The Classic Years

Editorial Reviews

As the golden-haired, frog-throated chanteuse of the Velvet Underground, the German born Nico cast a decadent spell. Her cool, detached performances, in direct opposition with the feel-good hippie vibe of the 1960s, influenced the punk scene of the 1970s. This collection serves as an excellent sampler of Nico's work, beginning with her first single for Rolling Stones' manager Andrew Loog Oldham's then-new Immediate label (a 1965 cover of Gordon Lightfoot's "I'm Not Sayin'") and spanning her Velvet Underground contributions and her stunning first four solo albums. Her ethereal cover of the Doors' "The End" matched with material by producer John Cale, Lou Reed, and Jackson Browne, as well as her own doomy compositions, illuminate her unusual sense of style. The silent hero here, however, is Cale, who served as the perfect collaborator, elevating Nico's worldview with his often gorgeous, always sympathetic musical backing. --Rob O'Connor

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars More than '60 Years of Musical Magic,' and no pseudo-versions, either!.......2007-07-25

This is a box set made up of all five volumes released for the 'Classic Disney' series, which started with Volume One in 1995 and concluded with Volume 5 in 1998 or thereabouts. Although the title says '60 Years of Musical Magic,' it's actually more like 68 years: according to the CD booklet for Volume One, 'Minnie's Yoo-hoo' (last track on Volume One) was recorded and published in like 1930. Meanwhile, one of the more recent tracks is 'I'll Make a Man Out of You,' from 'Mulan' in 1998. So instead of just 60 years, we get almost 70 years of music from these discs.

These CDs don't just include the 'in-movie versions' of the songs we all know and love from the movies in which they appeared, but we also get songs from TV shows like 'Davy Crockett' and 'The [OLD] Mickey Mouse Club.' Not to mention selections from theme parks or specified events, such as the 'Main Street Electrical Parade' Medley (Volume 2) made exclusively for Disneyland in 1979, and 'It's a Small World' for the 1963 New York World's Fair (the 1964 version doesn't appear on this set, but it does on 'Disney's Greatest Volume 2').

Also, as a certain customer mentioned about 'Disney's Princess Collection' (Volume 1), you won't find songs from sequels to the original Disney movies on here. And, in response to that kid who compared the in-movie version on 'Circle of Life' from 1994's 'The Lion King' to Elton John's version from the same soundtrack and judged the latter superior to the former, don't even talk to me about 'poppy' or 'meant for radio play' versions of these songs anywhere on the set: THERE AREN'T ANY!!!!

Anyway, I've said enough. If you're a die-hard Disney fan, or want something with which to entertain either yourself, your children (if you have any), or your whole family, buy this. The individual volumes are out of print, so you probably want to save up for this one if buying it. End of discussion.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ITEM.......2007-06-27

I ORDERED THIS ITEM FOR MY SON WHO LOVES DISNEY MUSIC. IT CAME IN GREAT CONDITION AND QUICKLY. LISTENING TO THE CD,S BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF MY YOUNGER DAYS.

3 out of 5 stars Slow shipping & Minor Damage.......2007-05-14

My kids (2 & 3 yrs.) like the music that they have heard before. There are many songs included that are less popular. If your kids are like mine, you will be hitting the "next" button frequently. I ended up burning a cd of the songs that they liked. This worked out well.

The Shipping was fairly slow. It took about two weeks (10 business days) to arrive through standard mail. This probably wouldn't have been so bad, but most of the other orders that I have placed through Amazon have arrived in 5 business days or less.

The product itself seemed to be damaged during manufacture. All of the CDs were lose in the cases. It appears that they didn't seat properly, and during the seating process the tines in the center of the case that hold the CDs in place were broken. None of the discs were damaged or scratched.

5 out of 5 stars Grrrrrreat!.......2007-05-03

This is the best product for every Disney junkie, i LOVE it! It has just about every classic song ever made. I love it, and the price is VERY reasonable for 125 songs... it's a MUCH better deal than buying the other disney classic cd's individualy...so BUY IT!! like tigger says: ITS "GRRRRREEEAAAT!!!"

5 out of 5 stars This CD is Awesome.......2007-04-12

It has all the good disney songs sung like in the movies with the original singers. My daughter loves it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!!!!.......2006-07-22

I have all 5 CD's and it is an awesome collection! All of my favorite songs are on the 5 CD's and every Disney fan like I am should have this collection!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed with these CD series..........2005-10-02

There isn't one single song from the 1977 classic "The Rescuers" included in this collection, I don't see why Disney chose not to include any of those songs which are all gorgeous, when they did include unmemorable and weak songs instead, I've seen these CD's with songs that aren't half as good as "Tomorrow is Another Day," "The Journey," "Someone's Waiting for You" or "Rescue Aid Society."

