5 out of 5 stars The songs that put Sophie Ellis Bextor on the map.......2007-05-12

If you like songs with intellient lyrics and a melody then look no further. This album is like a breath of fresh air to our jaded ears.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2004-02-14

Good cd, more consistent than the first, and an overall better listen, but lacking some of the stronger more upbeat qualities the hit singles on Read my Lips contained. Still worth the money!

4 out of 5 stars sophie is a songwriter.......2004-01-08

To start with I am bummed out that I have the 10 track version of this recording without the extra 3 (!)tracks contained on the UK version, this leaves me slightly miffed and concerned that australian fans are not worthy of an extra 3 tracks --admit i havent deliberatly searched for the hidden track and it sounds like it might best remain hidden anyway.

ok then down to business>>either you have bought the first album and you want to know if the second one can match it>>the answer appears to be...yes ..maybe, I was a huge fan of the first album and this one has not yet surpassed it and is currently sitting a notch or 2 below it>>which is not to say it does not have the potential to match it, it does, surpass it? maybe not.

ok maybe you dont have the 1st sophie album and you have the age old dilema>>which one do i buy?? well in my opinion you buy the first one (see above) then buy the 'watch my lips' DVD and live in ecstacy for week while you watch that and then go out and buy some stylish clothes that make you feel good and buy the second CD of Sophies, come home and feel like the world is a great place afterall.

Special mention must be made of Sophies songwriting which seems to have matured from the first album. Sophie has something to say and can use words and music effectively like the great songwriters, i dont think we have seen or heard the best from Sophie yet. I can see a stripped back recording with acoustics and reliance on words , phrasing and delivery that becomes her masterpeice. If i have a criticism of the current album is that there seems to be too much happening in some of the tracks , particularly the ballads which , due to the strength of the songwriting would have been more powerful with less. I am sure Sophie would agree that less is sometimes...more.

So go on funksters, hail the birth of a great female songwriter from britian and realize that british art is not dead.
(a aussie still recovering from the world cup defeat).

5 out of 5 stars A+++++.......2003-12-24

This CD contains many different types of moods and styles. From industrial to electronica, brit-pop, and a really laid back (but still moving) guitar song like "party in my head" which for lack of a better description is Sheryl Crow-ish. "Love it is Love" is a combination samba/disco and is sure to get you dancing. The last song "Hello Hello" really suprised me. Its slow moving and has some very beautiful moments if you learn to accept the soft sounds in combination with Sophie's voice. We can't be dancing all night long, you know. Again, for lack of a better description, think K.D. Lang, but it is still Sophie's own style.
If you really enjoy Sophie Ellis Bextor, you must buy this CD. I listened to the samples at www.sophieellisbextor.net and still wasn't really sold, but since I really liked the artist I bought it anyways to give it a shot. Now its my favorite CD....along with Emma Bunton's "Maybe." Also a must have. Check out my review when I receive it next week.

3 out of 5 stars Shoot To Your Ears........2003-12-05

I must admit, I was not all that crazy about Ms. Ellis-Bextor's first album. Read My Lips had only a handfull of songs I liked. This album I feel is stronger. Making Music is a whale of a track, my favorive on the album, along with I Am Not Good At Not Getting What I Want, which is wonderful with it's 1950's guitar work. Hello Hello is quite beautiful, and Mixed-Up World is infectious too. The album as a whole is more consistently listenable, but it's not perfect. Some of the tracks don't seem as well thought out as others. My biggest gripe is that some of the lyrics are very bad. Party In My Head sounds like random phrases just pulled from a thesaraus.
WARNING: There is a second edition of this album now available with only 10 tracks . DO NOT BUY THAT EDITION!!! It is the inferior version! Making Music and I Won't Dance With You are gone as is the bonus hidden track, a cover of The Olivia Newton-John classic Physical. While that bonus track was clearly not a good idea, Making Music alone is worth the extra money. Be sure you buy the proper version with the artist name and album title in WHITE lettering.

5 out of 5 stars Ellis-Bextor Strikes Gold Here.......2006-09-01

I just recently purchased this along with her 2001 debut "Read My Lips". Her debut was a slick, if slightly tame in spots, euro-disco trip. The eccentricity was there, but only peppered through her debut, here Sophie played up the eclecticism.

