Product Description
This is Fish’s twelfth studio album in a music career that has spanned over 23 years and is his eighth solo project since leaving Marillion in 1988. "I am very proud of this album and if it is my last one then it’s a good one to leave on!" says Fish. Recorded at Fish's house in East Lothian, it is an album that is bound to delight his fans and surprise others. Strongly Blues influenced (especially Zoo Class) with a beautiful ballad (Shot the Craw), the raw rock sound is punchy and anthemic, with tracks like Old Crow begging to be played live.

Album Description

Artist Overview

The 77's are, and have been, one of the most important bands in Christian music since they hit the scene in 1984. Sixteen years later they are just as vital and progressive as ever. Their latest, A Golden Field Of Radioactive Crows, offers 12 brand new songs. Described by front man and founder Michael Roe as a cross between the soulful pop of his second solo release, The Boat Ashore, and the scorching rock the Sevens became known for. The band manages to strike a balance between the raucous and the sensitive that recalls some of their earlier albums, (77s, Ping Pong Over The Abyss and All Fall Down). Perhaps the most pop-oriented 77's project to date, A Golden Field of Radioactive Crows will no doubt be The favorite listen throughout Spring and Summer 2001. And weaving underneath all of that sun and fun madness are the usual 77's lyrics, brimming with the kind of spiritual angst, conflict, challenge and resolve that have made these golden boys the heroes of Christian modern rock for over 16 years.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A five star studio effort from Michael Roe and Co. .......2005-05-08

This is a fantastic set of songs crafted in the way that only the 77's can achieve. The backdrop is heavy guitars, in the foreground is the pure rock voice of Mr. Roe. The lyrics are smart, catchy and from time to time - profound. Listen to 'Related' and you will understand- "You cannot keep the box that you came in". 'Mr. Magoo' is a fast-paced alternative cut. 'Genuine' is exactly that. This album (very fortunately) typifies what we all would have hoped for in a turn-of-the-century version of this ultra-cool Christian Rock crew.

4 out of 5 stars Not their best, but still pretty good........2003-06-24

The Seventy-Sevens are one of those great bands that never seems to get the credit they deserve. A Golden Field of Radioactive Crows is a fine album from a very talented Mike Roe and Co. It still has some of the old 77s "broodiness", but it isn't as dark as something like Drowning with Land in Sight, or Tom Tom Blues. The 77s are very good at what they do, with is basically blues-rock. This album seems to have a little something for everyone, so I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars More of the same from the best Christian band ever.......2002-12-18

If you have never heard of the 77's but you like Christian alternative music, buy all the 77's albums and get rid of whatever you are listening to now.

This is simply the best band around, secular or Christian....that sounds like an exageration but once you have seen them live you will agree.

This album, despite the wacky name is almost their best album. The 77's is one of the few bands where their best songs are live recordings where they improvise endlessly. "88" is their best album due to this fact. But of their harder albums, Pray Naked, Late etc. this is better, richer and more playable.

One of the best unimprovised 77's song ever in on this album, "Begin" is the best musically, the deepest lyrically and has great and unexpectedly smooth changes of pace. It combines all their strengths, acoustic guitar and subtly smooth and strong base line, Mike singing harmony, some brief but moving guitar solos and lyrics that reach you when you listen to them but somehow are not as impressive when you read them.

Also notable is "U R tripping" a song that doesn't sound like any other 77's song I can recall.

There is a lot new and suprisingly on this album, but also a lot of the same immense musical creativity and talent that is the 77s.

5 out of 5 stars What's it SOUND like?.......2002-12-02

The lyrics might offer Christians and non-believers lots to think about, but what does the 77s sound like? Hard pop to alternative is closest to defineable genres in which the 77s fit. Hard, but not really heavy, slightly punkish, '70s-flavored, laid back headphone music also describes 'em. No offense intended to Michael Roe (the vocalist), but he sounds a bit like Mick Jagger. Despite this, the 77s sound great! They're on the fringe of popular Christian music in that they're too Christian for the mainstream, but they're lyrically too edgy for the Christian subculture. Mark Allan Powell's Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music (also available at Amazon) calls the 77s "one of the two or three best Christian rock bands of all time." As Christian bands go, and they come and go pretty quickly, the 77s have been around for quite a while (since '79). That longevity is indicative of the quality of their work. The 77s doesn't play your stereotyped Christian music! Golden Field is the only 77s album I own (now), but after hearing them, they're definitely on my want-list!

