Product Description
It sounds like the plot of a classic Western saga: Six young men ride out of the South Carolina uplands seeking fame and adventure, dazzling crowds and creating a legend along the way. Actually, the above scenario describes The Marshall Tucker Bands rise to mass popularity in the mid-1970s. Like true Sunday-matinee cowboy heroes, the band made it thanks to a restless spirit and a tender heart, blazing a country-rock trail for later artists to follow.
Long Hard Ride, Marshall Tuckers 1976 album, came on the heels of their first Top 40 radio hit, "Fire On The Mountain." Striving to build upon this breakthrough, they delivered an album that mixed country, rock and blues into a distinctive whole. A good number of the tunes were radio-friendly numbers that reined in the bands jamming tendencies. But the individual playing styles that made Marshall Tucker unique clearly shone through, making Long Hard Ride a worthy addition to their catalogue.

The Bottom Line..........2007-04-01
All the finest ingredients of rock, country, blues, and jazz blended into a down-home gumbo as only The (original) Marshall Tucker Band could do it! The remastered series sounds superb audibly, and the packaging is beautifully restored- complete with historic photos and interesting liner notes. The Marshall Tucker Band remastered recordings of the original band- "Self Titled" through "Tenth"- are well worth the investment.
For True Fans.......2006-02-08
As stated before, the album has a more country twang than other Marshall Tucker Band albums, but is not to be looked over. As part of the Southern Rock, MTB is more country than the Allman Brothers or Lynyrd Skynyrd, and more blues than Charlie Daniels. This album brings out the country side in the band, especially with the title track "Long Hard Ride". The album is not a starting point for new MTB fans, but a definite for fans already enjoying other albums.
A Return To Form For The Marshall Tucker Band.......2005-03-25
After the artistic disappointment of SEARCHIN' FOR A RAINBOW, the Marshall Tucker Band returned to the quality of their first three albums with LONG HARD RIDE. Compared to the previous album, which had only one good song, this one is top-notch through and through, and the reissue includes a song from bassist Tommy Caldwell's last show with the band. The fact that this album didn't do as well as its vastly inferior predecessor is, in my view, a perfect justification for music appreciation teachers to assign their students homework for over the summer, even if it does spoil their vacation plans. If you loved Marshall Tucker's first three albums, as well as anything by Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers Band, or the Outlaws, you'll love LONG HARD RIDE.
More country than the earlier albums and still great.......2004-02-19
"Long Hard Ride" is one of the underappreciated MTB albums, coming between "Searchin' For A Rainbow" (with it's Top 40 hit "Fire On The Mountain") and the platinum "Carolina Dreams" (with the band's biggest hit "Heard It In A Love Song"). The album gets off to a rousing start with "Long Hard Ride." With it's bullwhip, fiddle and memorable guitar lead it's a killer opening salvo. Toy Caldwell was simply one of the most distinctive, creative, and powerful guitarists ever. His work on the first 10 MTB albums withstands the test of time. My favorite track on the album has to be "Am I The Kind Of Man." A downtempo number, lyrically and musically it touches your heart and soul.
If you're looking to start your MTB collection begin with "Where We All Belong" and "A New Life" but if you're looking for a killer addition to your existing MTB collection this would be a great one to pick up. Oh, yeah! The CD reissue has not only much-improved sound, but also a killer bonus live track: "(If I Could) See You One More Time."

Barrueco plays Lennon McCartney.......2007-03-20
A first-class CD. Excellent arrangements, especially with London Symphony on "Winding Road."
Brilliant arrangements and performance.......2007-03-06
Aside from the folks who would otherwise waste an opportunity to discuss the worthiness of this album, I fully endorse it as an example of a beautiful combination of excellent playing and superb composing. A good arranger finds the perfect balance between keeping honest to the original music and exploring/exploiting the inherent qualities within it through different means. That's precisely what occurs with this album. You're hard pressed to find better arrangements than the Takemitsu. Leo Brower shows a deft touch for string writing in his arrangements and again his writing for the guitar is spot on. The final two arrangements by Mr. Lubbock are interesting, yet straying further from their original inspiration than the other arrangements, still manage to capture that lovely balance.
There aren't enough accolades to give Maestro Barrueco whose precision and musicianship are nearly unmatched (still a close second to Pepe Romero in my book). An excellent and interesting purchase for guitar, strings, and Beatles lovers alike.
hmm..........2002-02-05
Um... for the record: All the Beatle songs other than those composed by George Harrison or Ringo Starr were credited to "Lennon-McCartney" or "John Lennon and Paul McCartney" by prior agreement of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, whether they actually collaborated (as they did in many cases) or one of them worked by himself.
John Lennon wrote Ticket To Ride, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, A Hard Day's Night, and You've Got To Hide Your Love Away.
Paul McCartney wrote Yesterday, Here, There, And Everywhere, Fool On The Hill, Penny Lane, Hey Jude, and The Long And Winding Road.
John Lennon and Paul McCartney collaborated on Eleanor Rigby, She's Leaving Home, and Michelle.
Again ?.......1999-12-05
This is not the first CD on this site where you try to convince us that John wrote The fool on the hill and other songs written by Paul.I really can't believe you're so uninformed.

And What a Ride !.......2004-12-12
Nominated for a grammy this classic album sums up what MTB are all about.
They may have missed out on the grammy but they certainly did not miss out on delivering probably their finest piece of work.
With an album cover any Spaghettti Western movie mogul in Hollywood would be envious of when the first track starts, Long Hard Ride, you would honestly think you were in that stagecoach on the cover.
A mighty fine album of yeah hah whip cracking country rockers and soulful unlucky in love ballads.
A must in any country boys(and girls) CD collection
A BREATH OF FRESH AIR.......2003-07-12
Out of the 8 tracks, only 6 are outstanding, which is why I rated it a 4. Long Hard Ride gives you a feeling that you are out in the open riding hard on a stallion, riding free. Property Line makes you want to stomp your feet and chug a few beers. Am I The Kind Of Man is an introspective song and it makes you stop to think and reflect. Now, Walkin' The Streets Alone, it's as joyful as a song can get, as a matter of fact it is SO joyful that it brings tears to my eyes. Windy City Blues has shades of Long Hard Ride and it's good to listen to, but you want to go to the next song, Holding On To You. Now, there's a song that you want to listen to while you are driving along the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. It's so great and it brings more tears to my eyes. The last two songs? Forget them. They're terrible, so terrible that the last time I listened to them was 10-15 years ago.
Decent collection of 70s Tucker lacks any singles.......2001-01-23
"Long Hard Ride" is probably the least known of MTB's 70s albums because it contained no big singles. Nevertheless, it is fairly representative of their 70s sound. There are both rockin' and country tracks with a few good lovesongs thrown in. If you own Tucker classics like "A New Life" and "Where We All Belong" and are looking to supplement your collection, you could certainly do worse.
Three great songs make it worth the price.......1998-11-30
I'm writing this review some 20+ years after I first heard LHR at Grand Targhee ski resort in Wyoming. This CD has three great songs that make it worth the price - Long Hard Ride, Windy City Blues, and You Don't Live Forever. I only wish these guys could have kept making that kind of music - a great mix of country rock and country blues.