Very disappointing, The Rescuers is a fine Disney classic and it should be included with all of the others.

5 out of 5 stars Great Idea and a Wonderful CD.......2002-02-01

The idea of issuing musical selections from Disney films, features and other areas of their world of entertainment is really quite pleasing. If you love the world that Walt Disney created and has continued on to this day, this CD gives you little musical vignettes across that span of time that are very nostalgic and uplifting. I really love Track 13: THE MONKEY'S UNCLE sung by Annette Funicello and The Beach Boys. Track 4: "Under the Sea" from THE LITTLE MERMAID is just wonderful. This is a great CD.

5 out of 5 stars This is an awesome album!.......2001-12-20

This album is great because it has many songs that everyone in the family can agree upon. Like most teens, my parents aren't too thrilled with what i usually listen to, but with Classic Disney we all sing along while i remember movies from when I was younger, like The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast, and my parents remember some of their old favorites, like The Parent Trap and originally seeing Peter Pan. This is a must-have for anyone who loves Disney movies and wants to share the songs with their kids or little brothers and sisters.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Irresistable.......2001-11-24

I think that Disney music captures our emotions and what a better way to get them then through a cullmination of the best Disney songs! Volume 1 contains all the newest hits as well as the greatest classics. I urge anyone to buy this cd...it will only open your heart and bring you back to your childhood!

Amazon.com essential recording

Fairport Convention in its early years was to British folk-rock what the Byrds were to the genre's American bookend. Boasting in their heyday a frontline of Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson, and Iain Matthews, the group's impact has, if anything, grown in the years since the classic lineup split up. Fairport's stature is largely attributable to the ongoing popularity of Brit-folk touchstones Liege and Lief and Unhalfbricking, as well as Thompson's continued high-caliber solo work. Meet on the Ledge offers 32 tracks on two CDs, ranging from the band's somewhat awkward pre-Denny 1967 recordings and on into the mid-'70s, nearly a half-decade after Thompson had moved on. Instructive liner notes and a smattering of rare and previously unreleased tracks make this anthology an exceptional starting point for those who haven't immersed themselves in Fairport Convention and the movement they cultivated. --Steven Stolder

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fans can never be objective..........2006-04-26

From the OBJECTIVE reviewer...before Richard Thompson's over rated solo years there was his underrated Fairport Convention Years. This is a great over view and the best FC collection.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Fairport Convention!.......2004-08-15

"Meet on the Ledge" covers Fairport Convention's recording career from their first Polydor album from 1967 till "Rising from the Moon" from 1975; the last one to feature Sandy Denny.

On their first 3-4 albums the Fairports were a more pop/rock oriented band than many people may realise. It wasn't until Dave Swarbrick's entry in 1969 that they grew into the traditional-folk/rock group that has become their trademark since.

Their first album, with Judy Dyble, is only represented by Joni Mitchell's "Chelsea Morning". It's a fine song from an album that had its fine moments, but lacked clear direction.

Their next two albums, on the other hand is very well reprented here.

5 songs from "What we did in our Holidays" and close to 27 minutes from "Unhalfbricking".

These two albums show great song-writing from both Richard Thompson and Sandy Denny. Sandy Denny's "Fotheringay" and "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" are both among her finest. Thompson contributes fine songs like "Meet on the Ledge" and "Genesis Hall"

Both albums feature covers of obscure Bob Dylan songs like "I'll Keep it With Mine" and "Percy's Song". I particularly like the latter, which was one of the songs that really turned me on to the band.

Their inspiration from traditional British music shows on both albums; especially on their 11 minute version of "A Sailor's Life", which features guest appearance of Dave Swarbrick ( on violin ) , who was soon to be a permanent member.

Their next album, the folk-rock classic "Liege and Lief", was Fairport Convention in a new line-up. Ian Matthews and Martin Lamble had been replaced by Dave Mattacks and Dave Swarbrick, both key members in Fairport history.

The album features traditional songs and great new originals like "Farewell Farewell" ( Thompson ), "Crazy Man Michael" ( Thompson/Swarbrick ) and "Come All Ye" (Denny/Hutchings ) . Their songwriting was very much in a traditional folk-style; so the album is very consistent and an all-time classic of folk-rock. It is very well represented with five tracks out of eight. One of my favourites from the album "The Deserter" is oddly enough not featured, though.

After "Liege and Lief" Sandy Denny and Ashley Hutchings were next to leave. Sandy was not replaced and Dave Pegg ( another key person in their history ) took over the bass, and added brilliant mandolin-picking to their style.