4 out of 5 stars Collaboration.......2002-06-14

One listen makes it clear that "A Golden Field..." is a more collaborative effort than anything the 77s have put out in the last decade. The liner notes confirm it, with drummer Spencer or bassist Harmon credited with music, lyrics or both on every song and head man Roe contributing to a lesser extent than in the past. This collaboration brings new stylistic territory with it, nothing extreme but still noticeable. While "A Golden Field..." is a solid record, it seems like a transition for the band that could bear much greater fruit on future offerings.

Based in Texas, Darden Smith has been writing and performing for two decades. Field of Crows is his tenth release and is informed by world events, though not overtly. Heart and conscience empowers his writing and he eschews any sloganeering, allowing his own sociopolitical concerns to take on a human scale. The arrangements have flair and drive, giving a listener the opportunity to be swept up in the musical identity of the songs. The lyric's narratives and sentiments then find their way in to one's awareness with gentle mystery and ease. Co-produced by Smith and Stewart Lerman, the pair have a successful working relationship over a handful of albums. These dozen tunes embrace longing and hope with confident and utterly believable emotional resonance. --David Greenberger

4 out of 5 stars Soft Breeze.......2006-05-29

Darden Smith's "Field of Crows" is a vibrant subtle work that deepens with repeated listenings. The opener "Talk Me Down" is a sweet melody that goes by like a soft breeze. "Mary" is a touching song as a divorced father reassures his daughter about her mother's upcoming wedding. Eliza Gilkyson's vocals back Darden on the percolating "Golden Age" that splashes vaudeville sideshow music onto gentle sadness. "Wide Open" is a tender tune about a guy who is carrying a torch for a lost love, "Love just doesn't disappear with a lover; you're always with me wherever I go." "Spinning Wheel" spices country flavoring with a ditty backed by Stuart Smith's harmony vocals. "If I could love you like Elvis, Elvis back in '62, hips on fire full of desire, it wouldn't be good enough for you," Smith whisper-sings on the soft melody "Satisfied." Phil Roy helps Darden pen "Fight for Love" with Eliza harmonizing softly. "Boy" bounces with a backward glance at the past, "Let the colors wash all over you; Amsterdam to San Fran, no one plays it like you can." "Field of Crows" is a soft dreamy set that explores sadness with a gentle tenderness rather than wallowing in the blues. This set is a quiet fireside gem. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Another gem from darden smith............2006-01-11

I bought this cd in the fall when it was released in England
and have been playing this on heavy rotation in the Cd player
since. It has so many great songs and his focus on world issues
and love and loss always find there way into your head, great
singing, the band is exceptional this time out, everything about
"Field of Crows" is classy, its Darden's mature, smooth vocals
and laid back approach to recording that makes his music
stand out, especially on this one. He writes songs so well, "Mary" for instance has
a different perspective on a father trying to explain and
be supportive to his little girl whose mother is about to marry
another man. The title cut is one of my favorites, just
so filled with atmosphere. Taking in so many classics from
the 70's from Neil Young and Jackson Browne to name a few, Darden has gone back and written a patch of songs that one
can listen to over and over through the years, another winner
in his 10+ collection.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely good, takes a while to get into though........2006-01-10

