Days of Speed, recorded live and acoustic at various shows during Paul Weller's 2001 global tour, will do little to further his standing among critics, who have a blind spot when it comes to Paul Weller. How is it, they want to know, that the man responsible for one of the most inspirational commercial punk-era bands (the Jam) and the cosmopolitan verve of the early 1980s nouveau jazz-pop Style Council is so seemingly content to spend his twilight years turning himself into a third-rate Eric Clapton?

Clearly, he's not lacking in talent (or fervent support, as the applause on this album proves). Yet he insists on singing in a wooden fashion--you could kindly compare him to Steve Winwood, if Weller weren't so clearly his own man--and writing songs that continue to ignore the outside world. Contrast the older songs here--a lackluster "That's Entertainment," a desultory "Headstart for Happiness" from the Council's excellent 1984 album, Café Bleu, "Town Called Malice" divorced of its driving Motown beat (surely its main part)--with the newer version of Weller, a "mature" Weller, a Weller that clearly thinks the concerns of the world are no longer his.

"You Do Something to Me" (from 1995's successful Stanley Road) still shimmers above the hedgerow, and "Amongst Butterflies" (from 1992's Paul Weller) has a certain naïve charm, but on the whole, this is heavy going indeed. One indistinguishable love song follows another. The fall and fall of Weller certainly adds fuel to the fire of those who believe rock & roll to be a youth music, but really it comes down to one simple test for old Jam fans: which song did you prefer, "Going Underground" or "That's Entertainment"? --Everett True

5 out of 5 stars The $5.98 EP.......2007-03-12

This is a great collection of cover tunes from the cover Kings. Metallica has a knack for picking just the right songs to cover and doing them well. This was released between the death of Cliff Burton and the recording of ...And Justice For All. I have Jason Newstead's autograph on the original cassette cover. They called it "The $5.98 EP", so stores couldn't hike the price up on the consumer. I would like to say, "Get this cd!!", but the fact is, you would be better off buying "Garage Inc.", which includes all these tracks and about 20 more on a 2 cd set.

5 out of 5 stars short and sweet- lars review.......2006-06-02

I bought this album in 86? I was around ten years old. This album was my first introduction to Metallica. As soon as "Helpless" kicks in- with lars' aggressive tom tom fills- i was hooked! and that's only 8 bars! Incidentially, it is because of listening to THIS album that I started to play the drums. I would like to add that Lars drumming here is probably his finest compared to the other metallica albums that came after- with the exception of "and justice for all.." so if u wanna rock with intensity! tuck your earpieces in your ear holes and crank it Up!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome! Add this to your record collection!.......2005-11-21

I got this on record a few years ago before this came out on the Garage Inc CD with all the B Sides. Nonetheless, I love this album, the album cover -- they all look really happy and on the back you see the picture negatives of them in and out of truck with Lars's father. Hearing these songs alone is a treat on record... You really feel the energy and the good vibes the band members had back then.

All the way through, it it classic Metallica doing some great covers, which you can totally understand the similarities of the songs they copy and how they were influenced.

Often when bands take it easy, do covers and fool around it can sound better! Last Caress (Originally by Danig) is better than the one on here, but this is all done just for kicks.

Oddly enough, it's one of my favorite "albums," and too add, I think it's better than the original Garage Days, because It has more songs. I think the songs chosen here are phenomenal and show a remarkable recovery since Cliff died the year before in a bus accident in Sweden. I

There's even a "nutty bow" to Iron Maiden's "Run to the Hills" on here as well. It is as if Iron Maiden, returned the greeting by putting on their "Be Quick or be Dead" single "...Metallica in the rear view mirror" in the song they covered "Space Station No. 5."

If you like collecting records, this is the one to have! Metallica, the raw Metallica!

PS: I am pleased to learn that you can records of Amazon too -- Sweet! They should make it more well-known!

5 out of 5 stars Good Old Days, Gone but not Forgotten.......2005-09-26

I didn't even know of this CD until i started looking around Amazon.com. A must have for any seious Metallica collector. Sounds like early Metallica. (which we all adore).Buy it and you will not be disapointed.

3 out of 5 stars Metallica: The $5.98 EP-Garage Days Revisited (1987).......2005-07-05

Shortly after Cliff had died, Metallica held auditions for a new bass player. This entered JASON NEWSTED. Jason became the band's new bass player. The new and improved Metallica lineup now featured:

JAMES HETFIELD (Lead Vocals & Rhythm Guitars)
KIRK HAMMETT (Lead Guitars)
JASON NEWSTED (Bass Guitars)
LARS ULRICH (Drums)

In 1987, Metallica released their fourth album entitled, THE $5.98 EP-GARAGE DAYS REVISITED. This album is a five-track EP featuring cover songs that were originally recorded by bands that were popular back in the 70s & 80s. This EP is not bad. I would have given it four stars, but I gave it three since it was cover songs.

