Aging has a way of focusing the mind, especially when long-held expectations go unmet. After 10+ years of laboring in the Seattle music scene and producing a few small-scale releases (2003's Gravity Gets Things Done the best among them), cousins Gabe Archer and Cameron Nicklaus went simple. They underwent a legally-enforced name change (previously, they were just "The Pale"), took their rhythm section and holed up in an island-bound cabin with an eight-track, hoping the physical and technological isolation would result in an epiphany. Despite its lo-fi origins, Urgency is certainly the best they've ever sounded on record, no doubt in part to the mixing talents of Death Cab For Cutie's Chris Walla. That Pale Pacific sound more than a little like Walla's band is thus perhaps not surprising, but that's too easy a comparison. The record is haunted by a similar intuition, a familiar, bitter sweetness, but it's also guided by larger-than-life melodies (see "If Only She'd Leave Town") that spring more readily, like Matthew Sweet or even Big Star. Archer and Nicklaus linger long in those melodies, whether drowning in reverb (on "The Strangest Second Chance") or melancholy (on the Damien Rice-like closer "Fall To Place"). It's not quite an epiphany, but Urgency is at least hard-won progress. Often that's the best one can hope for. –Matthew Cooke

Product Description
Orcas Island - just off the coast of Seattle. Holed up in a rented house during the fall of 2004, The Pale Pacific focused on recording an entirely new set of material to an analog 8-track tape machine and had the ability to do so without outside distractions — no mail, no cell phone reception and no Internet connection. During their three-week stay, they managed to record 15 songs, some of which ended up on the "Rules Are Predictable" EP. The rest of the session’s cuts were sequenced and placed on the band’s fourth full-length, Urgency. The resulting recordings are raw, uninhibited and offer The Pale Pacific at their most intimate. The band left environmental sounds in — cars driving by, airplanes flying overhead, a dryer or washer that’s left on — which makes the recordings of Urgency that much more honest, at least on a sonic level. With Urgency’s tracking finalized, The Pale Pacific enlisted Death Cab For Cutie’s Chris Walla to mix selected tracks for the album. And if the artwork appears familiar, that’s because The Pale Pacific’s latest features the creative visuals of Grammy award nominated artist Jesse LeDoux (whose work includes album covers for Elliott Smith, Hot Hot Heat and The Shins).

Album Description

K'naan, former refugee, now based in Toronto makes music that is a mixture of hip hop, African beats and world music intertwined - combining African drums, chants, handclaps, guitars and organic instrumentation sets this album outside the hip hop herd. K'naan creates music with a message. Leaving Somalia at the age of thirteen on what turned out to be the last commercial flight ever to do so, amidst a crumbling society and the end to this day of any form of central government K'naan carried with him a very strong sense of purpose as well as his amazing lyrical gift, which has made him a beacon for other artists a well as those dedicated to global change. Canada only release! With his unique voice and truly authentic style, K'naan brings an enormous dose of realness and urgency to the hip-hop world in a time when people are desperate for it. From a personal and cultural history rooted in poetry (being the grandson of one of Somalia's most famous poets), K'naan widens the traditional hip-hop perspective. Discovered and produced by Track & Field, same producers that discovered and produced Nelly Furtado, Dusty Foot Philosopher is comprised of 18 total tracks including 'Smile', 'My Old Home', 'In The Beginning', 'Voices In My Head', 'Wash It Down', 'Hoobaale', 'Rap Gets Jealous' and more. BMG. 2005.

Album Details

Negotiating his Way Forcefully Through a Gritty Sandstorm of Spoken-word and African Instrumental Interludes, K'naan Brings Us a Collection of Funky, Original Backgrounds Nearly as Weighty as the Cautionary Words that Float above Them. In his Liner Notes, K'naan Recounts a Nearly Fatal Incident Involving a Live Grenade which He and a Couple of his School Friends Discovered in their Classroom in Mogadishu, Somalia. While Playing with the Mysterious Object, which Initially Looked Like a Potato, the Grenade's Pin Slipped. Throwing it as Fast and as Far as He Could, the Destructive Object Lay to Ruin Much of the Empty Building. Thankfully, No One was Hurt. Then Only Ten Years Old, K'naan (Whose Name Means "The Traveller" in Somalian) Credits that Event as the Watershed Moment which Led Him to Become a Writer.

