They call him "the Deke," but Deke Dickerson is more like the Dean of 21st-century rockabilly, a cognizant musician whose original songs and cover choices are strongly informed by country guitar heroes (Jimmy Bryant and Joe Maphis), early rockers and rollers (Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins), and 1950s R&B. On his third solo record, Dickerson's torrid guitar work is still the focal point, but this time out he's cut back on his usual dosage of silliness. His versatility is on display as he romps through country-jazz, swing, boogie, doo-wop, and his trademark rockabilly, including a rollicking cover of Grandpa Jones's "Hello Blues." --Scott Holter

5 out of 5 stars MAN, I FORGOT HOW WONDERFUL THIS ALBUM IS!!!!.......2007-02-09

man, i tell you what, i was just reminded about how lovely this album is to listen to. i had the tape, but i lost the tape. right after i ordered it on here, i find the cotton pickin' think hiding in a doggone bag!!!! nevertheless, this is wonder fusion of funk and hip hop. why it did not get more attention than it did, i do not know. it was a breath of fresh air for '91/'92. you just do not hear that type of thang anymore. if they did it today, they would probably be club bangahs in the form of jazz. shameful!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A rap album with substantial crossover appeal.......2006-11-10

Let me first say that with a few exceptions like Us3, Digable Planets and the Beastie Boys from Check Your Head forward, I am certainly NOT a fan of rap. But what those artists all have in common is a decidedly funk, soul and/or jazz groove rather than a contemporary urban R&B sound. And so it is with this album, where various American old-school rap artists - this album was recorded in 1991, after all - rhyme to tracks laid down by the London-based acid-jazz/rare-groove legends The Brand New Heavies. Rather than relying on processed beats and looped samples, the Heavies provide the MCs with genuine instrumental tracks with enough funk to get all but the comatose up out of their chairs. The tempo varies from slow-and-low grind-funk as in the opening track "Bonafide Funk" featuring Main Source and "It's Getting Hectic" featuring Gang Starr to driving dance-club beats as in "Soul Flower" featuring The Pharcyde and "Jump n' Move" featuring Jamalski (recently used in a trailer for the animated penguin movie "Happy Feet"). Regardless of pace, the Heavies infuse each song with deep basslines, rump-movin' funk-syncopated rhythms and infectious guitar hooks with liberal use of the wah-wah pedal.

The album has some minor weaknesses, in particular the sped-up, repetitive and insufferably grating vocal samples laid over "Do What I Gotta Do" with Ed O.G. But any weaknesses are superficial blemishes on the otherwise flawless musical foundation beneath each track.

This album should be on every Top 100 Hip-Hop Albums of All Time list. Its lack of widespread critical recognition much less commercial success is practically a crime.

5 out of 5 stars an unfortunately slept on album..........2006-01-09

IMHO, one of the great albums of all time.

Fantastic rhymes from 10 different lyricists (many of them some of the great names in underground/not-so-underground hip-hop of the era), over the Heavies' great vintage-instrument-influenced grooves.

Hip-hop records from the mid-80s through the early-90s have an organic production quality that is generally missing from the more slicked-out productions of today (which is not to say that hip-hop today ALWAYS feels inorganic). To me, what is significant about "Heavy Rhyme Experience, Vol. 1" is that the music has that same organic feeling, but none of the music is sampled. Certainly it is influenced by James Brown, The Meters, the Mizells, etc. (who of course were the same artists being sampled in hip-hop around that time), but all the music is written and performed by the Heavies and the guest rappers. And cleverly, too! The subtleties of the compositions still knock me out 15 years later--the Heavies' understated variations on the repetitive grooves call to mind earlier hip-hop productions, but also the music of Fela Kuti and Steve Reich.

In the realm of hip-hop with a live band, "Heavy Rhyme Experience" is hard to compare to The Roots, but this record may be funkier and display more variety and diversity than any of The Roots' recordings. It's kind of a shame that the Heavies never actually made a Volume 2, exploring this direction further. This is easily their best album, though "Brother Sister" is very good.

The only complaint I have is the length, which at 30-something minutes leaves me wishing for so much more...

5 out of 5 stars Seems like No one's heard of this hip hop classic.......2004-02-26

I spent a long time trying to re-find this album after it was originally stolen from me. It wasn't til the re-release that I was able to find it and I was amazed at all the fantastic MC's from the past that were used on this album. Everyone from Grand Puba, Guru, Jamalski, Masta Ace, the Pharcyde, Main Source and Kool G Rap drop rhymes on this album, and the funky, jazzy beats by the Brand New Heavies are just so refreshing. This is like a breath of Fresh air when it comes to hip hop, and just the names of the Mc's alone should make it worthwhile.

