Sloan stake out their usual turf--a piece of emotional land somewhere on the border of knowingness and bemusement--on Between the Bridges. Their most ambitious yet, the album cleverly strings one track into the next while marshaling a full complement of early-'70s pop-rock influences (Todd Rundgren, Badfinger). The result is as creamy ("Don't You Believe a Word") and cutting ("Friendship") at times as Rumours; for good measure, there's the tear-away tour de force "Sensory Deprivation" and the echoes of Imagine that open "The N.S." In an age where few bands make it this far--Bridges is their sixth long-player, counting 1998's live 4 Nights at the Palais Royale--Sloan reaffirm their power with each new release. With any luck, this one will make more listeners outside their Canadian homeland aware of that fact. --Rickey Wright

Album Description

This songwriter and mother of four, who lives a stones throw from the town she grew up in, doesn't fit into any stereotype. She's garnered comparisons to Lucinda Williams, Bruce Springsteen, Dashboard Confessional, and Roseanne Cash. Her songs, as solid as Georgia oak, are played and sung with an emotional grit under the nails that comes from digging in life's mundane and less illuminated holes. These songs grab you with Lori's signature strident, soulful, and unapologetic vocals sharing earnest observations and stories of growing up and growing old, of loves and losses, winners and losers, guns and god, and drinkers and dreamers in a town that is resting uncomfortably between its blue collar roots and modern suburbia. Incapable of artifice, Lori McKenna speaks of the bitter and the sweet, but doesn't simply write songs, she documents her life, and in turn ours, in word and melody. Meet Lori McKenna and welcome to Bittertown

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Lyrics.......2006-11-22

I went out and purchased Lori McKenna's 'Bittertown' last year after hearing songs she wrote on Faith Hill's 'Fireflies'. This is an incredible album, definitely one of the best that I bought in 2005. She has an interesting voice and beautiful lyrics, particularly on "Bible Song", "Stealing Kisses", "The Ledge" and "Cowardly Lion". While Faith Hill (on "Stealing Kisses" and "If You Ask", etc.) and Sara Evans (on "Bible Song") sing McKenna's songs very well on their latest albums, there's no comparison to the original, though Hill does a great job on 'Fireflies'. McKenna's voice is not at all over the top or showy and it fits the songs she sings in a very pure and simple way. I would highly recommend this album, and others by this artist, to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Living American Singer Songwriter.......2006-06-04

And I say this based on hearing a single song ("Pour") from from a Putumayo World Music collection "American Folk". On that basis, I am going to buy the album, and I hope you will too, she truly deserves it. Emotions are conveyed intimately and harrowingly with a warm and very beautifully real voice, with her special twist and modulation. Lyrics are original, raw, and sometimes surprising with an insight that becomes much more apparent when you hear her sing: "In the depths of the deepest sea, there is a blue as blue as me, where a quiet symphony plays for the lonley, I could just let it all go, sink down to the world below, where i dont breathe but I dont know cause I am breathless" (and then follows a wonderful musical follow up which greatly amplifies the feelings). The music is beautiful, very appropriate, and carefully crafted.

5 out of 5 stars Solid, gritty, and a good listen.......2006-03-30

This is my first Lori McKenna album. While a sample of her songs and the comparisons got my attention, I'd say she compares to herself. She's got a stepped up-bluegrass kind of sound and the gritty, solid voice that made many of country's greats who they are. "Bittertown" is hard to classify and even harder to get out of your CD player. Give it a listen, I think you'll agree Lori's someone whose words are worth hearing.

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite CD for studying!.......2006-01-29

I LOVE this CD. I listen to it often while studying - the album flows wonderfully...I find it hard to compare to anyone else, though I am a big fan of Alison Krauss, the Wailin Jennys, and the like, if that tells you anything.

