The Cult has made it safe to head-bang again with their first disc of new material since 1994. After penning 60 new songs, the reconstituted band went into the studio with longtime producer Bob Rock to chisel their brand of hard-rock bombast into the lean, mean dozen songs found here. Falling somewhere between the raw power of
Electric and the sophisticated message and melody of
Sonic Temple,
Beyond Good and Evil pairs Ian Astbury's lofty themes of temptation and spiritual regeneration with Billy Duffy's fierce guitar attack and a antediluvian rhythm section that recalls the days when dinosaurs ruled the earth. Hard-won spiritual battles color the sometimes nightmarish lyrics on songs such as "American Gothic" and the spooky "Ashes and Ghost," but just when you're about to reach for the light switch to banish the shadows, he sings a simple love song to the late and sometimes great chanteuse Nico.

THE CULT RISES FROM THE ASHES.......2007-07-02
This is a great power house album/CD of molten heavy metal refined to
the purest gold escence. Ian Astbury is one of the chosen great vocalists
of Classic Rock. He still delivers on this CD, a rock siren who shatters
the air waves. I rank him right up there with Robert Plant, Ian Gillen,
Bruce Dickinson, and Geoff Tate. Every song shows maturity, without
stretching his vocal range-- Ian can still put it out there.
Billy Duffy is a very under rated guitarist- he creates a wall of
sound, melodic or a metal undertow, at his beckoning. Beyond Good And
Evil stacks up with their greatest body of work, as good as Love or
Sonic Temple. This is a great rock CD, that deserved better air play.
My favorite tracks are: Take The Power, Nico, American Gothic,
Shape The Sky, and True Believers. The Cult made a come back album
with merit. Other bands reform and fall flat on their backs, The Cult
show that they can still deliver the goods. Long live rock n roll.
Destroyed by Mastering.......2007-06-23
The music on this disk has been destroyed by lousy mastering. it is way too loud. There is so much compression and clipping that that drums have zero punch and rest sound like a wall: totally flat and without dynamics. Sure it will sound ok in car driving on the highway, or a pair of portable headphones next to a road. But listen to this thing in a quiet environment with half decent equipment and your skin will crawl. I am not surprised that this record tanked, it was mastered that badly. Although, if you haven't heard a horridely mastered cd sounds like (if, for example you listen to classical music/Jazz), then this is a good example of crap. Or you could try the '97 reissue of Raw Power or Californication by the Chilis.
And its not surprising. The band wanted to sound the loudest they could. Well today that means wrecking your music, because every rock album is already way too loud to begin with. So to go even farther, well it's sure loud but crappy.
Oh and if you don't know what I'm talking about, google loudness war or race. There is a good vid on youtube about it. Then vist the Steve Hoffman forums.
you have been warned.
Great album can't wait till the next one!.......2007-05-22
Great album, heavy riffs, great enchanting lyrics and amazing vocals. GO CULT!
Stunning Halloween Metal.......2006-10-21
Hey folks, what can I say? What a moron i've been for passing this one by....mostly just because I was in the middle of raising my family, but thats enough about me. I am stunned by the sheer brillance of this album! I've been a fan since forever, and honestly I think Sonic Temple had been my fav up until last night. I finally listened to this CD in full (for the first time if you can believe it!). What put me in the mood to do that? Well I have the DVD they put out in 2001 (Music without fear) and as many of you may know that is one bad-a@@ DVD (except for Ian's vocal problems on a few songs). What makes that DVD so amazing? The sheer heaviness, that's what. I noticed a Sabbath like grind almost immediately on that DVD, and I was stunned that the cult could just sit in that heavy groove for almost an hour and a half. Of course, I wondered what Cult CD the heaviest grooves were from...To make a long story short, I'm stunned at the impact this album has had on me. Not since the first time I heard Sabbath Vol. IV, have I reacted in such a way to pure Dark Metal like this:) WOW!!!!These guys have a brilliant album here, this album puts them right up with the best of Rock and Roll and Dark Metal at its absolute best. Great work Ian, Billy and the rest of the gang:) Keep on putting this kind of Rock out, please, please, please:)
Ear Splitting.......2006-10-17
This is probably one of the best raunchy rock and roll cd's in a long time. The Cult went out with style. There are few weak songs but it is all hard for the most part. I like the style of darkness that is here

