Album Description
Christmas Never Sounded So Good!
For more than a decade, John Rutter and the Cambridge Singers have shared the Joy of Christmas with the world. The ethereal sound of perfectly blended voices, singing the most beautiful seasonal music ever composed never fails to touch the heart or lift the spirit. This year, John Rutter and the Cambridge Singers have assembled a NEW collection - compiled from the archives, including FOUR NEVER BEFORE RELEASED TRACKS! This is a holiday feast you will NOT want to miss!
Customer Reviews:
Almost angelic.......2007-01-18
Choral music by the Cambridge Singers is always top-notch. An older album that might have sounded better with newer technology but no complaints. Has great vocals and orchestral support.
Great choir, but mostly recycled material.......2005-12-16
I have the utmost respect for John Rutter and his Cambridge Singers, probably the best choir in the world (at least, the English-speaking world). I have almost all their CDs. Two of their Christmas CDs are "desert-island" class for this listener.
Unfortunately, I cannot give this otherwise excellent CD the same high marks. If they wanted to release a "best of Cambridge Christmas" CD, this would not be it. It does a few of the absolute best Christmas selections, including Sweelinck's "Hodie", Willcocks's breathtaking arrangement of "The Infant King", and Rutter's own quirky reading of "Personent Hodie". And it does contain a few tracks not previously released.
However, if you want the best of Cambridge and Christmas, start with "Christmas Night", which is always the first CD I pull out the day after Thanksgiving. The sound of the famliar Persall setting of "In Dulci Jubilo" sets my holiday in motion. And that CD also has Rutter's own magical "There is a flower". After that CD, get "Christmas with the Cambridge Singers", which has "The Infant King" and some other treasures.
So, you can't really go wrong with this CD, especially if you just want an introduction to how this fine ensemble addresses the most choir-friendly holiday of all. But if you're serious about getting all the good stuff, start with the other two mentioned above, then add "Christmas Day in the Morning" and the early "Christmas Star".
Glittering Chrismas Music.......2005-11-15
I own virtually all of the CD's of John Rutter (whom I greatly admire) and the Cambridge Singers, and I am a fan of English Choral music in general. If I were asked to recommend only one of the many Cambridge Singers Christmas albums, or indeed one of any English Christmas album, a hard choice, this would be it. As others have noted, this CD is a compilation of songs from previous cds with four new releases. It is, I believe, longer playing than the other Cambridge albums. In style, it is a mostly quiet sounding collection--in fact several carols are sung a cappella-- with pieces ranging from carols such as "The Holly and the Ivy" to the more robust "Fantasia on Christmas Carols". In sum, this is a sensitively arranged and performed collection of beautiful Christmas music.
The Spirit of Christmas On CD.......2005-06-02
I have never been disappointed by any Cambridge Singers release, so it isnt surprising that I thoroughly enjoyed this offering as well. This CD is a compilation of songs from previous cds with one or two new tracks, so check your library to make sure you arent duplicating your collection in the order to complete your collection. I purchased this disk to obtain a copy of the Fantasia On Christmas Carols by Ralph Vaughn Williams which was originally released on Christmas Day In The Morning. As usual, every song is performed in a precise yet heartfelt manner. If you dont own any cds by the Cambridge singers I would personally recommend Christmas Night as the first disk to own, but if you know and love the Cambridge Singers as I do, then you will enjoy having this wonderful addition to your library.
Superb voices!.......2003-12-22
This CD was beautifully sung by the Cambridge Singers, a boys/mens choir, mostly a' capela. It's the first Christmas CD I've bought that really tempts me to crank up the volume so I can revel in every note.

Customer Reviews:
Gay Boy Sucks!.......2006-01-04
This guy makes me cringe. He tells a magazine that the only thing he hasn't gained from making money from his records is a new boyfriend, what kind of message is that to the young? His music is all written for him and as for his look, its hardly the next best thing. Hyped up crap. And as for the film he has just made with people taking their clothes off, need I say more.
