Product Description
This Washington, DC duo consists of underground cult guitar hero Mik Barr (CROMTECH) and drummer Joshua Barr (ABCs, SUPERSYSTEM). This record is one long track and takes a new tack for the band, repetition. Along with the obvious metal influences, some new elements arise here including, but not limited to, minimalism and Middle Eastern music. Brutal prog.

5 out of 5 stars Big L's Debut Is A Classic.......2007-04-10

BIG L was an amazing MC he had good lyrics teaching you about street knowledge this album is a classic to me THE SOURCE magazine gave it 4 MIC'S a near classic but to me it is his lyrics are amazing BIG L had HARLEM on lock some of my favorite tracks on the album are MVP & STREET STRUCK & actually at the time a young JAY-Z got his first debut on DA GRAVEYARD amazing lyrics good beats what else could you want from a hip/hop album? BUY IT you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars most overrated album ever?.......2006-12-27

please, don't hate on me for just giving this 3 stars.. i'm a huge d.i.t.c. fan and i got love for L (rest in peace). but this album isn't really that great. L is a ill lyricist far above your average, but the freestyle flow and lack of concept in many songs makes me kind of bored. also i don't think the beats are what they could be. you can't even compare them to the beats on the true ditc-classics: funky technician, word life, runaway slave, awakening, stunt blunts & hiphop etc.
and let's be real about it... this lp isn't even top 10 from 1995.
doe ore die, krs-one, dah shinin, livin proof, liquid swords, ob4cl, legal drug money, good fellas, labcabin california, 2000, soul food are all much better albums.

5 out of 5 stars street struck.......2006-12-23

all i gotta say, had great potential. too bad his life had to end so short. a deffinant great rapper.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing Flow...Amazing Lyrics (Rating: 9 out of 10- -4.5 stars).......2006-12-06

Harlem's own Big L was one of the most amazing non commercialized rappers in the game. He wasn't trying to be a star or a big named rapper, just a freestyle legend. And let me tell you, he can spit some shhhh off the top of his dome (if you get a chance look for an album called "Harlem's Greatest: A Freestyle History"). I first heard of this guy on the Music Choice Channel when the song "All Luv" by D.I.T.C. was being played one night. He didn't have the best verse in the song (outshinned by Lord Finesse) but he grabbed my attention.

Listening to this album, I understood where Big L's style came from and how he elevated it. "Put It On" was a dope single and a way to start off the album. My favorite song on the entire album would have to be "No Endz, No Skinz", a song about women out for a mans money. A lot of these songs through out the album he would talk about murder ("All Black") and living the inner city life ("Danger Zone"). Lyrically he was good to the point where you would hit the rewind button a few times ("I wouldn't give a chick 10 cents to put cheese on a whopper"). But at the same time he kinda overdid it to have people like "what the hell?" ("If I catch AIDS, I'ma start raping b*****s").

Guest appearances came in packs in two songs "8 Iz Enough" (I forgot what televison show that came from) and "Da Graveyard". In many songs there are a lot of no names at the time, with the exception of Lord Finesse on the latter song. But today you can find Killa Cam (Cam'ron) in the song "8 Iz Enough" and a younger Jay-Z in the song "Da Graveyard".

Production wise is cool. I know Diamond D and Showbiz did a few tracks on here. So you have that D.I.T.C flavor throughout this album.

Flaws are not that many. Some people might can't take the intensity of Big L's lyrics. But hey that was his style of rapping. And maybe "I Don't Understand It" and "Fed Up With The BS" might fall under skip material. Other than that this is one album that is a perfect album to your collection (and at the price listed, you CANNOT beat it!). It's sad he was taken away from us and hip hop due to an act of violence (the day after Valentines Day, 1999). There was reports that he was going to sign under Jay-Z's Roc-A-Fella records before he was killed. I keep saying I'm going to buy "The Big Picture" but haven't gotten around to it. I always wondered what would happen if he ever blew up and became a big named artist here in 2006. Unfortunately that question will never be answered.

