Amazon.com essential recording

Before Broadway was Disneyfied and Times Square became a mall, the best Broadway musicals were being written for Disney animated features by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman. Their songs for The Little Mermaid created the mold from which their even more popular work (Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin) would be cast. Almost every tune in Mermaid has its (slightly inferior) counterpart in Beauty, for example. But there's no topping the Oscar-winning calypso show-stopper, "Under the Sea"--in which a Caribbean crab convinces you that "Darlin' it's better/Down where it's wetter." Other songs, just as delightful, are even more impressive in the context of the movie. The rapturous "Kiss the Girl" accompanies a scene in which, despite the whispered urgings of creatures all around, the romantic hero does not act on the title's advice! That's the kind of abstract dramatic (OK, comedic) conceit you'd expect from Harold Pinter rather than Disney. And the gruesomely hilarious "Les Poissons" gives us a fisheye view of a kitchen where the seafood chef is a sort of French Ed Gein--a sadistic murderer who brutally tortures and chops up his victims, then eats them! Who says Disney never did black comedy? "...I stuff you with bread/It won't hurt, 'cause you're dead/And you're certainly lucky you are...." Lyricist Ashman may not have been Cole Porter, but he was the next best thing. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Loved it then. Loved it now........2007-04-10

Little Mermaid was the first video I ever owned myself. Loved it from the first day I saw it. I don't hold the same view as I did as a child but it's still a wonderful story. And the music is just plain fun. The best part of this special edition is Ashley Tisdale's rendition of Kiss The Girl. Let me start by saying I have issues about Disney's need to turn every actor into a singer and every singer into an actor and the promote them to the ends of the earth. And it's not so much Ashley Tisdale - though she's very talented - that makes me love this version of the song. Whoever revised the arrangement is who I'd like to really thank. I love every thing about how this version was put together. Upbeat. Fun. Totally "sqeeable". But then I'm a hopeless romantic.

5 out of 5 stars Under da Sea.......2007-03-05

We actually own the CD that was originally released when the movie was first released. It is one of our favorites. I'm not sure what several others are talking about when they say this one has the origninal score. The CD's have the same exact music, with the exception of the 2nd CD. As for the songs on the 2nd CD, we have heard several on Radio Disney. They are okay once you get passed the whole remake issue. I actually enjoy the Jonas Brothers version of Poor Unfortunate Souls.

5 out of 5 stars little mermaid soundtrack.......2007-02-21

i bought this for my 5 year old --who loves ariel and all the princesses---it is great for her she loves to sing and dance to all the songs and she knows the songs inside and out--i recomend this product if your child loves the movie she will love this soundtrack

5 out of 5 stars a brilliant rebirth in film and song.......2006-11-24

by 1989, disney animation was pretty much dead, the department itself was pretty close to getting axed. basically all hopes were riding on the little mermaid. cinematically it is of course a gem and it managed to bring about the renowned disney rennisaince that lasted untill around the mid to late 1990's. musically, this soundtrack jumpstarted the dead musical genre as well. alan menken and howard ashman teamed up for the first time on a disney picture wiht amazing results.

alan menken's first of four academy award winning scores is a musical gem. the intense flourishes on the main titles and in the happy ending finale are truly beautiful but the fun lighter tone that the majority of the score takes on is great to hear. the score really lightens up the piece and gives it an airiness (ironically enough) and allows the whole piece to really take on a fun fresh sound that is crucial for the film to work

SCORE 5 out of 5

as far as the songs go, this may just be the most consistanly good soundtrack all the songs are fun and fresh but advance the story well. no other album really contains as many sure fire hits as this one. menken and ashman made great songs here that utilize the necessary carribean influences that are truly wonderful.

