Something Good.......2007-03-11
This cd is amazing, if your in the mood for something different, something jazzy, this is the cd for you. It's a diamond in the rough.
Genuine emotion & feeling, coupled with pop craft.......2007-02-14
This album for me represents the perfect mix of expression with craft. Both the soul and the mind are nourished here, whether by deeply affecting vignettes of love & loss, or by seamlessly (though originally) constructed gems of songwriting.
Yes, it is pop music. That fact is unabashed and celebrated here, not accidental or clandestine. There will be naysayers aplenty who long only for Black Sabbath or Elvis Costello - the much-over-quoted but seldom well-explained "edge" in popular music. About them, I can only say: Beware all men who mention body parts in common conversation, or in Amazon reviews.
"Hear you got a new girlfriend, how's the wife takin' it?".......2005-12-13
What can I say? You either get this record or you don't...But, if you do get it, the rewards are plentiful indeed. Paddy McAloon's a complete badarse genius! Lovingly produced by Thomas Dolby, of "Hyperactive" fame...
A Fond Memory..........2005-10-30
Back in the mid to late 80's, Houston was blessed to have a local version of MTV, "Hit Video U.S.A." on a low frequency station (Channel 5) that aired videos by world renowned and up and coming artists and it was on this station that I first saw the clip for "Appetite", a soft-focus, gauzy, serene dreamscape that featured bandleader Paddy McAloon staring sincerely into the camera while intoning his heartbreaking lyrics of desire and loss. I've been enchanted with this bands work ever since. "Two Wheels Good" (known everywhere else as "Steve McQueen") is a brilliant slice of pop art that incorporates elements of jazz, barouque, chamber pop and rock with lyrics that are consistently heart-tugging without pandering or lapsing into self-loathing. These are precious songs about desire, loss and emptiness and not neccessarily how to get over them, but how to learn to live with them. "Beatlesque" in its since of melody and beautifully produced by Thomas Dolby ,"Two Wheels..." is an overlooked Brit Pop Masterpiece. Worth searching out.
What's all the fuss about?.......2005-06-22
Whiney, wimpy, nerdy, pop songs. Big deal. We hear this every day. Matchbox 21 or whatever their name is sounds like this, and they suck! Like the one guy wrote, it's Bryan Adams limey style. A few good songs, but no big deal. Have you people never listened to Miles Davis and Gil Evans? Mozart? Johnny Cash? Richard Thompson? Van Morrison? Joni Mitchell? Nina Simone? This word "genius" sure comes easy these days. It used to take Joyce, Melville, Nobel, C.V. Raman. Now we have Adam Sandler and Paddy Mcaloon. They don't have to rock out, but this record just has no balls. Geez!
