Thematically, director Robert Altman's career sometimes seems an endless series of left turns into the unexpected; the one constant has been a rich and rewarding attention to the intricacies of character development and interaction. Composer Patrick Doyle underscores Gosford Park's Merchant-Ivory/Agatha Christie/Altman-wit fusion and '30s British upper-class setting with a score that's period spot-on, character-rich, and often sadly evocative. Doyle's restraint is masterful, often leaning on piano, accordion, and small string arrangements that emphasize the characters' intimacies and the film's drawing room settings. Key to the story are a handful of prewar songs by Ivor Novello (who's also a character in the film), ranging from the sprightly humor of "And Her Mother Came Too" and "What a Duke Should Be" to the romantic schmaltz of "I Can Give You the Starlight" and "Why Isn't It You?" The latter is performed here at the piano (and, remarkably, live before the cameras) by Jeremy Northam. Leavened by a small jazz ensemble and a few darkly ominous cues, Doyle's score is an understated gem. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Gosford Park Sound Track.......2007-03-30
Better than the movie.......2004-12-08
Why is this music so compelling and winning?
First, it is fun to discover the marvellous talent of Ivor Norvello. His music is half of the charm of the soundtrack. Some songs are funny ("Her mother came too"), some beautiful ("I can give you the starlight") and some poignant ("The land of might have been"). I had not encountered Norvello before this film. Jeremy Northam's perfect delivery of Norvello's songs would not leave me after I'd seen the film. Days later, I found the songs had taken up residence in the back of my head, insisting that I go back to the soundtrack to make them a permanent part of my musical life.
Second, there is the charm of the orchestral music composed by Patrick Doyle. Sometimes people wonder "why aren't they writing beautiful classical music any more?" Well, they are. It goes into soundtracks, however, rather than being commissioned by orchestras. The test for the quality of Doyle's compositions is that you don't need to refer to the film to appreciate this music. It simply charms and intrigues us with its own merits.
My third reason for loving this CD is too personal to mention here.
I give this CD my highest personal recommendation.
I don't mind the repeating themes, but the CD is too short!.......2004-06-08
However, Mr. Doyle's music portrays the lethargy of the snobby Upstairs very well to the contrast of the relative energy of Novello's songs, which the Downstairs servants enjoy, but the Upstairs people can't stand.
My dislikes about the CD include the female singer who can't really sing and the length of the CD. Some of these cues are only about a minute long. WHY pay so much money for such a short CD??? Why not add more music??
Overall though, if you liked either Doyle's music or Novello's songs (hopefully the listener will like both), it's a CD worth getting.
Excellent Mix.......2003-04-23
Sometimes period music, sometimes mystery music, sometime personal music. Jeremy Northam's songs are simply delicious and I love hearing them.
I liken the style (not type) of mix to You've Got Mail.
Heaps of fun and lovely to listen to.
One the best soundtracks out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-03-06

The Smoke...THE BEST 60's GROUP .......2005-11-18
Excellent At Times.......2004-01-11
While the music is good quality throughout the album, the lyrics are often awkward and uninspired. The album opens with "My Friend Jack," and after hearing such sharp, surreal prose, the remaning lyrics on "It's Smoke Time" are a let down.
I get the notion that this group had good ideas for songs, but did not go the extra yards to really polish the lyrics, especially after hearing the alternate, previously unpublished rendition of "My Friend Jack" on one of the bonus tracks. While the popular version has some of the most creative imagery of "eating sugar lumps" and "dusty tracks into eternity," the alternate version lacks vision, and just denegrates into a simplistic song with vague and one-dimensional descriptions of Jack's journey through the doors of Perception.
I recommend this album for a few really good songs, but I would not make too lengthy a trek to score "It's Smoke Time."
Interesante y olvidado Freakbeat.......2003-08-17
My Friend Jack es un clásico de la época, musical y liricamente acorde al Londres de 1967, con una entrada de guitarra electrizante y un coro pegajoso, sin olvidar las referencias lisérgicas. En el mismo tono se encuentran You Can't Catch Me (otra vez espléndida guitarra), I Wanna Make It With You (a medias entre Pretty Things y Small Faces) y la sicodélica High in a Room. Menos preocupados por los violentos acordes y más cercano al pop están las logradas We Can't Take It e It's Just Your Way Of Lovin' mientras la solitaria balada Waterfall aquieta las aguas.