FATHOMS BELOW - this is a fun opener that provides a great sense of nautical mythology and fun. it sets the film up well for the following songs that are obveously meant to juxtapose it. originally, the song was longer, but jeffery katzanberg required that ashman shorten the lyrics, the original extended version can be found on the special edition 2006 dvd.
5 out of 5

DAUGHTERS OF TRITON - this short little snipet introduces all of ariel's sisters. its pretty bland and dry and thankfully its quick. if it were longer it would definately bring the entire soundtrack down, but luckilly its short and over with quickly
3 out of 5

PART OF YOUR WORLD - this is ariel's only real song and it is truly beautiful. her song of longing is emotional and jodi benson's vocals take to a whole other level. many have covered this song, but none have topped benson's heartfealt version that combines longing and real sorrow. A+
5 out of 5

PART OF YOUR WORLD (REPRISE) - here is that trademark mermaid-on-rock scene from the movie and the fact that benson gets to belt out the ending bars makes this a real treat even though its so short, but this definately ranks right up there with the full version, and possibly tops it.
5 out of 5

UNDER THE SEA - this fun song was the oscar winner for best original song and it combines great carribean rhythms and sounds wiht fun fresh and witty lyrics to epitomize the fun and freshness that the little mermaid brought to the screen. the infecteous song is one that jsut stays in your head and wont leave too, but its all ok since this is such a great song.
5 out of 5

POOR UNFORTUNATE SOULS - this is ursula's big number and pat caroll is amazing at it. this song is wickidly entertaining and great. the darkly comic tone and cabaret feel make this a great vilian song and a great song in general. the incredable rollar coaster of intensities make this an impressive number that never loses the audience's interest impressively enough.
5 out of 5

LES POISSONS - this song has gotten a lot of credit for its comedic strengths, but really this is the weakest song on the whole soundtrack. it's just too comical and goes too far over the top. it fits well in the film, but feels mildly disjointed on the soundtrack itself.
4 out of 5

KISS THE GIRL - this is the second oscar nominated song and it is possibly the best of all. the combination of soft vocals provided by samuel e wright and the great soft tropical rhythms make this song an unexpected winner. on paper, these combinations are strange for a defining love song, but it all comes together with great ease.
5 out of 5

SONGS OVERALL 5 out of 5

this entire piece brings an impressive combination of airiness and emotion to make a musical soundtrack that is truly spectacular. menken and ashman showed for the first time their true greatness when working together. this piece isn't their greatest, but it was a great starting point that revitilized what a movie musical and disney film could truly be. this timeless classic is a wonder to hear and never gets old or tired.

5 out of 5 stars JUST like the movie!.......2006-10-25

Listening to this in it's entirety is almost as great as watching the movie. My daughter gets happy when she hears the first couple of notes and runs to the TV thinking the movie is on. I was really planning on buying the original CD that was released in 1988 because there were not many reviews for this new release but I'm so glad I changed my mind. This CD sounds great and is truely a score of the movie. Every song is there. If you end up not liking the second CD, doesn't matter because the 1st cd is worth your money already, I didn't mind the 2nd cd but that's not why I purchased the set anyway. made no difference to me, we just keep the first one on repeat and love every minute of it.

3 out of 5 stars Nice collection!.......2007-05-21

As I mentioned in other reviews, I'm not into the greatest hits thing. I bought this cd because I love one of their songs (Cherokee People). I could not find the original album with that song anywhere else. This compilation is just OK.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Revere & the Raiders - Anthology CD.......2007-04-12

Definitive collection of all the hits of Paul Revere and the Raiders.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-02-16

The product I ordered was really worth the money. I enjoy music, especially old classic rock. I have been looking in all the music shops for this particular CD. So,when I found it, I was so excited. I had to order it. It is just like the original album. I really enjoy listening to this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-01-16

Apparently Paul Revere & the Raiders went through member changes before I became familiar with them as a young teen, watching them on TV, and some of the Raiders I knew were not the original members, but this CD has all the great Raiders songs that I remember and then some. If you like Paul Revere & the Raiders, you'll like this CD, and you get a lot of songs on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great! But often overlooked........2007-01-06

If you like great 60's rock and roll you'll be delighted with this collection. I was pleasently surprised to hear material I'd not heard before and it sounded as fresh today as their music sounded to me in the 60's. The weakest tune IMHO is the first one "Louie Louie". I suppose it had to be included but it gets much better from that point on and really jams! When you need a positive mood change just through this on and remember!