This is probably one of the best pop records I've heard in sometime. It is a clean & strong record, no filler, just great songs. Clocking in at almost 40 minutes, "Shoot From the Hip" is a mixed bag of pop all grounded in her familiar sensual euro-disco sound, but isn't fixed there.

"Mixed Up World" opens up in a manic pop whirl, recalling the great styles of late 1980's electric dance music & early 1990's house respectively. It reminds me of vintage Cathy Dennis in some cases. Lyrically, this is one of the strongest songs, one that deals with perserverance & determination of the human spirit. Other highlights include the hopelessly romantic thump of "I Won't Change You", the rock inflected "You Get Yours", & robo-funk of "Another Day" come to mind.

There are two songs I will focus on in particular: the one-two ballad closers "I Am Not Good At Not Getting What I Want" & "Hello, Hello". Both find Ellis-Bextor utilizing her beautiful accented voice to it's emotive fullest, without sacrificing her icy demeanor. From an arrangement point of view "I Am Not..." recalls classic torch, & "Hello, Hello" sits pretty in an alternative setting that would do Tori Amos justice.

Ellis-Bextor is clearly someone who is slightly underrated. Not only does she write her own material, she possesses a very alluring stylist voice, & manages to surround herself with production talent who can bring out the best in her, without sacrificing her personae in the process.

I highly hope that Ellis-Bextor records a follow-up worthy to this masterpiece. I recommend this to anyone who likes good music, take a chance, I'm glad I did! Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Sophie Is GREAT!.......2006-02-12

I was turned on to Sophie from fellow Corrs fans. I'm in Houston Texas, and believe me, there aren't many others around here who would possibly know who she is, or how great her music is! I love all of Read My Lips, and have even purchased "Watch My Lips". I had to have the video to go with so many songs I love. I also bought "Shoot From The Hip", but didn't get into that until recently. I am starting to love that album just as much as her first. I really get into "I Won't Change You" and "You Get Yours". Her voice! I just LOVE Sophie's voice!!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!!!.......2006-01-23

I bought this album just a few days ago and i dont know what took me so long to get into S.E.B. I loved "murder" but didnt buy the album. I logged onto her website and watched the video for "mixed up world" and was hooked. That has to be one of, if not the best songs of the new decade. The entire album is awesome. Pure disco/pop the entire way through. I have heard this album didnt do well in England which is very surprising. I am also surprised that she does not have a record deal in the States. I think she would go over huge here. She is extremely talented and writes all of her own songs. Her music style reminds me quite a bit of kylie minogue as it is pure pop all the way through. She is coming out with a new album soon and i cant wait for it. Good going Sophie!!!! You have a new fan in the States.

4 out of 5 stars Good product.......2005-09-02

The CD came as promised-brand new and factory sealed. Works perfectly. Smooth transaction.

4 out of 5 stars Loads of fun..........2005-08-15

...and supremely catchy! Her voice sounds cool and calm, but it's like the perfect foil to the pop. Music you can dance to and blare out of the speakers if you feel like a little lift.

He has taken guitar to a new level and he has advanced the work of many great guitarists that have gone before him. Lee's synthesizer work is new, and creates a higher standard which accomplished guitarists will want to reach. Lee writes, plays, and sings music that is melodic, creative, innovative, and truly a pleasure to experience. The Lee Nysted Experience should be experienced. All songs BMI. 4 out of 5 stars Muzikman Reviews Lee Nysted's "SHOOT FROM THE HIP".......2006-02-24

Artist: Lee Nysted
Title: Shoot From The Hip
Genre: Rock-Jazz Rock Fusion
Label: Nysted Music
Website: http://www.leenysted.com

Lee Nysted takes music and words, does it all his way, and calls his new album Shoot From The Hip. That expression refers to a person that tells it like it is and Nysted does that on all 12 tracks. Having traversed his own spiritual path over the years, awakening on the other side a new man, he speaks from his heart and lets his guitar do a lot of the talking with a combination of potent rock and jazz-rock fusion.

