The Assembly of Dust [Enhanced]

The Assembly of Dust [Enhanced]

Editorial Reviews

About the Artist
The Assembly Of Dust is a moniker borrowed from a Middle Ages secret society that sought escape from dreary imperial European society by focusing on music and nature as sources of recreation and spiritualism. Reid Genauer's new project is a modern extension of this philosophy, seeking escape in song and in seize-the-moment energy at concerts that border on revivalism. He is a storyteller first and foremost, with a heavy emphasis on lyrics, melody and song structure, but Genauer's ultimate goal is to explore both ends of the musical spectrum through well-crafted albums and improvisational, explosive live performances. "This album speaks directly through the lyricism and indirectly through the mood and the movement of the songs," he says. "I look to develop songs that will sit concisely on a record and on the radio, but also have enough elasticity and enough body to be extended in a live setting."

The Assembly Of Dust serves as a nimble outfit to support this goal. Bassist John Leccese and drummer Andy Herrick form a flawless, propulsive rhythm section, and on their foundation Genauer and Adam Terrell's intertwining guitar lines and Nate Wilson's atmospheric keyboards carve out soaring anthems like "Burned Down," haunting ballads like "Drawn," and eclectic tunes like "Tavern Walker," which deftly alternates between lively funk-rock verses and double-time country choruses. "It was important for me to have players who have the duality that I was looking to accomplish in the songs," Genauer says. "I want musicians who are musically sophisticated, but still have a hooky and pop element, and that's a hard line to walk. But I think we have accomplished it." Throngs of fans flocking to the groups kinetic performances seem to agree. Less than one year old, the Assembly Of Dust is headlining large clubs (New York City's Irving Plaza, The Paradise in Boston MA and Toad's Place in New Haven among others) and drawing hordes of dedicated fans to their electrifying shows.

this band is allright,I heard them on xm and bought the cd based on other reviews. I do like a solid jam and it does deliver there.

5 out of 5 stars Best AOD Studio Effort Thusfar...No Question........2007-06-19

Though Assembly of Dust is definitely most successful in live settings, Recollection proves that a once stereotyped New England jamband can indeed produce a truly accessible, yet mature record without the incessant and seemlessly directionless noodling thats commonplace amongst other jamband's efforts in the studio.

Therefore, let me establish the fact that Recollection is neither a jam record nor the product of a jamband. It is, on the contrary, an album showcasing Reid Genauer's honest songwriting ability, the band's undeniable musicanship, and perhaps most importantly, how dramatic a change can be in a band's sound from one album to the next. Check out "Whistleclock," "40 Reasons," "Truck Farm," and "Grand Design" and see how authentic their tunes can be. They have an uncanny ability to turn the switch on/off from hard-hitting rock and roll suitable for frat parties to somber ballads about love, hardship, and fate. Nevertheless, the quintet is at its most tight point since their inception in 2002 and with a heavy touring schedule ahead of themsleves this summer, hitting every festival from Wakarusa to Gathering of the Vibes, who knows how long it will take for this unit to fully reach the potential that everyone knows they have.

2 out of 5 stars Wrong suggestion.......2007-05-07

This wasn't a good suggestion from a friend of mine to buy this.
I couldn't appreciate the melody of these soft songs not made for my years 70's rock generetion. Other are my preferred guitar players: Clapton, Townshend, Lee, Gallagher, Springsteeen, Hendrix etc. and other are my beloved rythms.
I'll be happy in providing Amazon with comments about other better purchases.
Thank you for the excellent quality of your general service

4 out of 5 stars Take all the great bands of the 70s, mix, and you have..........2007-04-20

On my first listen through this CD, I was enjoing the plentiful hooks, tasteful musicianship, and wonderful harmonies. Then, digesting the CD again, I started to play "Name the Influence". What a list! For instance-
Track 1, Grand Design, is very reminisicent of the Band.
Track 2, Telling Sue - sounds as though 1971-era Grateful Dead is playing the Phish song "Back on the Train"
Track 3, Zero to the Skin - this is influenced by Billy Joel channeling John Lennon on Billy's song "Scandinavian Skies"
Track 4, Whistle Clock - Steely Dan with the Pure Prarie League singing harmony
Track 5, Samuel Aging - Mark Knopfler playing guitar for the Outlaws
Track 6, 40 Reasons - Neil Young through and through

etc. etc. With echoes of Little Feat, and maybe some Alan Parsons. Whipped up into a very pleasant souffle of good music. Tasty to the ears, and each song is distinctive. The only complaint is that, for a CD that's only 47 minutes long, the vocals start to get a little monotonous by the end. And there's no extensive jams like on their previous CD 'The Honest Hour'. But the songs are tight as a result, which is also pleasing. So a very nice album that I'm sure will get a lot of listens.