4 out of 5 stars Soul Legend .......2007-05-29

O.V. was one of the greatest soul singers ever and his Goldwax recording of Thats How Strong My Love Is stands as an all time classic single (in ANY genre) . Its simply magnificent but its not on here ......
Which is why there's only 4 stars .
This compilation is dated and what we need is a new version with more tracks , in chronological order and upgraded sound with decent notes etc.Only then can the legacy of
the great man be truly served in the appropriate manner . Still , like i say , 4 stars for what's on here because it's superb stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Memories.......2007-05-15

I have been an O.V. Wright fan since my high school days back in the '60's.

He performed at my Senior Prom After Party, singing his hit (at the time), "You're Gonna Make Me Cry," and he brought the house down!

All of us girls were pressed up against that stage simply mesmerized by
his moving performance, while all of our prom dates stood around in the back with attitudes!

He made each girl feel as if she were the only one in the room, singing just to her!

Oh, and what a performance! Down on his knees, holding each one of our hands and giving us sugar while not missing a note or a beat!
Needless to say, we were just speechless (except for all the screaming we did)!

If you want a combination of blues, gospel and straight from the heart
singing, all delivered by an unforgettable classic soulful and gifted voice, GET THIS ONE; you won't be disappointed.

My absolute favorite track is "Motherless Child."

This track was recently used in the urban hit movie "ATL", during one of it's most important scenes. Great choice for inclusion on the soundtrack, and an inventive way to introduce young audiences to talented artists, such as O.V. Wright, from another era, whose songs are relevant to our society today.

5 out of 5 stars Who the hell is O.V. Wright and why is he so good?.......2007-04-19

Not many people mention O.V. Wright in the same breath as Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson or Solomon Burke but maybe they should.

I'll grant you that he hasn't got the body of work to rival Marvin, the sweetness of Sam or the falsetto of Smokey and there are times when the lyrics aren't quite up to snuff but that's trifling (not to mention unfair as anyone who sings about a "Monkeydog" is a'ight in my book) but what Wright does have is a stranglehold on the Memphis soul formula and the talent to elevate above the formulaic.

This is highly recommended to anyone who likes the aforementioned people as well as Irma Thomas, James Brown, Percy Sledge, James Carr, Mary Wells, Martha Reeves, Ben E. King, Wilson Pickett and you know...other good music ;)

Caveat Emptor - This CD doesn't contain "Gone For Good" but that's ok - you got 18 other jewels to marvel at.

P.S. - I know this is an O.V. Wright review but I can't help myself - if you like this stuff pick up the last two Solomon Burke CDs. You'll thank me later.

5 out of 5 stars Great under-heralded soul singer.......2006-04-18

OV Wright was a great, great soul singer who should have been as popular as Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, and Al Green, but sadly never was. His material is occasionally weird and incoherent ("Eight men, four women, Lord that's the jury of love"--why?), but that's part of what makes it great. Only the smaller measure, though; the greater part is his wonderful singing and the great Willie Mitchell arrangements backing him up.

5 out of 5 stars O.V. Wright is the definition of Soul.......2004-12-28

I don't know why I've never herd of O.V. until recently. I honestly first picked up on him after looking through the credits of a rap album. The sample listed was O.V.'s "Motherless Child" and based on that song and the reviews here I got the album. I really didn't think `The Soul of...' would be as good as it ended up being. A lot of the music sounds similar to an Al Green song ("I've Been Searching", "I'm Going Home" etc.), but his voice has a much deeper Sam Cooke sound to it. I'll admit that I skip over a couple of the songs on the album, but the good songs are so strong it practically blows you away. I got four other soul albums at the same time as O.V. and this one surprisingly was the best of them.

If you love soul music and you've never even herd of O.V. Wright, I would highly recommend adding this album to your collection. Do Not Hesitate!

Favorite tracks: "When You Took Your Love From Me", "Born All Over", "Ace of Spades", "A Nickel and a Nail", "Drowning on Dry Land", "I've Been Searching", "Motherless Child", "I'm Going Home".

4 out of 5 stars Wondrous gentle music.......2007-01-10

I first saw Isabel on an SBS programme and was amazed at the glorious sounds she was producing. This album is great, relaxing, full of strength and beauty. My only word of caution would be that unless you are in the right mood it can sound a bit repetitive by the time you get to the end of the album. However, I am very glad that I bought it.