5 out of 5 stars Addictive and thought-provoking.......2007-07-07

Everyone will have their own opinion, but in my opinion (which is the best! : * ) this is the best CD I've purchased in a long time. If you like Arrested Development, Donnie, Stevie Wonder, India Arie or anybody who's not just singing or rapping for the sake of filling airtime, you'll love it. In The Beginning makes me dance, Hoobaale makes my think and sing at the same time, and What's Hardcore makes me laugh at the stupidity of mainstream hip-hop "gangstas". I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Phenominal.......2006-12-16

I generally listen to reggae and have recently gotten into more Hip-hop and Rap. So, while I may not have the best perspective on this type of music, I will put it simply: this album blew me away. I really can't put my finger on it, but K'naan is fantastic. He is clever, angry, poetic, lyrical, and contemplative all at the same time. Besides the rythims, beats, etc., which are great, K'naan is able to give the listener a picture of whatever he's rhyming about, literally a picture in your mind. And, this is fundementally positive rap, hard to find no doubt, and it also makes you want to stand up a move around. I recommend this album to any fan of music, and I anxiously await K'naan's sophmore attempt.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing, innovative, dynamic.......2006-11-27

I normally don't go for hip hop and I hardly ever give 5 stars, but quality trumps genre any day, and this is some great stuff. Musically influenced by hip hop beats and his native Somalia, he manages to keep them successfully distinct. When he does merge them, it is with skill and style and wit. Too often merged styles end up sounding muddy, but not here.

The lyrics are poetic. He deals with some very serious subjects, but manages to inject humour and pragmatism without cheapening the message.

Finally, the album works well as a whole, not just a collection of songs, though you'll probably want to add some singles to your playlists.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Masterfull.......2006-10-19

I had a chance to see K'naan at the Breedlove Tour with Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Pharaoh Monche and Jean Grey and let me tell you he rocked the show. I had the chance to meet him after the show as he was selling his beautiful album at the back of the Fillmore in Denver and what a guy. Humble, kind, very down to earth. His music expresses the hardships of leaving his homeland and the unimaginable pain of living in modern day Somalia. His music expresses the frustration and anger about his homeland but also brings hope about the future, as well as awareness as most people especially in the U.S. have no idea what is going on over there because CNN and other corporate media just cover it as a rogue state. K'naan puts the human element in his music and expresses it beautifully. Great all around CD, original beats, lyrics, and well put together. Keep on fighting K'naan wherever you are.

5 out of 5 stars Overwhelmingly Beautiful and Poetic!.......2006-10-04

I'm an East African who grew up right over the border from Somalia and even then, I've never heard anyone say anything about Somalia other than rehashing CNN's point of view. It was always just a "messed up" place and nothing else. Finally this young brother speaks with such passion about the life and people that LIVE there...despite the turmoil and everything else there is LIFE and LOVE and K'Naan does such a phenomenal job getting that across. Listening to his tracks you can feel the pain, the frusteration, the hope...everything. He also acknowledges that just because he's no longer in a war-torn country doesn't automatically mean that life is great, a thought rarely discussed when it comes to refugees. It's often assumed and believed that we've done them all a great huge favor by removing them from their country...and while it's obviously better not to live under the fear of death, there's also the fact that generally people prefer to live in their home surroundings with the people they love and are familiar with. Migration, even to the lands of milk and honey in the west, is a HUGE sacrifice. Bravo K'Naan! This CD is a major contribution to Africa's history and to the masses whose thoughts and feelings are rarely acknowledged in an affirming an unbiased manner. An ESSENTIAL piece to anyone's library!

4 out of 5 stars Smooth!.......2006-02-13

This genre is not my usual cup of tea, in fact I drink coffee, lots of it, but that's not relevant unless you were thinking of sending me a gift. Anyway, this CD creeps up on you in a cozy snuggling manner, like when that massive dose of NyQuil kicks in and you are hazily transported to a very happy and very chill place where all feels fine. By the time "Tied to a Million Things" kicks in, you are awash in a big swirl of My Bloody Valentine orchestration with just enough guitar crunch for emphasis and edge. "Your Parent's House" is the most poppy and accessible and would fit perfectly on an episode of "The O.C." That's not a bust. The show stinks, but they do play some decent tunes (Walking Concert, anyone?) This song is a real beaut, the piano is exquisite and Gabe Archer's vocals are tailored to this type of rollicking ballad. His sensitive guy smooth yet innocent delivery is kind of a throwback; I could picture him fronting one of the bands featured on a John's Hughes soundtrack. Ducky would surely dig. Fans of The Get Up Kids, Matt Pond PA and Death Cab should warmly welcome this slow-build, emotional (not emo) rock into their bulging iPods.