HELPLESS
Not bad.

THE SMALL HOURS
I never heard the original, but they do this song great.

THE WAIT
Incredible.

CRASH COURSE IN BRAIN SURGERY
Not bad.

MEDLEY: LAST CARESS/GREEN HELL
Not bad.

I do not have this album, since nobody seems to have it in stock. I'm trying to see if I can buy a used copy from Amazon.com. I did hear this album before, since my older brother had a copy of this album on cassette when it first came out. I'll only be buying it just to get all of Metallica's albums. I already have most of their albums and I'm only missing this one and SOME KIND OF MONSTER. So, if you would like to buy all of Metallica's albums, then buy this one to help complete your Metallica catalog.

5 out of 5 stars Does Something To Me.......2006-09-29

Tracks 1-9 (minus English Rose, which, though better than the original, still has an incongruous, hermetic Victorian feel) are an ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE, a clinic of live solo acoustic guitar. This album showcases a mature artist at the pinnacle of his craft. The show begins as a mildly melancholy/romantic introspective confessional. This aspect of Weller's personality is not surprising. We've known it in him all along, even from The Jam days and heartbreaking songs like "Life From a Window." Hiding first behind punk attitude, then behind Euro/sophisticate in the Style Council, Weller finally abandons all pretense here as a solo act. This is the man entire, his voice pulsing with the electric immediacy of a raw nerve. Admittedly, Weller represents a style of songwriting which is charmingly passe; he could never write, say, a Dave Matthews song. If popular music had not taken a left turn somewhere a few miles back, it would sound a lot like Paul Weller. How he continues to wring fresh material out of the same Motown, R&B, funk, etc. influences is a credit to his well-secreted work ethic. Tellingly, the liner notes of his Studio 150 album charge modern song writers as being "just plain lazy. That's the truth."
As an opener, "Brand New Start" draws you in in a way that no cliched "big opening number" could. You can picture an ocean of lighters swaying in the darkness for "Loved." Weller sings with absolute assurance. Far from being "wooden" (as the pretentious review above charges), Weller is too cool for school. Not a single unnecessary note is to be found. "Clues" benefits from not having the "rocking flute solo," or the overwrought Ginger Baker tom tom fills of the studio version. It has much more mystery than the original. Who would have thought that "Out of the Sinking" could sound so good with half the chords of the original? Yet it does. It's muscular and cocky, a song with shoulders and a fist. As a performer myself I can tell you that people love this version without ever having heard it before.
"Above the Clouds" sounds like a Marvin Gaye song. The audience sing-along is a nice touch. This version of "You Do Something To Me" breaks my heart at the dissonant chord over the line "hanging on the wire." "Amongst Butterflies" actually sounds like children chasing funky butterflies in the summer. The funk is turned up on "Science"; how do you write a funk song about science? Yet the Modfather pulls it off.
"That's Entertainment" is a bitter but delicious little song, an indictment of stupidity, complacency and modern suburbia. "Wild Wood" is dead wood in my opinion, an overrated clunker. But if you want feel the pure joy of life and love captured in one three-minute masterpiece, it's "Headstart for Happiness." This may be the greatest song he has ever written. "Town Called Malice" rounds out the album.
It is an f___ing crime that this man is not more famous in America. It's no hyperbole for me to say that one of my great privileges in life is to be able to listen to this man's music. He is a rare example of talent that has not dried up. Compare him with Bob Dylan, who should have bowed out in 1974. You get the feeling that Weller's restless soul is moving on a trajectory well past the scope of a normal life. He won't live to see his best work. Days of Speed, indeed--he's moving fast toward something that's always just out of reach: commercial success in America, the bottom of the creative well--whatever it is, Godspeed Paul Weller. Oh, and the cover is very cool.

5 out of 5 stars Less is More!.......2006-04-14

I listen to tons of music from a lot of different genres, but this cd stands out as one of the best! In this era where so many acts rely on an entourage of dancers, costume changes, lighting/special effects, drum machines, attitude, sampling, overdubs, videos, stylists, etc., this cd says let's forget all about that and see how much of an artistic statement one guy can make onstage with a guitar, his voice and songs that he wrote himself. Paul Weller succeeds here with a brilliant blend of new & old material and demonstrates what it means to live up to the challenge of being "unplugged." I suspect that the number of performers capable of pulling this off is much less than some people might think. Paul Weller- if you're reading this, try this approach again! A live acoustic set of new material along with some classics of your own or other people's would be wonderful!

