Moving on from the retro-chic, turbo-geek look and sound of the first disc, Rentals frontman Matt Sharp grows out his hair, puts on a polka-dot shirt, and decides to rock. Seven More Minutes starts out with a bouncy ode to the power of positive drinking and the hedonistic, upbeat mood from then on is almost irrepressible. Even songs with titles such as "Say Goodbye Forever" sound more cheerful than depressed. The Rentals also have a great supporting cast this time around, including Tim Wheeler from Ash and Damon Albarn from Blur. Petra Haden is back and her vocals are mixed to a creamy perfection; on the absolutely gorgeous "My Head Is in the Sun," Maya Rudolph whispers a comforting chorus. The party atmosphere fades on the album's ennui-soaked closer, "Jumping Around," which leaves you with the downside of a debauched lifestyle. Still, it's not enough to sink the overall buoyant, jubilant mood of the disc. Seven More Minutes is 57 minutes and 42 seconds more of the drug you've been looking for. --Nick Berry

5 out of 5 stars Never old always fresh.......2007-06-24

I have had this album since the day that it came out and can honestly say that it is still a part of my "commute rotation". Anytime that I put this album in I am still impressed by how refreshing and unique that it is, and yet very easily accessible.
It is interesting to acknowledge this band in the midst of the electro-pop wave that has been going on for the last several years, because one could easily point to this band being a pioneer towards that effort/sound.
I highly recommend this album and its predecessor "Return of the Rentals", altough the two albums are very dissimilar in their approach and sound.
This album just never gets old.

5 out of 5 stars The people who hate this are dumb.......2004-04-10

For those of you who keep comparing this to the first rentals cd, stop....you are dumb. This is a totally different album(which is better by the way. Much like weezer's pinkerton, it was under-rated when it came out and still is.

5 out of 5 stars underappreciated, but time will tell.......2004-01-01

i bought this record right when it came out, have listened to it 1000s of times, seen different reactions from folks, but the one thing people always seem to miss is how sad a record it is. it's a deeply painful diary about the girl who likes him just fine, doesn't want more than that, doesn't care if he's gone, might get someone else...all set against the backdrop of his newfound anonymity in a foreign country, a language he doesn't speak, a freewheeling lifestyle that barely conceals the heavy thoughts (and pills) clouding his mind.
people who don't spend time with the complete story of this record (and it is a story) are missing a lot of excellent art. this record came out at the same time as the other classic "diary" records in '99, "electro-shock blues" by eels and "the proximity effect" by nada surf, which didn't actually come out at the time, though it was semi-released in promo copies and i was lucky enough to get one. these three records are highly confessional, excellently played, finely plotted, and will ALL eventually be realized as the classics they are. it reminds me of the Kinks, whose late-60s, early-70s records are only now receiving the recognition they deserve beyond their hardcore fans and fellow musicians. this record is the same. buy it, there's more going on than there seems.

3 out of 5 stars ouch.......2003-12-17

when matt sharp quit weezer, everyone was a bit upset, but the first rentals album rocked, weezer got a new bass player and everything was great. but this album isn't matt sharp quality, not comparing it to the other albums he's done, but looking at this album purely from a musical stand point, its not that great. and knowing what matt can do and then seeing him not do it is worse. this is an ok album, but if you don't have the first one, that would be the one to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Matt Sharp + friends = a very strong and cohesive album........2003-10-24

I really enjoy listening to the Rentals second album `Seven More Minutes'.

The Rentals are Matt Sharp `Weezer's' bassist and his band of members playing guitars, moog, syths, and drums. With Petra Haden's from That Dog and Maya Rudolph's heavenly voices alternately signing or backing Matt in most of the songs. Guest vocalists include Miki Berenyi from `Lush', Tim Wheeler from `Ash', Donna Mathews from `Elastica', and Damon Albarn from `Blur'. Even though there are a lot of guests Matt is in charge and is able to make the album totally work and not sound like his guests album.

The album is rock/pop and it perfectly crafts together the different instruments and vocals to make an album of strong songs with musical/vocal progressions that evoke different moods. Each song is different than the other while still allowing the album to be cohesive.

(Getting By, The Cruise, Barcelona, Keep Sleeping, Must be Wrong) Are fun rock/pop songs.

(Hello, hello) is a rock/pop songs but not as fun as the ones above.

(She says it's Alright, Overlee, It's Alright (reprise), My head is in the sun, Jumping Around.) are slower pop/rock ballad type songs. However, about half way through `Overlee' has a progression of moog/synths and guitars that gets pretty heavy.

(Say Goodbye Forever, The Man with two brains) are sexy rock songs courtesy of Donna Mathews of Elastica, Sharon Mcconochie, and Petra Haden.

Big Daddy C. is a cool rappy rock/pop song with a strong chorus courtesy of Damon Albarn of Blur.

Insomnia is a fast rock song.

From what I read Matt Sharp spent some time in Europe and most of the songs are able to portray the atmosphere of the subjects of the lyrics. From parties, to women that are more than friends but not exclusive, to dealing with emotions and feelings that reinforce and sometimes contradict this commitment free lifestyle.

`Seven minutes later' is a well-made fun-rocking album that I recommend.

5 out of 5 stars The Rentals Rule.......2000-07-07

The Rentals have once again won my affection with this ode to hedonism, Seven More Minutes. Quirky lyrics and catchy melodies combine for a tour de force like no other for the last several years. This Japanese edition is even more recommended as it has a bonus b-side entitled "The Great Bank Robbery". Like the other tracks on the album, the Rentals execute their performance with perfection. I have compared it to a mix between Jumping Around (From the this album) and the Beatle's Rocky Raccoon. Whether this Japanese edition or their others, this albu is an absolute must for any rock, new wave, or Weezer fan!
