clearly good music.......2007-06-10

I feel it's my duty to stick up for the bands that are not only really good, but also underrated. You know, bands that didn't have much success and therefore most people probably wouldn't remember them today.

Clear Light is one such band. It's really unfair to call these guys (and this album in particular) a Doors rip-off. How do you figure that? Just because there's a few spooky moments, suddenly they're copying what the Doors did? Would Iron Butterfly be considered a Doors rip-off, too?

Clear Light is much closer to Iron Butterfly and the band Love than to the Doors, in my opinion. Further, these guys were really good at experimenting with all the different ways to write a tune, which means guitar solos and all sorts of vocal changes will burst in a completely different direction *very* suddenly. Iron Butterfly used to do the same thing. This is a style of songwriting that NEVER gets old.

I love this album. Seeing as how each of the 12 songs are memorable, I refuse to name which songs are the standouts (but if you forced me to choose, "A Child's Smile" is probably my favorite). Trust me, the whole thing is great. Buy this album now.

Pretty Darn Good!.......2006-09-04

In my closet is this album from way back when. I bought it due to the psyechedelia and Electra pedigree, but stuck around long enough to love it on its own terms. It has the elongated song structure, the vision, the transcendental lyrics, the bold manly singer, and most importantly the stretched out fluidity of the music. All of which made the Doors and Love brilliant. But, it is not, I'm sad to say, as good as either. Clear Light had the chops, but not the cajones. As a slice of the best of garage acid trippin', one could do worse. Buy it. Drink and see!

Paul Rothchild's Frankenstein Project Rules.......2004-08-02

Clear Light may be dismissed by some as a "Doors Lite" band, but I think the material and playing on this CD is outstanding. I was hooked as soon as I heard "Black Roses" with it's amazing time signature changes, played at a breathtaking hardcore punk pace (before the beast ever existed).
Some tracks have the definite Doors-Love sound without the drunken tunelessness of Jim Morrison, so you get movie actor Cliff De Young's great vocals instead. "Mister Blue" even has that "petition the Lord with prayer" dramatics with 100 times more focus.
Favorite tracks: She's Ready To be Free, Sand, The Ballad of Freddy and Larry (about gay love?). Recommended.

Solid second-line Elektra psyche offering.......2004-07-25

I first bought this album when I was 14 years old, mainly on the strength of it being on the Elektra label, which up to that point had not issued a single bad album. I also recognized bassist Douglas Lubahn's name, as he had played bass on the first two Doors albums. And on top of all that, they had TWO DRUMMERS!!! How cool was that? (well, to be honest, you couldn't tell by playing the album, but the idea sounded great.)
I played this thing to death for well over a year and I often named them as one of my favorite bands. A nice mix of light weight psych with some occasional fuzz bursts from guitarist Bob Seal, who also sang one of the best tunes on the album. With 35 years perspective, this is not a classic album by any means, but for fans of Love and The Doors and that particular summer of love sound, this album holds many delights. Trivia note: The bonus track, She's ready to be free, taken from the James Coburn movie The President's Analyst, was actually sung by Barry - Eve of Destruction - McGuire in the movie. Watch for it on late night TV.

Traditional Christmas Music .......2007-01-24

If you love traditional Christmas music, done in traditional style (i.e., no rock or jazz influence), this CD is for you. The Robert Shaw Chorale, the "gold standard" of quality choral music, sings much loved carols, with some lesser-known pieces as well. Some are a cappella; some include a full orchestral accompaniment. My favorites on this CD are "We Three Kings," "Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella," and "I Saw Three Ships."

The quintessential Christmas recording.......2005-12-09

This recording seems to elicit universal and heartfelt praise. Who am I to dispute that? The performance is terrific, just as described by the other Amazon reviewers, no doubt about it.

However, I do have one bone to pick with this recording. There just isn't enough of it. With material as good as this, that is a real loss!

A Top List Christmas CD.......2004-12-28

I bought this cd long ago, and have enjoyed it immensely each year. It is the perfect blend of celebration and meditation. Orchestra and choir combine in four distinct groupings, and a capella arrangements complete the masterful collection. The orchestral arrangements will make the hairs on your neck stand up, and your stomach quiver with all the excitement you ever felt as a child at Christmas. Adeste Fidelis is performed as few other ensembles have ever come close. The a capella arrangements will all, without exception, be on your yearly list of must-hear holiday arrangements. Truly a top list Christmas CD, essential for every family who celebrates this feast.

The best.......2004-01-02

I own approximately 35 Christmas choral CDs - including choirs and groups such as the Cambridge Singers and the King Singers. I also own two Christmas albums with Robert Shaw and the Atlantic symphony. This performance with the Robert Shaw Chorale is old but it is still my favorite. The arrangements are magnificent, the sound is brilliant, and the choir and orchestra are precise with wonderful volume control. Buy and enjoy!