The new line-up recorded a great single "Now Be Thankful" by Thompson and Swarbrick, which is obviously included here.

Their 1970 album "Full House" is another milestone in folk-rock. The vocals of Swarbrick, Thompson and to a lesser extent Simon Nicol are so great that the voice of Sandy Denny is not missed here. The album is represented by Thompson's and Swarbrick's "Walk Awhile" and the live-favourite "Sloth". Two more songs from that period is included here. Their early 10 minute version of "Bonny Bunch of Roses" and the "Full House" outtake "Poor Will and the Jolly Hangman"; another Swarbrick/Thompson compostion which was pulled from the album in the last moment, which was really a big shame - a great song which is now included in its right place on the CD reissue of that album.

Strangely enough their next album "Angel Delight" is only represented by Swarbrick and Thompson's "Journeyman's Grace". Thompson had left the band by then and is not credited on the album except as a co-writer on "Journeyman's Grace" and "Sickness and Diseases".

The album may not be quite as consistent as "Full House", but still a very good album, and I think songs like "Banks of the Sweetprimroses" and "Angel Delight" had deserved a place on this compilation.

Their next album "John Babbacombe Lee" (1971) was a concept album, telling the story of the hanging of John Lee which never succeeded. Though it's a great album, and probably very much a Dave Swarbrick project, it is only represented by one track. This probably makes good sense, as the songs obviously work best as a whole.

Their next album "Rosie" was slightly more pop/mainstream oriented. Simon Nicol had left ( the last original member ) and had been replaced by Jerry Donahue and Trevor Lucas.

From the album we have Dave Swarbrick's beatiful "Rosie", which must be one his greatest songs. Very moving to hear Sandy Denny's and Linda Thompson's voices on the chorus. Richard Thompson is also playing on the track. The deep voice of Trevor Luces can ve heard on the other "Rosie" track "The Plainsman", which is also a fine song.

This line-up recorded one more album "Nine". Of the three track included from that album Dave Pegg's "Polly on the Shore" is by far my favourite; great vocals from Trevor Lucas. Dave Swarbrick's "To Althea From Prison" been a great addition from that album. The exquisite guitarplaying of Jerry Donahue is shining on many of the "Nine"-tracks.

The next album, and the last one to be represented here, is "Rising for the Moon" for which Sandy Denny had rejoined the band. After this album the band made a total change of direction ( into acoustic traditional folk ) with the commercially ( and artistically? ) flop of "Gottle o Geer", which was also to be their final original album for Island Records.

"Rising for the Moon" marks a fine end to a great era. With great songs from Sandy Denny ( the title track, "Stranger to Himself", "What is True", "After Halloween" and "One More Time" and Dave Swarbrick's "White Dress" and "Nighttime Girl". Sandy Denny is clearly the dominating personality here. The four songs selected for this compilation represent the album perfectly.

This compilation is highly recommendable; and if you want more of the same Island Records have reissued most of the Fairport Convention albums with great bonus-tracks.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome anthology!!!.......2004-04-07

Of all the bands I have heard from Britain, especially around the 60s and 70s era this is one of my favorite bands. I was first drawn to them by Sandy Denny's beautiful voice which I first heard from Led Zeppelins song "Battle of Evermore" on "Stairway to Heaven." The songs I like are Fotheringay, Mr. Lacey, Book Song, Meet on the Ledge, Genesis Hall, Come All Ye, Matty Groves, and Tam Lin. On Disc 2 there are some some songs on there that I do like, but I don't play it as much as Disc 1. All in all this is still a great anthology.

5 out of 5 stars Simply one of the best compilations ever!.......2002-02-05

From the most under-rated bands of all time....a great compilation of their music. Contrary to some of the other reviews in this section, Disc #2 is phenominal! They became a different group with each new release and I loved all of them. Especially: 'Full House', 'Angel Delight' and 'Nine'. Great stuff with Trevor Lucas and Jerry Donahue in the mid-seventies. Long live Swarb, Peggy, DM, and Simon for those latter years and beyond!

Heck, I'm listening to 'Gottle o' Geer' right now!!!

