Disney's score-heavy soundtrack to the animated "Emperor's New Groove" blends a scoop of splashy and sentimental contemporary tunes with a shovelful of evocative, masterfully crafted compositions. Big-name artists such as Shawn Colvin, Eartha Kitt, and Tom Jones each signed on to sing one of five Sting-penned songs, and Sting himself lends vocals to two tracks (one a duet with Colvin), so the stars are flying high. But fans of these folks may feel they're forever flipping through the wordless orchestral numbers in search of the record's radio-friendly fare. But buyers with more eclectic listening habits are in for a fully engaging if sometimes jumpy sonic ride: Composer John Debney sends pulses racing then mellows them out on tracks teeming with tension ("Beware the Groove"), trepidation ("The Jungle Rescue"), or tenderness ("A New Hope"), and Sting as songwriter doses up splashes of spice by way of the salsified "Perfect World," for which Jones's considerable vocal energies couldn't be better suited, and the prickly "Snuff Out the Lights," which is put across with practiced insouciance by a pucker-faced, still-out-of-this-world-after-all-these-years Kitt, who also plays the movie's devious diva Yzma. "My Funny Friend and Me," Emperor's end-title song and the record's first single, presents a more familiar Sting, and not only because he's its singer. Soundwise, it hardly strays from the artist's huge-selling adult-skewed ballads--his bread and butter in recent years--and as such, it, along with the tender duet "One Day She'll Love Me," grips the potential to send this record racing up the charts. --Tammy La Gorce

4 out of 5 stars Great CD based on original movie premise.......2003-08-19

This CD is great, the Sting songs are, as to be expected, wonderful, especially the ones he sings. It is unfortunate though that this CD has very little in common with the movie as it was released. The movie was originally intended to be a serious drama, based on the "Prince and the Pauper" storyline, but it apparently didn't work, so Disney rushed to change it into a buddy-comedy. I guess the timeline to get the revised movie into theaters didn't allow for them to make significant changes to the soundtrack, because songs that support the original story (Disney was to call the movie "Empire of the Sun") still appear on the soundtrack, even though they have absolutely nothing to do with the movie as released.

All that having been said, this is a truly enjoyable soundtrack/score combination.

4 out of 5 stars Crystal clear scores, excellent songs, but a bit lacking..........2001-05-12

Looking back on my first review, I would like to make some modifications and change my ratings.

While the songs are excellent and the scores are good, the scores lack some of the scenes and cues from the movie itself which I desired to listen to; particulary the opening sequence.

Otherwise, the Sting songs; in fact all of the songs (save the annoying "Lamma Lamma") are great and the score is mostly lively, yet still somewhat lacking.

In short, the New Groove soundtrack is good, but there are definately better pieces with the advent of the Atlantis and Shrek scores, both of which are avaliable at Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars It had to be Disney.......2001-03-15

I have to be honest, I wasn't expecting anything good aboutEmperor's New Groove. Then I got the Cd and realized that Sting wrotegreat songs for the film. I like the sound of all the songs. There ismore, I just got the spanish version of the soundtrack and it is greattoo, the Walk the llama llama song is even better in this CD, it evenhas some extra lyrics that the english version doesn'tinclude. .... The title in spanish is even better "Las Locurasdel Emperador" which means something like "The Emperor'sFrolics"

2 out of 5 stars Emperor needs a new groove.......2000-12-17

All I have to say is - why? Why did Disney feel the need to release a soundtrack to a film with only 2 songs in it? I got it! To cash in on the dupes like me who buy all the soundtracks! I guess it wouldn't be a big deal having songs written for but not included in the film - if the songs were any good. It's clear that Disney was trying to do something very diferent with this film's songs and I applaud the effort as it's desprately needed. But none of these songs come close to catching that Disney Magic. The rest of the CD contains the films score which is good enough to warrant a single listen. The real stand out is Run Llama Run. I'm sure this will become a staple in the Disney parades.

As is becoming a Disney tradition the best song on the CD does not appear in the film. One Day She'll Love Me by Sting and Shawn Colvin is a great song and amazing for the fact that it's completely unilke any Disney song to date. There is sutlety and nuance that is typical of a Sting recording. Truly beautiful. I'm sure it would do very well as a single.