Based on Somerset Maugham's middling novel Theater, Annette Bening stars as the title character, an aging star of the London stage whose life and the melodramas she performs have come to mirror each other. Composer Mychael Danna sets those conflicts to a score that emphasizes theatrical surfaces and rigid role-playing, utilizing a finely honed classical pastiche approach with parallels to his previous period-evoking work on Vanity Fair. His cues here are rooted in the light romantic chamber music of the 19th century, though they frequently bristle with a more contemporary energy and aplomb. Offering counterpoint to Danna's dignified, oft-precious classical confections and mining the story's more sensual human dimensions are pop chestnuts from the era (The Andrews Sisters' saucy "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon" and Mills Brothers' jaunty "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries"), as well as fine contemporary takes of "They Didn't Believe Me" and Noel Coward's "Mad About the Boy" by Denzel Sinclair and Alison Jicar's elegant read of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Deep Purple was the first band to note that heavy metal and classical music share a certain deluded grandeur and attempted to combine the two. While what resulted--specifically, their Concerto for Group and Orchestra--was pretty fearful stuff, it did, for better or for worse, pave the way for a generation of classically influenced heavy-rock bands: King Crimson, Yes, and Queen, among others. The concerto on this live CD appears alongside a bunch of the Purple's more genteel songs they played at the Royal Albert Hall, a show that celebrated their 30th anniversary of their first appearance there. Ian Gillan, who can still do a creditable impression of a bomber revving for takeoff, shares vocals with Ronnie James Dio and Sam Brown. --Andrew MuellerAlbum Description

A must see.......2007-03-11
I reall contrast to the 1969 version of the Concertos where the conductor atually enjoys the whole experience.
Go for it!
I was VERY disappointed..........2003-08-12
Of course, Steve Morse was an odd substitute for Richie Blackmore, but stalwarts Ian Gillian and Jon Lord was in good form that night. The record doesn't start consistently rocking until WRING THAT NECK at the end of CD 1. (Kind of thinking about it, I would have liked to wring the necks of those who made the decisions to program and preserve this somewhat idiotic concert...ha, just kidding.)
On CD 2, I thought the concerto was pretty well executed (esp. the first movement) and the last couple songs on the album (esp Ted the Mechanic and Smoke on the Water) were well orchestrated and played. I guess I would give this album 4 stars if they only released CD2 and lowered the price.

This series of eleven church anthems is a sterling example of doing more with less. Though their format is multiple movements for soloists and chorus and inviting of grand treatment, Handel had available only a couple of oboes and a small string band and choir (with no violas or altos for nos. 1-6). Yet each one of these anthems is a gem. Handel's music captures well the changing moods of the Psalm texts--from somber penitence to serene bliss to infectious joy to the raging of storms and seas. Though Bowman's arias lie uncomfortably low for him, he and George do fine work; Lynne Dawson, Patrizia Kwella, and Ian Partridge are delightful. Harry Christophers leads his choir and orchestra in subtly inflected and beautifully paced performances. --Matthew WestphalCustomer Reviews:
Brilliant, Masterly, Choral Splendor.......2005-11-26
Anthem No. 10 (“The Lord is My Light and My Salvation”) is written for five part choir with three tenor solo airs and one short but very effective soprano air, masterfully performed by Lynne Dawson. Anthem No. 11 (“Let God Arise”) is mainly choral, with the two soloists having only one short air each. Ian Partridge is perhaps not quite as convincing as Lynne Dawson but does all that is required of him; the orchestra (this time with four each of first and second violins plus three cellos and a double bass in the strings, then two recorders, an oboe and a bassoon as woodwind and organ continuo) sounds decidedly mature in comparison with, say, the first volume and provides some highly entertaining moments.
The only slightly sour point about this particular CD is the playing time of merely 49 minutes, but if you are collecting Handel’s sacred works, that should in no wise deter you from buying and listening to this superb music.
