4 out of 5 stars Best Comprehensive Survey of Canadian Music Available.......1999-01-19

This anthology of three Centuries(!) of Canadian music was assembled by a former producer from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation who now works for Naxos Canada. This producer is also active in the Canadian music world, so he knows whereof he speaks (or selects, as in this case). Liscensing the best performances available from major Canadian and International labels, this is the best collection of, and introudction to, the entire Canadian music scene that I have ever come across. The booklet is informative and is as enjoyable a read as is the 2 CD set is to listen. I doubt there will ever be anything quite like it again. If only NAXOS would now start recording Canadian music on top of the Canadian artists they already record, than they will truly have one of the finest and most comprehensive classical catalogues in the world. As for now, don't pass this one up.

      1 out of 5 stars ?????.......2006-10-04

Just listening to these sound clips-I can't believe velvet revolver would release such an album. I can appreciate string quartets...but this is absolutely unbelievable. I wonder what would have made them release this? This is NOT rock at all. And four string instruments are no way going to capture the essence of Contraband. I am just in awe that this type of cd exists. No vocals or guitar or drums...Just a string quartet. This is SO not rock n roll....I HOPE the album that they are releasing soon is not going to end up like this...Talk about the downfall of rock n roll.

4 out of 5 stars can't get enough of it.......2005-08-28

If you're like me, and can't get enough of the original album by Velvet Revolver, I think you'll love this. Each song is well done by the four performers, I actually find myself singing to the songs. I have a 5 disc changer at home, and have the original album in the first position followed by this tribute to Velvet Revolver. My ONLY complaint is that I kinda wished that they had someone play a little percussion for each song (ex: the string quartet tribute to guns n roses). But that's entirely okay. It's easy to make the rythem of each song. In fact, there is an awesome slide performed at the beginning of "Headspace" that I didn't know could be done by a violin. There's a treat at the end of the album, a song called .50 calliber, written by the director of the string quartet. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

5 out of 5 stars How AWESOME !!!!!!!.......2005-07-18

This is so freakin' cool! I am a HUGE fan of Velvet Revolver and I play violin in my High School's Ochestra. I would have never thought of a string group even attempting to play Velvet Revolver.
I was searching Velvet Revolver to read some of their reviews for fun, and when I scrolled to the bottom of the screen I saw this CD. I played all of the samples. I was amazed at how well these people played the songs. They sound exactly like Velvet Revolver (except for the obvious fact that they play different instruments)!!!!!!!
I am going to buy this CD as soon as I pay off my debt to my mother for buying Velvet Revolver concert tickets online.

P.S. For anyone that cares, the concert is at Soaring Eagle Casino (Mt. Pleasent,MI) on Aug. 11th.

      ~YOU SHOULD GO~

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing, with such talent on show........2005-05-10

The performances are generally not very inspiring. Catherine King is usually smooth on the ear, but here, her exaggerated use of period English accent is annoying and distracting.
The recorded sound is also overly bright for my taste.
In all, there are perhaps three tracks on this disc I would enjoy hearing again. The rest are well below expectations.

      3 out of 5 stars So So.......2003-12-24

This is a selection of some of Dowland's most famous pieces performed in appropriate Renaissance style. Unfortunately, the quality of the performances is mixed. Some pieces are performed very well, others not. The singer on this CD, Catherine King, is inconsistent. In some songs, like "Come again, sweet love..." she is good. In others, her diction and phrasing is suspect. I may also be put off by her apparently strong Scots accent. Choice of tempi in several pieces is poor. A couple of Dowland's most famous songs are represented by instrumental versions, which are nice, but pale compared with the actual songs.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Ballad Accompanied By A Ripping Cover. .......2004-12-13

By now it should be known by all that Velvet Revolver, the ultimate fusion of Guns N' Roses with Stone Temple Pilots, is no failure and they have conquered the current American rock scene. If anything they prove veterans can still rock harder and meaner than any new Punk band. Their first single of their debut "Contraband," "Slither," was a crawling, almost tribal jam with Scott Weiland evoking to Slash's sonic assault. But now we have "Fall To Pieces," the single that proves the guys also have heart. It's a lovely power ballad with some great melodies coming off the strings and Weiland not sounding fake but like an authentic frontman letting out some angst. Slash's solo is an intricate example of the days when real metal trotted the Earth. The song slowly builds up to a stunning climax with both passion and fury. One of the treats here is a cover of Cheap Trick's "Surrender," the band breathes life into the song with ferocious energy and style. The chorus soars and it's simply a great cover of an already great song. And of course there's the video for "Fall To Pieces" which is gritty and almost disturbing, showcasing the realities of Weiland's more insane, drug-binging days. A strong video for a strong song. For those interested I suggest to purchase their entire debut, for those who only enjoyed this little tune this is the CD to get.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated Melodic Metalcore Brilliance.......2006-10-19

