Editorial Reviews
Sloan stake out their usual turf--a piece of emotional land somewhere on the border of knowingness and bemusement--on Between the Bridges. Their most ambitious yet, the album cleverly strings one track into the next while marshaling a full complement of early-'70s pop-rock influences (Todd Rundgren, Badfinger). The result is as creamy ("Don't You Believe a Word") and cutting ("Friendship") at times as Rumours; for good measure, there's the tear-away tour de force "Sensory Deprivation" and the echoes of Imagine that open "The N.S." In an age where few bands make it this far--Bridges is their sixth long-player, counting 1998's live 4 Nights at the Palais Royale--Sloan reaffirm their power with each new release. With any luck, this one will make more listeners outside their Canadian homeland aware of that fact. --Rickey Wright

Album Description
This songwriter and mother of four, who lives a stones throw from the town she grew up in, doesn't fit into any stereotype. She's garnered comparisons to Lucinda Williams, Bruce Springsteen, Dashboard Confessional, and Roseanne Cash. Her songs, as solid as Georgia oak, are played and sung with an emotional grit under the nails that comes from digging in life's mundane and less illuminated holes. These songs grab you with Lori's signature strident, soulful, and unapologetic vocals sharing earnest observations and stories of growing up and growing old, of loves and losses, winners and losers, guns and god, and drinkers and dreamers in a town that is resting uncomfortably between its blue collar roots and modern suburbia. Incapable of artifice, Lori McKenna speaks of the bitter and the sweet, but doesn't simply write songs, she documents her life, and in turn ours, in word and melody. Meet Lori McKenna and welcome to BittertownCustomer Reviews:

An Instant Classic.......2006-01-05
The album opens strongly with the driving desperation of small town escape that is "Bible Song," which still manages to pause briefly to show us a moment of her offbeat view of the world when she pauses in the middle of describing her a cousins's suicide to ponder "and how does she explain to those kids about the sorry thing Daddy did." "Stealing Kisses" plays like a prequel to John Prines classic "Angel From Montgomery." However, possibly the strongest moment on the cd is the spectrum spanning tales of addiction "If You Ask" and "Monday Afternoon." Lest you think all is gloom and doom however, McKenna proves she can do the lighter end of the register, with the confectiony sweet "Mr. Sunshine." The only weak note is the immature "Lone Star" but it is lyrically spot on and McKenna takes such relish in advising her old classmate "tell the girls in the beer line/that you're an old, good friend of mine" that it ranks, at worst, as a guitly pleasure.
Lori McKenna is one of the best voices to come on the scene in a long time--both as a singer and a writer.

The story of Sloan's career.......2003-07-29
The NS is a classic Andrew song with even more clever humor and a bit more pop than what he normally delivers
The Marquee and the moon is Chris Murphys "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds".. on this album and Pretty Together Chris has really grown up and shown some vunerability as well.
Losing California is a great ROCK song with pop singability as it gets stuck in your heard, all day.. it's fantastic.
Waiting for Slow Songs is another great one by Jay that really makes you feel
There has been alot of talk about "california" albums lately and I think this is a great one if that is your cup o' tea. It's a tiny bit beach boys, BUT definetly ALL SLOAN!
A Must Have!.......2003-07-02

Album Description
"With echoes as old as the Carter Family and as fresh as any of the new traditional country, "Brand New Old Time Music" is exactly what its title implies, and it is a pure joy. The album's 12 songs... are intelligent, witty and touching, and need no more instrumental embellishment than simple, lovely acoustic settings. Grey's voice has a bluesy edge somewhat reminiscent of Maria Muldaur, with a gentle, angelic quality that harkens to early Dolly Parton. She also keeps some pretty hip company... Wynonna Judd sings harmony with Grey on two songs, and Ranger Doug of Riders in the Sky joins her on another. John Hartford lends his distinctive banjo to the effort, and multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire Albert Lee plays mandolin and guitar. All turn in fine performances , and their names surely strengthen her resume, but Grey's talent stands squarely on it's own."Gordon Ely, Richmond - Times-Dispatc

Customer Reviews:
My first great listening experience of the new year.......2005-01-08
Kang, long a member of Bill Frisell's quartet, has a unique approach to his primary instrument, the violin. Not only does he get an astounding variety of sounds from it, he also has a knack for playing it in a faux-naive way that humanizes its sometimes harsh timbre and imbues it with a warmth and eerie beauty uniquely his. With a handful of outrageous solo discs to his credit, including such weirdness as The Sweetness of Sickness and Theater of Mineral NADEs, he has carved out a niche in contemporary improvised music completely his own.
Tucker Martine, long associated with Wayne Horvitz (see esp. their latest, Mylab), but also the production genius behind artists like Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter, Laura Veirs, Down Pilot, and Sanford Arms, as well as heading up the sound collage project Mount Analog, is fast becoming one of the most in-demand sound-sculptors working in the biz today.
Together they've created one of the most beguiling, intriguing, and just plain weird discs out there. Ranging in styles as diverse as demented pop to outré electronica--and nearly everything in between--Orchestra Dim Bridges presents a constantly shifting soundscape of staggering diversity. Yet, strangely, several unifying threads unite these disparate materials: the lads' propensity for purely gorgeous melodies, a wacky world-percussive sensibility, dreamy, ocean floor/blasted heath moods, and the seamless assimilation and appropriation of the wildest assortment of world musics conceivable.
Anyone taken with some of Frisell's latest projects, Mylab, Dhafer Youssef, Critters Buggin, and Garage a Trois should waste no time in picking this up. Others with big ears will also want to give a listen.
Highest recommendation.
