5 out of 5 stars My Intro To This Group.......2007-06-14

Very impressive. Dynamic band with a high energy sound. I immediately purchased another cd title by them.

3 out of 5 stars Music to watch your cat drink Ginger Ale by.......2007-01-14

Now, I don't want anyone to take this wrong - because I own 4 CD's by these guys;Erpland, Afterswish, Jurassic Shift, and Spirals in Hyperspace, so I must like something about them - however, I doubt if I can name one of their songs, or even recognize which CD I'm listening to. It's nice stuff to listen to... if you don't listen to it. Perfect background music for housecleaning or exercising. The problem with their prolific output seems to be that it all sounds like those "demo" tunes hard-wired into digital synthesizers since the 80's. I should know, I have 9 synths... and I bet most people couldn't tell the difference between the demo on my Waldorf and anything on this album (I'm thinking maybe their earlier stuff might be exempt due to poorer production values).

They would have impressed me (and many others) more if they could have developed their little "sonic salads" into REAL songs and gotten a GOOD female singer the likes of Annie Haslam, Sandy Denny, or Jacqui McShee... not even that good really... well, just about anybody! I cannot see how anyone could go to a concert by them and maintain their attention span without some "chemical" fortification to pull them through it... and I suppose that's the point. But they've confined themselves to the realm of "so innocuous as to be ignored". The category of "Music to watch your cat drink Ginger Ale by" adequately filled by and forever licensed to Ozric Tentacles.

3 out of 5 stars Worthwhile though undercooked journey.......2006-10-04

3 1/2

Impressive modern progressive-light offering still often falls into it's own trappings with elongated, overdone yet underutilized structure amidst this space odyssey. Embellishing much of the repeated jamming with effective electronic touches, Erpland takes us down a fun, sometimes challenging, sometimes boring route painting the instrumental trip. Musicians will likely be captivated by some of the inherent talent, captured best in potent bursts of deep space electrojams, before succumbing to the eventual feeling of the more prevalent detached, methodical pace.

5 out of 5 stars standout cd.......2005-12-09

Compared to some of their other `one dimensional' albums, Erpland really shows what this band is capable of doing, compositionally and creativally speaking. A knock this band has is that every song sounds the same...I wouldnt go that far, but they tend to focus on a jam over one or two chords at times.

Erpland has some interesting twists, chord changes, different instruments and various ethnic influences and sounds which show their mastery over the array of analog and digital synths they use. You just dont get a blazing reverbed guitar solo with the bubble machines in the background, but a more balnced, and melody oriented approach.

Very good album, Id agree it is the `classic' in their catalog.

5 out of 5 stars Ozric Tentacles - 'Erpland' (Original Masters).......2006-11-13

Good, outstanding and solid 1990 classic release from these neo-progressive space rockers. Known to us common folks as Ozric Tentacles. I've heard several long time Ozric fan(s) mention that 'Erpland' is one of the best pieces of work they've ever put out. I sort of tend to agree with that. Tunes here that's almost sure to pull your senses RIGHT in are the awesome opener "Eternal Wheel"(believe they still play this song on tour, even to this day), "Sunscape", title track "Erpland" and "Valley Of A Thousand Thoughts". I realize there are SO many Ozric CD titles to choose from. If you happen to be a new/er fan, 'Erpland' would be a nice place to start, then work your way from there. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the First Line-Up.......2003-03-01

Ozric T are excellect musicians. This record over all has the best material that the original line up has written. To be honest, the band is CLEARLY influenced by Daevid Allen's Gong- in particular- the albums You and Angel's Egg. But these guys took it that step further, which only a fresh band could do. The guitarist and both keyboardist can REALLY play. They create ambient psychodelic moods and grooves that are simply fantastic, if you are into it. You can feel the synergy of the band at this time in their careers. It all comes together here, on Erpland, for the inception of the band. Just a note: The record was recorded in 1987. Enough said. Ingenious spin!

    5 out of 5 stars OT's masterpiece.......2003-02-11

I second what reviewer spiral mind says.
This album is OT's masterpiece, head and
shoulders above their others. Don't miss
it if you like great progressive rock.

5 out of 5 stars A vision of our blue world and all the colors of sunlight.........2002-07-12

It always seems to be an exercise in frustration trying to comment on an Ozric album. Not because there's little to say, you understand, but because their music is very difficult for my meager writing skill to describe. It's earthy and ethnic, it's psychedelic techno, it's ambient, it's groove-based and melodic at the same time, it's spacey and otherworldly.. it's just plain weird. The group consists of the elements of a conventional rock band but take everything into a bizarre trippy outer-space groove that any plain rock band wouldn't dream of, augmented along the way by a variety of flutes, reeds and whistles. The percussion is rooted by simple drums and enhanced with an exotic array of congas, tablas and I don't even know what else. Synths are used liberally, but they create a background atmosphere rather than a chief melody. There are no lyrics present (or needed) apart from an occasional stray word floating in the ether. The music is enough to make pictures in the air all by itself; I imagine tropical beaches, hidden jungle valleys, birds soaring across sunlit mountains, and the vastness of deep space.

The group interaction over the course of this disc belies the fact that it was their second official release; that's because they'd already been together for five years and put out six self-financed releases before their 'debut' Pungent Effulgent came into being. As Ozric fare goes this is the finest I've heard.. the main other recommendation I could make is the more space-alien-dominated Hidden Step, but that's a different review. Practically all their early albums have the same vibe, group chemistry and mystical quality, but for some reason Erpland stands a head above the others. I can't describe why any more easily than I could describe their sound to begin with. I just know that this is the OT album I've never gotten tired of playing, the one I reach for most often when I want a happy, enchanting listening experience. It seems I've run out of adjectives. I don't know how coherent these couple paragraphs must seem; the best way to understand what I mean is to hear it for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Mindblowing enhancement for transcendental rasa seekers.......2000-10-07

It's all maya, of course, but who can resist it? Anyway, try listening to the Ozrics while reading transcendental literatures like Krishna Dharma's Mahabharata or Ramayana. It enhances the experience manyfold. The mind soars off into spiritual regions while the heart becomes wrapped in mellow rasa. Other contemporary aids to meditation, which have mushroomed in popularity of late, are not even needed for this experience. Just let the words and music take you away to worlds you can hardly even imagine. See you there.
