Amazon.com's Best of 1998

Although this collection intends to transport the soul, it has a tremendously potent low-end depth to it that earns high marks indeed in the worlds of vocal and liturgical music. Dmitri Bortniansky's "Hymn of the Cherubim" is performed with a gracefulness that gets a warming fatness from the production, as does Alexander Gretchaninov's "I Have Chosen the Blissful," which travels with a ringing resonance. In a year of fine choral works--check out Sequentia's Hildegard cycle box, 900 Years or Arvo Pärt's Kanon Pokajanen for a "something old, something new" mix--this collection is highly valued for its sonic integrity and its excellent anthological mix. --Andrew Bartlett

Words cannot describe poignantly enough the exquisite, angelic voices that permeate the heart and exalt the soul on Sacred Treasures. The most highly regarded Russian and Bulgarian choirs sing the hymns of Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Lvovski, and other composers in the Russian Orthodox Church's tradition of "Divine Worship" (worship through chant). From the first tolling bells that open the CD with a willowy, floating piece from Rachmaninov's Liturgy of St. John, to the final bells closing the door on "Hymn of the Cherubim" (Grigory Lvovski), this CD creates a gentle, distinctly Byzantine glory. The rhythms slowly wisp along while the choirs' baritones, tenors, and sopranos mesh into one expansive blessing. Meant to comprehensively gather not all Russian liturgical pieces but rather hymns that emote an inner tranquility and celestial grace, Sacred Treasures plays like a piece of heaven on Earth. --Karen Karleski

5 out of 5 stars Inner beauty.......2007-02-07

The sense of beauty emerge within us as these chorals fill the space of our head and heart. A music written by real masters and interpreted by voices rarely heard. Beautiful.

One of the best renditions of the Orthodox Liturgy most famous hymns.

A terrific production...a wonderful selection; great phrasing. See also "Holy Love" by 'Rossica Choir'

5 out of 5 stars Divine Beauty and Peace! .......2006-12-03

I am the producer of this CD and also of "SACRED TREASURES III: Choral Masterworks From Russia and Beyond" as well as "SACRED TREASURES IV: Quiet Prayers" and "CELTIC TWILIGHT 7: Sacred Spirit". In each case, my intention was to bring together the very best performances of exceptionally beautiful, slow and peaceful sacred music. Most of the pieces on this compilation (as on the other compilations mentioned above) are filled with lush harmonies sung by large mixed choirs. All the selections are deeply nourishing to the soul.

In many cases, I chose to use excerpts from longer pieces, omitting the exultant huge crescendos and very fast sections that are typical of Russian sacred music, presenting only the slow and quiet verses. One reviewer complained about the omission of the final (loud and fast) part of the Cherubic hymns, saying this is the best part, but I completely disagree! I feel that the slow "adagio" sections are by far the most beautiful parts, and that is what you will hear on these CDs.

Different types of music serve different needs, and in today's stressful and fast-paced world, one of the most important and often neglected needs is for time out from that world--to "lay aside all earthly cares" (as the "Cherubic Hymns" on this CD prescribe) and to rest in a magical, quiet space of slow, peaceful, beauty. That peaceful beauty is available to you on all of these albums, including this one, "SACRED TREASURES: Choral Masterworks from Russia"!

3 out of 5 stars A Soviet version of Russian music.......2006-05-29

I admit to some strong bias here, having sung on the recording of Tchaikovsky's Liturgy available here from the Russian Chamber Chorus of New York. I was in that choir for five years, and our conductor's view of how to properly interpret Russian music became my own.

Because of Stalin's efforts to cleanse the country of the influence of religion, many musicians and composers were sent to Siberia. They were replaced with those from peasant backgrounds. The result was a huge change in how classical Russian music was performed, becoming less subtle, more interested in brute power and flash.

This recording features a massive and powerful choir. But the listener mostly hears a series of vowel sounds, with the consonants lost in the shuffle. Dynamic range is not as large as it could be. Phrasing is largely absent and we hear a steady wall of sound instead. Precision of rhythm is spotty, what consonants we do hear are frequently smeared. Pitch and richness of tone are good, but on high notes, inevitably given the size of the choir, some members strain.

Having performed and recorded Tchaikovsky's Liturgy I am very familiar with the piece. But listening to this recording of excerpts from it I sometimes barely recognized it as the same work. Tchaikovsky gives us great artistry, frequently crecendos and decrecendos on a single phrase. Each choral voice comes and goes like a wave, not all together like a tsunami in all but a few places. The balance of voices is constantly moving.

