Book of the Dead is a conceptual work with 5 songs presented as chapters. With ideas and stories taken directly from the Egyptian Book of the Dead, Ken has weaved an intricate, ornate tale of Pharonic rule, death and their ultimate journey to the afterlife. Ken has long had a love and fascination with ancient Egypt, and now he gets to realize a life long dream of releasing this fantastic CD. Book of the Dead showcases brilliant musicianship from guitar god Allan Holdsworth, Doug Sanborn on the drum kit, keyboards from Ryo Okumoto, of Spocks Beard fame, violin from classical virtuoso Yvette Devereaux, and the late, great Shaun Guerin on vocals who passed away shortly after finishing his vocals.

The previous review is simply a gross falsification. I have been an obsessed opera fan for a long time, and Thomas Hampson is a truly special singer. He is not the possesor of the largest or most interesting voice, which he will tell you and indeed says so all the time. His commitment to text, his willingness to search out parts to fit his voice, and his dedication to art song make im invaluable to Americans as a ture Troubador. His light Baritone was ideally suited to Figaro and to Valentin and the art song he loves. He must stretch to sing Verdi, where his voice sounds dry and small but many singers have chanced Verdi at their peril, and his innate ablity to inhabit a song, here evidenced in Di Provenza overcomes fact that it is out of his fach. You misinformed opinion of Hampson is mean and strangly bitter. I love Opera, but I do not love every singer, which doesn't mean I debase their very artistic existance. I have seen Hampson live, and have loved him (in Thias) and somewhat disliked him (in Simon Boccanegra) As for him being pretentious, somwetimes I find him mannered, but always charming. SOmetimes Intellectualism can appear pretentious, but surely you wont hold an opera singer to the charge that he must be unintellectual. what a vitriolic review, please buy this Cd, it merits repeated listening to a true American SINGER,

The title of this album is an oxymoron. Or a sick joke. I can't decide. Sure he has made millions by luring the uninitiated listener into his web of deceit and conceit, but don't be fooled any longer. How fortunate Hampson has been to sing for and with great artists to shoulder his heavy load.

An Homage to a Great Artist.......2005-10-30

EMI is wisely creating a series of recordings to gather the moments of artists that showcase the very reasons they become so highly regarded. Usually these collections are produced late in careers or even posthumously, but in the case of THE VERY BEST OF THOMAS HAMPSON the artist is still one of the more active and premiere singers of our day. Yet while he doesn't still perform all of these inclusions, it is wonderful to have excerpts from various successful recordings to remind us of the artistry that Hampson represents.

The two disc set includes arias from operas: Rossini's 'Il barbière di Siviglia', von Weber's 'Euryanthe', Gounod's 'Faust', Massenet's 'Hérodiade', Bizet's 'Les Pêcheurs de perles' (in duet with Placido Domingo), Thomas' 'Hamlet', Verdi's 'Don Carlo', 'Il Travatore', 'Macbeth', 'La Traviata', and 'Falstaff', Korngold's 'Die Tote Stadt', and Wagner's 'Tannhäuser'.

But the rewards of a Hampson recording must include his impeccable career as a lieder stylist and on this recording are excerpts from Schumann's 'Dichterliebe', Schubert's 'Winterreise', Mahler's 'Rückert Lieder' and 'Das Lied von der Erde', as well as songs by Meyerbeer, Rossini, Grieg, Kalman, and Lehar. And very importantly there are examples of American songs that Hampson has always emphasized in his recitals. Works by Stephen Foster, and two extraordinary works with the brilliant accompanist Armen Guzelimian - 'An Old Song Re-sung' by Griffes and 'At Dawning' by Charles Wakefield Cadman - round out this fine survey.

Not usually a collector of such 'recombinations', for this listener this album is so very fine that it deserves the attention of all those who appreciate the artistry of Thomas Hampson - then and now. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, October 05

superb vocals.......2005-08-07

Mr.Hampson really gets the chance to showcase his wonderful baritone voice in this "Best of" collection which includes excellent selections from his various other CDs. I like the diversity of the selections featuring operatic arias,works from classical composers, and folk songs. For Thomas hampson fans, as well as fans of the baritone voice, this CD is for them.

Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31

The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.

I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month!That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included,especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though,there is a complain:i can't understand,why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song,the cues from the Bacchaen festival,music from Deja Vou All Over Again,where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest!That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style,should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes.It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song,will agree with me!Mmmm!