5 out of 5 stars Disc One Will Become a Favorite CD!.......2001-11-16

Disc One is a great collection.
1)Chelsea Morning(Mitchell). This song isn't my favorite and I often skip it but since it was a radio hit....from the self titled first album.
2-7)Fotheringay, Mr. Lacey, Book Song,I'll Keep it With Mine(Dylan), Tale in Hard Time, Meet on the Ledge. I love all these songs from their second and much better What We Did on Our Holiday, thoughtful and thoughtfully played sixties folk rockers.
8-11)Genesis Hall, A Sailors Life, Who Knows Where The Time Goes, Percys Song(Dylan). I'm not a big Sandy Denny ballad fan so that third one "Who knows..." not a favorite but this is a very energetic group of folk rock with emphasis on the latter, those first two are rollicking epic tales, from their classic Unhalfbricking album.
12-16)Come All Ye,Matty groves, Tam Lin, Crazy Man Michael, Farewell Farewell. These are all Celtic rockers from the album that created that genre, Liege& Lief. Those first three will blow your British Isle socks off.
I highly recommend this first disc or several of the original albums on disc. However I can't recommend disc two, because it documents the band as members started leaving and whereas that first disc is one breakthrough recording after another, the second disc just repeats with ever diminishing success what was done on those early records.
Disc One is five stars. Disc Two is two stars for though it contains an occasional highlight the disc is for the most part filled out with material that is not really up to the Fairport standard set on disc one.

5 out of 5 stars More Classic Music from Disney.......2002-02-27

This third CD of Disney music is a good mixture of the old with the new. Track 1: "Colors of the Wind" from POCAHONTAS is one of the best songs composed to date for a motion picture. Track 18: "Bella Notte" from LADY AND THE TRAMP brings back many memories as does Track 21: "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" from television show and movies. Going back even further is Track 24: "Little April Shower" from BAMBI, which is an interesting composition representing nature's beauty, fury and return to tranquility. Track 6: "Les Poissons" is a great number from THE LITTLE MERMAID that is well composed musically but also is used to advance the story of the film. This is yet another great CD in this series.

4 out of 5 stars NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS.......2001-03-18

Burton movies are great. Burton movies with Elfman's music... well, they're out of this world. Nightmare before Christmas is my favorite movie of all times, and someone who hasn't seen it, doesn't have to make those comments. It's a movie full of great feelings; plus the music is great. Someone who hasn't seen the movie wouldn't understand "Jack's Lament"... I invite Caroline to see it and THEN critize it. BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIMES.

4 out of 5 stars GRREAT!.......2000-09-21

These Disney CD's are so great. People of all ages can enjoy them. My favorite is volume 2. My 3 year old LOVES it but so does my 22 year old friend!

4 out of 5 stars Nightmare Before Christmas Rocks!.......2000-08-25

Anyone who would suggest that Jack's Lament and Nightmare Before Christmas was not good, without even seeing the movie should not be allowed to make reviews on websites. It's a great movie and Danny Elfman is a brilliant composer. Hey let's hear it for the lady who can't handle anything more complex than, "M.I.C.K.E..." you know what I mean...I get a little upset thats all...

4 out of 5 stars A great collection of songs.......2000-04-01

I loved the first two cds of this series, and I love this one as well, but I can honestly give it only four stars. I loved 'Mine, Mine, Mine" because David Ogden Stiers sings a part in it, and "Les Poissons" was great because Rene Auberjonois sings it (he played the Changling in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), and does a wonderful job. I also loved "Are We Dancing" from The Happiest Millionaire, one of my favorite Disney movies. But the one thing I disliked was the song from "Nightmare Before Christmas". That was one movie that didn't need to be made. I'll admit, I never saw it, but I don't have to to know that it wasn't something I'd enjoy. Just listening to "Jack's Lament" tells me enough. This cd didn't need that song, and that is why I can only give this one four stars.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Disney songs from yesteryear to share.........2007-07-09

We bought this CD to practice my daughter's dance recital number to the "MICKY MOUSE CLUB MARCH"...however after listening to the whole thing over and over and over we are totally in love with classics like "THe Bear Neccessities" and "Supercalifragilistic (SP?)....we love the songs from all our favorite Disney movies, and this CD showcases a lot of them! :) A total bargain for variety music that is appropriate for children and families alike.

5 out of 5 stars Fantasmically Disney!.......2003-03-28

This compillation of many of the best Disney songs such as "Ev'ry body's got a laughin' place" in Song of the South, "When you wish upon a star" in Pinocchio, "Supercalifragelisticexpialodocious" in Julie Andrew's Mary Poppins, "Mickey Mouse Club March" from the Mickey Mouse Club are just a few of the amazing songs mixed into this CD. A few weeks ago, my favourite CD of the first 4 was number three, now, it is number 2! So as you can see...they are excellent. I'd also like to point out that if you don't know some songs on the CD's...give them a chance. For example: "ON The Front Porch" is a very good song, even if I had never heard it before as well as "Ev'ry body's got a laughin' place"! Just listen to it and you'll drift away Part of another world or One Jump Ahead of Reality!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Second Compilation from Disney.......2002-02-27

