exactly what you will get in the bar or concert hall; loud, raunchy rock with a heavy back end, gravel-edged vocals and real life reflections on everyday situations.
If you're looking for alt.country hooks and humor with a grinding metal backbone, look no further than 24 hours a day.

+ 1/2 stars...Excellent Intro to Texas Blues Man.......2006-06-23
Most of these tracks feature Sam Myers on vocals/harmonica. The now seventy-year-old Myers (who has worked with such blues giants as Elmore James) joined the band in 1986. In addition, Myers is a fine songwriter ("I Done Quit Getting Sloppy Drunk" and "My Heart Cries Out for You" on this anthology). [Trivia alert: That's Beavis and Butt-head creator Mike Judge on bass on the opening track. He was a member of the Rockets from 1987-1990.]
This is an excellent update of 1992's anthology THRU THE YEARS. My only complaint is that BLAST OFF duplicates eleven of those songs. But overall, this is a throughly enjoyable and satisfying collection of this modern Texas blues artist. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