5 out of 5 stars Any Hoyt is good Hoyt.......2007-04-22

Axton is as important to Americana as Dylan and Springsteen and deserves all the respect and attention given him and more. Seeing any CD release of his music is a pleasant suprise but many of his best are missing from this release. If you want Hoyt's best, you've got to have - 500 Miles, Hotel Ritz, Pride of Man, So Hard To Give It All Up, The Devil, Mountain Right, Cowboys On Horses With Wings, Wild Bull Rider, and the most beautiful song he ever sang: I Collect Hearts. Other glaring ommissions include- I Love To Sing, The Way Of The World, Southbound, I Left My Gal In The Mountains and California Women.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection of Hoyt Axton's songs.......2007-03-08

This CD is the best collection of Hoyt Axtons that I have found. I could not find much selection in retail stores.

5 out of 5 stars Best compilation of overlooked star.......2007-01-09

Hoyt Axton grew up in the business of making music. With obvious regard to his mother and her song writing efforts, Hoyt carried the family music torch for several decades. It's a mystery why he never quite got his just due with Billboard charts and radio air-play. No matter, if you're interested in country, folk, story songs, or just fine music, Hoyt Axton's Flashes of Fire will not disappoint!

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Retrospective.......2004-07-17

Flashes Of Fire's 25 diverse, brightly remastered tracks reach from a live '62 "Greenback Dollar" (later covered by the Kingston Trio) to 1990's whimsical "Fearless The Wonder Dog." For all the rock hits he penned (Three Dog Night's "Joy To The World" and "Never Been To Spain," Ringo Starr's "No No Song"), Hoyt Axton's albums and singles surprisingly never cracked Pop's top 40 - only Country's - though his literate, left-of-center writing was as far from mainstream country as it could get. A wide range of artists such as Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby and David Crosby were among those who covered him.

In the drug-hazy `60s and `70s, Axton's anti-drug songs never seemed square. Cheech & Chong make a cameo appearance on "No No Song." Steppenwolf's seering "The Pusher" cover powered Easy Rider's soundtrack. "Snow Blind Friend" (which Steppenwolf also did) viewed substance abuse with pity. As for Axton's country top-tenners, "Boney Fingers" showed his droll side, while "When The Morning Comes" (a duet with Linda Ronstadt) was, as its name implies, a beguiling morning-after song. A big bear of a man, Axton died at only 61 in 1999 after a career spanning writing, singing and Hollywood acting. His mom was Mae Axton who co-wrote Elvis' "Heartbreak Hotel."

      5 out of 5 stars Great Band.......2007-03-31

This band produced alot of good songs back in the 60's.
Their most well known song and a huge hit was House Of The Rising Sun.Thats got a tune that just seems to stick in you head.Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood is another one of my favorites here.Eric Burdon and the band had a special sound. We Gotta Get Out Of This Place is another big hit i love that tune. It's My Life is another well known song from the Animals.San Franciscan Nights is a song i also like.
Bands like this were around for a short time, but made some of the best songs.

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTE ANIMALS 1964-1968.......2007-03-31

ONE OF THE BEST CD'S I HAVE EVER PURCHASED. LOVE IT!! LOVE IT!! LOVE IT!!

      5 out of 5 stars A must have compliation!.......2007-03-13

I had long been looking for a compliation that had both House of Rising Sun and San Franciscan Nights (original recordings), and found it in this compliation. If you are looking for The Animals and don't want to buy singles, and if your are afraid you will end up with alternative recordings (which there are many) then this the compliation to have.