4 out of 5 stars hauntingly beautiful.......2006-08-22

Very beautiful melodies and a gorgeous voice - doesn't vary as much though as a whole cd -
can get monotonous after a few songs

5 out of 5 stars The voice of the soul.......2006-01-01

Growing up in the Armenian church, it was impossible not to be powerfully moved by the music. Isabel Bayrakdarian was clearly also moved in the same way. Her singing is so flawless, yet it conveys the depths of her spiritual feelings. It is wonderful that people who have not been exposed to this music will have a chance to experience its power and beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Divinely Joyous.......2005-09-28

Isabel Bayrakdarian is a certified classical music diva today, an excellent Mozartian, Handelian, songs and lieder recitalist and overall a very bright star in the current line-up of young sopranos. And this is how she started her recorded career- with a disc of Armenian liturgical music.
For me it is actually very refreshing to listen to songs in language that I don't understand at all- and a nice break from the usual Latin, German, and my native ones- but at the same time, knowing that they are sung by someone who understands the texts and has a spiritual connection to them is a nice bonus. (And if you want to explore the meaning behind the sounds, the original Armenian texts and translations are included in the CD booklet...) It's also a new musical experience to my ears- I am used to certain melismatic forms of Indian music, and Soeur Marie Keyrouz records of Byzantine chants, yet this music still sounds quite exotic to me. And, at all times, very beautiful.
Like Gregorian chant in its pure form, it would get somewhat monotonous, if it wasn't for Bayrakdarian's heartfelt delivery. I find that the opening song is my favourite and often end up listening to it over and over again, but the whole album is very addictive. Not all the songs have the same joyous rapture feel- some are melancholy tinged, some are both at the same time. You need to listen to this music to appreciate its strange charms. It's beautiful and deeply spiritual, all in one. It is certainly Sacred Joy for my ears.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking!!!.......2002-08-14

This is a stunning recording. Isabel Bayrakdarian's voice is a wonderful clear soprano, rich and warm throughout its range and free of any roughness. Her long familiarity with this repertoire lets her shape each phrase beautifully and, apparently, effortlessly.

The disk derives from a concert that took place in Toronto in September, 2001 commemorating 1700 years of Christianity in Armenia. It consists of 18 pieces of liturgical music. In some Bayrakdarian sings a capella, but in most she is supported by a chamber orchestra. One is aware that this is not western music, but the modes in which it is written are just unusual enough to European ears to be a little exotic while remaining entirely accessible. It's not quite melodic, but not quite chant either. Bayrakdarian's melismas are always sensitive and subtle. The whole effect is soaring, haunting, ethereal, transporting, utterly wonderful.

This is a desert island disk for sure.

5 out of 5 stars there's only one o.v. wright.......2006-07-16

those people who say that his later music recorded on the Hi label is not as good as his earlier output on the Don Robie BACKBEAT label, are wrong. Just listen to the man's voice and interpretation of his material. Besides, how can any music produced by willie Mitchell be bad? Plus, you have backup by the Hi Rhythm Section (the Hodges Brothers plus the great Howard Grimes on drums, with his trademark emphasis on the second and fourth beat), and The Memphis Horns! If you like soul music, then you will love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars What could be better?.......2000-07-11

For those of us obsessed with "Deep Soul" you'll just have to have this because it's all of O.V. Wright's Hi Records cuts. Sure his voice is a little weaker here, and he's clearly under the influence at times, but some of the stuff he belts out are so hauntingly beautiful you'll just have to have it.

Even better, make sure you pick up the 2nd live disc as a companion. Truly wonderful.

For those of you not familiar with O.V. Wright, might I suggest you go pick you pick up some of his older MCA compilations and consider this disc after. Once you hear him, you'll just want more and more.