The concept of issuing musical selections from Disney's movies, features and other areas of their world of entertainment continues to be quite satisfying. If you love the world that Walt Disney created and has continued on to this day, this is another CD that continues to give you little musical vignettes across that span of time that are very nostalgic and uplifting as they did with the first one. Track 1: "Be Our Guest" from BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is really well written in the grand style of the old Hollywood musicals. Track 8: "Candle on the Water" from PETE'S DRAGON is beautifully written and performed. Track 15: "It's a Small World (After All)" is now a timeless classic and a musical icon very representative of Walt Disney's vision for societies of the future. This is one of the best volumes of the set.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best.......2001-01-31

This is quite possibly the best of all of the Disney Classic Cds. Beleive me, I own each and every one. I fall asleep to them, eat to them, dace to them, sing to them. I love all of the song so much I can sing each of them without the cd or the words in the order they are on the cd. Definatly a must have and perfect for anyone who needs a little Disney in their life.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best...........2000-08-03

Disney's masterpieces have always relied on music, so the music has to be memorable and magical. This collection of various Disney tunes (including everything from "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" to "Mickey Mouse Club March") is a true gem. If you remember Disney by the early films, your music is here. If you remember the Golden Age ("The Little Mermaid" through "Aladdin"), your music is here. If your Disney is the later years ("Pocahantas" through "Tarzan"), your music is here. It's all here--even the Main Street Electrical Parade theeme! This album has something for the whole family, and is critical to any Disney music collection! Also reccomended are the other volumes in this series. (So far there have been five editions--this one is the second.) But I especially reccomend this one. ;o) Do yourself a favor and add it to your collection! If you're a Disney fan, you'll never forget this album. (SURE HIT!)

4 out of 5 stars a fine overview from Garland's years with Capitol.......2007-02-24

Judy Garland recorded for the Capitol label between 1955 and 1965. During that period she made several wonderful albums (including "Miss Show Business" in 1955, "Judy" in 1956, and "That's Entertainment" in 1959). She also recorded several unreleased singles and demos, many of which are making their CD debut with this double-disc release.

Aside from her moviemaking days with M-G-M, this was probably her most fruitful creative partnership. The producers at Capitol perfectly understood her unique talents and assigned projects to her that were in keeping with what she was interested in at the time.

Garland was a great supporter of the little-known Broadway musicals. Only Garland would record "Sweet Danger" from the notorious flop KEAN. "The Worst Kind of Man" and "The Red Balloon" both come from her super-rare album The Letter.

Garland also performs the ultimate apologist ballad, "As Long As He Needs Me", from OLIVER! The role of Nancy was one that Garland displayed interest in playing on the stage, although with her hectic schedule it never quite happened. Kurt Weill's "It Never Was You" is another gorgeous ballad which Garland nails perfectly (and was later recycled for her final movie, I Could Go On Singing).

This disc is filled with the classic Judy numbers we all love, plus a handful of tantalising unreleased tracks. A very fine album indeed.

5 out of 5 stars A great collection to have!.......2007-02-01

This cd has all the best of Garland and her amazing range in a song. I find this album to be on the same almost has carnegie hall.

5 out of 5 stars Judy's Back!!.......2007-01-12

Judy Garland, 1922 to 1969 - she is well known for her role as Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz.

This 2 CD set shows her in a new, to some, light: a mature song seller. Indeed she displays an extraordinary range of emoitions on this CD set from big belting numbers, Come Rain or Come Shine, What Now My Love?, When The Sun Comes Out to emoitonal ballads with heartache, Last Night When We Were Young, It Never Was You, with everything in-between. She tackles fun throwaway numbers such as Purple Eater and Don't Rain On My Parade, and very 60's type songs, How Long Has This Been Going On, and The Worst Kind of Man.

Each and every number sounds wonderful, as if she recorded them very recently. That ritch, wonderful voice fills each and every song as only she can. You can hear the change in her voice from the middle 50's to middle 60's. In the 50's tracks it is very full, round and powerful.
Towards the middle 60's some of that fullness is gone, but it's still Judy Garland. It's intresting to hear her on a few selections when she had thorat probelms such as the selections from Garland at The Grove - having heard about her voice not being great I was susprised to hear how wonderful it still was. Likewise her aborted Judy Takes Boradway album, the selections here show her to be still in wonderful voice, albeit husky.
The included booklet provides details on every song and what orginal album it is from. WIth a wonderful selection of songs, from classic Judy to different Judy this CD belongs in every Judy Garland fan's collection.