5 out of 5 stars This is an incredibly great album, but if I were making a US copy..........2007-02-01

First and foremost I should say that this is an incredably great album, with great sound quality, and should definately be in anyone's collection that appreciates good rock 'n' roll, R & B, or blues. It packs a lot for just one disc. However, if a US company were to make something similar I would suggest the following:

      For the Animals section:
      1. Omit "Baby Let Me Take You Home" (not a big US hit...as a mater of fact it wasn't even on the radio). It may have been a big hit in the UK, but it was nothing here.

      2. Omit "Inside, Looking Out" for the same reason, plus more people are use to the Grand Funk Railroad version.

      3. Try to find the original radio played version of "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" (It is available on "Retrospective". Yes you need to get another Greatest hits CD, but if you have a burner, you can edit it to your taste). This version isn't too bad, but I'm use to hearing, "See my daddy in bed a dyin'" (not "WATCH my daddy in bed a dyin'").

For the Eric Burdon & The Animals Section:

      1. Move "Good Times" up between "When I Was Young", and "San Francisco Nights" (I think it was the flip side to SF Nights, but I was quite young and cant remember).

      2. Omit "Ring Of Fire" from the album. This may have been a hit in Austrailia, and the UK, but did nothing in the US.

      3. Omit Animals Interviews (This is a music album, and although informative, isn't great to listen to while driving in your car, or playing at a party).

      4. (with Good Times in it's new slot)After "Sky Piolot Pt.'s 1 & 2", put the following songs on the disc:
"White Houses" (Was released on Every One Of Us, and was considered a US greatest hit, but use the (longer guitar solo) album cut).
"St. James Infermary" (actually this is kind of an option in taste. "Year of the Guru" was a bigger AM radio hit than St. James, but St. James hit the FM radio circuit a lot harder, and in my opinion is a lot better. Again, from Every One Of Us).
"River Deep, Mountain High" (from Love Is album, this was an especially great song, and considered a greatest hit in the US. Again, use the album cut).
      5. Leave "Colored Rain" as the last track. Considering that the guitar solo is by (future Police guitarist) Andy Summer, it is historically significant, plus this is the longest studio guitar solo that he would ever play (aprox. 4 minutes).

I've made a lot of critiques from an American rock 'n' roller point of view, but the simple fact is that this is the only album that really has both the Animals, and EB & the Animals best. Unless some US record company listens to my suggestion in the near future (which I doubt will ever happen), then this is the one to get.

5 out of 5 stars Another fantastic Juice Newton collection from Raven Records!.......2007-06-27

First of all, a standing ovation for Raven Records for issuing Juice Newton's "Dirty Looks" album on CD! The album was released in 1983, one year before the CD format became an industry standard, and the album never made it to CD ... until now! Thank you, Raven Records!!! And more cheers to you for a wonderful remastering job on these two classic albums!

      Now, about the music ...

If someone wanted to experience Juice Newton's stylistic and vocal ranges, I'd recommend the two albums contained on this CD compilation. Juice Newton is one of very few artists in music history who successfully blended pop and country and achieved multi-platinum crossover success - and the music here shows just how talented this extraordinary vocalist is.

The 1985 RCA release "Old Flame" is a decidedly country effort (and Newton's biggest hit in the genre). A huge commercial success, the album features three #1 country smashes and three additional Top Ten hits. Here, Raven has compiled all 11 tracks that appeared on various editions of the original album (the final track was "Let Your Woman Take Care Of You" or "Both To Each Other", depending on which version of "Old Flame" you happened to buy). If you are familar with country radio from the mid to late '80s, you'll undoubtedly recognize Newton's cathartic reading of Timi Turo's "Hurt" and the up-beat, rollicking "You Make Me Want To Make You Mine" (the latter of which garnered Newton a Grammy nomination for Best Female Vocalist). Other hits are here as well, such as the sparely produced yet powerful title song. Mixed in with the half-dozen hits are five other great songs, including Newton's should-have-been-released-as-a-single cover of Steeler Wheel's "Stuck In The Middle With You", as well as a folk-rock version of The Byrds' "Feel A Whole Lot Better". All in all, "Old Flame" is a solid country album with a roots rock edge to it. Sure, some of the tracks feature sonic licks specific to the '80s, but Newton's exemplary vocals are the focus here -- and this is one lady who sure can sing! Also, when "Old Flame" was recorded, Newton had recently recovered form surgery on her vocal chords, and there is an undeniable gruffness to her voice, which really works for the songs on this album.