I encourage you to listen to the samples available here of the Russian Chamber Chorus's recording of Tchaikovsky's Liturgy, compare the same pieces. This recording is more a Vegas neon version of this great artwork than the fine art it deserves to be shown as. James Oestreich, the New York Times critic, put the Russian Chamber Chorus recording at #4 on his top ten list of classical releases for 2001, and said that if you had not heard it "You only think you know Tchaikovsky."

I hope you give the real Russian classical tradition a listen. It deserves your time, and it will pay you back with a huge amount of pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent option at good price.......2007-03-25

Ortodox liturgic music is sometimes as difficult as it can be considering the fact it belong to a very different liturgy no matter how christian it is.
This little gem can be helpful to understand not only this very important part of russian music but the soul of russian religiosity, guided by the superb performance of Novospassky Monastery Choir, that reminded me other great effort in the same way: the Choir of Santo Domingo de Silos Monastery.
Not always Naxos is the best choice, but in this case is definitely a must for those interested on religious music.
Five stars.

5 out of 5 stars It Touches the Soul.......2005-05-02

This cd is balanced with the melodic strains of the choir, and the rich, deep solos above it. It is an inspiration and I highly recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Performance is fine, but recording and liner notes are poor.......2004-10-13

RUSSIAN DIVINE LITURGY is a performance by the Novospassky Monastery Choir of the Russian Orthodox liturgy celebrated by a bishop. The music of the Russian Orthodox liturgy consists only of the human voice singing in the Russian Church Slavonic language (a redaction of Old Church Slavonic made easier for speakers of Russian to pronounce). No instrumentation is included.

There is a great deal of passion in this performance as in the "Trisagion". There is also grace and sweetness, as in the "Great Litany" or the recitation of the Nicene Creed. This recording portrays those aspects of Orthodox worship which have wowed members of other denominations with their beauty and profound sincerity.

Though the performance was fine, the sound quality of this recording is unimpressive. Though a DDD studio recording, the engineers did not really explore the space of the venue and the voices are often muddled and indistinguishable. This probably would have sounded better in a church than in a studio with these engineers.

The liner notes are also of rather poor quality, as is unfortunately quite common with Naxos discs. There is no libretto, just excepts from several of the portions and descriptions. Church Slavonic text is missing entirely. The names of the Ukrainian cities Kyiv and Lviv are spelled according to the (often considered offensive) Russian manner of Kiev and L'vov. The commentary, which do not appear professionally edited, are uncredited.

If you are interested in Church Slavonic liturgy in music, I would recommend Arvo Part's setting of the "Kanon Pokajanen" penitence text. The disc released by ECM New Series features a detailed libretto with the Church Slavonic, fine translations, and an essay about this portion of Orthodox liturgy. Naxos has released here an authentic and sincere performance of the liturgy, but the poor liner notes and sound quality do little to recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Inexpensive marvel from naxos.......2003-07-16

As someone new to choral sacred music, the price of this CD allowed me to experiment without risking to much financially.
I have never heard Russian Orthodox music before. It is more exuberant in many ways than western massesbut also has moments of serenity. This CD contains an amalgam of music from different cenuries which all fits together surprisingly well. The choir sings powerfully from start to fini. Highly recommended to anyone interested in the music of other cultures.

5 out of 5 stars Is like being in Heaven!.......2003-06-29

Beautiful version of the Orthodox Liturgy. If you aren't Orthodox, this might convert you. If you already are, it will bring tears of joy to your eyes.

The Delgados are precisely what you'd expect from a Scottish band named after Spanish cycling champion Pedro Delgado: brilliant, mercurial, fiercely independent, and more than a bit eccentric. On the quartet's third album, The Great Eastern, they explore symphonic pop in a glorious sweep of sound that recalls the Flaming Lips or Lambchop more than Scottish twee-pop peers Belle & Sebastian. Co-leaders Emma Pollock and Alun Woodward neatly balance each other. She has the better voice and prettier melodies to sing; his vocal warts offer a character-actor charm all their own. Together, they deliver an album full of graceful brushstrokes and slightly (but delightfully) askew ambition. --Keith Moerer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recomended.......2004-03-23

Few bands are a consistantly brilliant as the Delgados. Forget not releasing a bad album, the Delgados haven't even released a bad song. With the relese of Hate last year, I went through their back catalog and was plesently surprised, especially with this one. Their albums definantly stand the test of time. Their are a lot of great bands from Glasgow (Belle and Sebastian, Mogwai, ect...), but the Delgados are far more consistant than those bands and I find myself listening to "The Great Eastern" far more than "The Boy With the Arab Strap".