Bottom line: Don't buy this CD unless you're a Disney freak like me. The two songs Run Llama Run and One Day She'll Love Me are great but not for the price. Definitely see the film though. It's a laugh riot!

5 out of 5 stars Groovy!.......2000-12-13

This album truly displays Sting's strengths, and I appreciate the fact that all the songs from the former version of the movie "Kingdom of the Sun" are included. Kingdom of the Sun was the first version of the movie which Sting wrote five songs to. Disney revamped the entire film, scratching the five songs, and making it into a buddy comedy. Its good to see that Disney is proud of Sting's work to include songs not in the final version of the film..

Yeah looks like it's a great get, if you haven't already got every CD by disney. Didn't know the song You'll be In my Hear was a Tarzan track. Must be a spin off to You'll be in My Heart. Its all good.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome collection!.......2003-10-19

I have to say, that with a 5 year old who is obsessed with the movies that these songs go with, it has made the perfect gift! She spends hours listening to this CD while doing more productive activities than sitting in front of a TV watching the movie. The songs are special to her because of the movies, and she actually does her schoolwork well with these fun songs playing. As a music lover and a Disney lover, we both agree at 5 and 30 that this is a hit.

5 out of 5 stars For adult listeners, the Disney songs sung by "real" singers.......2003-07-22

Trivia Challenge: Included in the 16 tracks on "Disney's Superstar Hits" is the only song from a Disney film to hit #1 on the Billboard Pop Charts. See if you can remember which one it is before I give the answer away at the end. No peaking ahead.

The songs collected on "Disney's Superstar Hits" are mostly from the 1990s; there is "Once Upon a Time in New York City" from way back in 1988 from "Oliver and Company" and a few songs from the 21st century. But the only golden oldie is "Put It Together (Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo)," which comes from "Cinderella II" and not the original. The obvious frame of reference would be to see this collection as representing the Disney Renaissance ushered in by the Alan Menken/Howrad Ashman era, which makes it strange that nothing from "Little Mermaid" is included. But the common denominator to this collection is that the songs are not sung by the characters from these films, or, more properly, the people who did the voices for the characters. So instead of Angela Landsbury doing "Beauty and the Beast" it is Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson.

There are several songs from the less than stellar direct to video Disney sequels, such as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame II," "The Lion King II: Return to Pride Rock," "and "Cinderella II," which would be a minor complaint. But Tina Turner sings one of the songs, so it is hard to complain. In fact, the strength of this collection is indeed the superstar singers. Most of them are blasts from the past such as Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins, Sting, Huey Lewis, and Randy Newsman, but there is also new blood such as Christina Aguilera, Sarah McLachlan, Vanessa Williams, and even Jennifer Love Hewitt. Peabo Bryson comes out ahead, with the aforementioned "Beauty and the Beast" and another duet, "A Whole New World" with Regina Belle.

This disc is perfect for grown ups, who like the "real" singers singing the best songs from the Disney movies their kids have been dragging them to for the past decade. Vanessa William's "Colors of the Wind" is my personal favorite, although it is hard not to recall the fantastic opening of "The Lion King" when you hear Elton John do "Circle of Life." On the fun side of the ledger I like Randy Newman and Lyle Lovett working their collective ways through "You've Got a Friend in Me" a bit more than Jimmy Cliff and Lebo M's "Hakuna Matata."

Trivia Answer: "A Whole New World" was #1 on the Billboard Pop Chart for one week starting on March 6, 1993. It is the song that replaced Whitney Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" after 14 weeks on top.

4 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2002-12-29

This is a great CD, but I was kind of disappointed that there weren't more tracks on it. Other than that, you and your kids will be singing along in the car for sure.

Great in the car, as it has a book and both a Audio CD and Cassette. Also, you can use the CD in your computer, which is a real bonus. A major bargain for all you get!

This is a great way to relive the excitement and humor of the movie. The audio (including sound effects) and visuals of this product is great! A fun way to teach kids how to read. I really liked how you don't have to install any software on your computer yet you are able to use it on your system. Plus you can play it on your stereo as well. A great gift for any fan!