After presenting "Old Flame", this collection travels back in time to 1983 and embraces the "Dirty Looks" album, Newton's final album for Capitol Records. While not as commercially successful as Newton's platinum "Juice" (1981) and "Quiet Lies" (1982) albums, "Dirty Looks" went Silver (250,000 copies sold) in the U.S. and Gold in Canada, and the album cemented Newton's reputation as an artist equally comfortable singing pop and country. The album starts jarringly with the over-produced title track, a rock-infused single that stalled at #90 on the Hot 100, making it Newton's lowest-charting of all 11 of her pop-chart singles. Luckily, the album relaxes and gets focused starting with the second track, "Tell Her No", the album's only bona-fide hit single (AC #14/Pop #27). From that point on, "Dirty Looks" is a deftly produced, rollercoaster ride of pop styles, including a roots rock number: the unforgettable "Keeping Me On My Toes". On this standout track, Newton gets huge points for sassily singing delicious lyrics like, "There was a hot-lipped, big-hipped part-time waitress/Shaking it across the floor/You were observin' everything she was servin'/I think that she has served you before". Other great tracks are "Runaway Hearts", "Twenty Years Ago" (later covered by Kenny Rogers, who topped the charts with it!), "Til I Loved You" (later a hit for Restless Heart, a group that got its name from a 1984 Juice Newton song!), and the gorgeous lullaby "For Believers", written by Newton's longtime musical partner Otha Young. It's a real shame that Capitol Records refused to promote the "Dirty Looks" album (Newton had decided to leave the label, and Capitol was ticked off), because the company deprived the public of some really great pop music!

If you are a Juice Newton fan, buying this CD is a no-brainer. Or if you are just interesting in getting to know her remarkable country-pop, cut your teeth on Raven Records' "Juice/Quiet Lies" CD release, followed by this collection. The four albums contained on the two disks showcase one of the most popular artists of the `80s at the peak of her career. (Note: If you choose to buy "Juice/Quiet Lies", do yourself a favor and don't buy the domestic release by Collectables. That company's version is not re-mastered, whereas Raven Records' version is BEAUTIFULLY re-mastered and sounds terrific and crisp!)

(Note to Raven Records: Only two of Juice Newton's solo albums have yet to be released on CD: "Take Heart" and "Well Kept Secret". My fingers are crossed in hopes that you will issue those! And an excellent bonus track would be "Let's Keep It That Way," a one-off single that was Juice Newton's first Top 40 hit! Please, please, please?)

      Amazon.com

The soundtrack to Disney's 2004 Cinderella sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement offers a wide variety of young Disney stars (Raven--who has a small part in the movie--Lindsay Lohan, Jesse McCartney, Christy Carlson Romano), hot vocalists (American Idol's Kelly Clarkson, Norah Jones), and head-banging rockers (Avril Lavigne, Pink). The best tracks are Clarkson's "Breakaway," Raven's "This Is My Time," Renee Olstead's Norah-esque "A Love That Will Last," and "Your Crowning Glory," a duet between Raven and Julie Andrews. It's not a flashy showcase for Andrews, who begins it in a half-sung, half-spoken style before Raven joins her to a funky beat. But just hearing the beloved film and stage star sing at all after the problems she's experienced following botched vocal-cord surgery in the late '90s... well, it might just bring a tear to your eye. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Good Songs from the Movie.......2007-01-05

These are songs from the moive. They are great songs.

