Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Denali takes their name from the Athapascan word for Alaska's Mount McKinley, The highest mountain in North America. The meaning they impart is fairly obvious - cold, remotely desolate, permanent - something that parallels the sound they forge. Since sharing the stage with bands such as The Faint, Pinback, Sparklehorse, Tristeza, Rainer Maria and The Lapse, the band caught the ears of Sparklehorse frontman Mark Linkous who has produced a couple songs. 4 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful Alt/Chillout Music........2006-09-26

From the first moment that I heard the vocals on this album, I was hooked. Denali play an eclectic style of alternative rock, with cool, spacey reverb-drenched guitar, jazz-lounge style percussion, and almost emo-like lyrics full of ambiguous loss and confusion. This is all fine and good, but the singer, Maura Davis, simply has one of the most beautiful, emotive and ethereal voices I have ever heard.....simply mesemerizing. Her vocal style really sets this band apart, and combined with the slowly wandering and hypnotic music, creates a stark, melancholy space in my head. Sort of like what would happen if you combined a better, more sensual Portishead with Doves.....Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars bye.......2004-05-11

we will miss denali <3
even though they broke up and wont be making any more music, the music that is out there is great!

5 out of 5 stars lush like snow.......2004-03-14

denali call their music "gentle rock"...but it's far from gentle. emotionally jarring but beautiful, the vocals are reminiscent of beth gibbons from portishead, but with a bit stronger high end....at one soft and loud, denali bridge a gap between trip-hop, ambient and indie rock, and bless 'em for it.

4 out of 5 stars amazingly beautiful.......2004-02-02

the first song that i heard from this record was prozac. and i was hooked. maura davis from denali brings forth a sound which combines modern day indie rock w/ a classical texture. its an amazing album that can be listened to repeatdley for hours on end only to realize that every song is perfected. The blend of each instrument catered to maura's amazing voice.

5 out of 5 stars A great unknown band.......2003-12-03

One listen to the song Gunner showed me why this band has the talent to go far in the music business. This CD on a whole is wonderful, the song "Lose Me" shows the range of Maura's voice, and the wandering piano in "Function" shows a real maturity. While I've heard Maura's voice compared to Beth from Portishead, I don't think Maura's voice is that mature yet, but given the band's relatively young age, this band should have a great future, and this is a great starting point.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars.......2007-03-21

I am in love with her voice, i love when a women sings like this different ranges, volumes etc, the band has a really cool sound too, very creative. It can be a little haunting and spooky at times though so be prepared.

5 out of 5 stars a band that is special to me. an album that is worthy........2004-04-28

I've truly loved Denali since I first heard their first album. This album is amazing and has stayed in my CD rotation since it's release. Also, Maura Davis' voice is beautiful, alluring and relaxing.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth, haunting, original, intense..........2004-03-14

The only people I've heard that gripe about Denali are the ones who say the girl's voice is too loud. I love it. She can go from a loud mournful wail to a smooth, breathy voice that sends shivers up your spine (especially if you hear it live.) The band's tunes range from fast and intense to dark and haunting. As for the band changes, I heard absolutely no difference in performance when I heard them at Alley Katz- the crew did a fine job, and with two new people I think?

Lucky for me their band is from my hometown.

4 out of 5 stars Takes a little getting used to.......2003-12-03

I first heard of Denali through their first CD and was blown away by the quality for an independent CD. There was so much emotion behind the words, I would almost go out on a limb and compare them to Portishead. Enter the second CD, Instinct. I picked up a copy of this a couple of weeks before it came out at a concert and the first listen, none of the songs really hit me. However, subsequent listens have shown me that this CD is very different, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. There aren't really any of the slow "ballad" type songs that I think help make the first CD great, such as Lose Me or Relief. With the word that half of the band has quit, it will remain to see where the music goes from here, but with a voice like Maura's, like the sky is the limit.

4 out of 5 stars IMPRESSIVE!!!.......2003-11-24

Despite what ROCKETSREDGLARE has to say about this record...it's very hard to resist! Stop being the comic book store guy from the simpsons and lighten up, or go bury your self in a cave with your Roky Erickson records. Considering these kids are on a record label that still doesn't have printed barcodes on the sleeves means they most likely aren't angling for Evanesence's throne! More aptly, I hear Bjork, Beth Gibbons, Shirley Bassy, and Alison Goldfrapp backed by DJ Shadow and Pretty Girls Make Graves mellower tendencies. I purchased this record yesterday and have listened to it four or five times since, and keep hearing more things i like about it with each listen. Seeing as trip hop's moment came and went about three years ago, i don't think this will be on TRL anytime soon. If you are interested in stepping out of the indie hipster huddle, pick this up and take a nap with its beautiful vocals and lush textures. If not, buy more Cat Power albums, shuffle down to the cafe and complain about how this isn't as good as Broadcast's last record!