Admittedly, this is not really the best example of the Brand New Heavies music. In fact, it's not a good representation of them at all, except it does show the diversity of their style, and the music they make is fantastic, regardless. This version of Soulflower with the Pharcyde is just great and I liked it much better than the version used on the Bizarre Ride 2 The Pharcyde.

5 out of 5 stars Any True Fan of Hip-Hop or Funk Should..........2004-02-03

Own this album! This is one of the best CDs I've ever owned, and one of the best hip-hop CDs of all-time. I can't say it enough -- buy this CD, you can't be dissapointed. Super funky English acid-jazz band at their peak and dope MCs, but all organic and stripped down.

5 out of 5 stars Deke never disappoints.........2001-10-17

The third CD from Deke and the Eccofonics, and just as usual, Deke rocks. This CD is a bit different sounding than the other two from the Eccofonics, but just as great. "Will you be Mine?" will have you cruising down the highway, singing along at the top of your lungs. If you love Deke, you'll love this CD...I know I do!

5 out of 5 stars WHERE TO AIM.......2001-02-28

While, I've certainly appreciated Deke's work on previous releases this one takes the cake.Let's face it, he likes to clown around, make people laugh, but on his latest, he cracks open the basement door a bit.The self-penned tunes, WHERE TO AIM and WHERE I'M GOIN'? show he's more than the merry prankster reving it up on that ol' double necked guitar of his. There's real heart and yearning in these tunes.

That's not to say this one's a downer. WANG DANG DULA and HOT RODDER'S LAMENT keep your toes tappin'. And as always, his choice of covers reveal a true knowlege of rock-n-roll in the buff.

So what you have here is all the fun of his earlier stuff and a few stunning surprizes as well.Fans won't be disappointed and new comers won't either.

5 out of 5 stars Real Rock and Roll Lives On.......2000-11-30

If you are a fan of simple straight ahead Rock and Roll, Rockabilly, and Country then this CD is a must have. The album sounds like it came right out of the late 50's early 60's. Deke combines the afore mentioned styles and makes them his own with amazing results. Rhythm Rhyme and Truth will appeal to a broad base of fans from Country to Rock. A well written album with great music. The only thing better than this cd is catching them live.

4 out of 5 stars Unlike Anything I Have Ever Heard!.......2007-05-09

Kokane comes out in 1994 with what I believe is his 2nd album: Funk Upon A Rhyme. Many heads nowdays recognize him as cat who does the hook on many West Coast rappers' songs. He has that moany whiny but likeable voice you hear 100 times on Snoop Dogg's Tha Last Meal and on some of Above The Law's works. His 1994 Ruthless release is very unique. Some of it is hard to define as to whether if it is rap or just funk. Overall, there is a heavy P-Funk inflected G-Funk flava to it. Cold 187um from Above The Law definitely produces some interesting beats. A couple beats are hard to get into such as "From The Funk To The Back" and The Rasta inflected "Funkinmuffin," but there are some beats that are simply unbelievable!! My fav is "Aftermath" where Above The Law steps in and spits some gangsta game over a bumpin lowrider beat. "S--- G--d--m" is a hot party jam with a bouncy beat. Kokane lights a spliff on the "Slow Burnin 22.5 Degrees Farenheit" with a semi disco-funk beat. Now, there are some weird songs here where he does too much whining, which takes away from the listenability of a couple like on "I Need Representation," even though the lyrics take on subjects like brothas deserving some help dealing with issues in their lives and how the system can be unfair and biased. Despite the drawn out vocals, the beat is some nice slow funk perfect for the ride. This album has taken some time to grow on me, but I am starting to get into the groove with it though. Not flawless by a long shot, but definitely interesting and different. Definitely off the beaten path. The thing is, this album is hella rare now selling for as much as 60-80 bucks. I like the ambition and efort Kokane put into this album, and eventhough it does not work all the time, it is a neat endeavor throught the space boogie of tripped out funk. This album will continue to grow on me as I listen to it more and more.