Gay boys rule!.......2005-02-22
Reality music competitions have always been a time for celebration. Who can forget Star Search, where Christina Aguilera and Destiny's Child first showcased their talents? Or Eurovision, which launched stars from Celine Dion to Dana International. Now with the sudden interest in reality, if you were to call it that, this phenomenon has flourished to its fullest. From O-Town being put together on TV to P. Diddy's Making the Band to Star Academy.
Pop Idol, a British TV show that grew to instant fame and became somewhat of an international trend, started the recent craze. While many tune in to watch what Simon Cowell has to say, sometimes the music is worthwhile. However, not many winners became stars.
Kelly Clarkson's finest hour came with the Aguilera-penned "Miss Independent." Ruben Studdard and Fantasia have yet to establish themselves. Across the Atlantic, the show's judging panel seems better equipped to pick out stars. Darius, Gareth Gates and Lemar have all managed to release hits songs. The winner, however, maintains his reign as Britain's best new pop act.
After winning, Will Young managed to release two adequate albums, even when they are high on cover versions and low on new material. His renditions are usually revamped versions of the older ones. He never delivers a track without a twist. His cover of the Doors' "Light My Fire" was made slow and chill, while his rehashing of Luther Vandross's "Love The One You're With" is, dare I say, better than the original.
Then there are the tracks that astound, like the simple, yet powerful "Leave Right Now." The standout track is definitely the gospel-tinted "Your Game," which recently won the Brit Award for best British single.
Then there are the tired template tracks, like "Stronger" and "Dance The Night Away." But the album is not totally made dull by these; it is carried by the singles and the closing 10 minute title track, which ends the album smoothly.
Friday's Child is better than From Now On and a definite growth from where Young started. Wavering between routine ballads and more than amusing soul tracks, it latches on as an effort by one gay boy with Aretha in his heart. Not bad from a dirty-shirted contestant who got in by singing a quirky version of "Blame It On The Boogie."
a surprise.......2004-11-16
i don't even know how i heard of this guy ,but i just spent all day working on my home and listening to this CD OVER AND OVER AGAIN.laid back and kind of jazzy ,this is a GREAT cd.some real standout songs ,but all the songs are listenable
Can't stop listening........2004-10-02
I liked his first album...but this one is so much better. Not hard music like you are used to hearing on the radio here in the U.S., but makes for a great sunday afternoon.
Good Effort........2004-08-17
I've not watched Will Young when he was in UK Idol - I'm not British. I'm not even bothered about the American Idol counterparts. But I sure am glad that I gave this guy a chance. Will has talent - and it's all in his voice.
Personally I like his first album better, it being tighter in
style and song writing. But since Friday's Child has more of
Will taking on song writing duties - it's only fair to cut him
some slack this time round.
Tracks I like:
3. Stronger (Very positive message - full of determination
in his voice)
4. Leave Right Now (This one I love - very heartfelt vocals, makes me tear when I hear it)
5. Love Is a Matter of Distance (Interesting lyrics - very tenderly sung)
9. Going My Way (Breezy song - guitar - very laidback)
11. Friday's Child
The title track Friday's Child is wonderfully breezy. I played this one sunny sunday afternoon while the wind blew in and couldn't help slow dancing/jiving to it. The song lasts a while and just takes you away - so carefree - I love it!
Altogether a good effort - soulful vocals plus mature breezy songs. Will's talent is undeniable - a cut above rest of the idol crap.

Unexpected Gem.......2005-12-10
A few years ago I took a chance on buying this album from Amazon and I've been glad I did ever since. The Emmanuel College Choir is not as well known as some of the other Cambridge choirs but they are on a par with the best of them. This choir has both male and female singers. The sound is pure and the diction is crystal clear. The musical selections are wonderful and include many less familiar songs as well as the old favorites. The choir does a good job in moving from more reverent songs to joyous ones. It's hard to single out any work but "Bethlehem Down" and "The Shepherd's Farewell" are especially beautiful. There are also some very fine solos in some of the songs. If you're wondering if you should buy this album, do yourself a favor and do it!

