Daughter of working-class Jamaica-to-England transplants, Tasmin Archer has a terrific voice--a soprano with plenty of power even in the lower gears of the conversational verses but capable of erupting on the choruses into a siren wails that can sustain of single syllables as long as she wants. When she grabs hold of a juicy melody, as she does on "Arienne" (a transparent rewrite of the Hollies' "Carrie- Anne"), she sounds like Annie Lennox against the synth-pop backing. Unfortunately, Archer's songwriting partners are isn't not Dave Stewart but guitarist John Hughes and keyboardist John Beck, who have none of the Eurythmics' knack for hooks and humor. Instead Archer is handed 11 very somber tunes with lyrics that circle serious issues like ecology, women's rights, and class injustice without ever quite grabbing hold of them. --Geoffrey Himes

Whether the movie Great Expectations was any good or not, the soundtrack excelled, crossing generations and cultures as Cesaria Evora nestles next to the Dead's "Uncle John's Band," and Mono's breathless "Life in Mono" leads into former Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell's surprising "Sunshower." A new song from Pulp, the first solo release by former Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland, and Great Expectations offers a wealth of surprises, the mood constantly changing, the only constant being the quality of the music, whether from established figures or relative newcomers. From Tori Amos to the Verve Pipe, this is an album that has it all. --Chris Nickson

Loved the movie, loved the soundtrack even more. A great collection; perfect for anytype of mood. These songs have passion and a purpose. Highly recommend for alternative/rock listeners and those who enjoy 90's style music.

4 out of 5 stars A great collection of music that's better than the movie!.......2006-05-05

I didn't hesitate in the least when I saw this CD for cheap at a used bookstore. With previously unavailable songs from some of my favorite artists and a list of other artists that I enjoy hearing from every now and then, this soundtrack was a great buy!

As a Tori Amos fan, I love the way the album opens. The song "Siren" is just beautiful and was a taste of things to come for her. "Life in Mono" is one of the most haunting bits of electronica that you'll ever hear and this is the single that got me into Mono the group. "Today" by Poe is another highlight for me; new Poe material is hard to come by. "Walk This Earth Alone" is another bright spot; Lauren Christy material is also hard to come by since she started writing songs for today's teen pop stars. The solo tune from Scott Weiland is great too; not really a song you'd expect to hear from him.

It's also great to listen to the tracks from other artists that I enjoy but don't listen to often. Chris Cornell, Pulp, Duncan Sheik, and The Verve Pipe all have strong tracks featured here. I also really love the song by Fisher. I'd never heard of her before, but her voice is so lovely. I know I'll be getting more from her in the future.

The music from this film was much better than the film itself. Not that the movie was really bad, but as a fan of the original novel, I find this film to be lacking in emotion. I also don't care for Ethan Hawke. That's hard to overlook. But I recommend this album if you want to hear an eclectic mixture of sounds made by some of music's most respected artists. You might even hear something new!

And you know you're gonna lie to you
In your own way
And you know you're gonna lie to you
In your own way

And I lie some other day
You do
And you say girl

Know too well
Know the chill
Know she breaks
My siren

Know teenage flesh
Know the chill
Know she breaks
My siren

Never was one for a prissy girl
Coquette call in for an ambulance
Reach high, doesn't mean she's holy
Just means she's got a cellular handy
Almost brave, almost pregnant
Almost in love
Vanilla
Vanilla

And you know you're gonna lie to you
In your own way
And you know you're gonna lie to you
In your own way

And you don't need the light on
To guide you through the southern lands
Go said go, yes

Know too well
Know the chill
Know she breaks
My siren

Know teenage flesh
Know the chill
Know she breaks
My siren

Never was one for a prissy girl
Coquette call in for an ambulance
Reach high, doesn't mean she's holy
Just means she's got a cellular handy
Almost brave, almost pregnant
Almost in love

5 out of 5 stars One of the best soundracks ever!.......2005-10-07

I've been listening to this cd for 7 years now and it continues to remain one of my favorites. While the Tori Amos song is good and has definately grown on my since I heard it, it is not the best song on the album. Duncan Sheik's "Wishful Thinking" is truly a masterpiece, beautiful lyrically and musically. The cd is so emotional, every song has interesting lyrics and what makees them great is that they relate to the movie so well while also relating to your life as well. "Breakable" and "Walk this Earth alone" are other great songs. But honestly, I thik all of them are great and I find myself wanting to simply list all of them right now. But instead of boring you, I just want to highly recommend this cd to anyone who is very interested and open about music. It is so different from anything else I've heard but its so great. I can't say enough good things about it!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite soundtrack.......2005-08-04

This is my favorite soundtrack. There are different styles, but they all blend together wonderfully. John Williams is masterful, as ever, on the guitar.