4 out of 5 stars EVERETT"S NOT TRUE.......2004-05-06

THE ABOVE EDITORIAL REVIEW BY EVERETT TRUE ( A BRIT TRANSPLANT WHO WROTE FOR LOCAL MAG THE STRANGER HERE IN SEATTLE) IS SLANTED TOWARDS A YEARNING FOR THE GOOD OL JAM DAYS(AND THEY WERE GOOD) BUT FOR THOSE LIVING IN THE FUTURE THIS ACOUSTIC MORE MATURE WELLER IS JUST FINE WITH US. CHANGE IS WELLERS STRENGTH WHETHER IT WAS SPEEDFUELLED PUNK TO HORN INFUSED SOUL TO STINTS WITH HOUSE MUSIC(A FOR EFFORT-DESPITE FAILING) ONTO HIS ACOUSTIC HEAVY SOLO CAREER. I SAW THIS SHOW IN LA AND WAS IMPRESSED AT THE STRIPPED DOWN RAWNESS OF BOTH HIS VOICE AND PLAYING AND IT WAS NICE TO HEAR THE SIMPLE STRUCTURE AND PURITY OF THE ORIGINAL COMPOSITIONS- IN FACT IT WAS BETTER THAN HIS FULL BAND PERFORMANCES WHICH ARE ALWAYS GOOD BECAUSE IT WAS WELLER WITHOUT ALL THE FUSS. THE lOVED IS STELLAR-AS ARE SONGS LIKE YOU DO SOMETHING TO ME WHICH I NEVER REALLY LIKED IN STUDIO FORM BUT HERE THEYRE GREAT. THE WHOLE ALBUM MAKES FOR GOOD LISTENING AND EVERY ONE IVE PLAYED IT FOR WHO HADNT HEARD OF WELLER(AND THERE ARE MANY HERE IN THE STATES) ALL WENT OUT AND BOUGHT THIS AND OTHER ALBUMS FROM THROUGHOUT HIS CAREER. MOST LIVE ACOUSTIC OR LIVE ALBUMS IN GENERAL ARE NOT WORTH HAVING BUT THIS MAKES FOR A EVENING OF GREAT TUNES- AND THATS THE KEY HERE-ALL THE SONGS ARE SOLID AND WELLER IS A CLASS ABOVE MANY OF THE FLY BY NIGHT BANDS THAT TRUE HAS PRAISED IN THE PAST. SURE ITS HARD TO HEAR TOWN CALLED MALICE WITHOUT THE GREAT HORNS AND MOTOWN BEAT BUT IVE HEARD THAT A MILLION TIMES BEFORE. ITS A FRESH START TO HEAR IT IN THIS FORMAT-ALL IN ALL WELLERS ON A ROLL STARTING WITH HELIOCENTRIC TO DAYS OF SPEED AND ONTO TO ILLUMINATION. HE LOST ME IN THE MID 90S BUT ONCE AGAIN IS WINNING ME BACK WITH ALBUMS LIKE THIS.

4 out of 5 stars Just fine........2003-10-31

I don't find this "heavy going" at all! On the contrary, "English Rose" sounds far more tender than it did when Paul Weller sang it in his Jam days. And songs such as "Amongst Butterflies," "Out Of The Sinking," and "Headstart for Happiness" get a lift from the one-one-one contact Weller has with the audiences while he's playing. These versions are at least as good as the studio versions, in some cases better. Even if you're more a fan of his studio albums, this album gives proof positive that Paul Weller, stripped down to one guitar and voice, can deliver the goods. Which he does in spades.

5 out of 5 stars How can anyone say "wooden voice?".......2003-10-29

How dare you! This man is THE man at the moment with one of the best voices in popular music. This album proves it. And although I want to continue to rant about Weller I do realize it's somewhat a silly thing to do. I mean, c'mon, how can you argue when Pink and 50 cent top the charts and Weller gets practically no mention or airplay.

5 out of 5 stars NOT A BEST-OF.......2005-09-17

This is not a best-of, it's more of a collection, I'll explain the first disc, it's a bunch of tracks from Demonic and The Gathering, which are nothing short of awesome albums, what you get from Demonic are "Demonic Refusal" "The Burning Times" "Ten Thousand Thrones" "John Doe" "Hatred's Arise" "Together as One" which are killer tracks from Demonic, now the ones from The Gathering "D.N.R [Do Not Resuscitate" "Down for Life" "Riding The Snake" "3 Days in Darkness" "Legions of the Dead" and "Fall of Sipledome" which once again, are all killer tracks, Demonic was released in 1997, The Gathering was released in 1999.