The opening track "The Semantical Consort" is a real rocker, an obvious choice for an album opener and the title track is another earth shaker, it features some nice guitar licks that puts Nysted in a good light as a real craftsman with the six-string. "Fire InThe Hole" is a nice jazz-rock fusion track. The combination of the two genres that play off each other is like the yin and yang of music at work. "All God's Children" is a great message with some of the best guitar work on the album.

The reason I can appreciate this album so much is the two-fold purpose it serves. The music lets you cut loose emotionally and the words get to the heart of the matter with a beeline right to your soul. So not only did the music touch me, it was Nysted's heartfelt message, and one I could understand perfectly. I know from whence he came. In the track "Windows" he says "I know hope, and I know you," he is talking about the spirit in the sky, the higher power, God, whatever you choose to call it, a power greater than mankind, whatever works for you. "I Surrender" is the most prolific song and it's a statement from a man that changed his life forever by making one decision, giving up the substances that took precedence over everything and turning it over to someone or something more capable of handling it. This may be too heavy for some of you that cannot relate but I had to express all of this because that is what this music revolves around. It is easy enough to apply any of it to your own life even though you may have walked a different path than Lee Nysted.

If you look at the cover you see two very colorful birds in flight, which Nysted refers to in the music, the message is very clear, free your soul and you can fly. It is apparent the artist let his hair down on this impressive release. The sound and production are excellent and so is the musicianship. Whether or not you can relate to the lyrics, although it is a bonus if you can, the music will set you free.

/Progressive Guitar, Life Songs...
I would classify this album as progressive rock revival, with an
emphasis on searing guitar work. Nysted's axe work is simply great
(think JH, EC, etc.). The synthesizer blends and weaves through the
music, but never threatens to overwhelm it. Yet the songs/lyrics
themselves are mature, focusing on the greater themes of our lives:
struggles, relationships, and faith. Nysted's voice is remininscent of a
Harvest Moon Neil Young, with that straight-forward from gut-and-heart
lament. It is honest, yet never preachy, reminding one of Glass Harp and
Phil Keaggy on the one hand, Randy California and Spirit on the other.
IMHO, those who remember the artists cited above will enjoy Nysted's
debut, as well those looking for great rock carrying deeper reflections
on life.// /

5 out of 5 stars "Masterpiece".......2005-12-27

"Masterpiece" by Musicritical
Pros: Very technical and tasteful / melodic. Soulful and heartfelt. Classic rock, yet progressive for young and older audiences. Lightning fast; real four finger work. Cons: Too many songs

This is a must listen, ladies and gentlemen! It could have been released in the 80's 90's or 10 years from now. There is a lot of talent here. It has been ages since I could laugh, cry, dance, and relax all in the scope of one hour of pure listening enjoyment. Lee plays like Hendrix but writes lyrics that speak to the child in us. He runs around the guitar like Al Dimeola, yet there are voices! Yes vocals! A little soupy sweet sometimes, but Chic would be proud. Lee gives credit to a handful of players, Al included. This band is going places if they want to! They are all studio guys so we may not get a chance to see them. I will buy a ticket if there is a venue! ...

5 out of 5 stars Best new artist, guitarist, songwriter, singer on the market........2005-11-16

Lee Nysted really knows how to work his way around a guitar. He plays like lightening on his rock tunes. His talent doesn't end there as his music is totally versatile ranging from rock and roll to melodic ballads to sexy dance music. Vocals, lyrics and technical sound are dynamite. Lee and all the musicians on the CD are proven, serious artists. This CD has it all.

5 out of 5 stars A work of pure excellence!.......2005-11-13

Very few of us will ever fulfill a lifelong dream. Lee has done this with the creation of this album and has produced a work of pure excellence. His 43 years of playing and mastering the guitar is brillantly culminated in this beautiful collection of old and new songs. Lee brings his life's experiences and the lessons learned from them ,along with a sense of hope and joy, to us all. It is very rare to find an artist with such outstanding technical talent, heart and depth of soul. His generosity of spirit shines through, with absolute perfection ,in his songwriting. He is, one of the greats. It's about time we get to enjoy him!
