An outstanding collection of Rutter's hymns.......2005-11-22
This collection includes many of Rutter's church hymns recorded over a period of 20 years performed by The Cambridge Singers, a group of Brits, that are conducted by the composer. Ergo, these performances must be considered definitive.
Many of Rutter's popular hymns are included here. "O be joyful to the Lord" and "All things bright and beautiful", a popular children's hymn done here by adults, follow "Wings of the morning" on tracks 5-7. Others you may have performed in church represented here are "O clap your hands", "Lord make me an instrument of your peace", "For the beauty of the earth", "Look at the world" and "The Lord bless you and keep you" among the 21 assembled hymns.
While The Cambridge Singers, on their Web site, identify themselves principally as an a capella group, I was pleased when I received this CD to find all the hymns supported by a full orchestra, the esteemed City of London Sinfonia. The renditions are uniformly lovely although some listeners may find the singing a bit on the white side lacking brilliance and individuality. Everything is done in keeping with Rutter's score markings and style.
The recording tends to be a little variable given the 20-plus year difference in performances. The most recent copyright listing is 2003, the same year "Wings of the morning" was published. I don't hear an appreciable difference in that recording than the others but still hear some age in older works.
If you seek a Rutter hymn collection you can't go wrong here. You have wonderful English performers mated to the composer in his more popular works. I'd recommend this without reservation to anyone seeking this collection.

Afi's Harshest and Least Polished Work; Rage.......2006-10-23
Let me let you in on a little secret; all AFI is good. That's right ALL. Another secret; AFI is my favorite band of all time. Why? I'll show you.
'We are the Ones with the radiating eyes. We are the Ones who have a fire inside. We are the Ones only we can recognize. We've been rejected...'
...and that's the opening for this album, which is AFI's third. It's their harshest, angriest, meanest effort to date, and I don't think they will ever go back to this.
The sound? Fast and aggressive. The lyrics? Fast and pissed off! At one point, Davey's voice audibly cracks with the sheer rage-driven emotion that can't be found on any other AFI. Black_Sails_In_The_Sunset comes close, but it's better in other ways.
'Do you understand what I'm trying to say? Have you ever felt? Ever felt this way? Tainted with rage that you can't drain away or it will cost you your life.'...
...and that's the essesnce of this album. Davey Havok's lyrics are always poetic, unlike any other punk rock band anywhere, but here they trade in some of the band's later elloquence for sheer rage, and the result is an excellent, if slightly unpolished, representation of what the band has to offer.
So, if you like hardcore punk-rock, this is your AFI album.
And as for you who say AFI is not hardcore enough for you, go listen to harder music. If Slayer's Reign_In_Blood don't do it for you, try Converge's You_Fail_Me, or some Pig_Destroyer. But don't down a good band because they're not your kind of music.
For people who can appreciate AFI, and not just hardcore music, see also AFI-Black_Sails_In_The_Sunset, and AFI-The_Art_Of_Drowning. You won't be dissapointed.
PS For people new to AFI, I recommend starting at the middle with The_Art_Of_Drowning.
AFI's best...the AFI that could have been.......2006-07-28
let me start by saying this. if you are a scenester kid who wants some mellow, depressing, self-loathing, and watered down goth lite type of music, stick with art of drowning, and the two follow-ups to that release. this album IS hardcore. great album to play at a super loud volume along with bands like 7 Seconds and Black Flag. perfect example of how hard this one is..the song "let it be broke." you know, the one that goes "i will release myself..." ..that song shreds!
i think i know why afi started to get worse after this. the addition of guitarist jade. i mean black sails is a good album, but with every album after this one, they grew worse and worse until they reached the point where they are today...cheesy enough to be placed alongside green day and godawful fallout boy...the sad thing is, they could have been great beyond recognition if they would have kept going in the direction that this album promised.
again, if you want hardcore/punk get this or anything before it. if your scenester, you probably are just reading this page because you hate it or loved the new stuff so much that you want to get the rest.
