Rick Wakeman first came to the publics eye performing with David Bowie on the Space Oddity album in 1969; he subsequently joined the British prog-folk band Strawbs the following year. He stayed with that band for two albums (Just A Collection Of Antiques And Curios and From The Witchwood), and was recruited by the more rock-oriented band Yes. Wakemans debut with that band, Fragile, is generally considered to be one of the great prog-rock albums of all time. By his own estimation, he has appeared on over 2000 tracks by artists as diverse as Black Sabbath, Elton John and Lou Reed. The six tracks on Rick Wakemans 1977 album, Criminal Record, share a common theme: transgression. From the comparatively obscure (Birdman Of Alcatraz) to the infamous (Judas Iscariot), Wakeman employs his keyboard wizardry to devastating effect. As with earlier solo works such as The Six Wives Of Henry VIII and King Arthur, Wakeman uses a central theme as a springboard to give flight to his musical fantasia. Packaged in original LP artwork reconfigured to an oversized heavy board minijacket wrapped with an iridescent stock, includes a translucent sleeve to protect the CD, Criminal Record also comes with a four-colour 9-inch by 9-inch mini-poster. It is a numbered limited edition, with each copy individually foil-stamped.

Statue of Justice/Crime of Passion/Chamber of Horrors/Birdman of Alcatraz/The Breathalyser/Judas Iscariot
Originally released fall 1977 on A&M (I have the LP). Only a thousand or two of this CD have been pressed. Apart from some spoken word and a large Swiss choir chanting on "Judas Iscariot", this is another instrumental release. This was recorded in Switzerland, where Rick was living as a tax dodge at the time. "White Rock" had been released earlier that year. There was no solo album in 1978. Rick was also back in Yes (second of five times!; Chris Squire and Alan White cameo here). A woman found at a local pub was brought in to scream at the end of "Chamber of Horrors".

Almost his very best.......2005-07-18

This was a good time for Rick. In the midst of the "Going For The One" sessions, back with Chris and Alan, getting his hands on a massive church organ... he was in a very good mood.
In it's own way it was the opposing bookend to 'Six Wives' and compositionally it is better constructed, but I can't take "The Breathalyser" as a serious component of anotherwise seamless listening experience.
For this track I deduct half a star.
The other half is for Ricks overuse of his new toy - the thin sounding Polymoog.
It was responsible for the harpooned whale solo on Tormato.
It was good for that.

I just got the cd, I was expecting something rather low sound quality with static and all and I was surprised to hear a really detailed, beautiful clear sound. I got a $700 dollar pear of Dynaudio speakers and I rearly run into quality like this outside of the audiophile world. the musik is of course an absolute must to all Rick fans.

another neglected gem.......2004-02-25

In spite of being a huge Yes fan, i have to say that i consider many of Wakeman's records weak or not particularly inspired. Nevertheless, i think that 'Criminal Records' is probably his best yet. This is progressive music at its best, inspired by classical composers, but without being pretentious or overwhelming; quite the opposite, it flows graciously in a noble atmosphere mirroring the themes of crime and passion. The opener 'Statue of Justice' is simply stunning, as is the impressive closer 'Judas Iscariot'; however, my favorite track is the lovely 'Birdman of Alcatraz', an only-piano song with a touching melodie that describes briliantly the moving story of a convict sentenced to life in that infamous prison, who dedicated his time to the study of birds. The painful contrast of an imprisoned man versus the careless and free flights of birds is masterfully captured by Wakeman's music, in one of his best compositions ever. The price for the imported item is a little heavy, that's true, mas anyone who can afford it shouldn't hesitate, for it's worthy. An excelent (criminal) record.

One of Wakey's best.......2003-12-25

Criminal Record comes from a time when Rick Wakeman's musical creativity was at its peak - during the 80s he didn' write much that came up to the same levels, with the exception of '1984'.

Rick recorded this album right after he rejoined Yes in 1977 and they had completed Going for the One at Montreux in Switzerland. Chris Squire and Alan White both volunteered to play on Rick's album and recorded their parts after he had laid down the keyboard tracks and gone home, an unusual arrangement but I guess it was Rick's album so he got what he wanted. It doesn't seem to matter - it all seems very integrated, especially on a track like Crime of Passion with Squire's trademark melodic bass well to the fore.

It's only six tracks, based upon a theme of crime and punishment. Like Six Wives, the theme is really a vehicle to tie the album together rather than a true exploration of the concept as in the Arthur, Journey or No Earthly Connection albums. However it doesn't matter how loose the theme is, the music is very tight, very innovative and Rick's writing and arrangements show a lot of maturity and depth.

The outstanding track is the last one, Judas Iscariot, a grand, soaring piece which explores the tragic nature of the man and his circumstance. Wakeman uses the Vevey church organ which appears on Going for the One to great effect - its lavish pipes rumble everywhere on this track and others. I especially like the blend of church organ and Moog, where the two instruments appear to imitate each other, with Rick using the piano for tonal contrast or emphasis instead - it's unusual in that you'd expect piano and church organ together with Moog as contrast, but this is quite a different effect.
Rick uses choir to give a pastoral and valedictory feel to the piece and his piano lilts are exquisite. There's a certain five-note chromatic run repeated during this track which gave rise to conjecture that Andrew Lloyd Webber had pinched it and incorporated it into Phantom of the Opera, which was released in 1980. Not only the melody but the entire operatic feel of the song is very Phantom-ish - or Phantom is very Judas-like! You'll notice it immediately, however despite dark mutterings the lawsuit didn't prosper (Lloyd Webber probably had better lawyers anyway. . .)

Judas is the best track but that is not to denigrate the other five. The opening track, Statue of Justice, is an abstract piece of genius, fresh and innovative and alive, and a departure from Wakeman's usual style, which is a nice surprise. Really there isn't a bad track at all. Crime of Passion is lush and romantic, Birdman of Alcatraz delicate and the Breathalyser quirky and humorous. Probably Chamber of Horrors is my least favourite but that's only cos it's not as brilliant as the others.

What's good about this album is the balance of keys, other instruments and voices - nothing seems to dominate, and Rick's trademark keyboard runs seem essential to the pieces rather than there for their own sake, a crime of which he is guilty on a few occasions elsewhere in his career (like going to see a movie with special effects, rather than a special effects movie, if you know what I mean.)

One of Wakeman's best. Everything incorporated here that he is brilliant at doing, and nothing that he is no good at all at doing (e.g. lyrics, vocalists!) It's tight and gets better with repeated listenings.

honestly, if you are just getting into Wakeman's world of music this record should be the first one to obtain. it is by far unic and a masterpiece of one of a kind!!! Kari Vaczy