If there is one band that can execute the hardcore tinged melodeath subgenre well, it is Dead To Fall. True, it won't match up to the greats like At The Gates and Dark Tranquillity, but it's still a great listen. The breakdowns on this album are executed nicely, and the lead melodic guitars are done well. Vocal range is good. Not groundbreaking, but for those who despise clean singing, well, Dead To Fall doesn't use ANY clean vocals at all. Tracks like "Eternal Gates of Hell" show the bands semi-progressive nature, and "Memory" has a great bitter intro to it. If you want something melodic and will get your head banging to its beats, Dead To Fall's got the goods.

3 out of 5 stars It's been done, and much better........2004-08-17

Ok, Dead To Fall is nothing new or different, not particulary powerful, sonically crushing, agonizingly emotional, etc, etc, etc. They're the kind of 'metalcore' band that makes we wince a bit when I say that word. They've got the long-time-standard breakdowns, those "dun-dun-dadadada-dun-dun" mid-tempo, 4/4 time, open-E and double bass, Shadow's Fall without the groove, crappy breakdowns. Actually, that's probably my biggest gripe about this album... I've heard bands with no real discernable talent at all who can still pull off some decent breakdowns.

As for the rest, it's basically a mix of As I Lay Dying, a little thrashy late-90s death metal, and a bit of mid-years Enslaved-style melodic black metal, which is cool in theory, but very poorly executed. The occasional blast parts are luke-warm, and the crap drum production really doesn't help their cause at all.

They're solid, yeah, but the songwriting has few peaks and valleys, so the album as a whole is a tedious listen with little that sticks in your head.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2004-06-20

Dead to Fall's brutal, beautiful debut album is the greatest metalcore release I have ever heard. From the pulverizing fury of "Eternal Gates of Hell" to the placid acoustic tinklings of "Doraematu," this is an album that, from start to finish, yields a wise, stirring, resonant and cohesive musical experience (in an era of the excessive guitar noodling and indulgent production, a la Bleeding Through or Soilwork). It's hard to believe that the authors of this masterpiece are still in college!

          3 out of 5 stars Potential.......2004-01-24

Caught somewhere between Atreyu and Zao is Dead To Fall and while "Everything I Touch Falls To Pieces" isn't a bad album it certainly didn't blow me away either. And while this is a very average album in the metalcore genre, there is definetly potential. Unfortunetly what lacks mostly in this album is the vocals. Jonathan Hunt sounds like many of the Zao vocalists that we have heard in the past crossed with some death metal growls but he lacks in vocal range and it feels like his vocals almost dull the album. Musically, however, the album is pretty good. With songs like "Like A Bullet" and "Graven Image", the band does have a good start and a promising future as long as Hunt can improve his vocals.

          4 out of 5 stars ...for all you no-talent @$$clowns! (part II).......2003-12-20

Once again, I have been forced to write yet another review that has absolutely nothing to do with the band or cd. Hoenstly, I have only heard Dead to Fall once, but from what I heard they sound fairly good and I would suggest that anyone who has any sense or knowledege of metal should look into this album. Now, down to business. Thos of you who believe that treu metal is Limp Bizkit, KoRn, or Rob Zombie, well, you most likely need to be hit in the face with a brick. That's right, a brick. You obviously know absolutely nothing about metal and should feel very ashamed of yourself for thinking otherwise. If you want a true metal band try Vital Remains for starters. They are the real deal when it comes to black/death/satanic metal. Now, back to the matters at hand. If you want to like Rob Zombie, go ahead. But, don't try to make yourself feel "hardcore" because you do listen to %&$*. That isn't something you should be flaunting around. You might get your @$$ kick as you very well deserve to. So next time you think you are making some big profound musical stand point by stating that you listen to modern day Nu-Metal crap, just remember how much of a dumb@$$ you truely are and hopefully you will either beat yourself senseless with something heavy, perferrably a brick, or just run and hide in the shadows so that society may one day return to a normal state, where people aren't total idiots.

Part My Bloody Valentine - part Swervedriver - one of the most underappeciated bands I know. Uneven recording and sloppy playing only help to make this CD a masterpiece. One song is so good, they put it on their twice!!