4 out of 5 stars Walking the line between Album Leaf and Death Cab for Cutie.......2005-09-15

I was fortunate to hear "Tied to a Million Things" this morning on the way to work on a local college radio station (WPRK, in case you want to know). I loved The Pale Pacific's sound, so I checked them out. They remind me of Snow Patrol in some songs, though they sound like Death Cab for Cutie most of the time, which is not surprising, considering the participation of Chris Walla, from the legendary Seattle band, in the mixing of three of the songs.

Next thing you know, they throw in a soft electric piano (closing track and "Sucker Punch"), the same type you'd run into in an Album Leaf album. Or a mellow guitar that reminds of Mojave 3/Neil Halstead. Get the picture? These guys are blending in the sounds of the times, whether it's ambient, retro, indie or folk, and the final result is lovely. Highly recommendable band to keep an eye on.

5 out of 5 stars best yet.......2005-09-14

Having been introduced to the Pale Pacific (back when they were just The Pale) as a freshman at Western Washington University, I've been privileged to see a big part of their development. The personnel has changed a little, the name has changed a little, and they've gotten progressively better. Urgency is one of those CD's you can listen to over and over without getting tired of it, as there is always some new nuance to appreciate. Gabe Archer's voice is strong and sure when it needs to be and feeble and not so sure when it needs to be. The instrumentation is beautiful with "tied to a million things" an especial highlight. There's an energy throughout that surpasses their past albums. Those die a little before the end, Urgency keeps up the energy even if the tempo is slower- you can feel the emotion and pulse within the music, in the personal, yet universal lyrics. And that's about the best any band that puts themselves into their music can hope to do- make their personal experiences speak to others through the music. Urgency does that quite well, with some awesome musical moments and catchy pop hooks to boot.

5 out of 5 stars Bartok has met his match..........2004-04-02

Danielpour's Concerto for Orchestra is vibrant, refreshing, and musically intriguing. Even the most staunch critic cannot help but feel moved and invigorated by the driving rhythms, the playfully loquacious instrumental interactions, the heartfelt pathos, and the furious excitement displayed in all four movements of this phenomenal work.

Experience the Danielpour Concerto for Orchestra. It is an experience you will not forget.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting!.......2001-01-10

Pittsburgh and Danielpour are a winning combination! This American composer will end up filling the shoes of Copland and Bernstein as one of America's great composers. The Concerto for Orchestra dazzles, sparkles, dances, and weeps. The harmonies are complex and interesting, and yet very listenable. The Pittsburgh Symphony under Zinman has never sounded better. This is a must have for any proponent of 20th century music.

4 out of 5 stars Accessible and enjoyable........2000-12-05

Like Danielpour's other large orchestra works ("Celestial Night", "Urban Dances") the "Concerto for Orchestra" and "Anima Mundi" are vibrant and dynamic like Bartok and occasionally dark and somber like, maybe Shostokovitch. Both pieces on this recording are entertaining and masterfully performed and would make for very exciting works to be heard in concert; they are great examples of 20th Century American composition, accessible and enjoyable. However, the two pieces also sound similar and it is hard for me to tell where the "Concerto" ends and "Anima Mundi" begins - not because the composition of one is indistinguishable from the other but rather because both works are full-bodied orchestral works, rich with dynamics thus making them sound similar. Breaking up the two by inserting a small string serenade or soloist-oriented work between them would help differentiate the two major works. Still, a very good recording of exciting American music, heartily recommended to fans of Corigliano, Diamond, and Bartok's orchestral works.

5 out of 5 stars It is what Shostakovich would write today........1999-03-07

I heard this live, played by the Pacific Symphony Orchestra with the composer sitting next to me. I didn't want to look artificial so I was restrained in my enthusiasm, but I felt very much like I was hearing real classical music, something Shostakovich would write if he were here today. It is totally original, but if you need comparisons, it is Shostikovich with a sauce of Gershwin. It is the sound of New York and the angst of today's fragmented society. It is really great music! I am buying two CDs, one to send to my friends in Russia.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad.......1999-02-12

Danielpour is a brilliant craftsman and a fine writer. My only criticism of the album is that the two pieces tend to run together and are a bit indistinct from one another. He truly has a gift, but needs to push himself before lapsing into repetitiveness.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome westcoast sound!.......2005-11-18

Being a huge fan of artists like TOTO, Chicago, Richard Marx and so on this band was a pleasant discovery for me. Not because of the christian lyrics, since I'm not a religious person - but because of the big 80's sound of the music with lots of keyboards, guitars, and so on. Not to mention that the great Jeff Porcaro plays drums on the first 9 songs and Mike Landau plays guitar.
The songs are well-written, catchy and have lots of energy. The production and engineering is great and the vocal harmonies are beautiful.
A must-have for every fan of great late-80's Westcoast/AOR rock-pop!
