Far from the annoying little bug that leaves small welts from its bites, the New York City trio Mosquitos is a charming combo that enchants with a sexy mix of bossa nova and indie pop. While the music doesn't quite swing as real bossa nova and samba does, Brazilian singer Juju's breathy vocals (she sings in both English and Portuguese) add just the right amount of sensual authenticity. The New York contingent of Chris Root and John Marshall Smith handle light-hearted guitar, burbling Wurlitzer organ and the low budget drum machine, alternately creating an earnest bedroom pop aesthetic and a more sophisticated bossa-pop sound: imagine if Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66 had recorded at a Brooklyn apartment home studio in the new millennium. Highlights include the poppy "Rainsong," the playful bossa nova "Boombox," and the funny "Policeman," in which the protagonist is looking to bribe the officer. This self-styled bedroom bossa nova is a warm ray of light on the rainiest of afternoons. --Tad Hendrickson

On their third album, this Brazilian-flavored, New York City-based trio make it clear that they're wielding a vivid palette, curious minds and active imaginations. The opening "Moonshine" finds a slide guitar being punctuated by exuberant drums, followed by a brief, airy vocal. It ends in less than a minute and a piano enters for the second number, with Chris Root's intimate singing sounding at once but like a sunny bossa nova chanteuse and a late night continental cabaret balladeer. In less than forty minutes Mosquito manage to offer up fifteen finely chiseled slices of refreshing songcraft. Anchored by guitar or keyboards, the melodies are hook-filled without being cloying. And all the while the percussion of JuJu Stulbach dances around and through the proceedings like a giddy bird. --David Greenberger

5 out of 5 stars I didn't think they could top Sunshine Barato. They did it!.......2006-10-26

Yup, they did it. They topped "Barato" big time, by creating something different from it. The sound is more mature and intimate, the instruments more varied and interesting. I'm so sorry I held off getting "III" under such false pretenses!

Note to the band's keyboardist: The Mellotron and acoustic piano flatter the band in a big big way!

5 out of 5 stars Their best sound to date. .......2006-09-24

I have been listening to the mosquitos since their first album when I saw them open up for Air. I was charmed from the beginning. I have seen them live several times and I am always impressed. This album has a sound that has evolved into a mature relationship between these musicians. It has lot's of new surprises but maintains your favorite qualities. Each song is a pleasure to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Brazilian twee -- a sugary, melodic treat.......2004-06-28

An absolute delight. Finding the perfect midway point between Brazilian cool and sugary indiepop twee, New York's Mosquitos feature vocals by Juju Stulbach, a Rio-born expatriate who combines the airy, insouciance of Astrud Gilberto with the flip, casual, DIY mellowness of the North American cutesy-pop crowd. There's a relaxed love of melody that suggests a debt to Yo La Tengo, as well as a simplicity and cleanness of line that brings New Zealand's The Bats to mind... Stulbach's Portuguese-language vocals are a highlight, with a fluidity and good-natured tone that should draw in any devotee of classic, roller-rinky Brazilian pop, as well as fans of BMX Bandits, Beat Happening and the whole Pacific Northwest lo-fi scene. Admittedly, the cutesy, naifish English-language lyrics of singer-guitarist Chris Root don't hold up as well to repeated listenings, but they put the record into the right context... In short, this is the perfect twee-pop album that native Brazilian indie bands have yet to create: it's lovely and dreamy, full of pretty sounds and foreign words... what's not to love?

4 out of 5 stars Grrreat live band!.......2004-05-01

I had never heard of this group before. But i just went to a concert by AIR and Mosquitos were opening for them. VERY good group. Left an impression on me. The Lead singer is a short spunky gal with lots of energy. Pick this up!

If you can get past the silliness of songs like "Juju and Blue," this is the Girl from Ipanema for the 21st Century.

3 out of 5 stars Mild Case of Malaria.......2004-03-11

It's impossible to listen to this singer or this music without using the words "seductive" or "irresistible". As giddy as you may feel listening to it, my gut feeling is you'll wake up the next morning feeling cranky, hungover and used. This is a band to have an affair with, but at the end of the day you'll want to go home to your wife.

3 out of 5 stars It's.... okay, actually........2004-01-16

This is soooooooo cheesy. Yet for the life of me, I cannot tell you why but there's just something about this cd that makes the cheesiness okay! The linear notes gives you a bit of background about their roots and how they came and nearly didn't come together - which was sort of interesting.

The music is very light and breezy. So many bands have a specific sound, like Les Hommes focus on the organs, Nouvelle has the clarinet and vibraphone, Nicola Conte is new bossa, etc. This group's sound is mostly guitar, slight percussion and a whoooole lot of synth. Some of the cuts that stood out to me were Boombox, Rainsong, Mosquito and Next To Me. Probably my favorite cut was actually Footsteps - it was a perfect soundtrack sort of song. Juju Stulbach does have a terrific voice.