4 out of 5 stars Heart and Soul on a Budget.......2003-04-23

This is likely one of the best budget titles you could buy. Seven of the ten cuts appear on The Soul of O.V. Wright, so if you have that one, don't buy this (unless you really need those other songs). But for the money, you get O.V.'s four biggest Back Beat hits ("Eight Men, Four Women" "Ace Of Spades" "You're Gonna Make Me Cry" "A Nickel and a Nail"), plus enough of his other songs to give you an idea of the depth of this man's talent. Two other songs, "If It's Only for Tonight" and "Gone For Good" came from album sources. "What More Can I Do" is more rare. It was released on ABC Records after that label purchased Back Beat (along with Duke and Peacock) from its owner, Don Robey. While it was a medium-sized hit, O.V. either chose to leave or was shown the door by ABC, shortly thereafter. But he was soon to sign with Hi Records (whose president, Willie Mitchell was O.V.'s regular producer), where he continued to record until the time of his death in 1980.

Album Description

3 out of 5 stars O.V. Wright with Hi Rhythm.......2001-01-13

Unlike a lot of the live concerts by the great soul singers, say Al Green's "Live in Tokyo" for example, this set features the same band that made the records: Hi Rhythm, from Hi records in Memphis, TN. The sound is good but not great (as is often the case, the horns get buried a little bit). Overall, it is somewhat of a disappointment; the live material doesn't add a lot to the studio versions of these tunes. Still, for fans of O.V. Wright it's a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars O.V. Live! How good does it get?.......2000-07-11

As the companion disc to the Complete O.V. on Hi Records: In the Studio, this is the superior of the two.

While hearing O.V.'s studio cuts are interesting, hearing him live is heavenly. The tracks are a mix of cuts from different concerts recorded in 1979. The only bad thing is it's not long enough. I want more! More!

5 out of 5 stars Best Journeymen album...........2007-07-03

This is the one you want. Still raw, you can feel every line and snare and subliminal interjection. There hasn't been another album in hip hop that compares with this. this one stands on an island its own. Buy this CD. Well worth the 70 minute trip youll embark on. Speaking from their hearts. Thank you Lucky, Thank you Sunspot.

5 out of 5 stars I want to start by saying this isnt for everyone.......2002-11-01

The Mystik Journeymen are members of the world-greatest Living Legends crew. Lucky.I.Am or PSC(i prefer luckyiam) and Sunspot Jonz bring intelligent lyrics with slower beats than the soldout rappers(dont confuse mainstream and soldout because there is a world of difference). These guys are anti-Consumerism and truly love making the music they do and I give so much props to both of them for that. ...

4 out of 5 stars Feeling the MCs, but FREAKIN' SPEED UP THE BEATS!.......2000-01-02

The duo is on point lyrically again as usual, but the production is TOO SLOW. Speed up the drums SOMEWHAT at least... MY GOD. But I can't complain too much, because the messages are ever so clear on this quaint album. PEACE!

3 out of 5 stars A good effort, but not classic Living Legends Material.......1999-07-27

Lets not get carried away. Just because This is their second record (Worldwide Underground being the first) to be widely available, these cats have been around for years, and have recorded material far better. If you really want to see what the Living Legends have to offer, check their web site.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEAT!!!! 1999's finest.......1999-07-21

Yo, the Mystik Journeymen are taking over, worldwide as always. If you haven't caught a show, you haven't experienced live hip-hop. They rock every crowd they step in front of. BLACK SANDS IS THE BEAT, believe it, the best LP of 99 by far! MCing and beat-freaking at TOP NOTCH LEVEL.

5 out of 5 stars Puccini sung by Frenin Milnes and Pavarotti? What could be better?.......2007-05-12

I own several recordings of Tosca, but this is still the reigning favorite, featuring a stellar cast at the height of their collective powers. Don't let the 1978 recording date deter you - the sound quality is excellent, and the performance sumptuous from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars Too Lyric For A True Dramatic Tosca.......2006-02-10