Buy it! You won't be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars An Instant Classic.......2006-01-05

Lori McKenna has a grit to her lyrics and vocals that harken back to the greats of country like Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard. She also has the sort of lyrical imagery, roughshod vocals and sad songs that beg to be compared to Lucinda Williams. She is all this and more.
The album opens strongly with the driving desperation of small town escape that is "Bible Song," which still manages to pause briefly to show us a moment of her offbeat view of the world when she pauses in the middle of describing her a cousins's suicide to ponder "and how does she explain to those kids about the sorry thing Daddy did." "Stealing Kisses" plays like a prequel to John Prines classic "Angel From Montgomery." However, possibly the strongest moment on the cd is the spectrum spanning tales of addiction "If You Ask" and "Monday Afternoon." Lest you think all is gloom and doom however, McKenna proves she can do the lighter end of the register, with the confectiony sweet "Mr. Sunshine." The only weak note is the immature "Lone Star" but it is lyrically spot on and McKenna takes such relish in advising her old classmate "tell the girls in the beer line/that you're an old, good friend of mine" that it ranks, at worst, as a guitly pleasure.
Lori McKenna is one of the best voices to come on the scene in a long time--both as a singer and a writer.

5 out of 5 stars Quite simply one of the best albums I own.......2005-06-03

I don't know that much about Sloan (other than what can be gleaned at Amazon.com) but this is a stunningly good album. Not a stinker in the dozen songs. Kind of 70s rock with a contemporary sensibility. Good vocals, crunchy guitars, electric pianos, catchy tunes. I have trouble thinking of individual songs on this disc, 'cause they all fit together so well. Seriously, my favorite is probably Marquee and the Moon, or it's Take Good Care of the Poor Boy, or its Delivering Maybes, because the album finishes so strongly, but any one of the tracks could be a favorite. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars concept album? .......2004-07-29

This is different than any other sloan album, the album stars with 3 very mellow songs, which makes you wonder, is this how its gonna be? But "friendship" kicks and you hear sloan doing what they do best, ROCK(that was cheesy). All of the songs flow into eachother extremely well.
Key tracks: N.S, friendship, sensory deprivation, losing california, take good care of the poor boy
GREAT ALBUM, GREAT BAND

4 out of 5 stars Sloan are originally Canadian, like moi :).......2004-04-27

Losing California is an addictive song, I've listened to it more times than I care to admit! Sloan is one of those bands deeply influenced by classic rock from the 60's and 70's, and they do that style VERY well. They also have the Beatles hair goin' on. :)

5 out of 5 stars The story of Sloan's career.......2003-07-29

I hate to say this but even many 'hardcore' Sloan fans dismiss this record. Why I cannot imagine. It is the perfect analagy for their career. It's between the pop of Navy Blues and the rock of Pretty Together. This is Sloan's 2nd most solid album. Their is growth and maturity oozing from this record with out boring us to death.
The NS is a classic Andrew song with even more clever humor and a bit more pop than what he normally delivers
The Marquee and the moon is Chris Murphys "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds".. on this album and Pretty Together Chris has really grown up and shown some vunerability as well.
Losing California is a great ROCK song with pop singability as it gets stuck in your heard, all day.. it's fantastic.
Waiting for Slow Songs is another great one by Jay that really makes you feel , he's a master at expressing his personal insecurity which we then take on as our own, too.

There has been alot of talk about "california" albums lately and I think this is a great one if that is your cup o' tea. It's a tiny bit beach boys, BUT definetly ALL SLOAN!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!.......2003-07-02

This is a great CD for any music fan and a must-have for any fan of Sloan. The great songs just keep on coming from beginning to end. The whole CD just seems to flow with one track literally blending into the next. This is a softer smoother sounding album than their "One Chord to Another" or "Smeared" albums. That's not to say though, that the album doesn't have some great rock hits. "Sensory Deprivation" and "Losing California" are a couple of great examples of this. The second track "So Beyond Me" is the best song I've ever heard to date. It is one of the few albums I own that I don't have even the slightest urge to hit the "next track" button on my CD player. Buy this album... you'll be glad you did.

      Album Description

"With echoes as old as the Carter Family and as fresh as any of the new traditional country, "Brand New Old Time Music" is exactly what its title implies, and it is a pure joy. The album's 12 songs... are intelligent, witty and touching, and need no more instrumental embellishment than simple, lovely acoustic settings. Grey's voice has a bluesy edge somewhat reminiscent of Maria Muldaur, with a gentle, angelic quality that harkens to early Dolly Parton. She also keeps some pretty hip company... Wynonna Judd sings harmony with Grey on two songs, and Ranger Doug of Riders in the Sky joins her on another. John Hartford lends his distinctive banjo to the effort, and multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire Albert Lee plays mandolin and guitar. All turn in fine performances , and their names surely strengthen her resume, but Grey's talent stands squarely on it's own."