A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29

To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

I ordered it just to have a copy of "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes, but after listening to the album, I am completely blown away. It is perhaps the greatest piece of music I now own. Depending on the song, I can get lifted up, mellowed out, or layed back, again THANK YOU, for having this album. I'm a very satisfied customer.

Not a Great CD.......2003-11-07

This CD was originally longer with more titles. It seems the Altissimo! people after they acquired it from the Canadian Scottish cut out several titles and reduced the overall quality of the CD. Because of this and various other technical factors I would not recommend this CD at this inflated price.

Forerunner to Sky.......2006-02-23

This CD is really a compilation of the 3 "experimental" albums John Williams did before his venture with the Prog Rock group Sky. So if you are a classical purist then you might not like this CD. Otherwise, it's a rare combination of songs from "Changes", "The Height Below", and "Travelling" - the 3 albums that eventually led to Sky. Also, a few songs from his work with Cleo Laine are thrown in.

The overall style of this CD is like a soundtrack (such as the music from "The Deer Hunter"). But it still features great guitar work as well (several from Bach). Williams' playing is clean and crisp - whether he is playing a straight classical piece or doing an accompanyment. You will see he is accomplished in both roles with this CD. Classical purists might consider this "light weight" but the rest of us call it accessable and interesting.

No portrait of a singer can satisfy all cmers, so EMI has shrugged its shoulders and tossed a bit of everything into the pot. (Without including any bonus tracks, one should note.) Hampson is without a doubt the successor to Fischer-Dieskau as the world's most famous operatic baritone. His strengths, like F-D's, are in song, especially American song. Seven of the 19 cuts here are American songs, which isn't enough. We don't really need Hampson's rather plodding and earnest Viennese operetta aria, nor his duet, "Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better" with the shrill Kim Criswell (to tell the truth, neither does very well). Two small slivers from Schumann's Dichterlieve cycle seems rather silly, too.

But that leaves a lot that's wonderful--all the American selections, the Rossini and Liszt songs, the aria form Korngold's Die Tote Stadt, and above all Hampson's rollicking, let-'er-rip rendition of Figaro's aria form the Barber of Seville. If this omnium gatherum entices listeners to bu the complete recordings, it will serve a very good purpose.

Beautiful Voice, Bad Choices.......2003-11-25

Short and Sweet.

I love listening to this beautiful baritone's voice, but I really don't like his choice of songs on this album. Beautiful Dreamer is so hackneyed and I can't stand to listen to it (also why I didn't buy the Stephen Foster album). I did like is choice of two classic lieder by Schumann. I would have chosen more lieder for a different album, he does great things with it. The Live recording of Largo al factotum from Barber is distracting with audience claps and poor mics for the recording. You can hear him walking away from the mics (fading in and out). The absolute worst choice is "Anything You Can Do" from Annie Get Your Gun. It sounds nice but I hate this song. The rest of the songs swing from Sappy awful to beautifully sung.

Bottom Line: Inconsistent and Not worth your money. He can do much better

A Great Showcase of Hampson's Voice and Artistry.......2002-02-23

Thomas Hampson is definitely one of the greatest artists on today's musical scene. This CD displays the beauty of Hampson's voice and the intelligence and artistry that he brings to a great variety of musical styles (German, French and Italian Opera; Italian, French and German art song, and American music). Among the highlights are the first selection, the beautiful "Mein Sehnen, mein Wähnen" from DIE TOTE STADT by Korngold, sung with great control and melting pianissimos. The same can be said of the aria from TANNHAUSER. His live "Largo al Factotum" from IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA is just virtuosistic, with effortless high notes (even a cadenza up to high C) and energetic vocal acting. In the art songs he is no less impressive, with total involvement in the style and mood of the songs, being particularly impressive "Oh, quand je dors" by Lizt. The American repertoire is also a delight. Hampson displays all kind of nuances for this repertoire, from the estatic quality of "Beautiful Dreamer" to the humor and bawdiness of "Where Is The Life that Late I Led". In summary, this is a delightful and eclectic souvenir from one of the most charismatic and intelligent singers of our time.