A Rich & Robust Score.......2001-06-19
Many of you, like me, may have been wondering what the difference is between this score and the one that was released in the early 90's, also on the Marco Polo label. Well firstly, the earlier release was not complete and also included tracks from House of Frankenstein. This new release basically happened because composer, John Morgan, was unhappy with the initial release and wanted another crack at this forgotten score. The result: a fully complete and terrific score from the 1942 Universal classic, Ghost of Frankenstein. Morgan was able to pull together the resources that Hans J. Salter himself did not have to record the original and give us the score as it was originally intended. Recorded under the supervision of Salter, just before he passed away, this is hands-down the best release of the monster scores from Marco Polo to date. Do not pass up.
Way over the top!.......2000-06-08
This music is far and away beyond being exceptional! Messrs. John Morgan and William Stromberg have yet again exceed their past triumphs (I have no clue how they keep doing this!). Where to begin? Perhaps, with some numbers: five stars (out of five) for restoration, arrangement/re-arrangement, and cue selection/editing; five stars for presentation (conducting and orchestral performance); five stars for recording and mastering; and five stars for the fascinating (and huge!) CD booklet courtesy of Messrs. Bill Whitaker and John Morgan (the photo on page 33 is worth the price of admission alone!). With a new orchestral venue and technical crew, Mr. Stromberg has once again "come into his own," acoustically speaking; the technical aspects of past recordings with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra has often been ham handed and uneven to the point of distraction. But the sound on these tracks is definitely 21st Century in quality! For those new to the neighborhood, just who are these two film composer folks--Frank Skinner and Hans J. Salter? Well, among other notable achievements, they saved many a Universal programmer during the late 30's and early-to-mid 40's (and very likely the studios's bacon to boot). When you view Universal's "second wave" of horror films even today, two things instantly grab your attention: the stunning photography and the inventive, pulsating music. "(These) pictures were a great challenge, because ... before scoring they didn't seem to have much fright about them or cohesion either. They'd screen one of those pictures for us without the music, and it would be nothing. The challenge was in creating the sense of terror and suspense, and that is something music can do. All the pictures we saved for them!" Mr. Salter is quoted as saying in the CD booklet. Like many of the film scores of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Salter and Skinner's music transcends and is enormously superior to the films for which they composed. Until Messrs. Morgan and Stromberg got the bit in their teeth, Salter and Skinner's film scores had served to elevate fair-to middling films, but, in turn, it was the poor reputation of these movies that served to suppress vastly underrated film music! NONE of this music has ever been heard like it is presented here. The Universal studio orchestra had barely 40 players; this CD uses a full symphony. Also, Mr. Morgan was able to work extensively with Mr. Salter on restorations during the final year's of the latter's long life. To quote Mr. Salter once more from the CD booklet, the executives at Universal "never knew what they had" in the way of music talent. I strongly recommend that you don't make the same mistake. Latch on to this CD while you still can!
Much of this shows its classical roots.......2000-05-17
Some music is great fun, either in itself or by personal associations or both. So when Marco Polo issued selections from the Salter/Skinner scores to "Son of Frankenstein," "The Invisible Man Returns," and "The Wolf Man" back in 1995 and followed up with the complete film score to "House of Frankenstein" by Salter and Dessau, I could not keep from grinning foolishly hearing it, all the time realizing how good some of it really was.
Now we have
(8.225124) that treat us to 22 cuts from "The Ghost of Frankenstein," 8 from "Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror," and a taste of three other films. The very generous program notes tell the whole story, with good lobbycard illustrations, of how this team worked together--one slept as the other worked--and I leave it to you to read all about it for yourself. As for the music itself, listen to the "Monster Theme" in the first suite and think if you will of how Wagner treated the "Dragon Leitmotif" in "Siegfried" to appreciate how classically grounded much of this music is in the tradition of Weber, Wagner, and even Richard Strauss. Not all of the selections are of high quality, but enough are to merit this offering a high rating.