This is an interesting album from Darden Smith. It echoes the softly, softly style of its predecessor, Circo, but its themes are somewhat more earth-bound and universal, usefully ditching the awkward spiritual ambiguity I disliked in that album. It's an album suffused with the malaise felt by forty-somethings with a lot on their mind in 2006 - Field of Crows is coloured by world events and a realisation that life is changing, and generally not for the better. Leaving aside the somewhat half-hearted `Fight for Love', Darden seems to have cottoned on that he can't do much about these changes, though he chooses one minute to keep trying, but from a different angle (`Golden Age'), and the next to feel sorry for himself (`All That I Wanted'). Trouble is, Darden's so good at expressing the way many of us are feeling about the state of our lives and the world just now, that `Field of Crows' borders on the depressing. The downbeat mood of this album is pressed home by the whispered vocals and arrangements that send the music into dark, quiet corners. At times Darden really does sound like the man `making his last stand in a field of crows' as the lyric goes. `If anybody asks,' he says in `Mary', `say I'm doing fine.' But he doesn't lose all perspective thankfully - there is some hope! Some very good songs too. `Satisfied' is my favourite, perhaps because it harks back to an earlier style (like `Two Dollar Novels') and is so beautifully constructed and executed. This is a gem. `Mary' too is very well done, moving even. I'm also a fan of the title track, which has a very catchy melodic opening line or two. `Spinning Wheel' has an infectious groove to it and a nice bluesy quality. Nicely produced, there's a dark, velvety quality to the sound that'll make this a late-night favourite. And only a couple of tracks (`Boy' and `Fight for Love') fail to meet the high standard of most of the songs on this collection. So it's highly recommended, but not if you're feeling depressed already!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good comeback - Fantastic, creative piece of work.......2007-04-09

Actually 4.5 stars. I love this album and could give 5 stars if it wasn't for the incompetent "Innocent Party" with it's anti-American lyrics
often typical of European artists who don't really understand how far and wide the war on terror is (David Coverdale big example) and how even if America has made mistakes in it's prosecution of it, America nonetheless is the only country with the nerve to prosecute the war on terror ... I mean the song borders on saying America 'had 9/11 coming' ..... (What a bunch of garbage). That's a truly awful song but good tracks include Take the Field, Lost Plot (great song), Moving Target and the last track, Scattering Crows - a song with tremendous emotion and desperation of a man
hoping against hope a woman who he wronged will give him another chance
and let him apologize ... the emotion of the track is about enough
to bowl you over! Anyway Fish in his voice and emotional delivery, and
his songwriting continues to be one talented SOB

2 out of 5 stars It's painful to say..........2007-03-02

I will continue to buy his new material as a show of support. I will continue to give all his new material a fair chance and listen with an open mind. I simply can't find anything good to say about Field of Crows. I listened to it sober, drunk, high, happy, sad and indifferent. Each time I found myself skipping to the next track half way through a song. Just plain boring. Mudane vocal performance that don't bring one to care what the lyrical message may be. I love ya Fish, but let's get busy on something interesting eh?

4 out of 5 stars Fish - The "Old Crow" Puts Out Another Good One.......2007-03-02

For this one Fish brings in guitarist Bruce Watson as his songwriting partner, although I know nothing about him. This album is quite different musically from Fish's past endeavors. It is more straight ahead rock n roll oriented with a bluesy edge on several of the tracks. I think it is a step down from his previous 3 studio albums, but it is a good effort with above average songs. Fish has definitely moved on to a more modern sound on this album which may turn off those just looking for his progressive rock past. You can't blame the guy for trying to move forward and for the most part it works on this disc. "The Field", "Innocent Party", "Moving Targets" are all solid rockers. "Old Crow" is downright funky. Is Fish singing about himself as the "Old Crow", or someone else? "Exit Wound" is another strong one and "Shot The Craw" is a great little ballad looking back on relationships lost. The album closer "Scattering Crows" brings the whole album to a climax and with the sound of a shotgun blast and crows flying up from "The Field". As mentioned earlier Fish has done better albums, but I enjoy this one a lot as well.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff here.......2006-02-19

I'm a huge Fish fan but was hesitant to pick this up after reading some of the reviews. I finally found it in a music store during a recent trip to New York and am really glad I did. It's worth buying for "Numbers" alone. That is one of my all-time favorite Fish songs. I also dig "Moving Targets," "Exit Wound," "Scattering Crows" and have really warmed up to "Old Crow." Not the man's best album, but no artist consistently cranks out masterpieces. Still, some great works of art here.

And why all the hating on Felini Days? That's a brilliant album.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2005-09-13

I'm kind of suprised at some of the bad reviews this album is getting. This is classic Fish! It has a good rock 'n roll feel to it, Numbers, Zoo Class, Moving Targets are some really good rockers. There's also some of the more slow songs, Exit Wound is really good, it has a kind of jazzy feel to it. The best song on this album has to be Innocent Party, this is one of the best Fish songs I've ever heard. How could you not like that song? If you like Fish or Marillion you will certainly like this album. Just don't expect "Clutching at Straws" part two.