      4 out of 5 stars Surprise, Surprise..........2006-03-10

I love the movies, so I checked out what kind of soundtrack that would accompany it...and, surprisingly, it was a really good blend of light inspiring pop and soft romantic ballad, true to the sense of the movie, that Mia, has grown up a lot, but still has a little ways to go. My favorite tracks include or course the lucious-sounding "Love Me Tender" by Norah Jones and the Jazzy "Love That Will Last" by Renee Olstead who is only 14 years old with that beautifully aged voice! This is not my absolute favorite soundtrack, but the most surprising one. The music editor for the film gets high marks for matching music to film so wonderfully.

4 out of 5 stars Not my favorite but worth of buying.......2006-01-10

What can I say? It haves some great songs and some I always skip when I listen to this album.

First two songs (Breakaway, I Decide) were pretty good, not my all-time favorite, but really, really good! I don't like Lindsay, but this her song rock. Kelly is great as always.
      Breakaway - 3.5/5
      I Decide - 4/5

3rd, Raven's song, This is my Time is one of my two fave songs on album. It's great and bit strange, but it have contest and words are easy to remember. Not much for dancing, but great!
This is my time - 5/5

I always get what I want and Trouble are Ok I guess. I'm not much into Rock/Hip Hop or that kind of music, I'm more for 'sweet' kind, if you get my, but this are good songs for parties and they are trendy.
      I Always Get What I want - 3/5
      Trouble - 2.5/5

To be quite honest, I tried to like Jesse McCartney, but I can't... His voice isn't anything special and his songs are usually boring. Because you live is his best song if you ask me, but still not something 'WOW'.
      Because you live - 2.5/5

Love Me Tenderly haves good sound, sweet, light, romantic, but not anything what I don't hear everyday. It becomes boring after while and I never have chance to listen it all.
      Love me Tenderly - 2/5

Fun In the Sun, Let's Bounce, Dance, Dance, Dance and Fools are tracks that I always skeep. They are just.... boring. I don't like them, at al.
Fun In the Sun - 0.25/5
      Let's Bounce - 1/5
      Dance, Dance, Dance - 0.5
      Fools - 1.25/5

After 4 pretty boring song, there comes A Love That Will Last who amazing! Renee haves wonderful voice and she's only year older then me when she sang this song. When I found out that, I needed to play this song to everybody and ask them how many years they think this girl has. They all didn't believe me that she's only 15. My 2nd fave song on this album.
      A Love That Will Last - 5/5

Julie Andrews's voice isn't good as it was, but she still can sing. After all, look how many years she haves! Raven is great, of cores, the song has good lyric, rime, tune and it's great.
      Your Crowing Glory - 4.5/5

Although it took me while to understand that Jonny is singing on Chinese in Miracles Happen, this song is great also! Maybe fun, but have good lyric and tune. I like it!
      Miracles Happen - 4/5

You'll probably wonder why I like this album so much when I don't like so amny songs: Song what are bad, are bad. But songs what are good are perfect! Only cause them I bought this album, and I didn't repent any moment.

      5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2005-10-09

If you've been looking for a definitive collection of one of Country Music's premier songwriters, well, here it is. This is a Raven Records release (Australian) and I admit to be a bit hesitant to order it. But, the sound and mixing is just fine and well worth the affordable price. This CD contains 25 songs (4 bonus tracks; including "Detroit City"). The earliest Mel hits are here, including "Sawmill", "Midnight....", and "Arms of a Fool". Best of all, they're Original, not lame re-recordings. There's also a fine set of liner notes which provide a detailed bio and quick-discography review of Mel for the decade of '70-'80. Get it while it's still available.