(On a side note The Letter is making it's CD debut THIS April)

5 out of 5 stars Classic Indeed!.......2006-08-03

Judy Garland- the Capitol Years, has become one of my favorite CDs. From obvious favorites like "Over the Rainbow", "Rock-a-Bye Your Baby", and "Swanne" to the more obscure "Sweet Danger", and the songs from "The Letter" and "Maggie May", this is a perfect Garland compilation. Perfect for long time fans of Judy and better yet, perfect for those who have never heard her sing before; you are in for a treat!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Garland!.......2005-04-28

I've always loved Judy Garland's voice best in the 50's and early 60's when she was recording both studio and live albums for "The Tower" Capitol Records. Her voice could sound powerful enough to bend the walls of Carnegie Hall yet also retain a purity to break the hearts of her lsteners. These recordings show the emotional-depth that only Judy Garland (and also Frank Sinatra) could put into a song--an intimacy that makes you feel "as if she's singing staright to you." You can hear the heartache in her voice when she sings the sad numbers yet also feel the liveliness and energy of the fast songs. There was nothing that that voice couldn't do! I highly recommend this CD. It truly represents Garland at the peak of her powers as "The World's Greatest Entertainer!"

More than practically any other African musician, King Sunny Ade has enjoyed unparalleled longevity, both at home and with Western music fans. Born into Nigerian royalty (the "King" is not merely a courtesy title), he embarked upon his chosen career path early, incorporating traditional rhythms and percussion, chilled-out vocals, sinuous bass lines, and especially the wacked-out, psychedelic guitar of Bob Ohiri. During the '60s and '70s, Ade's mature sound slowly evolved; although he was years away from an international breakthrough, his trademark stylistic markers were already in place, hastening him toward historic doings. The bandleader's high, nasal voice, wreathed in talking drums and shakers, echoed by a call-and-response choir, reflected Yoruba folkways along with hints of Muslim and Christian religious and secular music. By now, Ade's songs had become longer and more subtle; many of his intricate, gradually unfolding sets of themes and variations were clocking in at twenty minutes-plus on record and over an hour live. As on Shanachie's excellent Best of the Classic Years (2003), these tunes, although unquestionably landmark recordings, have hardly been heard outside of the maestro's homeland. They constitute a crucial document of Ade's first flush of local fame, and if the sound quality is slightly over-resonant, it is also remarkably vivid and clear. --Christina Roden

Album Description

Seventy-eight guitar classics are put together in 100 YEARS OF JAZZ GUITAR, a remarkable 4-CD anthology that yields the absolutely definitive jazz guitar collection ever assembled. The set spans the years 1906 to 2001, from the ragtime banjo of Vess Ossman (originally recorded on an Edison cylinder) to the diaphonous chords of Bill Frisell. In between, virtually every major figure of the jazz guitar weighs in, from Eddie Lang, Django Reinhardt, and Charlie Christian to Les Paul, Tal Farlow, and Wes Montgomery, and right up to Jim Hall, Grant Green, George Benson, Pat Martino, John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny, and John Scofield as well as Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana, and the great Jimi Hendrix.

In addition, the box also contains a book filled with photographs of each of the principles heard herein, an overview essay by guitar scholar Charles Alexander, old guitar ads, photos of classic guitar models and amps, solo transcriptions and technical analysis, testimonials from guitar legends, and precise discographical data. Clearly, 100 YEARS OF JAZZ GUITAR is the set to get if one is even remotely interested in the history and development of guitar over the course of the past century.

4 out of 5 stars Progressions: 100 Years Of Jazz Guitar.......2007-02-11

What a shame one never gets to hear Oscar Almen do what he does better
than just about any other Guitarist,Or hear enough Django,Charlie Christen
,Teddy Bunn,To really understand why they are more than just fine Guitarist....they are "Jazz Greats"

Thats because this Collection is more Intrested in getting
non jazz fans to buy this set.
There's a few odd things about this very good box set.The fact
that the cover of the Booklet(which is very nice)is a picture of a flattop
guitar, and there's plenty of Guitars and Guitarist that should be in a rock or pop collection

I guess when they were trying to update the fine two record set
50 years of jazz Guitar,They stuck with the one track pre artist.
This makes for a lot of space for many guitarists,Which is the main
problem with this set.Instead of giving you 2 or 3 cuts from real
jazz greats(not just fine Guitar Players)they fill the four
cds with Pop and Rock recordings that have no place in a jazz Guitar
collection.
I love Santana ,but he's not Jazz,Part of something being jazz in
improvisation, something that Santana doen't do much of .Which
doesn't make "Europa" any less great,.Also just because you
Improvise doesn't mean that a artist is a jazz also.Theres plenty
of Guitarists that have nothing to do with jazz on this set. Some
are jazz players who play pop(Earl Klugh),Others like Hendrix
or Jeff Beck aren't Jazz at all.The last pages
of the booklet are pictures of Strats and Les Pauls and even
a Classical guitar gets a double page spread how silly is That!