How do you describe perfection?.......2003-12-14

This is my favorite Christmas CD. Nothing comes close. I thoroughly enjoyed learning much of the music in high school choir over 30 years ago. The music has never left me. The four medleys are the arrangements of Robert Russell Bennett titled "The Many Moods of Christmas". The arrangements seem to have a freshness about them even after listening numerous times.

Interspersed with the medleys are a cappella carols.

All of this music is wonderfully performed by the Robert Shaw Chorale, the a cappella selections recorded in 1957 and the medleys in 1963.

Four decades have proven that this is the standard in choral music. The clarity of text, the richness of tone, the beauty of harmony combine to present the message of Christmas in the manner that only music can do.

These words are no surprise to those familiar with choral music in the United States. If you are not so familiar, but would like to enjoy Christmas music at its most beautiful, you can do no better than acquiring this CD.

Robert King deserves to be famous in America, too.......2006-07-23

Robert King and his King's Consort have made dozens of recordings, establishing themselves in London as a pre-eminent Baroque group. They benefit greatly from King's unflagging energy and musical insight. Twenty years ago you couldn't say that the period movement had attracted the best musicians and conductors. That situation has changed radically, and this sampler CD from King's complete recordings exhibits first-class playing throughout. Baroque singing is at a high level, too, but you couldn't say that his singers are of Met or Royal Opera House quality--even so, they are very good.

As an indicator of the strides that period performance has made, this is an eye-opening CD, but it's also engaging for the general listener, like me, who only dips into Handel's many, many operas and oratorios occasionally.

Bargain-priced first-class overview.......2006-05-01

This is a great CD for beginners, but also for those who already have a few Handel CDs. So often samplers have all the favourites which you already have on other CDs. But this set has a few well-known tracks, such as Zadok the Priest, See the Conqu'ring Hero Comes and La Rejouissance from The Fireworks, but mostly wonderful music, superbly played which is not extremely well known.

Highly recommended.

Top notch.......2006-07-01

In my opinion, this is one of the best CD's I have ever herd. The playing is clean and pure, and never gets old. I have 100's of classical CD's, but I never tire of this one.

Bright, snappy brass chior feeling........2000-05-20

This is a bright, snappy forward moving CD. I have owned all their records/CD's at sometime, and this is my all time favorite. The playing is awesome, very baroque in style. You'll recognizes some tunes and fall in love with the rest.

What a wonderful CD!.......2003-07-15

This really is a beautiful collection of music. "The Triumphs of Oriana" was published in 1601 by famous English composer Thomas Morley as a collection of songs honoring Queen Elizabeth (Oriana). 25 major English composers' songs are in here, except for William Byrd. The vocals are beautiful and really take the listener back to the golden age of European civilization. There are also several lute pieces inserted into the CD to add to the Renaissance feeling. This is an excellent CD!

The triumphs of I Fagiolini.......2002-08-25

The Triumphs of Oriana are a collection of polyphonic songs of the Elisabethian period published by Morley to honour Oriana (poetic nickname of Queen Elisabeth I). Therefore he collected songs composed by 25 wellknown English composers of his time (only William Byrd is missing) which all end with the words "Long life fair Oriana".
I already heard the Triumphs of Oriana sung by the King's Singers. This version by I Fagiolini sounds differently, as they are 7 men and 3 women instead of 6 men, but the result is very interesting: the female voices give indeed more brilliant to the sound.
Because this series was famous in its time among the amateurs, for private concerts, this CD includes various lute pieces in order to sound like an Elisabethian private concert.
Today, the listener has other standards and I don't find this idea is really good: it deforces the a cappella songs by a kind of intermezzo.
Anyway, the listener has yet the possibility to skip the lute pieces if he likes thanks to the miracle of the CD player.
In that case, the CD is really very good.

Beautiful wind ensemble music.......2003-06-29

This treasure of a CD features some beautiful wind ensemble music, which really should receive more attention in the mainstream. Not your typical Sousa CD, this features the wind ensemble at its best, with both sections of the full, gorgeous ensemble sound and solo sections featuring the individual tone colors that contribute to the unique ensemble sound. The emotional capacity of this type of ensemble is huge, and this CD demonstrates that well. I would certainly recommend this CD to any lovers of band music and classical music, particularly those who enjoy the Romantic and 20th century composers who tend to use the winds to a fuller extent.

This album is excellent! Three tubas and a euphonium. I especially love it for the beautiful Christmas half, tracks 18 thru 35. (It's not a new album, it's just the same album wrongly listed here as out of stock, under the title "Mighty Tubadours" [without the "The"] and a different ASIN.

Cherokee Rose is a very talented artist. After purchasing this CD, I have become a big fan of her music! This CD has become one of my favorites to listen and relax to. I hope she releases another CD with native american influences. Her new age release under the name Rose Moore entitled "Spirit of Silence" is good but I am more fond of her sound on this album. The basic composition of her voice with native drums and guitar is what makes this CD great! My favorite songs are "Coming Up River" and "Forevermore" but I enjoy all of the songs on the album.
