Editorial Reviews
This record was first heard on the 2002 soundtrack 'Donnie Darko' & this release has been much awaited since then. Roland Orzabel who wrote 'Mad World' & had a hit with it in 'Tears For Fears' has said that this version is much better than the original. The vocals by Gary Jules compliment the haunting piano riffs beautifully & proves why it is a clear favorite on the soundtrack. The title track is backed with 'No Poetry' (from Jules' 2001 album 'Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets') & 'Mad World' (Alternative Version from 'Donnie Darko' Soundtrack). Sanctuary. 2003.

just wanted "mad world".......2007-01-09
Gary Jules' remake of Mad World is superb!.......2007-01-06
Liked only one cut.......2007-01-04
Atmospheric and all-around cool........2006-06-05
Andrews uses many bizarre non-musical instruments and female vocals to great effect, and creates an ambient, sad world that works regardless of your having seen the film.
His song "Mad World" is one of the saddest and most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
The disk isn't very long--just a little over thirty-seven minutes as I recall. But definitely recommended.

bestest album ever.......2007-07-05
Great Music.......2006-11-03
Much more than "Highway".......2006-09-30
The second cut "Mad, Mad, World" immediately takes you to bit of a darker place, a bit reminiscent of Henley's "Dirty Laundry," but holds its own well. The music keeps driving forward, Cochrane knows a hook when he here's one and each song has a fairly strong beat to hang his words on. Lyrically he covers the basic points; relationships and life's choices, but he stays more towards the positive side which is a nice switch from the self-pity you often find in the singer-songwriter genre. While not entirely original sounding (When "Sinking like a Sunset" opens you immediately think Bruce Hornsby and there are other examples. There is a definite Bryan Adams feel here as well) his own vocal style and the infectious melodies support a continued listen. I'm glad "Life is Highway" led me to this and I found it was very much worth a purchase.
Tom Cochrane - Mad Mad World.......2005-08-18
This whole album is great.......2005-04-30
Take "Sinking Like a Sunset", where Tom showcases his lower vocal range to a cool beat. "Everything Comes Around" has a somewhat alternative vibe to it with its guitar chord structure, but in a good way....I loved the sound of this song before I ever really embraced anything that could be considered "alternative". I also love the somewhat slower vibe of such tracks as "The Secret is to Know When to Stop" and "Emotional Truth", while the title track and "Brave and Crazy" are good surefire rockers. "No Regrets" is another good pop-rocker that I remember briefly hearing on radio as a follow-up to the well-known monster hit.
A lot of good melodic pop/rock has come from Canada. Many of my generation are familiar with the Bryan Adams' and Loverboys of the world, and I also truly embrace certain obscure melodic rock acts from Canada such as Harem Scarem. This album from Tom Cochrane is another Canadian pop/rock gem...and for more reasons than the classic "Life is a Highway". Strong, enjoyable album from beginning to end.

The Irish Tenors' fourth album sees the trio of Anthony Kearns, Ronan Tynan, and Finbar Wright paying a sentimental musical tribute to Ellis Island, the hallowed landmark that met the majority of immigrants entering the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Needless to say, the Tenors' repertoire this time around is full of reflective ballads of love, loss, and homesickness, including the original "Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears" that opens this disc. Throughout this studio recording, the Irish Tenors are in fine form and backed by a soft-hued orchestra that never interferes with their soaring vocals. Traditional tunes include "My Wild Irish Rose," "How Are Things in Glocca Mora," and, of course, "Danny Boy" (the last sung by all three tenors, with refreshingly simple solo piano accompaniment). Thankfully, the threesome didn't forget that the immigrants had fun, too, as evidenced by some lighthearted fare; "The Courtin' Medley" features the Tenors at their most upbeat and comical. Ellis Island is a moving aural portrait of the struggles and triumphs of the Irish émigrés and a must-have for fans of the threesome. Newcomers may enjoy the Tenors' debut disc even more, as the earlier live album is a slightly more upbeat and spirited affair. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:
Three Cheers for the Irish!!!.......2007-05-30
Mora to end all, and Anthony Kearns sings murderously difficult versions
of Macushla and The Croppy Boy like an angel. And their Courtin' and Irish
Medleys, and their "Nation Once Again" trios are simply glorious glees.
With the benefit of a grand theme, this is perhaps the best, and best balanced, of all their programs.
Ellis Island song brings tears to my eyes.......2006-03-17
How Are Things In Glocca Morra?.......2004-04-16
This CD has a bit more of an Irish American theme as "Isle Of Hope, Isle Of Tears" and "God Bless America" illustrate. Interspersed among these tunes are traditional Irish tunes such as "Macushla" and "Croppy Boy", along with newer songs, such as "The Green Fields Of France" and "How are Things In Glocca Morra?"
The singing is excellent, the words understandable. I appreciate the inclusion the lyrics of the songs contained on the insert of the cover. These are songs you will want to learn, whose stories you will want to research. I have. Listen again and again!