4 out of 5 stars This collection could have been better.......2006-07-26

After listening to this 4 cd set several times I've come to the conclusion that it could have been better condensed into 2 spectacular jazz cd's. First of all, cd 1 starts off with what sounds like banjo. Who's bright idea what it to include it on 100 years of jazz guitar? There are also songs that are dominated by saxophone and/or vocals with guitar as a background instrument.
If I wanted to hear vocals and sax I would have purchased cd's with vocals and/or Coltrane or Sonny Rollins, repectively.
There are only a few gems on cd 1 most notably Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian.
Cd 2 is probably the best with cd 3 close behind. However, can somebody tell me why Jimi Hendrix doing "Manic Depression" is on this cd? If you know the answer then perhaps you may also know why in the world Carlos Santana is on this collection as well.
And Derek Bailey's 1997, "Should Be Reversed" is just garbage!!! THIS IS NOT JAZZ!!! Who's bright idea was it to put this track on the compilation? I keep thinking, another Django tune, another Wes Montgomery, Pass, Ellis, Burrell tune would have been better suited to make this a better compilation.
All that 1970's distorted psuedo-jazz fusion racket by the likes of John McLaughlin and others dominate cd 4. Cd 4 contains all the "really want to play rock, but call themselves jazz guitarists."
There are some great guitarists and tasty licks on this cd package, but there is also NON jazz on this too. Be advised.

5 out of 5 stars Historical Integrity!.......2006-06-06

Everyone will find something of their own here, be it pre-Charlie Christian or late period Miles. My own contribution (as a reviewer) is to commend the compilers for a keen sense of history. Instead of simply falling into the listmania cliche of "the 100 best X" they have chosen players according to a wide variety of criteria. Two that JUMP out here are: (1) how INFLUENTIAL a guitarist has been regardless of record sales or fame; (2) how HISTORICALLY or MUSICALLY significant a given recording has been. In the first category I note the recognition of Lenny Breau and Sonny Sharrock who are far from household naems. In the second category I note the inclusion of tracks that point to landmarks in the evolution of music and jazz guitar : Birds of Fire, June 15 from Duster (Burton/Coryell), Bright Size Life. This box set will delight you if you are a well-seasoned jazz enthusiast or coming to the genre for the first time. A fantastic value!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Essential guitar history.......2006-05-17

A monumental work, this four-CD box set celebrates the evolution of jazz from the perspective of our favorite instrument. Featuring representative cuts from 75 pivotal players, 100 Years of Jazz Guitar offers selections from the dawn of recorded music (originally captured on Edison cylinders) extending to the present day. The adventure begins with a harp-guitarist strumming in 1906 and stretches to Bill Frisell's "Ron Carter," released in 2001. Relatively unsung giants, such as Lonnie Johnson, Roy Smeck, and Eddie Condon rub shoulders with the likes of Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, Tal Farlow, Wes Montgomery, and Pat Metheny. The scope is enormous -- shifting from Sol Hoopii's bouncy lap slide to Marc Ribot's skronky sonics is a mind-bender -- but that's what makes this collection so valuable. We hear the entire spectrum of jazz guitar, from swing to bebop to funk to avant-garde. There's plenty to read, as well: John Scofield penned the collection's intro (he also appears musically), there's a bio for every player, and 25 of the included guitarists reveal who they find inspiring and why. "Essential" is an overused word, but in this case, it's wonderfully appropriate.

5 out of 5 stars 100 Years.......2006-03-11

Sometimes you just love something but have no idea about where it came from - its history. This set has filled in a lot of blanks for me and has had me listening to stuff by some great guitarists that I wouldn't ordinarily tune in to. And it's all good.

5 out of 5 stars A+ for the Basie Cats! and AMAZINGLY, the Columbia guys got it right........2006-05-20

I don't have to tell anyone how great these tracks are. How does one guy get all 16 of the greatest swing musicians in the world into one band? This set has some Great surprises: Live sides, and rare alternates, like "It's The Same Old South", (a different take than the version on the vinyl "Superchief")

I have several of these on the ARC/Columbia family of labels (Vocallion, Brunswick, Okey, etc.) both 78s and Lps. and have been trying and failing to replace them with decent CD copies. COLUMBIA FINNALLY GOT IT RIGHT!. This set is a pleasure, and for once, it sounds great! You will NEVER be dissapointed with this purchace.