5 out of 5 stars Eastwood Smile, Robert Redford Hair .......2006-07-12

I hate to sound like a broken record in my reviews, but here's another career retrospective that has been needed for years. Mel Tillis was a fine singer in that 1970s vein of country music, and he was an even better writer (Detroit City, now thats a song). Another victim of shoddy collections, Tillis gets his due in this nice lineup of hits and some lesser known interpretations of his compositions that hit for other singers. My favorite Tillis cut has to be "Send Me Down to Tuson," though "Coca Cola Cowboy" and "I've Got the Horse" are up there. And there are real nice liner notes. Why did an Australian company have to do this release, don't American labels understand what they have in the vaults? And again the broken record--dare we dream of a Bear Family box!

Raven presents, for the first time on CD, one of the greatest live recordings ever! By 1979, BOBBY BARE had been recording for 25 years yet when he strapped on a Fender Telecaster and recorded live in the studio a rough and rowdy album with a bunch of Nashville's finest musicians, he was set to hit new highs in an illustrious career. Down & Dirty was both a glorious last hurrah for the `outlaw' movement and a touchstone for the `new country' of current darlings Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson etc. According to AMG's Thom Jurek it is, "Bare in his element: live, rowdy, and dangerous. This is good-time outlaw country. Bare's band rocks and rolls, swings and strolls through 13 tracks from a rejuvenated Bare. The humor is in large supply; the poignancy is everywhere. But it's the tune selection that makes this is such a killer record." For every outrageous Shel Silverstein song (Numbers, Qualudes Again) there is a tender, sensitive or just plain poetic masterpiece. In the words of Bill Graham, "Bobby Bare is the Bruce Springstein of country music". Embellished with eight stunning bonus tracks, circa 1978-1980, this is good time outlaw country at its finest. Comes with an 8-page booklet with detailed liner notes.

      5 out of 5 stars A country western classic.......2007-03-26

What a pleasure to discover that one of the all-time great country-western albums was finally on a CD. Bobby Bare is a singer's singer, a favorite of better known performers like Willie Nelson and Kris Kristoffersen. When he teamed with songwriter Shel Silverstein on rollicking ballads like "Pour Me Another Tequilla, Sheila" and "Numbers," the result was ingenious, literate, up-tempo fun. From the sad tale of bluesman "Blind Willie Harper" to the lyrical truth that "Some Days are Diamonds," there isn't a wrong note in this album.

5 out of 5 stars Classic! It was worth the wait........2007-03-02

Of course this cd finally is released after I jumped through all the necessary hoops to convert my vinyl LP to CD! Even so, I'm thrilled to have the cd at last, not only for the improved sound quality over my converted format, but for the additional tunes. Bare was never better than on this album, and that's saying something. Pointed, poignant, facetious, playful, even angry and bitter -- he displays the full range of emotions here, and never, ever goes over the top. IMHO this is one of the top 10 country LPs of all time. When the Tim McGraws and the Kenny Chesneys of the entertainment world can display this kind of range and talent, I'll buy'em, but not until.

      5 out of 5 stars FINALLY!.......2006-12-11

      5 out of 5 stars It's been a long time coming.......2006-12-08

Thank heavens they finally released "Down & Dirty" on CD! My cassette of it gave way years ago and I have been searching for the CD since. This is truly one of the best recordings ever made.

5 out of 5 stars The True Country Outlaw.......2006-11-27

I can't add much more to the terrific and comprehensive album review that sums up in a nutshell what Bobby Bare has done for Country Music.
I have this album as well as the bonus tracks on vinyl and although the quality of the tracks are excellent and the fact that I have already converted them to a cd, this has not stopped me ordering this album.

There has never been an equal to Bobby Bare in song rendition. He interprets the songs with such meaning that you can actually live inside of them.

Because he was so many years ahead of the dreary country scene at the time, he never received the recognition that was due to him. Therefore, this album will be appreciated in this day and age much more than it did in its time.

I rate this as a true masterpiece from a man that should have been inducted to the Country Hall Of Fame a long time ago. If I as a South African can appreciate the "Bare" then all I can say is "Wake up American country fans and smell the roses". Do something about this injustice to Country Music