The second disc is actually the album "First Strike Still Deadly" which is a bunch of old songs from The Legacy and The New Order, RE-RECORDED, not RE-Mixed, it's really nice to hear these old tracks with good production, although the originals went well with the production, it still sounds nice to have them done in todays sound production, Chuck Billys vocals are nothing short of killer, these tracks are ever heavier with the re-recording than the originals, also on the track "Alone in the Dark" Steve "Zetro" Souza does some vocals, also "Reign of Terror" which was recorded when Testament were known as "The Legacy" in which Souza was the original vocalist, and Souza has an awesome voice, I don't see why some people don't like his vocals, he's got an original way of doing vocals, influenced heavily by Bon Scott and Brian Johnson (AC/DC), and of course Chuck Billy is a killer vocalist, if you're a fan of old Testament, and want to hear the old songs with better production, get this, you won't be dissapointed.

4 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2004-12-08

I ran out and bought this because I thought it was a live album, but as it turned out, it was yet another 'best of.' However, I was very happy with the purchase anyways. The first disc is the best tracks off 'The Gathering' and 'Demonic,' their hardest stuff to date, and the second disc is the 'First Strike Still Deadly' album in it's entirety, making it's original release obsolete. The ONLY bad thing about this collection is that there isn't a single song off the 'Low' album, but the fact that they didn't include any of their cheesy old stuff kinda makes up for it.

4 out of 5 stars A Great salute to a Legendary band.......2004-12-04

There are many words to describe Testament, but their evolution from their debut album "The Legacy" right up to the last studio album "The Gathering" makes it impossible to sum up what they are about. If you don't know a lot about the band, this album goes a long way to doing just that.

Testament were a pioneering thrash metal band who came about around the same time as the likes of Slayer, Metallica and Anthrax, but didn't share the same commercial attention. This did not, however, take anything away from their status as an incredible thrash band. Despite this, the band steadily became heavier throughout their career, having darker and heavier qualities towards the latter albums.
"Days Of Darkness" presents the best of both Testament eras; the first disk is comprised completely of songs from the 1997 album "Demonic" and the follow-up album in 1999, "The Gathering", showcasing the heavier side of Testament. It includes the death-metal songs such as Demonic Refusal and Legions Of The Dead, among others. It also has Down For Life, which I rate as one of the greatest modern metal songs written. This disk gives a perfect presentation of how heavy Testament can be.

Disk II, however, highlights some of the classics by Testament. The interesting thing about this cd is (and for all Testament fans who have "First Strike Is Still Deadly", take note) it IS in fact "First Strike Is Still Deadly"!! That's right, the second disk is the band's 2001 re-recording of old songs. It includes such classics as Burnt Offerings and The Haunting, but somewhat heavier and darker with better production.
That is why I haven't given it the full 5 stars; I think a Testament collection such as this should have the classics in their original form, to introduce new fans and to highlight the contrast between the early albums and the latter albums.

This cd is not a greatest hits; it is a celebration of a reunion. The writer of the editorial notes remarks on how the band split up with frustrations of commercial failures and "record industry bullsh*t." Not to mention lead man Chuck Billy's battle with throat cancer. This double-disk collection IS Testament.

Play 'em loud.

This cd is one of the best metallica live cds. I never knew that their was a bass player before cliff. the mechanix song sounds pretty cool.

3 out of 5 stars Live?.......2006-09-23

First of all, let me say that I love Metallica. Let me get that straight before I condemn this terrible dubbed "live" set. What we have here is actually the famed 'No Life 'Till Leather' demo, made to sound live using stock crowd noise, and some of Hetfield's concert remarks from the 'Cliff 'Em All' collection. The songs are so poorly dubbed that this is not even an acceptable way to attain the Leather demos.

However, I did give the disc 3 stars. This is because I feel like any legal and authentic bootleg cd by the Horsemen of the Apokalypse is worth the money. And I feel like this odd cd will eventually be re-salable for more than its original asking price.

Die-hard fans should get this one, but others will probably feel ripped-off.

5 out of 5 stars If you want an introduction to P. Weller, pick this one 1st.......2002-10-02

This cd covers PW's whole career up until his 5th release,
"Heliocentric". The Jam's "That's Entertainment" is amazinga nd
the classic "English Rose" will give you the warm fuzzy feelings
that only PW can do. Also, two classic Style Council songs come in the form of "Headstart for Happiness" and "Down in the Seine".
But my favorite tracks are the opening, "Brand New Start" that you can only find on his Best of called Modern Classics, track two "the Loved", "Clues" is the most romantic song ever and "Wildwood" is incredible! His
honesty and integrity is so real it's inspiring, his voice and
acoustic guitar is mesmerizing...