Loud, fast, agressive, and pissed off!.......2006-07-15

Long a favorite of amateur choristers, John Rutter's three-movement Gloria is by turns touching and thrilling, alternating soaring vocal lines with contemporary harmonies, catchy rhythms, and the power of the Phillip Jones Brass Ensemble. The premiere recording, with Rutter himself conducting his Cambridge Singers, is filled out with 10 of his short anthems, including the sprightly "O Clap Your Hands," the serenely beautiful "A Gaelic Blessing," and "The Lord Is My Shepherd" movement from his Requiem. --David HoriuchiAlbum Description
Gloria: The sacred music of John Rutter. Contains the Gloria, a seventeen minute work that is one of our continous best sellers. Other titles are some of John Rutter's most popular anthems.Customer Reviews:
Glorious!.......2005-10-05
--Music--
The Gloria is a piece in three movements. The Philip Jones Brass Ensemble performs with the Cambridge Singers and soloists Mary Seers, Mary Hitch, and Caroline Ashton. This includes organ music and timpani/percussion. The Gloria is one of Rutter's earliest works, written as a commissioned piece for an American group (Voices of Mel Olson, Omaha, Nebraska). The three movements are reminiscent of standard symphonic structure. The outer movements are more boisterous ('make a joyful noise unto the Lord'), whereas the middle movement is more introspective and subdued.
The other pieces included here are anthems, bright and cheery, fully orchestrated and performed with spirit. There are three pieces that are a capella, reflecting Rutter's and the Cambridge Singers' passion for this medium.
--Liner Notes--
The notes include an introduction to the CD by Rutter describing some of the influences and expressions in his composition. Lyrics are included, and where the original is in Latin, an English translation is provided. There is no listing of the performers of the Cambridge Singers, no description of the group, nor biographical information about John Rutter.
--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.
This is a glorious recording!

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence. If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

After some extremely confusing personnel shakeups, the 1997 Yes configuration--including classic members Jon Anderson, Steve Howe, Chris Squire, and Alan White, plus new keyboardist Billy Sherwood--emerged with this surprisingly strong effort that manages to maintain Yes's familiar prog-rock sound without making the band sound like a museum piece. New numbers like "New State of Mind," "Open Your Eyes," and "Fortune Seller" blend the band's progressive inclinations with solidly crafted melodies that place them among the band's catchiest creations. --Scott SchinderCustomer Reviews:
In retrospect, it's not that bad........2007-06-27
I listened to Keys 2 first, because it had all the classic elements that I wanted to hear in a Yes album and, of course, loved it. But when I got to this album, I was disappointed when I noticed Rick Wakeman wasn't on it. And who is Billy Sherwood? I gave it a shot, and was quickly disappointed. I felt like Yes was trying too hard to recapture their 80's pop sound. It genuinely sounded like an album that should have come out in 1985, not 1997. It was too poppy, and there were many songs that sounded sappy and cheesy. I didn't outright hate it, as it did have some really good moments, and an undeniable Yes sound. But it was just so disappointing because I thought Yes was moving away from this kind of music and closer to their prog roots.
Well, I just listened to again recently, and it's a lot better than I remembered it. Yes, it still sounds like an album that should have come out in the 80s, and it's nowhere's near as good as their classic prog stuff from the 70s. But it also sounds ... fresh. Which is a bit strange considering the band were 30 years old at this point. But it sounds more fresh than the studio stuff on Keystudio, and the vocals actually sound better than they do on most recent Yes albums.
I've noticed that one of the reasons I don't like recent Yes albums as much as older Yes albums is because of the vocals. While I still love Jon's voice, I feel his style more recently has deteriorated on the newer songs. He still sounds great as always when he sings the old stuff, but on the more recent songs, something just doesn't sound right. He tends to sing a lot more than he did on the older albums, where he used to let the instruments take over for long passages, and he also tends to sing more repetitively. It does get a little grating at times, unfortunately.
This album actually doesn't have that problem. Well, it does a little bit, but I think Sherwood's influence actually helped this album subdue it a bit. Hopefully, Yes will put out another Yes album and Jon will let the instruments play more of a lead role. Time will tell. In the meantime, give this one a shot and try to put all preconceptions aside.
What happened ?.......2007-03-07
Surprise ! Maybe the worst Yes album since Tormato or Big Generator.
Is the band out of inspiration ? Surely not, their next album, "The ladder" succeeded where "Open your eyes" failed, in the same style...
