With songs as sharp as their looks, Jonathan Fire*Eater are poised to shake things up on their debut, Wolf Songs for Lambs. Relying on the Kinks, Rolling Stones, the Who, and Dave Clark Five for their musical references, JF*E add their own tales from the circus of urban horrors. Singer Stewart Lupton turns more than one clever phrase, and his delivery of songs like "These Little Monkeys" can whip a song into a wicked hip-shaker. "Station Coffee" has Lupton doing his best Jagger, while "When the Curtain Calls for You" casts a chilling tone, thanks to the whirling fog of a Farfisa organ. Jonathan Fire*Eater may take their cues from the British Invasion, but Wolf Songs shows they've got enough imagination to raise themselves above the wave of cheap imitations. --Steve Gdula

5 out of 5 stars An excellent album.......2005-08-19

Being a Walkmen fan, I decided to check this CD out, as it is incredibly cheap. I was not disappointed one bit. A Velet Underground-type sound with ? and the Mysterians-like organ makes for a very enjoyable listen. It probably should be rated 4.5 stars, but I rounded up. Sue me.

I also agree that this band was ahead of its time. Had this come out in '02, I have no doubt that Fire*Eater would have been the indie rock craze. Alas, 'twas not to be. Buy this album today. It's well, well worth the $4. The opening organ note on "I've Changed Hotels" is worth $4 on its own.

5 out of 5 stars Superb, not Pretty Good...........2004-11-08

"Pretty Good, but not superb..., June 19, 1999
Reviewer: A music fan"

I was just checking to see if this was still in-print, since Walkmen have been doing ok for themselves.

Wolf Songs For Lambs was WAY WAY ahead of it's time. You could have release this record one year ago and seen every trendy indie wearing a JFE shirt, and the drummer would have been dating Drew also. The songs "blend" - so what? They don't get lost between tracks. To me, they were doing what The Strokes were aiming to do. The only difference is JFE has a nice Rolling Stones' Exile On Main Street vibe and their guitar changes in some songs are very interesting decisions. Most great records need a couple times to listen to before you get the greatness - this is one of them, no doubt.......Oh, the reviewer that mentioned the band PULP...they are about as deep as a kid's pool. That band is very girly.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, but not superb..........1999-06-19

I got this CD for 1.99 at the local CD warehouse. It's a fun CD to listen to while reading or talking on the phone, but all the songs start to blend after awhile, and the lyrics get a little mashed up...I do love "When the Curtain Calls You" and "This is My Room". I'm not sorry I have the album, I just think you should wait until it goes on sale to buy it. For some deep rock, check out PULP or the Boo Radleys.

4 out of 5 stars hauntingly offbeat songs that make you smile as they roll.......1999-06-14

I first heard this cd about a year ago and after listening to the first track I had already decided that it needed to be added to my collection. I have not heard anything since then that has even compared to this cd. One also has to admit that the shrillness of some of their songs does grow old after a while but, on the same note, after another while I find that I can put the cd back in and listen to it with the same enthusiasm as when I first bought it. Jonathon Fire Eater is definitely a unique band and sound that deserves an ear. It may grow on you.

4 out of 5 stars the best album of their career.......1999-03-28

"wolf songs" is by far the catchiest, most 'complete' sounding thing jf*e has released. unlike the lethargic music and coarse lyrics of their early stuff this album takes up where "tremble under boomlights" left off, stepping everything up twofold. instantly catchy yet after a while it loses some of its glamor.
