5 out of 5 stars Kings of Emotion.......2004-11-24

On The Skill album, Sherbs created the perfect combination of smoking keyboards, infectious guitar licks and passionate vocals. I agree that this CD has a somewhat outdated sound, but the album was so good that the 24 years that have passed since its release seem to melt away while listening.
For this reviewer, Sherbs, (for all their obscurity in the US), were the kings of emotion. No other band matched their ability to relate through music that ineffable longing, that simultaneous agony and rapture one feels during a desperate period of unrequited love (or lust).

Two particular songs on he Skill come to mind: "Love You To Death" and "Cindy Is Waiting." I get goose bumps just typing these titles. The girl(s) who inspired these songs must have been skull-crushingly HOT!!!

4 out of 5 stars The Sherbs...80's goodtime music.......2004-09-29

Before I had heard this album, my only exposure to this 80's Australian supergroup was "No Turning Back", a song that continues to haunt me to this day, with it's percussive Hammond/Leslie solo. Indeed, the rest of this album sounds like this song, but more pop and less rock than NTB. Tons of hot vocal, burning guitar, and 80's synth pads all set over driving rhythms...if you heard it with no backround info, you'd peg it immediately as a 80's band (a HOT 80's band). It's all fun music of this period, if only there were more of that burnin' Hammond organ !!

3 out of 5 stars No Turning Back.......2004-03-29

I bought this album for one song, that being "No Turning Back", which was a song that got a fair amount of airplay around here. I spent several years with the song bouncing around in my head, but I couldn't remember the name of the band. When I found out that it was the Sherbs, I went out and found a copy of both US albums. I can't say the rest of the album did much for me except for "I Have The Skill", but I still bought the cd when it was issued for "No Turning Back" alone. A great, GREAT song. An iffy record.

3 out of 5 stars Good, not Great.......2004-02-26

I had this album back in the early 80's, buying it based on the single "No Turning Back". At the time I loved the song, but hearing it again recently I find it has not aged very well. In fact, the entire album sounds dated, and lyrics such as "There'll be no turning back, unless you change your mind" leave much to be desired.

If you had this back in the day and are looking to reminisce, this could be a fun listen. If you never heard this, you're likely to wonder why it's gotten such high praise from reviewers (unless your musical tastes remain tied to early 80's pop rock).

5 out of 5 stars Criminally Underrated! Great band!.......2004-01-08

This was one of my favorite LP's back in the day, and now the CD release has fans ecstatic. When I lived in NYC, FM radio used to play 'No Turning Back', which is a great song. However, the rest of this release is stellar as well. Gripping vocals and great musicianship pepper the whole CD! Supergroup, world class music from one of Australia's best rock bands ever.

    Album Description

Despite the fact that the purity of early 90's hip-hop has been forever lost and the current "all about the money" trend is not about to disappear any time soon, the new school of Canadian hip hop is on the rise. In a country where most artists remain independent, DL Incognito's been able to master his craft, marvelously in the underground. It's been eight years since DL Incognito wrote his first verse, but his passion for music remains the same. His distinctive voice and metaphorically driven rhymes are both witty and powerful. With a plethora of musical influences ranging from Common to Jay-Z, DL's sound is refreshing for any real hip-hop fan. With opening credit for The Roots, Boot Camp, Choclair and many others on his resume, the founder of Nine Planets Hip Hop® is ready to take his music worldwide. With his debut album "A Sample And A Drum Machine", DL Incognito has more then the necessary weapons required to win the battle against the mind-numbing hip hop that plagues our airways. DL creates quality hip-hop music... Period.

Seriously, its an amazing CD. Some ingenious covers that manage to turn a so-so Jam song into pure brilliance. Buffalo Tom's cover of "Going Underground" and Noel Galagher's take on "To Be Someone" are good enough to justify buying this CD just for those two tracks. Though every track is at least enjoyable, if its not brilliant. If you like the Jam then theres no doubt that you'll love this CD.

    1 out of 5 stars 3 out of 4 Oasis wimps agree.......2001-01-04

I disagree with 100% with the previous posts. What a pitiful record.

"Carnation"- Liam Gallagher & Steve Craddock--Paul Weller never wore the Beatles influence on his sleeve. So this is a little like hearing an Elvis impersonator sing the Cramps. Anemic bubblegum from the Oasis frontman.

"Start"-The Beastie Boys & Miho Hatori-By removing the vocals and subtlety, they've created a stylized Gap-ready caricature of an important song. More of an homage to Beck, really.

"That's Entertainment"-Reef-All the elements are in place. The bitterness, the immediacy, the youthful outrage are on board this runaway train. It may not be pretty, but it is beautiful.

"The Gift"-Heavy Stereo--Heavy Stereo fearlessly grabs this song with the sort of desperation that someone is going to steal it out from under them and make a mockery of the Jam.

"Art School"-Silversun--Silversun forego the Urge Overkill 70's consumer sound. They opt instead for dirty garage punk. Vocals aren't quite as adolescent as Blink182.

"English Rose"-Everything But The Girl--Listenable, without being an album buyer.

"Going Underground"-Buffalo Tom--. This awful version slowed down to Cowboy Junkies speed has the singer struggling to breathe. If he doesn't want to sing, he should be hanging around downtown with Marcy Playground.

"The Butterfly Collector"-Garbage--Altering the rhythm of this bitter, pointed tale would seem like a travesty, but it works perfectly. Surprisingly, the most enjoyable dish here.

"This Is The Modern World"-Ben Harper--In an odd turn of events, he has managed to suck every bit of venom out of the vocal delivery. It brings to mind Mel Torme's version of "Superstition."

"Town Called Malice"-Gene--The music is tight and driven, but Martin Rossiters warblings float over it like a detached entity.