Happy and spooky listening, folks.

Christus factus est.......2005-09-23
This disc concentrates on images of Christ in a capella music over the centuries. According to Rutter, 'Around the figure of Christ there has grown up over the centuries a body of choral literature that can only be described as among the most remarkable in western civilisation.'
--Music--
Selections on this disc come from all over the Western world. They range from as early as eleventh-century France to twentieth-century Russia, a millennium in song and composition. Rutter has selected five major themes - the Coming of Christ (Advent and Christmas), the Words of Christ (lesson texts and prayers, such as the Lord's Prayer, by Stravinsky), the Passion of Christ (Holy Week and Good Friday), the Resurrection and Ascension (Easter), and Christ in the Eucharist (worship and ongoing presence).
Here is a mixture of sacred compositions ranging from standard Gregorian chant and Sarum chant to medieval compositions from Palestrina, de Victoria and Byrd, up to more modern composers such as Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Bruckner, Barber, and Messiaen. This being said, Rutter states, 'The aim [of this disc] is not a liturgical reconstruction, nor an historical survey, but rather a journey of the imagination.'
--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words of each anthem or hymn, both in original language and English translation text. The notes for each piece also includes brief biographical information of the composer, and unique information about each work, when particular composers are represented more than once. One thing conspicuously missing is much biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers. Happily, this disc does have a list of the singers.
--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.
A fantastic recording.......2000-06-06
This collection of music from the last thousand years is masterful from start to finish. From well-known mainstays of choral repertoire such as Lotti's "Crucifixus" and Casals' "O Vos Omnes" to the more seldom heard pieces, such as Rachmaninov's setting of the Beatitudes, the listener is treated to musically sympathetic and disciplined performances. Even if, like me, you're not of a religious persuasion, you'll love every minute of it.
There are so many highlights to this album it becomes cruel to say any piece was not among them. The Barber Adagio/Agnus Dei is a masterwork, and the Cambridge Singers' discipline and pathos make the arrangement come alive in ways the strings simply can't.. The Lotti "Crucifixus" (an enduring classic), Casals "O Vos Omnes" (a beautiful and moving work, conveying the suffering of the Passion without garishness) and Byrd's enchanting "Viri Gallilei" are fantastic and provide more than enough reason to buy the album. The Messaien "O Sacrum Convivium," with its subtly sensuous harmonies and the Bairstow "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence" with its haunting melody and varied textures will silence any who say that church music has become a lost art in the 20th Century. Palestrina's phrases soar as though on the wings of angels (particularly in "Hodie Christus Natus Est.") And Bruckner, as always in his good moments, is as sexy as the Church would let him be.
While the inclusion of some Stanford or Tallis would have been fantastic, this album stands as one that should be in the library of anyone who loves choral music, along with "Hail Gladdening Light" and "Faire is the Heaven."
In short, BUY THIS ALBUM. You'll love it.
Exquisite!.......1999-03-08
The selections are gorgeously sung and spiritually moving beyond anything I can think of, right up there with Verdi's Requiem. My teen, who thinks rock music is the only music, was so moved by Samuel Barber's Agnus Dei, that she asked for her own copy of the CD. If you are already a believer, this music will remind you why you are. If not, it might just take you there.
Another sterling Cambridge Singers disc.......1998-09-10
This is a marvelous collection of choral music, notably Lotti's Crucifixus (in eight parts), and a stunning rendition of Barber's Agnus Dei (his choral arrangement of the Adagio for Strings, which was itself his arrangement for string orchestra of the Adagio from his String Quartet). Highly recommended!

Music for all ages, child to adult.......2002-08-18
Sydney Jill Lehman creates a CD which touches the hearts of young and old. Her music has feeling. Our family enjoys it very much, we drive listening to it, work around the house to it, relaxed with it, and it often lulls us to sleep. We like it so much, we bought several copies and gave them as gifts. We can't wait for her to release her next CD. You can't go wrong by ordering it.