But some of the other songs aren't so impressive and the general feel of the album gives a pretty big amateur feel. Sometimes I felt like I was listening to the demo of a buddy that put together a proud product from his garage. Also, the songs are extremely short too - we're talkin' two cuts at 3 minutes, and two cuts at less than 2 minutes! But besides all that, if you dig something new, want something that's pretty happy then you may want to check this out.

On paper it may not seem like the best idea to combine sunny bossa nova and dark sensitive indie pop, but New York's Mosquitos managed to get the combination just right. The follow-up to the band's self-titled debut, Sunshine Barato is another slice of disarmingly simple songs filled with acoustic guitar, simple beats, surf guitar and whirling Wurlitzer organ. Quickly and effectively wedging songs into the subconscious, melodies are pushed to the fore. The complementary song lyrics are poignant little vignettes typically about boy likes girl -- singer Juju Stulbach's whispery vocals often play the femme fatale or swooning maiden to Chris Root's everyman warble, giving thoughtful context to the stories. (There's also lots of astrological, weather and seasonal references - the title means "cheap sunshine.") The last album's "Boombox" made waves as an indie hit as well as music for a couple of national TV ads and a spot on the O.C., but the music here on Sunshine Barato is just as fun and infectious. --Tad Hendrickson

Album Description

The title of Sunshine Barato combines two languages, English and Portuguese. Barato means "cheap," and the album name, taken literally, is a no-strings advertisement of a most appealing sort: Cheap Sunshine! As the title suggests, Mosquitos create a sweet and sensual bilingual mix, happily melting the borders between American and Brazilian cultures, intermingling the sounds and sensibilities of both in their songs. Juju sings new wave-styled pop in English ("Blue Heart"); Chris tries a little bossa nova in Portuguese ("No Fim Do Pais"); the three band members blend tropicalia with psychedelia for a crack-of-dawn beachside sing-along ("Free As Love"). For forty minutes or so, Rio feels like a short subway ride from Manhattan. If only. Sunshine Barato serves as a quick, delicious escape, offering repeated doses of the instant pleasure derived from the perfect two-and-a-half minute pop song. But it also contains a message to take back to our real, often troubled world: there's plenty of cheap sunshine available for all of us to share -- love don't cost a thing.

As an avid MPB, bossa nove, and Brazilian jazz fan I was prepared not to like this, having heard some hype on this band. But after repeated listening, I found myself humming some of the tunes on this album, which is usually a good sign. In a word it's cute. Sugar, sweet, poppy, whatever you want to call it, it's different and it catches your attention and puts a smile on your face. Bossa nova and brazilian jazz it ain't, but who cares when your ears are being tickled? This CD would appeal to listeners who like both indie-pop and world music, not necesarily hard-core MPB or bossa nova fans. In short, a great second effort that should capture some deserved attention and open the door to other great Brazilian sounds. I can't wait to see them live. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars More fun , love and sunshine by the mosquitos.......2004-11-02

The Mosquitos have put fun, love and sunshine to a latin beat, thrown in tones from the 70's, 80's and 90's to make for a delightful mix of many tunes and sounds. This cd will keep you going through the winter, it's delivers as promised, sunshine barato (cheap sunshine) i'll take it anyway I can get it.

5 out of 5 stars Stan's Masterpiece.......2007-02-07

Hardcore fans of Stan Ridgway (all 6 of us) may disagree, but I find this to be at once Stan's most accessible, and also his best album. After the promise of "Call of the West" (his last hurrah with Wall of Voodoo), and "The Big Heat" Stan created his most beautifully melodic album, with "Mosquitos". Stan's songwriting has remained strong over the course of his entire obscure career, but here he simply seems to have found the right musical mix to complement his songwriting. His modest use of synths, harmonica, and yes, even trombones, is inspired, if not typical Stan. I disagree that this album is quintessentially 1980s - it is quintessentially ageless. There are no weak songs on this album - mainly because, finally, Stan's musical talent matched his storytelling mojo.

"The Big Heat" got me interested, and "Mosquitos" sealed the deal. No matter what Stan does from now on (and I hear "Blacktop" is great), he will always have this masterpiece under his belt.