"What if Marco Polo had owned tape recorder?" This intriguing concept is raised in the liner notes to this impressive two-CD set, which wanders along ancient Asian trade routes known as the Silk Road. The first disc, Masters & Traditions, deals with formal styles performed by and for sophisticated connoisseurs. Meanwhile, the music on Minstrels and Lovers is played by amateurs who are part of daily life and thus reach a wider audience. The imaginary caravan passes through Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, and Afghanistan, encountering nomads, mystics, and bards along the way. The instruments are scratchy, pungent, and/or serene, while the singers weave a potent spell out of a millennium's worth of slow-changing rural and urban vistas. In the opening essay, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the project's artistic director, pleads for intercultural communication and empathy. This compilation provides an exotic, brave, entertaining first step in that direction. --Christina RodenAlbum Description
What if Marco Polo had owned a tape recorder? And what if his epic travels along the Silk Road had taken place not at the end of the 13th century, but at the beginning of the 21st? Far-fetched conjectures to be sure, but our compilation The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan offers a glimpse of the rich musical life that an intrepid and curious traveler like Marco Polo might find in the lands of the Silk Road today.Customer Reviews:

Surprisingly good!.......2006-11-18
I must admit that I am pleasantly surprised by this album. When I first listened to it, I laughed at nearly every song - not because they were bad, but simply because hearing string renditions of some of my favorite songs made me feel like I was meeting old friends again. The songs were different from when I first heard them years ago, but I could still recognize them, and it was really, really good to hear them.
Most of the songs are well done. I simply love "Betterman", "Daughter", "Elderly Woman", "Jeremy", "Rearviewmirror", "Corduroy" and "Evenflow". To me these are beautifully done, and seem to be poignant tributes to their namesakes. "Dissident", "Alive", "Once", and "Last Exit" are fair, and I think mainly that they don't translate that well to a string arrangement. "Go" is an insteresting choice for strings, and I'm just not convinced that it works. It's hard to capture the power of that song with a string quartet! "Given to Fly" is a disappointment, as it seems to have lost most of the original song's resonant melodies (you would assume they would be even more prevalent when arranged on strings). Finally, I was very disappointed by "Release". When I saw it on the track listing, it was the one PJ song that I was sure would be beautiful in a string arrangement. Much of the original song's ambient sound has been lost, replaced instead by individual string melodies that don't seem to even fit together.
As a whole, this album is pleasant to listen to, and I'll definitely listen to it when I need to mellow out. I'm also a classical music fan, and I can easily see this album working its way into my rotation of classical favorites. If you're a PJ fan and aren't allergic to classical music, this album is definitely worth having. If you're a PJ purist who finds classical music boring, you'll likely think this album deadens the power and verve of the songs you've come to know and love.

Any of Ernest Gold's soundtracks are worth having if you like his music. Judgement at Nuremburg is a reprint of the original soundtrack and is now available. Other Ernest Gold soundtracks that I have heard include Exodus (with its famous theme music that did make radio play in its time), Ship of Fools, and On the Beach, an early cold war doomsday classic. By the way, with the exception of Exodus, the other films mentioned here were all directed by Stanley Kramer. Another collaboration between these two men was The Secret of Santa Vittoria, a WWII comedy/drama. Get your Ernest Gold now before it goes out of print.

Hauntingly beautiful.......2007-03-31
One of the readers is right, it is much better than the Tears For Fears version (a really great group, by the way). I actually thought Gary Jules version was the original, and made back some period in the 60's; it has that era's same musical quality (like Jefferson Airplane's "Ask Alice").
That's Where I Heard It.......2006-03-11
I heard this song on the radio this morning and have been going crazy trying to figure out where I heard it. I have seen Donnie Darko--but that was a few years ago. So, I knew it wasn't there....now I remember seeing it on Cold Case not too long ago. I can remember that during that part of the episode, I was mesmerized by it. It was probably one of the best Cold Case episodes I've ever watched because of that song--although I cannot remember what was happening at the time besides the fact that it was at the end after the case had been solved...someone help me here?!? (similar impact on me as that of an episode of Miami Vice that I remember to this day when Brothers in Arms was playing while they uncovered a dead body behind a walll!!)
Mad World is one of the most beautiful AND haunting songs I've ever heard!! For those people who really LOVE music and love the emotions it stirs in you...listen to it...you can't help but be moved. I can't wait to get a copy!!