LIved Up To The Hype.......2007-02-25
When I first bought this cd a sticker on the cd said "The most anticapated cd of the year!". They were right! A tremendous heavy hard rocker - period. What was the most amazing thing about it was that it was such a great leap in a different direction.
Total syncapation with booming leads and powerhouse vocals (you'd expect less there). It still sits near my cd player and when I feel like getting down and dirty it goes in.
Rise (a huge rocker)and Bridges Burn are my 2 favorites - but the whole cd is killer.
After taking time off, they don't skip a beat.......2007-01-11
Amazing CD that rocks beginning to end. If you prefer their post-Electric albums, this ranks up there with Sonic Temple.

Messy punks play rock and blues. Ugliness prevails........2002-04-26
This is a very sloppy compilation which somehow seems to work by default. The cheap, amateurish cover art is a pretty good indicator of what pub rock was like in Sydney in the late 80's to early 90's. Very authentic grunge like this is way too dangerous to be accepted now in the early naughties.
The crude vocals an screaming guitars are applied to all songs here, however its not predictable formula. Its more like an attitude.
This CD has limited appeal in these days of slick sounds. The "Beasts of Bourbon's" Black Milk is more up to date with the times.
Beasts of Brilliance.......2002-01-12
do yourself a favour. discover beasts of bourbon. start with this collecion, then go nuts and get yourself the compleat collection of a band with balls, brilliance, f--k you attitude and more musical chops than the ealy (and late) Stones.

it's about damn time!.......1999-12-22
Beasts Of Bourbon at their best is like choking on the best piece of steak you;ve ever had & shunning all attempts to save you, so that you can savor it. Given the difficulty, in the US anyway, obtaining their releases & the high prices, this cd is a must. From the moment they debuted with Axeman's Jazz in the early 80's, this band has rarely dissapointed. That's quite an accomplishment, given their incredible diversity. You will be sold from the first song, Psycho, on through to the end. The numerous line up changes over the years have done little to compromise the overall effect of The Beasts. No one would agree on twenty songs for a Beasts compilation, but this is a nice one. The only glaring omissions are Love & Death(Axeman's Jazz), The Hate Inside(Sour Mash), & Ride On(The Low Road). A decade and a half of brilliance is captured here. From punk to funk to blues to straight up rock to just plain bizarre, all of the elements that made Tex & co. so inimitable are running rampant throughout. If you have nothing on cd, this is the place to start. If you are fortunate enough to own all their discs, then this is still a must. Their are albums are so different from one another that this is the only collection that can satisfy any mood. Highlights include Psycho(The Axeman's Jazz), Hard For You/ Door To Your Soul(Sour Mash), Cool Fire/Words From A Woman To Her Man/Execution Day(Black Milk), Low Road/Can't Say No/Goodbye Friends(The Low Road),& Saturated(Gone). I don't know why Axeman's Jazz isn't properly represented, but the oversight is certainly forgivable. The live 5-song bonus disc isn't much more than a novelty. They didn't need to throw in any extras to satisfy me, but it's a cool addition to any Beasts collection. The liner notes and many photos complete an already wonderful package. After your Beasts collection is complete, go find Tex, Don & Charlie's MONDAY MORNING COMING DAY & The Cruel Sea's THE HONEYMOON IS OVER. Tex Perkins' solo album, FAR BE IT FROM ME, is also great. This band is incredible. How many underground punk bands had the guts to cover Merle Haggard? Get your fix ASAP, as their cds don't stay in circulation long. Beasts Of Bourbon are truly Australia's greatest export!

EXTREME NEW CULT.......2001-09-21
This album is without a doubt, the best Cult album of all time. The intensity of these songs are unbelievable. From the start with "War(The Process)" to "My Bridges Burn" this album can be put on repeat to listen over and over again. The song "Niko" is a classic ballad that the CULT have seem to perfected. I recomend this album for not just CULT fans, but for everybody that loves Rock@Roll. THE CULT FAN