4 out of 5 stars You will never forget.........2005-12-21

I am just googling around and came accross this album, I havnt listened to it for 10 years but reading the wonderful reviews bring back the songs to me like opld friends, reminding of my time away at University in the late 80s, I bought Big Heat on release, and it bridges his WOV work with Mosquitos nicely, Stans way of writing his songs about the ordinary Joe, looking sidewise at the condition of life seeing what others rush past.. the album is almost a concept album, with a selection of characters populating its songs, truck drivers, politicians, priests, and of course, a barman. Mission in Life is as good as everyone says it is, in fact it is perfect. This album demands you listen to it, and the songs and characters stay with you long after the music has stopped. If you can, try and get hold of a little known companion volume, "Fly on the Windscreen" where Stan provides a commentary to a selection of his songs. Wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars One of the great lost albums..........2005-08-26

Many of America's best songwriters never get even a smidge of what they deserve. One of these, Stan Ridgway, sadly wallows in relative obscurity while performers with .00001 of the talent and skill bask in fame and fortune. Why this continually happens remains one of the music industry's greatest unsolvable mysteries. Some of the greatest albums ever recorded just somehow fall between the cracks. "Mosquitos" is one of these great lost albums. But don't look for it on critics' top 100 lists or even "sleepers of the 1980s" lists. The thing just plain disappeared from view.

As many know, Ridgway started out in the late 1970s/early 1980s with the now cult band "Wall Of Voodoo" (no, he didn't write "Mexican Radio" but he sang it brilliantly). He left the band after things started to get crazy (and apparently the record label and manager took them for nearly everything). Following 1986's "The Big Heat", Ridgway, with his drawl somewhere between Micheal Stipe and Neil Young, then made this pop music masterpiece. All albums from the 1980s should have been half this good. And it does sound like a 1980s album. But that's not a bad thing at all because Stan Ridgway made it. Doubtless Geffen groped for hit material with this one. Strangely they didn't get it; because "Mosquitos" contains some of the catchiest and most unforgettable songs of the 1980s. Just try to not sing along with "Goin' Southbound" or "Dogs". You'll fail. Try not to be moved by the seriously tongue-in-cheek "Newspapers" or the deeply poignant "A Mission in Life." You'll fail there, too. No duds mar this album. No "ehh" tracks act as mortar between "acceptable" songs. Everything shines.

Ok, so maybe some explanations exist as to why this album didn't climb the charts like Kong. It starts slow. The intense instrumental "Heat Takes A Walk" leads into the very laid back country-ish "Lonely Town". Many listeners looking for pop/dance hooks may mindlessly finger the "stop" button after hearing these two tracks. Of course after that the pace picks up with a vengeance. And the lyrics. They're neither vapid nor insipid. Some of them contain dark themes. "Goin' Southbound" follows the story of an unfolding crime, complete with death threats and corrupt police. "Dogs" refers to tombstones, death, and manglings (and contains an absolute killer horn riff). The narrator of "Peg and Pete and Me" gets hornswaggled into killing a rich man by his seductive wife. The ending isn't a happy one. "Can't Complain" tells the story of poor Bert. A piano falls on him. Ow. And "Newspapers" lampoons the entire concept of news and the strange dependency we all have on it. Even the album's title suggests a not so rosy view of human nature (just reflect on what mosquitos can represent and juxtapose that with the themes of the songs). All in all not exactly top-40 lyrical material. But all in all a great album from beginning to end that still sounds fresh years later.

Another interesting tid-bit: a then unknown Tori Amos provided backing vocals on "Dogs", "Peg and Pete and Me", and "The Last Honest Man".

Ridgway still writes, tours, and records songs. Many of his albums are as hard to find as 1989's "Mosquitos". Some have even seen re-release, but strangely not "Mosquitos". This album never received the chance it deserved. It remains bizarrely out of print. After hearing it a few times you'll likely bang your head in confusion and say "Why?"

5 out of 5 stars Where have I been?.......2005-06-27

It is June 2005. I'm 44 years old and just got done listening to Stan for the first time (Mosquito 3 times in a row to be more precise). I can not believe what I've been missing. The good thing is I now have Mr. Ridgway's entire career to enjoy as brand new music because it's all new to me. Mission in Life has got to be one of the best songs of any genre ever written and performed by anyone who has ever done anything. Good god.
Everything I've heard so far just moves me. Songwriting at this level is phenominal. Bob Dylan who?
We'll, Stan Ridway is just absolutely pure talent and I have everything by him that I can find on it's way from Amazon.com. All you folks out there who have been listending to Mr. Ridgway all these years, I commend you on your extremely good taste in music. Glad to be a part of the brotherhood. I just can't get over this man's talent. Wow.

5 out of 5 stars "Mission in Life", alone, is worth the price of admission........2002-01-24

I have had this cd for years and it is always a pleasure to revisit. I'm not going to grab the cd and start reviewing song by song. I am not writing this from the context of all the prior reviews; just straight from the hip. Maybe I'll grab the cd one day and bang out a "real" review.

Like I suppose is true for some others who have grown to be ardent Stan fans, I discovered this cd by accident - 12 years ago in my case. Sure I had heard of Wall of Voodoo and I owned "Call of the West". "COTW" is lot of fun and also highly recommended -4 stars would be my score, with Mosquitos scoring 5. Maybe because the music on Mosquitos seems a bit more timeless and thoughtful, while Wall of Voodoo is more of that early 80's moment - great moment though it was.