2 out of 5 stars Too weird...hard to get into.......2007-01-03

Over the years, I have heard nothing but the highest praise for Kokane's 1994 album "Funk Upon a Rhyme," and always assumed it must be the classic its reputation suggest based on the fact that it routinely sells for hundreds of dollars today. I have really enjoyed a lot of Kane's collaborations in the past, especially his extended work on Above the Law's album "Uncle Sam's Curse" and Snoop Dogg's album "Tha Last Meal," as well as more recent collabos like "Suga Cain" with Suga Free. I finally got around to checking out "Funk Upon a Rhyme" and was severely disappointed. This album is in a word weird. Other reviewers have tagged this as one of the west coast's greatest masterpieces, and I can't believe I'm listening to the same record. I know you'd expect Kane's solo material to be as lovably odd as his guest appearances, but it's not just the singing that's so odd, it's the entire product. There are a lot of decent grooves in the production department, courtesy of Cold 187um, DJ Yella, and even Kokane himself, but there aren't really any great ones. The production kind of walks the line between g-funk and George Clinton type of funk but isn't an especially satisfying mix of either. With upbeat bass, whiny synthesizers, and funky beats, these tracks could be great but for the most part are too repetitive and go on for much too long. But it's Kokane's singing that is the most disappointing part of this album. Rather than show his vocal talent and creativity with his funky singing, most of the time Kane sounds like he's whining or wailing. Lyrically, I have always enjoyed Kane, because he has the ability to be totally fun like on Above the Law's "Kalifornia" or deep like on "Gangsta Madness." Here, it's hard to follow most of his lyrics, which at times seem to just be there in order to have something over the beats. His attempted disses towards the Dogg Pound and others fall flat, and most of the time listening to his lyrics is like watching a movie where you can't follow the plot. I think "Slow Burnin' 22.5 Degrees Farenheit" and "Funkinmuffin" are meant to be sort of nonsensical, but they're not funny either. I can't follow the musically decent "I Need Representation" for the life of me, and the singing doesn't enhance the song at all. And while the woozy beat of "No Pain, No Gain" is very good, Kane's screeching is ironically, well, painful. Basically, this music is just too weird, it's not rap music and it's not any other definable genre either, it's just an odd mix of strange vocals and electronic hip hop beats that didn't appeal to me. I will continue to love his other music, but I find that in the same way many believe hookmen such as Nate Dogg cannot carry a solo album, Kane falls into the same boat. I respect Kokane for making such a unique work of music, and I guess today it's a collector's item, but I don't recommend it towards other listeners. The cover of "Funk Upon a Rhyme" warns that "listening may cause addiction," but for me it did no such thing and I was disappointed with the album.

5 out of 5 stars kokane.......2006-02-12

My reasons to tag this album the Best Kokane album is done with little hesitation. Perhaps MC Eiht's We Come Strapped comes a close to Funk Upon A Rhyme . In this album we see the artist weave a tapestry of intricate tight sound and odd yet melodic vocals. The lyrics are solid, and outside the fact that kokane is consumed by the anger towards Dre, still enjoy this album. This album is G-funk, but with a George Clintonesque P-funk twist. Over all I still listen to this album frequently, and is a stunning coup de'teatre that is second to none in terms of west coast rap. The first 5 or 6 songs serve as an apparatus to get you to "My Day is Coming" and after that every song is absolutely excellent or perfect. The second half of this album interweaves the eloquence of philosophy (lyrics and socio-economic circumstance) and the precision of mathematics (intricate sound and beats). This is an album that bespeaks greatness in what I call the renaissance of rap. On the Death Row diss track "Don't Bite the Phunk", locc'd out Pimp'sta Kokane & the 187-Master Cold 187um have to take on punks Dr. Dre, Snoop Doggy Dogg & Kurupt, which Mr.Kane & Big Hutch go Insane in the Brain! Death Row acts that it was the only gangsta rap label, but hey, yo Dre! Stick to producing because, Mr.Kane likes his Chronic mixed with some PCP! Snoop Doggy Doggy Dogg has been getting it up his a$$ by his CEO Suge Knight, which Big Dogg Blue has no clue what Mr.Kane & Big Hutch gonna do! Kurupt the Dogg Pound Crip, can't take the likes of G's from Compton, Long Beach, South Central, Watts, Carson and even Pomona, CA! So wut would that wannabe locc do if Mr.Kane is gonna do, so call Big Hutch "Kurupt"! 5 out of 5 stars Excellent message in song with music and vocals to match........1999-07-15

In the Southern Gospel Industry today, there are many different styles of music. Although Poet Voices uses this style for its basis, the message and music reach further to appeal to a wider scale of listeners. The CD of Rhythm & Rhyme gives worship and praise, celebration, encouragement, and a truth of our relationship with God within the selection of songs.

I have truly been blessed by the recording as well as seeing this group minister many times. I will be looking forward to the next release by this wonderful Southern Gospel Quartet.

5 out of 5 stars superb, superb, superb.......1998-09-15

This is an excellent album. My first exposure to Phil and Poet Voices was at the 3rd Southern Gospel Weekend, at Camp Harmattan,Alberta.

Like their five previous albums, this one is well done, includes recordings written by Cross, and manifests PV committment to excellent music, uplifting and stirring message, and challenge to cling to Christ, seek only His face, and glorify His name. (PS: I have since tried to obtain all previous recordings of Cross and PV).

PV made this album available at Harmattan (well ahead of the anticipated release -- 1999), grabbing copies hot off the press as they headed North to Canada.

Well worth the wait. Or, if you can attend one of their concerts, you most likely can pick this up sooner.

If you haven't yet heard Phil Cross and Poet Voices: grab this album as soon as you can; you will not be disappointed.