3 out of 5 stars The Great Eastern. A great CD........2004-03-02

'The Great Eastern' takes The Delgados sound a step higher from the Pavement-like 'Peloton'. A more polished and smoother production, lush and layered sound, along with orchestral strings, wind instruments and piano. Emma Pollock's vocals has this naive childlike pout about them, charming yet oozes sincerity. The Delgados still retain enough guitar-oomph to satisfy indie fans, yet the arrangements are far more textured, along with this soothing lullaby quality that strings all the songs together. Each track also tends to have these musicbox-type interludes, overall making for an interesting sound. It's not about high's and low's anymore, but about soft colors and subtle shades. This CD is a departure from their earlier gritty guitar sound, but what it lacks in rawness is compensated by grandiosity and songs of comfort. Listening to this album is like peering through a dark tunnel and seeing a light, and finding hope.

4 out of 5 stars relax - its about the music!.......2003-03-11

...The Delgados are truly wonderful composers of music that has many depths and layers. Ironically, they also can sound quite bare.

For those who fail to see the connections between, say a Soft Bulletin or a Deserter's songs, might I add that Dave Fridmann produced all three records (buy them all - they're all gggreat or grate as they say in the UK).

This Delgado's album is simply a harder edged Bulletin or Mercury Rev album. They are all unique but they share the glorious production of Dave Fridmann.

God bless Emma, Alun, Stuart, and Paul and their session musicians for making a remarkable piece of art that will last forever.

P.S. Check out their recent album, HATE. It lacks the edge that 'Eastern' has but is beautiful in its own right.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful........2002-08-23

I have recommended this cd to anyone who would listen. It is one of the best pop albums I've ever heard. While I love both Mercury Rev and Flaming Lips, I think the Great Eastern is quite different from both "Desserts Songs" and "Soft Bulletin". And I agree that the subtle beauty comes out after extensive listening. I'm constantly amazed by it. In my most passionate moments, I've called "The Great Eastern" pop music at its best. I know that was a gross exaggeration and probably would make a lot of people angry, but it still get that same feeling everytime I listen to it. Buy it. You don't want to miss this one. The odd thing is, I could not imagine the leap from "Domestique" to TGE. Hopefully I'll find the connection when I get a copy of "Peloton".

5 out of 5 stars Ethereal and ardent.......2002-06-04

Enumerated so after the remote Glasgow anodyne and beverage refuge The Great Eastern augments even surges sensuously and crumbles lustrously. The assemblage portrays fa?des and the remorse from the communal commonwealth germane to the penury. Ethereal crescendos and medleys of cadence and nature emerge throughout. The magnum opus furthermore consummates and amalgamates brass threads and flute to grace the dolour the assemblage concurs. Moreover the m?ange between the vocals of Alun Woodward and Emma Pollock procures solace and hence hope appears to portray the allured pathos. For succour proves apropos. Beauty and grandeur have proved to be the foremost hope for the serene assemblage. And moreover gestures poetry and prudence.

An excellent recording-with exception of the engineering. Having attended a concert of choral music from the Ukraine, I find this recording faithfully follows all the whisper quiet to needing earplugs in your ears volume. The music is performed admirably, and the diction is good - I would be able to understand the words if I understood Russian. In the Russian tradition, the pieces are all acapella, and well done. In my humble opinion, this is a very good buy if you are interested in Russian choral music.

I am surprised that no one else has reviewed this album. Most likely it's because it's not terribly well known.

Anyway, this is an absolutely gorgeous sampling of Russian Orthodox Church music. The Italian baroque influences are evident in some of the pieces, but the rich Russian chordal style always comes through.

The voices are transcendent, and truly evoke a sense of the sacred. If you are ever feeling angry, sad, hurt or stressed out, this is the perfect album to put you at ease. Track 19 will take your breath away.

    5 out of 5 stars goralska muyzka.......2003-12-19

This is for the person who wrote the comment saying " the singing was really bad." That is the way it is supposed to sound. You try to sing like that and see if you can master it.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-07-14

This cd would be great if it had about maybe 1/2 the songs. The individual songs are good, but most of them sound pretty much alike. The few selections from the 'bandit dance' genre are especially captivating, but even with those, after 3 songs I feel I've gotten the idea. Simply, I would've really liked more variety on this recording.

3 out of 5 stars Playful music which cheers you up!.......1999-06-14

Good points:The instrumental part is amazing, especially"Icek w Kolomej". Bad points:The voices are awful.
