Former Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson quickly stakes out his own turf on his solo debut, frequently eschewing his familiar rock rasp for a simpler, neo-folkie delivery. Tracks like the soulful "Fables," the haunting "Katie Dear," and infectious "Silver Car" most effectively navigate a new path. But ironically, Robinson's deliberate distancing from the Crowes' excesses paints him into problematic corners. The laid-back country jones he exhibits on "Sunday Sound" and "Barefoot by the Cherry Tree" often gets the best of him, while the spare, promising folk-rock of "Could You Really Love Me?" degenerates into familiar Robinson tent-revival vocal territory. If "Ride"'s funky corners and Robinson's general willingness to experiment show promise, they also suggest the singer's talents need a little competitive goosing, a reinforcement the decades-old truism that the greatest rock music is often the byproduct of the fiercest rivalries and infighting. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Stoner loner.......2007-05-23

Not bad on some of the folksier stuff. The Rod Stewartisms only creep through occasionally. DVD is a waste though. Who wants to see 20 minutes of Chris playing the three guitar chords he knows, even if he wons some cool old Martins and Gibsons?!

5 out of 5 stars A great 5 star album: Original, Creative, Awesome!.......2004-08-30

Chris Robinson's first album with NEM is a brilliant composition that really has its own sound. There's really very little like it out there.
At first, I was skeptical of the album. I though it was a little too Pink Floyd-esque with the psychedelic sound bytes between tracks, and with the synth/piano & guitar driven tunes (especially 'Silver Car'; very reminiscent of Dark Side). However, I've come to hear it as nothing at all like Floyd. NEM does an amazing job of starting out mellow and building the energy in their songs to a frenzied level, especially in songs such as 'Could You Really Love Me,' and 'Barefoot by the Cherry Tree.' Other songs, such as 'Untangle My Mind,' and 'Sunday Sound,' and the trippy "She's on Her Way' will put a smile on your face with their upbeat and happy sound. 'Ride' is the only funky tune on the album (besides the synth solo in 'Could You Really Love Me' which is incredible) and is hit or miss, you will like it or it won't be for you.
In all, this album has the elements of greatness. Creative songwriting, use of many different instruments, bits of psychedelia, funk, and hard rock, as well as Chris Robinson's signature and addicting voice. If you are expecting the Black Crows, this album will disappoint you, however, it is an amazing album and it is unlikely to disappoint if you give it a chance.

2 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTED.......2004-06-30

I really wish I could say I liked this CD. But I liked only three songs out of the twelve presented here. Things were really looking up with "Safe In The Arms Of Love" and "Silver Car"-the two songs which kick off NEW EARTH MUD. Then we hit a morass of confused sound until "She's On Her Way"-a great song but unfortunately the last on this album.

I was a big fan of the Black Crowes. I even liked the albums most critics panned such as THREE SNAKES & ONE CHARM and AMORICA. So I was really ready to root for Robinson's new project. Maybe in the future, things will pick up. But in the meantime I would advise others to take a pass on this one.

NEW EARTH MUD comes with a companion DVD contained a documentary and live accostic performances the band. A lot of people eat this kind of thing up and would buy this album just to get the DVD. I was unimpressed and bored. The DVD didn't change my attitude toward NEW EARTH MUD in the least.

Sorry, Chris. I'm on your side but I can't recommend this one.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Expect It To Sound Like The Crowes!.......2004-03-08

It took me a while to "get" this record. I have to admit that when I first bought it I was a little disappointed, probably because I am a very big Crowes fan and was hoping for something in that style. But given a little time, the CD has really grown on me. I would say my favorite songs are probably "Sliver Car", which has a Pink Floyd-ian feel to it, "Kids That Ain't Got None", which reminds me of old Elton John, and "Better Than The Sun", which has a Beatles feel, but really I like all of the songs with the exception of "Katie Dear" ... but hey, the man wants to write a song for his wife. I won't begrudge him that. If you go into it with an open mind you might actually find that you enjoy this record. It's perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon when you're just chillin' ... some very mellow grooves here.

5 out of 5 stars they do still make music!.......2004-02-25

well, i turned 30 this past year and i thought my love for good music was just a phase i went through, or something that is reserved for people younger than me. i remember when i was in my teens, i would buy an album and listen nonstop for days & days. i hadn't done that in a while, until i bought this album. i now realize there just hasn't been any good music since before the grunge days. i had only heard "safe in the arms of love" when i purchased it. i thought it was a really decent song, and i was so desperate for some new music that was listenable i took a chance and bought the album. man, was this the right decision! i can't take it out of my car stereo. the rest of the songs don't really sound like "safe". but they are the best songs i have heard in years. i like the album so well that this is the first review that i felt like i should write. other people are saying you would have to either like or dislike the black crowes to apprieciate this album. i don't agree. i was a big fan of the first two crowes albums, but i couldn't name a song on their later ones. heres how i would explain it: if you deeply love music, but you think 99% of the stuff on the radio nowadays is garbage, this album is for you!