If you're looking for a Tosca the way it should be performed and how it should really sound(fiery, passionate, dramatic) don't look to this recording. This should not be anyone's first Tosca recording or sampler!! I'm by no means a learned music or opera scholar but I am a critic and have listened and watched Tosca long enough to know that this particular recording was at the time purely experimental for Luciano Pavarotti and Mirella Freni. Yes, these two sing wonderfully together as well as individually. They are too many an unbeatable tenor/soprano pair, as their recordings of La Boheme, Manon Lescaut, Madame Butterfly and even L'Amico Fritz attest. While in these operas the music allows them to sing with full lyricism and beauty, the plot for Tosca is too dramatic, intense and forward-moving as an opera and the musical score itself reads this way. There are only a few moments of beautiful melodies: Cavaradossi's first aria "Ricondita Armonia" in which he rhapsodizes about his source of inspiration as an artist, his lover Tosca, the Love Duet between himself and Tosca that follows shortly after and Tosca's own heart-breaking aria "Vissi D'Arte", her prayer to God asking why he has abandoned her in her most needy hour when Scarpia has her in his trap and Cavaradossi is about to be executed. Puccini never fails to deliver some moments of beauty but for the most part, Tosca is an opera that depends on , raw human emotion and even violence, with just a touch of sexual undercurrent. For Sherill Milnes, the role of Scarpia was one that came easy to him. He had sung Scarpia splendidly on record earlier in 1973 for RCA with Leontyne Price and Placido Domingo. He starred as Scarpia in an Italian film with Placido Domingo and soprano Raina Kabaivanska shot on location in Rome in 1975. His baritonal technique is not only handsomely sung, but with the right amount of theatricality as a villainous character.

Freni and Pavarotti had the same wet nurse in Italy and grew up together. Their long careers were remarkable. Both sang through the late 60's, the 70's, 80's and part of the 90's. In the Madame Butterfly recording under Karajan, their voices soar with beauty and emotion in the Love Duet and we get the same, if not more passion, in the Love Duet between Tosca and Mario in Act 1. Beautiful voices, yes. Dramatic enough ? Hardly. Mirella Freni is singing a role that is frankly too hard for her. There is more than one moment in which the role's vocal demands are too much for her to handle. Her Tosca is nonetheless very feminine, sensual and there are a few flashes of fire, but she portrays Tosca as if she were a quiet killer. Too much nobility, too much grace and Tosca is meant to be pushed to the brink of despair as she is completely threatened by Scarpia and even to act by her baser instincts. In this respect, in sheer beauty of tone, she is like Leontyne Price in the 1962 studio recording under Karajan. She makes a beautiful, ravishing Tosca, so if you like this approach, then you will enjoy Mirella Freni as Tosca. And word to the wise, this is her first Tosca recording and is far better than her later 1991 recording with Placido Domingo and
Samuel Ramey. In that recording, she is past her prime and shouting instead of singing. It's the worst Tosca I've ever heard. As for Pavarotti in this recording, he is totally wrong for the part of Cavaradossi. Pavarotti is a voice made for Donizetti, Bellini and some Verdi. It's a voice that cannot step up to the challenge of the demands of the role of Cavaradossi, which calls for a darker more dramatic voice. When you hear the Cavaradossis of Mario Del Monaco, Giuseppe Di Stefano, Franco Corelli and Placido Domingo you are getting the real thing. But Pavarotti is just Pavarotti- a big, blazing, bright voice without any real intelligence or dramatic commitment. He fails miserably here, no matter what any Pavarotti fan might tell you. This is not a role for him. Even Calaf in Puccini's Turandot is a role suited for him, and Pinkerton in Butterfly, but not Mario Cavaradossi. Rescigno and the National Philharmonic are nothing to be excited about as far as musicality. Please, check out these recordings of Tosca for better quality in performance:

4 out of 5 stars Not too shabby..........2004-06-24

Though this recording occasionally sides with sterility, enough passion is present from Freni alone to keep it exciting. In my opinion, Freni is spinto enough to handle the role of Tosca here despite not being a dramatic soprano, and her chest voice and highest notes are more than fulfilling. I imagine a Tosca having as fresh a voice as Price in her prime, and Freni has just that. Pavarotti is not my favorite, but he is tolerable here. The other singers are more than sufficiently idiomatic in their roles.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-01-22

Well...I would have to say that this is good because...EVERY recording that has Freni and Pavarotti on it is good (best soprano and tenor ever), and Sherrill Milnes is incredible as well. Freni, Pavarotti, and Milnes-powerhouse, awesome, better than everyone else! yea!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-01-22

I can't even say....wowo! How does Mirella Freni get that good...and Pavarotti...and Milnes....oh man!