4 out of 5 stars Kissing in the Rain.......2003-08-28

Track #8, "Kissing in the Rain," is the sexiest track. It's the music played during my favorite scene when Estella runs after Pip. It is a powerful, emotional, heart rising piece. Play it over and over and dream of kissing Ethan Hawke.

5 out of 5 stars Better then most any other score!!.......2002-06-25

Ok ok..don't get me wrong Titanic's score was great, but Great Expectation's score is full of different moods. While titanic was full of love and the fear of the sinking, this one is quite different. Throughout the score the different themes come alive, from love, betrayal, regret, greed, and forgiveness at the end. This is one of the most beautiful scores I have listened to in a long time. "Estella's Theme" is just beautiful, and I usually don't like guitar, but it's just enchanting! AS with "Kissing in the Rain" I feel chills every time I hear it! Just shut off all the lights and lay down and listen to this score! You can just imagine yourself there and feeling what the characters felt! It's just amazing! a 5+ star!!

4 out of 5 stars I loved the film, I love this CD!.......2001-02-17

I actually purchased this CD by mistake. I had originally wanted the other Soundtrack (the one with the words!) I realized I made the error only after I took the plastic off the CD-- oops! Well, for once, one of my mistakes worked to my favor! This CD is excellent. I did see the film and I loved it. The film itself totally exceeded my expectations and I hightly recommend you renting it. This CD creates a certain aviance-- perhaps a rainy evening best describes it's alluring charm. It's wonderful background music when you have guests over and want to create a "relaxed" atmosphere-- it's very condusive to conversation. I've owned this CD for about a year now and still enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2000-06-04

I didn't enjoy the film much, pretty boring. But the CD is pretty good, the John Williams is nice..and the BIG highlight was Kiri Te Kanawa's 'aria' which she sings so romantically. Why wasn't it in the film!

4 out of 5 stars Strong Vocals, Diverse Stylings..........2007-07-16

I was captivated by Tasmin Archer after hearing "Sleeping Satellite" via "UK Chart Attack", a Top 40 program featuring hits from Britain in late 1992. After buying the cd upon its release in the U.S. in early 1993, I was pleasantly surprised. "Great Expectations" covers an array of various styles and tune smithing that reveal polish and melody. Some of the production is a bit glossy and formulaic in parts - but I find that this approach likely helped the cd to find a footing in mainstream music. Interesting subject matter abounds of which in conjunction with some melodic arrangements and strong vocals, tends to reel the listener in. "Sleeping Satellite" (written about the implications of space travel) has a nifty organ instrumental in the middle of the song that stands out nicely; "Lords Of The New Church" which details disillusionment with religion, is very catchy and rife with pop ambiance and hooks. Yet, it is lyrically deeper than your everyday pop song. "Hero" also has a strong chorus that has you humming and reflecting on the song long after its conclusion. "When It Comes Down To It" has a nice melancholic aura about it that lingers through subdued arrangements and poignant vocal delivery. "Somebody's Daughter" has a pop/rock "by the numbers" feel that again, impacts the listener on a number of levels. "Ripped Inside" is an earnest, heartbreaking account of betrayal and love lost. The other tracks on here are all solid and very accessible. Some may contend that the songwriting misses the mark on some counts and the production is "overripe" - but I beg to differ. "Great Expectations" is a great piece of music from a truly great (and seriously underrated) singer. Check it out and enjoy.

What a great talent - seems undiscovered in the U.S. Should be on everyone's iPod!

5 out of 5 stars A pop/rock gem.......2006-03-18

This album is fantastic. Her voice is unique and soulful. In my opinion the best songs are "Sleeping satellite", "Lords of the New Church", "In your care" and "Somebody's Daughter". The whole album it's outstanding! Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars In Tasmin's Care.......2005-10-24

5 out of 5 stars An elusive but memorable soul-folk-rock blend........2005-01-26

Even if you don't know who Tasmin Archer is, you may have heard her debut single "Sleeping Satellite". While not a huge hit, this was one of the most distinctive mainstream songs of the '90s. Not quite R&B, not quite folk rock, and not quite ambient, the song almost guarantees that once you hear it, you won't forget it.