The only good track is the opening one ""New state of Mind", the rest is so-so....I am deceive but I forgive them, they haven't deceive me very often :)
The best album since "Big Generator".......2007-03-05
WHY ARE YOU A YESFAN?.......2006-10-12
The reason I listen to YES is that their music is always majestic and uplifting. The three constants of this band are the great musicianship, the great singing and harmonies, and the positive spiritual lyrics in the form of Jon's wonderful poetry. And I take umbrage to the quote by one fan in his Spotlight review: "Jon's new-age cosmic jive lyrics." And he compares YES to The Beatles. Huh? What the...? C'mon, how do you draw that comparison? Because there are harmonies? Then he says, "SOMEHOW, SOMEDAY is filler." Please, it's the best track on the album and reminds me of Jon's epic HEARTS!! You don't understand YES at all!! Even though he's been called "The Little Tyrant" by members of the band because he's a perfectionist, you should know BY NOW that Jon Anderson is a very gentle soul and his spiritual lyrics have always been about LOVE and so-called "new age" themes. Jon is spiritual, not religious. And spiritually open minded people are always tagged with that new age label. It's unintelligent and cliche. The world needs MORE people like Jon!! What band has this guy been listening to all these years!?! If his lyrics are "new age cosmic jive" to you, why are you even listening to YES? Go buy and listen to Marilyn Manson or Death Metal if this kind of artistry puts you off. I don't get it. (By the way, I've met Jon and he's a very giving and kind soul. Just as you'd expect.) There is far too much talk of this kind coming from so-called YESFANS. Hand in your fan club membership, I absolve you of your fan status. I'd hate to sit next to a fan like this at one of their shows. Please, if you don't like YES music, just say so. Why do you keep buying their music? When I stop liking a band, I certainly don't continue to buy their music and then write reviews about how bad it is. Stop telling the band what they should and shouldn't be doing with their music. And stop telling the fans this song is no good because it's doesn't sound like some other song and the lyrics are too "new age." I'm tired of this kind of armchair criticism. Unfortunately, a lot of so-called YESFANS are negative close minded human beings. Those fans who profess a liking for a band like YES, that sing of LOVE in such profound ways, sure have trouble spreading that word around.
Is this a good album? By all means, this is an Underrated YES recording. It's as GOOD as any other YES album in my collection. I listen to it just as much as any other YES album I own. It matches all the criteria for me to consider it a GREAT YES album. The production is LOUD and POWERFUL. Great musicianship, great harmonies, and uplifting lyrical themes. What more do you want? It's just music, my friends. And very good music at that. It's not TALES. It's not 90125. It's not GOING FOR THE ONE. And it's not CLOSE TO THE EDGE. It is however, OPEN YOUR EYES!! And it's great!! Repeat after me, OPEN YOUR EYES!! YES!! Open your eyes to another great YES album!! You might find something positive and uplifting in it. And isn't that why you listen to YES? All you negative fans should give up this band, stay away, and leave our YES alone. Real YESFANS like them just the way they are.
To all the fans who continually rag on and on about Jon and his lyrics or his singing, (that Jon "sings too much" is another common complaint that I'm tired of hearing), find another band to praise. Jon Anderson and his ART are the SPIRITUAL CENTER and HEART of YES!! Learn it, know it, live it.
Get this. IT'S A CLASSIC!! no matter what the haters may say. Much LOVE to all REAL YESFANS!! I feel your pain. Oh, well. At least some of the fans GET IT!! I hope you get it too. Sorry about the harangue. But, I'm sick of reading these crappy reviews.
ENJOY.
A fine cd with excelent songs by YES!!!!!.......2006-02-25
This cd is the first without TREVOR RABIN, but sounds as he is still there. This cd has a "brother" cd very similar in sound and songs to a solo cd by bassist Cris Squier and guitarr player and producer Billy Sherwood.
This collection of songs by YES mix the sound the band had with TREVOR RABIN with the old sound as a so called progressive band.
The best song is "Open Your Eyes", but also the rest of the cd stands out well. The only observation i have is that if you listen to it completely you somehow get lost even tho Bassist Cris Squire gets the chance to sing on a couple of songs. Other good songs are "Fortune Teller", "Universal Garden" and the bautiful "Wonderlove". This is a very satisfying cd. GET IT!