5 out of 5 stars i saw beauty.......2007-03-23

Reid Genauer, Nate Wilson and the gang have done it again... beautifully crafting songs that paint pictures in your mind so bright you can see them come to life as you listen.
From beginning to end, this record really holds you in and never lets go. And, like other timeless albums, the more you listen, the better it gets.
Bravo.

5 out of 5 stars From Strangefolk To Assembley.......2005-11-16

I have been a huge strangefolk fan ever since I was traveling through Vermont one year on my way to The Lemon wheel (The Big phish show In Main that year) when someone told me: Hey man" You should go check the Garden Of Eden Fest (Strangefolks Big Show) while on your way to see Phish:
And sure enough I had a Blast!! And when Reid left strangefolk to form this new band I was heart broken, And I thought to myself that I would never hear music like that again...But I was wrong! And this album has got me dancing again! So check to out everyone! And don't forget to get out and see the band do there thing Live! :)

5 out of 5 stars as good as I've heard.......2004-04-22

I'd heard so much about Reid Genauer being an amazing songwriter - and everything that I'd heard was right! From start to finish this album is a gem. It covers all styles of music, from the rocking "Burned Down" to the ballad "Serenade Serine" to the funky "Love Junkie". Genauer's band perfectly supports his mighty voice and powerful lyrics with some great guitar and keyboard solos and just overall solid playing.

3 out of 5 stars comes up a little short.......2004-04-15

on the outset let me say that reid genauer is perhaps one of the greatest songwriters i have ever heard. being an avid fan of strangefolk while reid was in the band and also the amazing percy hill, which features the amazing nate wilson and jon lecesse (who are also featured on this album), i was quick to pick up the new offering from reid. it features a few tunes from the old strangefolk catalogue as well as a few new ones. being a huge strangefolk fan it was a little tough to swallow the versions of some of my favorite songs but reid and the new band do them justice. the best is probably "songs we sing" which features some great soulful back up singing. the album as a whole feels a little over produced and seems to lack that gritty edge that strangefolk had or that reid and the assembly of dust have in their live performances. the album is defintely worth a listen but it my mind it comes up short...probably because of my own high expectations of reid genauer.

5 out of 5 stars outstanding - honestly.......2006-08-06

A friend turned me on to the live in Kingston cd and I was blown away. The song Honest Hour was the total hook for me - the lyrics are so descriptive and everthing flows to perfection. Great band - great album - great sound. Smooth - awesome - eclectic - down home - good time toe tapping - knee slapping put a grin on your face music.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite cd I have bought in 6 months.......2006-02-07

This cd is just great. The Paul Henry and Speculator are outstanding. It truly is "An Honest Hour" of music. Assembly of Dust is where it's at.

5 out of 5 stars One of those CDs you can play the whole way through.......2006-01-25

I had heard some Strangefolk before, so some songs were familiar to me (like Speculator). That being said, you don't need any jamband background to appreciate this CD.
The tones of each song distinguish themselves. Reid Genauer is an incredible songwriter. Nate Wilson is one of the best piano players out there in my opinion. SOngs like "Honest Hour", "Roads", and "Man with a Plan" make the CD.
If there was a 6 star rating, I would give it.

5 out of 5 stars One of my BEST purchases of 2005.......2006-01-23

Radio in Key West, Florida is really bad...R-E-A-L-L-Y bad.

Now I have satellite radio...and life is good.

Anyway, I was jamming out and working on my computer, and this really killer song came on ("roads"...track 4). I was listening to the "Jam On" station, which really isn't my thing, but I can dig it now and again (I like to keep an open mind with all types music).

In this case, what was coming out of my speakers wasn't "Jam Bandish"...it was just beautiful music, plus it totally rocked.

I stopped what I was doing and just sat their blown away and fired up. That usually doesn't happen to me during a "first listen".

I typed them into Amazon to read what the customers had to say, and at that time, was surprised to find only two reviews(both 5 stars)so I thought "what the heck", shelled out some cash, and the rest is history.

I've turned this album on to so many people...and they love it.

It's fun music, and it has to be one of the best Live performances I have ever heard.

If you are open to good music...take a chance and give this album a shot. I am a critical S.O.B. when it comes to music and I proudly give this one 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars They don't make 'em like this anymore.......2005-12-31

The hook-filled first two songs, which got some airplay on our local AAA station, grabbed me like few others have in recent years. The rest of the CD is just as good. Superior songwriting and very tight ensemble performances all the way through. Until you hear the crowd reaction between songs you can easily forget this is a live album. I was immediately reminded of The Band -- Reid Gennauer's plaintive voice has some elements of both Rick Danko and Levon Helm and the harmonies are similar, plus the lyrics evoke Robbie Robertson's heartland-inspired classics. Mortality, fate and honor are handled with skill and humor. There are also echoes of Bruce Hornsby (particularly on Speculator) and some nimble guitar reminscent of Dickey Betts. I have heard other live recordings of this band, which are freely available, and I think they really are this good live without any studio sweetening. An honest hour of intelligent, unpretentious and spirited music. Highly recommended.
