THE BEST AUDIO VERSION AVAILABLE.......2006-08-17

If you are looking for the best audio versions, navigating the array of domestic, European and Japanese releases for each Nilsson album can be a frustrating experience.

I have purchased and painstakingly A/B'd them all, and have posted this review on the best editions of each Nilsson title. All you have to do is find this review and the guesswork is eliminated.

As with all my A/B reviews, the discs were compared on two Sony XA7 transports wired via identical Acoustic Zen coax cables to a Camelot Uther DAC.

The entire catalog was issued in 2002 with Japanese K2 remastering. In terms of remastering, K2 would usually be the end of the story, but this catalog is the rare exception: The final six albums in the K2 offering are the best audio versions, but in the front half of the catalog, the UK and one domestic editions are superior.

The 2004 RCA remaster of "Schmilsson" is the only domestic release that is better than the imports.

The three 2000 BMG Camden UK releases offer more clarity than the Japanese K2's. Perhaps they were working from better source material.

However, the Japanese K2's are definitely better than the UK "2-fer" discs in the later titles. Unfortunately, the K2's are now OOP, more difficult and expensive to locate, although the Japanese frequently re-issue catalog titles.

Before purchasing any OOP Nilsson title off Amazon Marketplace, Half or eBay, I would highly suggest e-mailing the seller (with the catalog number info I have provided above) and confirm the listing. The seller may have another edition of these titles mis-listed.

Nillson sings Newman? Watch before you buy!.......2005-09-06

OK... this has BUNCHES more songs than the original. Buy this, not the one that has the "car" photo on the cover, although that was the original LP.

Harry/Nilsson Sings Newman [Extra Tracks][Import].......2004-01-13

Of all the CDs I own, this is my favorite. The selections are extraordinarily original and Nilsson's voice has the tenor that fits them to perfection. The Rainmaker story is wonderfully chilling and can give you goose bumps, and The Puppy Song is a truly endearing story of friendship.
This is the only album of Nilsson's that contains these particular songs. I recommend it highly.

Great 2fer missing a couple of tracks from US CD issue.......2000-10-09

This is actually a 2fer of Nilsson's Harry album and Nilsson Sings Newman. Both albums fit together really well (particularly since Harry was recorded just prior to NSN and closes with one of Randy's tunes). Nilsson Sings Newman offers a more textured less smooth production style which fits well with Newman's ironic wit. The only other artist besides Newman that could do justice to his material was Harry (and, at times, Harry actually could do Randy better than Randy).

I've been trying various Nilsson records out over the last few weeks and this is the one that finally got me. Holy cow. For my tastes, a true overlooked classic. Of course, the songs are great. The vocals (incredible harmonies) are heartbreaking. And then Newman on piano -- you can't ask for much more.

Highly recommended.

A Somewhat Dissenting View.......2006-05-05

I owned this album on vinyl back in the day. It was always one of my favorites; particularly because it was so small, so intimate and so utterly un-pop.

I've read some carping here about the inclusion of "Beehive State". I gotta disagree; it happens to be my favorite cut.

HARRY reflects Nilsson's penchant for British music hall: 4 stars. It opens with Nilsson alone, where he can display his skill as a crooner for our times, somehow uniting town-park gazebo Americana, Washington Park folk, and British music hall. No one else comes close. He has a gorgeous voice, but he is not Sinatra as claimed at the time. Settings fit songs and voice well. High standards throughout. Stand-out: tr 10-Lord must be in New York City.

Adding NILSSON SINGS NEWMAN ups the ante. I have searched for this album for decades; it is one of the best albums of all time and a personal favorite: 5 stars. [64:35]

Randy Newman's best record because he didn't sing.......2005-04-27

Kalo is dead-right about this being a lieder recital. But don't let that turn you off. Like Rob Damn said, THE BEEHIVE STATE is an utter dud. But even worse is COWBOY, which ends in a cascading cacophony-tribute to John Barry's THEME FROM MIDNIGHT COWBOY. Like Unkle Joe said, LIVING WITHOUT YOU is the clincher. The sung-by-Harry version is infinitely superior to the sung-by-Randy version due to the fact that Harry had an actual voice and could actually sing. Randy's lonely echoed piano chords are incredibly eloquent.

hats off to Harry.......2001-10-10

he put his heart and soul into this album and it shows-- basically it is just Newman on piano and Nilsson and his army of clones singing harmony on top of harmony. what an original Nilsson was- a class of his own and deserves no comparisons because he was a perfect example of what individualiry can be without being pretentious or showing off to the crowd. He did as he pleased with love of what he did and he did it like no other- this album shows that- both in what you hear and what it stands for.