This EMI disc, "Thomas Hampson, Portrait" is an excellent example of the wide range of this melliflous baritone. From the first German aria, Korngold's "Mein Sehnen, mein Wahnen" one of my personal favourites, to Jerome Kern's "The Last Time I saw Paris" you have great variety of opera, lieder and popular song offering you examples of Hampson's great talent. The ARS NOVA trio (Keyboards, bass & drums-violin) performs a kind of instrumental symphonic rock, dominated by emphatic-sounding, majestic keyboards and by the complex compositions of Keiko KUMAGAI. A gorgeous masterpiece; my favorite CD all year!.......2005-11-29

Emily Van Evera is the Penelope Rich of the 21st century... beautiful, brilliantly gifted, and a scrupulous steward of those gifts. Her voice is pure magic, passionate and fiercely intelligent, both elegant and sensual. She is more than musician - she's a complete actress, portraying the meaning embedded in each word. Her voice is consistently masterful, precise, like a bell ringing in a cathedral. The way she nails each pitch, and inhabits it, and sustains... and sustains... is delicious.

The arrangements for this recording are impeccable. Even the running order seems perfectly organic. The scholarship behind the entire project is thorougly engaging, a gripping story artfully told. Van Evera's liner notes describe each piece with meticulous eloquence. The material traverses a wide variety of moods from the playful "Pretty Woods" to the sexy "In Fields Abroad" to a lullaby so tender and gentle it is almost whispered. I can't pick a favorite track: right now it's a three-way tie between "Deceitful Fancy", "The Thrush", and "Sweet Stay Awhile". Whatever she is singing, Van Evera's voice is always lush, haunting, thrilling.

Yo sup peeps. I bought this album and i thought it was alright. The lyrics are amazing thats for sure. The only thing that i had a problem with this album was some of the beats, some of them were strange, like strange fruit lol, but i still thought that it was a decent album. When reviewing New York's Scienz of Life's debut long player I'm left speechless. There seems to be only a few words that I can use to give this album justice. Terms like masterpiece, innovation, catalyst, originality, come to mind. If you dont own this album then you've yet to own hip hip. One.

Different singer, different sound..........2007-05-31

This is how "bloodbound" is defined on the band's label:

A term that originates from the dark ages when men would make an oath to each other called "blood oath" where they would cut their hands and then shake, mixing the blood. Each man then carries the other's blood, linking the two, like blood brothers. A bloodbound can never be broken and will follow you into the afterlife and beyond...

After their amazing debut album Nosferatu with Urban Breed, Bloodbound went through several vocalist changes, from former Memento Mori and Wuthering Heights singer Kristian Andren (so funny considering Breed had replaced Andren in Tad Morose), to The Storyteller's Johan Sohlberg, and Baltimoore's Jorgen Andersson. Finally though, German-born Michael Bormann got the gig. You might remember him from bands like Jaded Heart and Rain if you enjoy melodic hard rock with ample doses of AOR thrown in. Bormann has a deep, unique voice that becomes particularly haunting on the more laidback, ballady material. Bloodbound is possibly his first attempt at singing power metal, and as much as I like him as a singer, the songs aren't suited that well to his style. That said, he had no part in writing any of these pieces; he just filled in at the last minute and recorded the vocal parts -- given that, he's done a great job.

Book of the Dead unlike its predecessor stays safely in a more European power metal vibe, utilising less keyboards, and building on fast twin guitar harmonies, loud double bass drums (with new drummer Pelle Akerlind), and mostly catchy, melodic choruses. Some of the songs are quite alike with their wordless backing harmonies on pieces like "The Tempter", "Black Shadows", and "Flames of Purgatory", perhaps the only song that breaks the flow of the otherwise homogenous album. This one is nicely decorated with a folky vocal melody a la Wuthering Heights, some nice acoustic parts, a nifty lead solo, and the expected harmony vocals murmuring the main melody without using any lyrics. In a live setting, they will surely get the crowds going, but three songs based on alike ideas on the same CD is getting a bit excessive.

Given Bormann's background, there are also some more hard rock-styled pieces: "Lord of Battle" is like power metal sung by a great, Lande-like vocalist while the chorus of "Turn to Stone" will be glued to your mind for days. The acoustic ballad "Black Heart" showcases how amazing a singer Bormann really is, evoking bands like the underrated Norwegian rockers Return as well as Push and his former acts. The album hides its longest piece "Seven Angels" in track eleven, starting with a slick acoustic bit and building to a mesmerizing melodic metal staple with cool rhythm shifts. While the musicianship is still tight, the amount of guitar leads and driving bass crescendos have seen a significant drop, perhaps in order to fit the more direct, in-your-face styles of the songs.

Time will show how Bloodbound will do without Breed at the helm, and some may be disappointed at the lack of variety put on offer on this disc, but by its own standards, Book of the Dead is still worthy of a listen.