On her debut, Archer was a little similar to Tracy Chapman in her presentation -- a young black woman who didn't belong directly to an R&B/soul genre, with songwriting and arrangements that beckon more to white traditions -- confessional folk in the case of Chapman, and polished pop/rock in the case of Archer. But both artists were able to add a distinctive flavour to their music with a huskier, soul-inflected vocal style, and so Chapman's folk songs and Archer's radio-friendly pop-rock sound like nobody else, both harmonious black-white amalgams with unique personalities.

"Sleeping Satellite" was a hugely impressive debut single, all the more so because it's a very low-key song. The melodies don't soar, the arrangements are subtle and even (a chiming piano, acoustic guitars mixed very far back), and the backbeat stays in a quiet, pensive groove.
But somehow it sounds anthemic (the larger-than-life lyrics help), another one of those songs you feel like should have been written a long time ago. Archer has more tricks up her sleeve, though -- "Arienne" is Byrdsian folk rock in the classic car-radio tradition, but "Lords of the New Church" is high-energy rock, harkening to Bruce Springsteen, and "Somebody's Daughter" is a moody midtempo rock number with a memorable lyric hook but a very Europop string section which spices up the arrangement nicely.

I'd stumbled upon Archer's music once again while going through my music library randomly, and putting on this record reminds me of the dozens of times I've spun this CD since I'd first bought it way back in 1992. It's a record that ages gracefully, sounding as up to date as it did 12 years ago, and Archer's appealing musical mix continues to delight.

    Album Description

Superfecta presents NMA's first-ever career-spanning 'Best Of' collection, Great Expectations!

18 singles are included--from their indie days on Abstract, to their major label days on EMI and Sony, to their recent releases on Attack Attack. Compiled with the assistance of lead singer/songwriter, Justin Sullivan, this release features hand-picked versions of their singles. The Extended Mix of Poison Street appears for the first time on a commercial CD and a new edit of Purity was requested by Mr. Sullivan himself. Furthermore, seven of the tracks have never before been released in the United States.

Longtime NMA cover artist Joolz has created brand new artwork for the album. And world renowned music critic & NMA fan from day one, Jack Rabid, has composed some stellar liner notes.

All of the tracks have been Digitally Remastered, so whether you're a longtime fan or just discovering New Model Army, this is the collection for you.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars an army that will never fall.......2005-01-14

New Model Army has often been compared to the likes of WAR-era U2, The Alarm, and countless obscure UK Punk bands who lean towards political and religious subjects, yet they are in a class by themselves by securing the dubious honor of being one of the few Punk bands to actively incorporate the use of a violin or an acoustic guitar into their sound. if there was ever a band who had such a burning desire in their hearts and minds for anything whatsoever, it is New Model Army. and this album certainly lives up to its title. on 1984's 'The Price', Justin Sullivan's introspective and breathy vocals ignite a passionate fire as he channels the vocal stylings of Sting back in the days when he was fighting for New Wave justice with The Police. on 1987's 'White Coats,' Sullivan and Co. question the existence of life, the tragedy of suicide, and what lies ahead of us in the great beyond. the two most recognized tracks on this disc are both from NMA's standout year of 1989: 'Vagabonds' and 'Green And Grey'. 'Vagabonds' is a true battle cry for anyone who has ever felt lost or alienated as Sullivan chants "we are in this together" in the song's chorus, set to a military-style drum beat, a strong guitar, and a piercing violin strain a la 'Sunday Bloody Sunday.' 'Green And Grey' is a haunting acoustic lament to a deceased friend. if you have ever lost someone you love, this song will surely make you feel their presence. it has also been said that Justin Sullivan's voice is "too pristine" to be fronting a Punk band. but like the music he sings, he is fighting for a noble cause, which in this case would be the fact that Punk doesn't always have to sound chaotic to be considered aggressive. and Sullivan's stunning rasp certainly proves that point.
although New Model Army never reached the enormous amount of popularity that the aforementioned U2 achieved, they remain one of the most driven bands of the 1980's and beyond. no matter what struggles they face, this is one army that will never fall.