5 out of 5 stars An absolute joy from start to finish.......2007-02-27

Sloan come from Halifax,Nova Scotia,Canada. The band consists of four highly talented singers, songwriters and multi-instrumentalists. I challenge anyone to name me a band out there since the Beatles who have that level of diversity. This album is a pleasure from start to finish. The songs run into one another. It's the first time that Sloan have done this on an album. It gives the album a coherence. That is not to say though that the songs are all similar. They are definitely not. The songs are as different from one another as is possible. My personal favourites are 'Don't Believe A Word' by Jay Ferguson and 'Friendship' by Patrick Pentland. All of the songs are outstanding. This album is a must for fans of Todd Rundgren, Beatles, Raspberries, 10cc and other power pop outfits.

If Every Time I Die and Hatebreed (circa Under the Knife/Satisfaction is the Death of Desire) got married and had children, they would name it To This Day. Trashy riffing, sludgey breakdowns mixed with a tough guy hardcore edge pretty much sums up this album. Nothing earth shattering here but if you dig tough guy hardcore, you'll need this album.

5 out of 5 stars My first great listening experience of the new year.......2005-01-08

Eyvind Kang and Tucker Martine have known each other for quite a while. In light of the spectacular music they make on this remarkable disc, the only question is this: Why did it take them so long to record together?

Kang, long a member of Bill Frisell's quartet, has a unique approach to his primary instrument, the violin. Not only does he get an astounding variety of sounds from it, he also has a knack for playing it in a faux-naive way that humanizes its sometimes harsh timbre and imbues it with a warmth and eerie beauty uniquely his. With a handful of outrageous solo discs to his credit, including such weirdness as The Sweetness of Sickness and Theater of Mineral NADEs, he has carved out a niche in contemporary improvised music completely his own.

Tucker Martine, long associated with Wayne Horvitz (see esp. their latest, Mylab), but also the production genius behind artists like Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter, Laura Veirs, Down Pilot, and Sanford Arms, as well as heading up the sound collage project Mount Analog, is fast becoming one of the most in-demand sound-sculptors working in the biz today.

Together they've created one of the most beguiling, intriguing, and just plain weird discs out there. Ranging in styles as diverse as demented pop to outré electronica--and nearly everything in between--Orchestra Dim Bridges presents a constantly shifting soundscape of staggering diversity. Yet, strangely, several unifying threads unite these disparate materials: the lads' propensity for purely gorgeous melodies, a wacky world-percussive sensibility, dreamy, ocean floor/blasted heath moods, and the seamless assimilation and appropriation of the wildest assortment of world musics conceivable.

Anyone taken with some of Frisell's latest projects, Mylab, Dhafer Youssef, Critters Buggin, and Garage a Trois should waste no time in picking this up. Others with big ears will also want to give a listen.

      Highest recommendation.

A fine hybrid of many '70s pop/rock stylings, sequenced together in a "medley" form, a la Beatles' Abbey Road. Don't expect to be 'wowed', but this is a very entertaining album. The boys from Halifax deliver.

Omar Lopez and his band are on the cutting edge of something great. Taking from inspirations in various ethnic and world-style musics, and borrowed at times from the influence of Yanni, Omar's class and style put forth a very pleasing project. The songs are energetic and punchy, with plenty of electronic beats to provide the driving rhythm for his stunning violin solos.

This album is a must have. His live performances are phenomenal, and there's always a line to purchase one of his CDs. Guaranteed to impress.

BEST OF SEVEN's Everything is New Again EP heralds the arrival of a naturally gifted band that places as much emphasis on songwriting smarts and brotherhood of the band as they do on flat out rock n' roll. Recorded at the world-famous Cherokee studios (Jimmy Eats World, Queens of the Stone Age, the Lemonheads, Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith, David Bowie, amongst others) Everything is New Again celebrates the magic of tight bonds, loose morals, and a summer in anywhere-but-here, small town middle America.