5 out of 5 stars Daily Listen........2002-08-29

Buy this record. You deserve it. Paul deserves it. Out of my collection of 1,000+ CD's, this one is always on top. My personal daily listen. Those who have given this work a lower rating than I have must not have listened carefully enough nor long enough. Paul, his guitar, this recording. Now it's your turn.

4 out of 5 stars Bare Bones Weller.......2002-07-10

This is Paul Weller stripped back bare. Ever since Sound Affects I imagined Paul Weller on his own, on stage with a guitar and this is it and it's good. The opening track "Brand New Start" is superb, if you're a Weller fan it's sure to send shivers up your spine. Other gems include, Above the Clouds, Wild Wood and the crowd goes wild when Paul rips into a sped up acoustic version of Thats Entertainment. The whole album flows together with a relaxed reminiscent and nostalgic flavour.

If you close your eyes and imagine hard enough you can almost see Weller sitting on a stool strumming away on his Gibson J45 in your local. Some have thought Weller quite aloof with his fans, this album sets the record straight, there is that natural intimate feeling that only seem to get with an acoustic concert.

This album will have limited appeal to new Weller fans more to die-hards, however I must say strict Jam fans will be disappointed (aren't they always!). It gets 4 stars only because personally I think Paul comes across better with either a big band sound behind him or a higher fidelity production.

However, I'm eargerly awaiting Paul to turn up at my local with his Gibson and his stool. He'd could have as many Stellas as he wanted.

2 out of 5 stars "Awful".......2002-04-10

How could someone like Paul Weller, who was probably the coolest man in town when he was with The Jam in the 70's, turn into an acoustic-loving hippie with his latest live album Days Of Speed? Sounding more like an MTV Unplugged session than a proper live recording, Days of Speed combines both old and new tunes from Weller to create an acoustic mix songs, including Weller ruining his own classics like "Headstart for Happiness", "That's Entertainment" and, of course the landmark "Town Called Malice". Opening track "Brand New Start" is so awful we're just going to tell you to hit the "Skip" button if you buy this album. From there, Weller goes on to practically destroy "English Rose" from the classic Jam album All Mod Cons, slowing the punk masterpiece down to a snails pace and missing numerous guitar notes at the same time. "There's No Drinking After You're Dead" from his 2000 album Heliocentric is just as awful, making him sound like an old granddad trying to lecture a child. And then there's probably the most excruciatingly terrible crime of all time: "Town Called Malice", in which Weller devastates the masterful tune and doesn't even bother to sing half the tune, making it in our opinion the worst cover of all time (we know it's not really a cover, but we don't consider it Weller's song anymore after this awful performance). In our opinion, it seems that Weller has headed the way of Eric Clapton (formerly of Cream), Lou Reed (Velvet Underground) and Paul McCartney (some band called The Beatles) in that it's not really his fault, but his senile old mind turning mushy and making him forget how great his songs were. But at least we still have the old Jam records to remember him by.

3 out of 5 stars better than nothing..........2002-01-25

First of all, I'm a complete, unabashed Weller fan, and always have been, since All Mod Cons. I thought the Style Council was often brillant, I think his first solo album was his best, and that the others have been generally good, with flashes of brillance, but haven't touched the standard he set with the first, not even the home market fave WildWood.

I think Weller unplugged is good, because it's Weller in a new light. I think his passion comes thru in an okay, but not great, way; I think his voice seems above average, and I think his acoustic accompaniment is interesting, but not great. My fave tune is #9, science, on which--ironically--he's playing an electric. Actually, I think this recording (of science) is exceptional, because it's so unique (i.e., solo electric accompaniment) and has a precious raw quality to it.

In sum: what a brillant career. His capacity to re-invent himself may be unparalleled amongst pop musicians. It would be great if he did it again and came back with yet another whole new Weller. But, whatever you do Paul, just give us more--please.

      Album Description

Days Of Speed, recorded live and acoustic at various shows during Paul Weller's 2001 global tour. In true and earnest Weller fashion he has constantly and steadfastly refused to revisit his considerable catalogue of classics during his live shows, instead sticking to output from whatever his current incarnation was. The king of dad rock has finally come of age with two simultaneous firsts, live acoustic shows and a newfound willingness to draw from his entire cannon. What we get then on Days of Speed is The Jam, The Style Council and Weller's later solo material delivered stripped down, raw and acoustic, often offering up new insights, as he presents his work in the classic singer-songwriter medium Sony. * US version is long out-of-print.