"To Be Someone"-Noel Gallagher--Noel has a much more interesting voice than his brother. When he gets out of control, he sounds a bit like Ozzie.

"No One In The World"-Paul Weller--has him sounding like Bowie after an all nighter and 3 packs.

2 out of 5 stars Go Buy Snap.......2000-03-21

Though a heart felt tribute to one of Britain's best and most inspriational bands could be thrilling, and judging by many of the names on this album, you would think it should be, this is rather tedious. Reef does the worst cover of "That's Entertainment," outside of my shower. Everything But the Girl does a xerox of the original "English Rose" without out all the teenage passion and innocence to give it meaning. Ben Harper should stick to his dreary Hendrix pastiches, and Gene's cover of "Town Called Malice" is a travesty. Why I bet they have never even heard a Motown record in their lives! The good stuff includes Buffalo Tom's slowed down romp through "Going Underground", and Noel's acoustic kereoke of "To Be Someone", which gives a true sense to the burnout behind the lyrics. Even Weller sounds tired on the hidden track. File under for completists only.

5 out of 5 stars Fire & Skill: The Songs of The Jam.......2000-02-23

This is a well-conceived tribute to a very deserving band. The eclectic array of artists who cover The Jam's songs (not all of the songs covered here are "the hits") is a nice indicator of how influential The Jam were, despite never really busting wide open in America.

Although the Beastie's cover of "Start!" and Garbage's cover of "Butterfly Collector" are a bit redundant and predictable, there are some wonderful highlights on the album:

Everything But The Girl do themselves proud with "English Rose", an amazing love song that Tracey Thorn nails perfectly, recalling her best "Eden" and "Love Not Money" performances.

Ben Harper's cover of "Modern World" is a pleasingly reckless and sonic awakening at the album's end. I think Weller would be proud of Ben's emotional delivery, both vocally and on that guitar-like thing he plays.

Heavy Stereo's cover of "The Gift" (one of my all time favorite Jam songs) is priceless; equally rock and soul-infused funk.

Gene's cover of "Town Called Malice" is flawless and is the album's high point. Martin Rossiter's vocals are pained, urgent, and sincere. The percussion is also staccato heavy and smooth all at once. Hmmm...I wonder where I've heard that drum sample before! ...

Noel Gallagher's version of "To Be Someone" is both an ironic and poetic choice, and a beautiful and sorrowful acoustic update of Weller's classic rocker. Listen to the lyrics, Liam. Your brother is trying to tell you something!

The hidden Weller track might be the album's most anticipated bummer. It failed to move me at all.

All in all, this album deserves a listen. If you were a fan of The Jam back in the day or if you only recently discovered their music, you will enjoy this album. I suggest buying The Jam's box set or buying the old records and playing them side by side for a nice comparison.

A pleasant surprise among so many mediocre "tribute" albums in the bins these days.

3 out of 5 stars Can I buy just half?.......2000-01-27

How could you let someone ruin "That's Entertainment" the way Reef did? It's like letting Motorhead cover "For No One" by the Beatles. Morrissey's version was a million times better, but unfortunately, it didn't end up here. You can rip the Gallagher's but they did some of the best work on this record, hands down. Borrow this cd from a friend and just tape or burn the good tracks.

5 out of 5 stars all this from an orthodontist!.......2002-08-16

Believe it or not, I found out about this incredible musician through a good friend. Posen is his orthodontist. He's also one of the best guitar players i've ever heard. All of the tracks are filled with complex, amazing riffs played on one, count it, one acoustic guitar. I listened to the CD 3 times over when i first listened to it. A great album

            5 out of 5 stars Too bad.......2006-07-24

What a great band these guys were. They were truly the first band that I fell in love with back in high school. I couldn't help but notice: 1) people confusing this band for another. Unfortunatley, with a name like Garden Variety, there are many bands with the same name. 2) The release dates listed here have to be wrong. I distinctly remember this album coming out second, and the self-titled album on Gern Blandsten coming out 1st. Yet Amazon says this album came out in 1994 and "Garden Variety" came out in 1997. Those dates are wrong, not that it affects the music. The self-titled album came out I believe in 1993, with "Knocking the Skill Level" coming out in 1996. I may be off, but this was def their second album and "Garden Variety" was their first.

Anywho, I've read the comparisons to Superchunk and Jawbreaker and they aren't totally without merit. But this band just seemed to be doing something different, at least at that time. I dunno.....these guys have their own sound. Loud, more yelling as opposed to screaming vocals (but not annoyingly so), yet full of hooky melodies to the well-trained ear. And absolutely some of the best lyrics you'll hear for this style of music. Too bad Radio 4 can't hold a candle to the two GV albums. Buy "Skill Level" first. If you like it, buy the self-titled one. They're both killer IMO. I will never get sick of this album for sure.

5 out of 5 stars wrong they are playing!.......2000-09-25

what a great, great band this was. true they are probably all workers now as i know their old roadie but from what i heard they are all playing and touring in 3 different bands so there you go! . anthony roman is in this new wave sort of band called "radio 4" and anthony rizzo is in this band called "vic thrill" and joe gorelick is in "sugarhigh" with the guy from texas is the reason and the bass or guitarist of shift . sounds cool, anywayz this was one helluva talented band. i was sooooo pissed when these guys called it quits. what the hell happened!

            5 out of 5 stars Not a bad sound.......2000-07-26

But i hear that these guys are all stock brokers and .com employees now. What the hell happened?

5 out of 5 stars an overlooked, but great recording.......1999-12-04

I saw Garden Variety many many moons ago, and I bought "Knocking" at the show. I must say that this was one of the best buys I have ever made. If your looking for some angry, fast, and just plain fun music, check out Garden Variety. I only wish I knew what happened to them!