Worth Listening To!!!.......2005-09-29
When I went to border's, I heard that Friday's Child was playing there to support their new cd, "In a Word." I decided that I wanted to hear them play. I found out that they were amazing!!! I decided to get the cd. When I got home, I started to listen to it, and I thought that the live preformance was better, but the cd was still very good. I now listen to it pretty often. Their music was the kind of music that I like to listen to. I think it is a good cd to buy!!!
Great Band.......2005-09-02
They're a great band, what more can I say. This is another great CD, after 'Boy Without a Name' , 13 and their Live CD. They're raw and have a lot of energy. The songwriting skills of Tom Walker are probably one of the best out there..... pity that the mainstream media has missed out on this great band. This band is what the music scene needs today.
Great New Band!!!.......2005-08-18
Finally there's a new band that can actually write songs! I got this CD about a week ago, and I haven't stopped listening to it. Most of the new stuff out there sounds the same not only band to band, but song to song. These guys have a unique sound as a band. It is accoustic guitar driven, but very powerful. Sort of a stripped down Dave Matthews Band vibe with a harder sound like early Live. Each song is unique as well. There is obviously no "formula" these guys use when they write. You have a song like "Flypaper" that has a bouncy, raw sound, "Lions Fall" that is majestic and moving and "Blood Moon" that has a "poppy" feel, just to name a few. They have a couple earlier CD's that I just ordered. I can't wait 'til they arive.

Simply Brilliant.......1999-08-29
This band combines the best elements from bands like Dave Matthews Band, Matchbox 20 and even a little bit of Billy Joel thrown in for good measure. It all sounds really great.
Fantastic Songs-Insightful Lyrics-Superb Musicianship.......1999-06-18
Boy Without a Name is a tremendous debut recording for Friday's Child. Not only can this 3 man band play memorable notes, Tommy Walker will blow you away with his soul searching, intelligent lyrics. From the hard hitting song Attention to the soothing, acoustically bent North by Northeast, these songs will leave you wishing for more. I've heard that they will be releasing a new CD sometime during the summer of 1999. I can't wait! Until then, I will continue to catch them in concert halls and clubs in Manhattan and the rest of the Tri-State area.
This band is great...What else have they done?.......1999-03-11
This band is fresh...great lyrical songwriting with catchy, intelligent tunes...vocals are excellent and the musicianship is superb. Bravo!

Hope For Music Scene Yet.......2005-09-06
I discovered them by accident, playing at a bookstore no less... and I hung around for another hour or so, as their music and energy was out of this world... Tom Walker has an excellent stage presence and his songs are wonderful.... I got this cd and listened to it over and over again. The energy that they have Live is missing from this CD.... but given the excellent quality of the lyrics and music, you'll overlook that...
With bands like fridays child, there's hope for the music scene yet!
One of the best albums in a long while..........2001-01-23
Friday's Child is a wonderful and unique band that have a lot of energy. They write original, good music and heart felt lyrics. I just ADORE this band to death. Ever since I discovered them, I haven't missed a show. The album is awesome as well. It's one of the best I've heard in a long while--adding diversity and originality to a time when, sadly, others sell out. I gaurentee you'll LOVE this album!
Simply amazing.......2000-08-05
I can't begin to say just how much I love this CD...these guys know their intsrtuments, have great voices, and a ton of energy! I've seen them preform many times at the Garden State Plaza, and every time, I love them more and more. They write good music that people can appreciate and are a true treasure in today's world of "lost music".
Friday's Child - not your typical bar band.......1999-10-29
If you like Dave Matthews or Billy Joel, you'll love Friday's Child. I've had this album for quite some time and have never tired of hearing these songs. Tunes like 'The Path' and 'Icon' have become the soundtrack to my life. 'North By Northeast' is an amazing number. I've witnessed Friday's Child play this song live at the Baggot Inn and the Lion's Den in NYC and it's flat-out incredible. The way these three musicians handle their instruments is nothing short of genius.
One final note - Friday's Child have recently released a six-song EP entitled '13' that's just as masterful as this one.