5 out of 5 stars As good as a band can possibly be.......2004-05-18

This career-spanning retrospective of NMA is nothing more than a document of the only rock band that really matters anymore. R.E.M. have wandered off somewhere, U2 has become too inconsistent, and Bob Mould seems to have retired. NMA keeps soldiering on, however, and even with a five-year hiatus in the mid-1990s, they still bring that fire and passion that they always did. Every song is delivered as if it is the most important news you'll ever hear, and NMA continue to buck against all trends. While they may never have a massive commercial success here in the US, one listen should convince anyone that there is no one who deserves it more.

This CD suffers from one flaw: it should have been two. There are a few singles missing ("Queen of My Heart", most obviously, as well as the live version of "Space" from 1991's Raw Melody Men), but it gets five stars anyway because the material on it is so crucial and arresting and flat-out fantastic that it could hardly receive anything less. Of particular note is the US-only remix of 1986's "Poison Street", a must for collectors as its album The Ghost Of Cain is widely regarded as one of their best. Three tracks come from 1988's Thunder And Consolation, although in all honesty any three songs from that masterpiece would fit perfectly here. Understand that this is a band whose 1994 b-side compilation sounds better and more complete than almost any other artist's studio release.

NMA have always been overlooked in the US, although as of this writing they are touring here for the first time in at least 10 years, playing clubs around the nation. Any fan of English punk, post-punk, rock, balladry and lyrics that actually say something should absolutely not miss this. Those of you who do not know NMA could very easily start here and hear what happens when you don't sell out.

2 out of 5 stars Is this really supposed to be musical theater?.......2004-09-17

I'm afraid it appears to me that the composer of the musical version of Great Expectations has no concept of creating mood with music, adaptation of a novel to the stage, or any kind of hit song (or even a ballad!). This CD is basically more than fifty songs, each less than two minutes in length, wherein the actors spew forth rhyme-less, tuneless, forgettable songs with equally putrid lyrics. These kind of interstitial songs usually appear in musicals, it's just that shows don't usually consist of ONLY these short, narrative-with-no-sense-of-musicality pieces. Actually, listening to some of the music left me just nonplussed and baffled. This is not what musical theater is supposed to be. If you're looking for a musical adaptation of a classic, look for Jekyll & Hyde, Aida, Jane Eyre, the slightly overplayed but still excellent (especially compared to Great Expectations) Les Miserables or even Rent! I gave this recording two stars for some good casting and a couple moments of actual music.

5 out of 5 stars Great Expectations Great Results!.......2003-11-07

Ralph Chicorel has written an unbelievable soundtrack. Each number is well written and well executed.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Musical.......1999-01-28

This is an excellent musical adaptaion of Dicken's story. Beautifully written music and using Dicken's actual words make it that much more impressive. I give it a big FIVE STARS!!!

5 out of 5 stars Dickens has never sounded so good!.......1998-12-31

Really enjoyed hearing the story of Great Expectations brought to music. Chicorel uses original words from the novel and incorporates them into song. Noticed that Sally Ann Howes of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang fame appears on this CD. Would highly recommend this CD for any lover of theatre soundtracks or Dickens stories!

    4 out of 5 stars LA Express.......2001-06-11

Sounds a lot like the LA Express w/Tom Scott of the 70's. He guests on a cut but even the ones he's not on have his presence. Brian Price on the opening track sounds like Larry Carlton. Good straight ahead jazz fusion and sounds like they are having fun.

        4 out of 5 stars Most Enjoyable.......2001-06-25

I bought this cd because, I'll admit, I am a big Ioan Gruffudd fan. I loved this movie, so, of course, I had to have the soundtrack! It has proved to be a great addition to my cd collection in it's own right.

The album tells the story of Great Expectations quite well. Each song is from a specific scene or moment that brings us through the story. The music itself is highly symbolic--with different sounds and melodies reminding us of the pasts our characters cannot escape. The liner notes by the composer are fascinating. He describes the symbolic meanings and threads of each different melody/theme.

There are several quite brilliant moments. Of note are, "Pip Becomes a Gentleman", "Gentlemen on the River", and "The Last Moments of Magwitch".

I have not taken this cd out of my cd player since it arrived. I would highly reccomend it to anyone with an ear for beautiful and unusual music. You won't be dissappointed!
