Product Description
Their 1971 debut boasted a bang-up back-up band of bassist Chris Ethridge, drummer John Barbata and Muscle Shoals keyboardist Barry Beckett, and made the charts, with the song Can You See Him getting the most airplay. If you love guitar, these guys are really good!

5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Follow-up.......2007-03-06

Their second album serves up more stellar performances- the rich jangling guitars and soaring harmonies found on their debut. I couldn't agree more with the above review who remarks "Finally!"- I've been waiting years for these to be released. Anyone into CSN&Y, Byrds, America etc. shouldn't hesitate to check these guys out. Excellent production work here- hence a fantastic soundstage. Great to see them re-released- the only regret being, versions weren't reproduced for SACD or DVD-Audio.

5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2007-01-22

I saw Batdorf and Rodney several times and was never disappointed with their guitar stylings, the blend of their voices, or the message in their songs. Fans of Brewer & Shipley who don't know John and Mark need to check out their work.

5 out of 5 stars A gem to discover.......2005-12-24

I had Off the Shelf on vinyl in college and it was one of my favorite albums..and it still holds up. I am psyched to finally have it on CD now and I urge you to take a listen. Great harmony and high energy acoustic guitars. The guitar break on Can You See Him is worth the cost of the album!

5 out of 5 stars Best Acoustic Singer-Songwriter-Guitar Player Duo of the 70's.......2005-10-31

"Off The Shelf" or Batdorf and Rodney are virtually unheard of,
by most people.
I was lucky to see them play live (by accident) in the 70's.
The guitar playing, the songwriting the singing the performance,
the unusual style of rhythms etc. were simply suburb.
This CD "Off The Shelf" is wonderful to listen to, up beat positive words and music. A must for acoustic guitar lovers to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Must-Have Sampling From The Master's Career!.......2006-05-08

I already had 12 of the 15 tracks on this CD, mostly from bootleg sources, but was still very excited for the official, remastered release. I wasn't disappointed. The diverse tracks cover a lot of years, and show that Emo kept busy in between soundtrack and ELP work.

The first time I heard "Walter L" I almost drove off the road! Imagine a Jimmy Smith-style organ/band arrangement with outrageous Moog solos--completely off the wall and brilliant. "America" featuring Pat Travers is arguably the most raucous version of the perennial Emerson staple. I always thought the lyrics of "Rio" were in Japanese, but according to the liner notes they're Portuguese and even the natives can't understand them--no matter, it's a catchy tune. "And Then January" and "Asian Pear," both inspired from romances, showcase the emotional depth that Keith has shown more of in recent years. Additional musicians include The Nice, Cozy Powell, Ian Wallace, John Hiseman, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Simon Phillips, Aynsley Dunbar, Barbara Thompson, and Ron Aspery.

Kudos for another fine mastering job by Will Alexander. Another outstanding Emo archive release! Now if he'd only release the orchestrated version of Tarkus and the Second Piano Concerto...

I have been an Emerson fan since 1971. Keith is the Dalai Lama of the Keyboard. This recording is great. My legitimate gripes are the voacal tunes. Yeesh "Straight between the eyes" and "Don't be Cruel" are pretty hideous. Barring those the rest are excellent. Particularly "And then January", "Asian Pear" and "Motor Bikin`". I would really, really love to recommend this. I mean the jury is still out. If you're a dyed-in-the-wool fan, go ahead. Otherwise, I dunno. It certainly has its moments. I confess to loving "Up the elephant & round the castle". What the heck, go buy it.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Another Compilation of Far Out Songs!.......2007-02-16

This is a compilation of some of Far Out Record's artists and musicians from around 2002. It's much in the same mold as Far Out 100, release a year or so ago, in which the label put together a few exclusives and deleted tracks & vinyl only songs onto a disc at a discounted price. It's a pretty good idea IMO and a sure money maker for the late fans of the Far Out label.

This one stacks up well with the others and really does it's job. You've got a pretty cool versoin of "Smile" by Nature's plan, a song not often featured. It's got chirpy keys and a nice beat to it although the remix is my preference... that version's got an amazing broken beat intro. Another jamming cut is Azymuth's "Carambola" remixed by Mark Pritchard (Troubleman). Sweet beat! Da Lata's "Ponteio" also featured and at the time, it was a song that wasn't as well distributed but heaven only knows that's not the case now... it's everywhere. You also got a preview of Democustico here with "Brazil", although to me that's one of their weaker tracks - in their debut album released just last year there are loads better. And finally Big Bang's song is also a pretty surprisingly good song.

I liked this when I got it, and it was at a pretty low price then of around 8-9 bucks, which is where Far Out tends to price their pure samplers (feature series run you a lot more). IT had some misses on it... I've never been a big fan of Roni Size's cuts and this didn't sway me either when they went after an Azymuth song. And some of the cuts show you why they were discontinued. But all in all there are some good strong songs here too so it's worth a listen. Make sure to check out a few other Far Out comps too... they usually feature Brazilian & broken beats so you can't go wrong with them if that's what you're into.