Now if Columbia would refund everybody's money for the unlistenable versions of these tunes they issued on the "Essential" series, and the "This Is Jazz" series etc., we could use it to replace our copies of the Armstrong Hot Fives that they had previous butchered, or the Bix, ...it goes on .....

5 out of 5 stars A Great Overview Of These Years.......2005-06-25

A welcome addition in a lovely box with all the beauty of great sound,a 90 page book, a great disc of live material/broadcasts makes this a needed addition to any Basie lover..I also have the Columbia's Essential collections spanning 3 discs but this here is a needed bonus and is still not a substitute for those under rated discs put out earlier...Such a prolific man deserves royal treatment and does some justice to the earlier output..but obviously other reviewers will give you more detail as to songs selection and musicians I just wanted to add appreciation..

5 out of 5 stars Seeking Intro to Swing? Start Here.......2005-02-26

This is a truly great package which you will find yourself listening to again and again. As others mentioned, the four discs here cover several of Basie's bands, so what you get is not simply 90 songs from a single band, which would get quite boring no matter how great any individual band was, but rather choice cuts from different bands of different size and composition over a twenty year period. The result is four discs each with their own distinct sound, each providing a different snapshot of the evolution of swing under Basie.

While historians might object, the arrangement of the songs is great too from the standpoint of a pure listening experience, with the first two discs being Basie's smaller groups, and the latter two being the larger Count Basie Orchestra. While the Orchestra is the most famous of these bands, and is outstanding in its own right, the best material here is from the small groups. The sound is less polished than it would become years later, but there's a raw energy to the Basie Octet that can't be matched.

The sound throughout the package is amazing. Full bass, minimal hiss, and not tinny. If only all music from this era could be remastered so well.

This is fun music, not the over-intellectualized jazz that sends people from the room. Well worth the investment if you want an overview of swing at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar release.......2004-09-27

This is the best these sides have sounded ever, period. It is really a treat to hear the early Basie band with Lester Young in all its glory. The sound restoration on some of these tracks is just unbelievable, I had to check the linear notes to make sure these were the 1940 recordigs, because they sounded so different to the muddy/scratchy sound I grew used to. The linear notes alone are worth the price of this box set. And one full disc of most unreleased live tracks, many with Lester Young and Billie Holiday? You do the math. Many people, i am not included, are waiting for the full Columbia sessions remastered, but for me, this is what I have been waiting many years. The track secuence is annoying, I still cant understand why not doing it chronological, but its just a minor flaw.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of classic jazz and swing.......2004-09-14

This is a swell 4-CD box set that covers all of Basie's studio work for the Columbia label, from 1936-51, working in a variety of configurations, from small combos to the full-on Basie Orchestra, including several songs with Basie backing up Billie Holiday, and plenty of other vocal tunes featuring Basie regulars Helen Humes and Jimmy Rushing. This collection also marks the first time Columbia has officially delved into the wealth of live transcription performances and radio broadcasts featuring the Basie band... This material was previously the sole province of various European collector labels; Sony shows it's able to do this material up right, with meticulous scholarship and great sound quality. Doubtless, many of the sniffier jazz scholars will find some reason or another to pooh-pooh this collection, but for us regular folks, it's mighty tasty. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Juju Juju.......2005-11-28

This is dance music of the transcendent variety, with swaying rhythms and the lilting, heavily-channeled guitars the Nigerian style known as juju became famous for. These are early recordings, taken mostly from the late 1960s and early 1970s, long before he landed a record contract in the West and briefly made inroads via the emerging "worldbeat" movement of the 1980s. Largely sung in Yoruba, with two tracks pushing past 17 minutes in length, and instrumental more often than not, it's easy to see how Ade was a harder sell than Bob Marley. But don't let any small cultural differences keep you away from the delightful artistry of King Sunny. The music both lifts your spirits and moves your feet.

4 out of 5 stars raw Juju.......2003-08-22

If you like the groove of Juju but are put off by the over-production of Ade's 1980s albums that brought him renown in the states, or even if you're just a fan of Juju music in general this is a good collection. Apparently culled from his recordings between 1967-74, the tracks here have a funkier sound, with some of the production sounding like a distant cousin of dub reggae or acid rock.

The first five tracks (out of 10) comprise an 18 minute medley from one album, a choice I find slightly strange considering the producers supposedly had 12 albums of material to choose from. In addition, track 6 is the complete 18 minute version of Synchro System, later rerecorded and made into something of a hit in the US. Still, the medley really burns, and seems worth including in its entirety. The other four tracks are solid as well, and in all, the CD provides more than 70 minutes of the best Juju ever recorded.