I thought this was MY "find", a gem that I wanted to share with others, a gem I wasn't hearing on the radio.

Fortunately, a good many people felt the same way. The album got a lot of good exposure from positive critical acclaim and from the strong word of mouth from those who owned this masterpiece. Some of the more adventurous radio stations even played it.

Stan's work here is both dark and uplifting; funny and bittersweet. I would compare it to a smart, witty drama - the kind that isn't for everyone in the way a "Memento", "Local Hero" or a Woody Allen, Robert Altman or David Lynch movie can be. Stan's music and this cd should be heard by more people. It is accessible. And it is smart. Liken it to an adult film (not THAT kind) such as Gosford Park versus the vacuous "popular" drivel of Pearl Harbor/Armageddon-type movies. Cinema is an apt metaphor for songs/stories from Stan whose music/lyrics are oft cited as cinematic/noirish. Though, staying on this film tack, Stan's music might be better characterized cinematically as Gosford Park/Altman-type sensibility crossed with Repo Man crossed with a bit of Local Hero mixed in with a bit of Groucho Marx. Film examples aside (again Stan's music brings me to analogies related to film for some reason - listen to Mosquitos and you'll hear why), Stan Ridgway's music is not as well known because it is a bit deeper, a bit smarter than lowest-common-denominator. What a musical oasis provided as it was released during the Motley Crue/Poison/Ratt era of rock music.

So what if "everyone" has not discovered the unique brilliance of Stan Ridgway and what I, and many others, consider his masterpiece, "Mosquitos"; it doesn't mean YOU can't!

If you like Tom Waitts, John Prine, Springsteen, Van Morrison, Joe Strummer, Lyle Lovett, Pete Townshend, Bob Dylan and the like, then add this to your music collection and enjoy. Mosquitos is one of the best albums of the 80's and still sounds great today. Listen and you will hear why it is appropriate to include this Stan Ridgway work with the stellar group of musicians/songwriters mentioned above. Those artists are vital and so is the music of Stan Ridgway.

Stan Ridgeway has a way of telling short stories in song. I believe this was his first solo album after being with Wall of Voodoo for umpteen years.

The song "Southbound" was very popular on LA's KROQ radio when it was released.

If you like Stan Ridgeway's unique music, this is a must have.

Geremia, who learned to play in the early 60s sitting at the feet of the great "rediscovered" bluesmen, is renowned for coming up with the rarest and most obscure gems in the blues repertoire (this CD includes compositions by Bumble Bee Slim, Peetie Wheatstraw, Blind Blake, the mysterious George Carter, Jim Jackson, Jim Foster [Sam Collins], Jesse Thomas, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Charlie Patton, Mississippi John Hurt, Big Bill Broonzy, Blind John Davis, Scrapper Blackwell, Blind Willie McTell, Pink Anderson and the late Dave Van Ronk). A superb recording.

4 out of 5 stars Love, Murder and Right Wing Politics.......2005-03-09

Slide twelve-string blues is just something you have to hear to believe and Paul Geremia aces it. The title cut 'Meet me in the bottom' alone is worth the price of the CD. There's nothing else like it and I would give it six stars but for the "New Bully of the Town' cut which is just a right wing, anti-government pro-Waco wacko track. The music is fine, mind you, but the politics is offensive, to me, at least. But overall, a great CD, and a great addition to any collection of acoustic blues' modern masters.

5 out of 5 stars Should win best blues album of the year.......2004-07-08

First off, I actually met and talked Paul Geremia, and know him through my guitar teacher. Plus I saw him recienty in consert. He was really excited about this new album, and played most of the songs that were on it. So I kind of knew what to expect. This album is blues purists and fans alike. I hope this wins best blues album of the year. Paul is probably the best acoustic blues musician alive today. What more can I say, get it

5 out of 5 stars Great Acoustic Blues!.......2004-05-26

If you like the old style acoustic blues, this is the man. Geremia plays acoustic 6 & 12 string guitar (and if I remember correctly a piano tune or two) along with his blues harp. Most songs are Geremia solo, but he has an occasional sideman joining him. He is an excellent guitarist and has a great voice for the blues!

After years of purchasing books and CDs from amazon, I've never had the urge to write a review until hearing this guy. Great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Settle down for some sweet surf music, no, wait, get UP!!!.......2005-12-12

I read a review that just could not say enough good things about the smooth surf these nasty mosquitos produce. So, I finally got myself a copy and I can only concur with those who rave. At times I miss some vocal sound, but just sit back and let them massage your mind, or get up and move to the groove. Be ready to be surprised at every turn. I highly recommend this CD to all surf lovers and others with good taste.
