5 out of 5 stars The creativity of Gizmodgery is unmatched.......2006-12-17

I'm surprised it took me so long to find out about this incredible album; a CD as uniquely creative and catchy as Gizmodgery should have been instantly well-acclaimed, yet this album from Self seems to be somewhat uncommon and rare for some reason. I doubt any other band could have done a better job than Self at creating nifty beats and songs using solely sounds from toy instruments and the vocalist, and the whole concept of this CD is so cool that I found myself hooked and fascinated by the songs for every second of the album. Almost every song is as good as the next; the only slightly weak songs were maybe "Ordinaire" and "Ilovetoloveyourlovemylove", which still were somewhat enjoyable nonetheless. I would have thought Gizmodgery would be a bit more well-known than it is in the U.S. since it uses a style that is both innovative and amazingly fun to listen to, although I do believe I've definitely heard the song "Pattycake" off this album on my local alternative station a number of times; hopefully this means at least a few people are aware of this CD since it could use all the publicity it can get. I would especially recommend the track "Chameleon" off this album, which by far uses the most skillful and awesome samples of the whole CD and has an impossibly catchy chorus that goes "you can't tell you can't tell me no" overtop of a noisy beat, distorted toy drum kit noises, and what sounds like a toy whistle. The song begins with an electronic voice going "check it out" that is also kind of cool, and with all those factors combined together I'd have to say that "Chameleon" is currently my all-time favorite song at least for today. I have completely never encountered an album that used such a vividly clever assortment of instruments as can be heard on Gizmodgery; everything about this album simply blew me away. Don't take my word for it, though; hear this unbelievable album for yourself (once you can find it at a reasonable price). It would be cruel to not rate this five stars. P.S. I haven't heard the bonus track that this import seems to have, but I'm sure it's up to par with the rest of the songs on here.

5 out of 5 stars Saw their toy show in Murfreesboro.......2006-07-14

Luckily, I had a friend in Nashville at the time that Gizmodgery came out. I went to visit on a weekend when Self was performing a toy show in Murfreesboro. Best show I've ever been to. I could swear the floor was going to go out from underneath everyone jumping up and down. Love the album. Sorry to see that it is so expensive now. I think I paid $8 for mine new back then.

5 out of 5 stars Genius, But Check Out Their Other CDs!.......2005-12-05

I originally started listening to and buying Self CDs only because I heard Gizmodgery at a friend's house and fell in love with the catchy-pop riffs. When I found out the entire CD was recorded with kids toys, I had to have it, despite the steep price tag!

However, if you're not willing to dive in and shell out the cash to purchase Gizmodgery right away I highly reccomend that you listen to some of their other music. All of their songs are lyrically creative and witty, the music mostly indie pop with a few songs that are completely opposite of pop and hauntingly beautiful. If "Breakfast With Girls" or "Subliminal Plastic Motives" hook you in, "Gizmodgery" will most definitely be a wise musical investment that you'll listen to over and over without wear.

5 out of 5 stars SELF MASTERY........2005-03-12

For production value (or should i say genius?) MATT MAHAFFEY cannot possibly be outdone. This album was recorded solely with TOY INSTRUMENTS...thing is you shouldnt be fooled. As childish as it HAS to be, this is no amateur, silly, indie-rock record. Nor is it some low grade attempt to be arty or avante garde. Which the concept might lead you to expect. AND THAT IS WHAT MAKES IT STAND OUT AS A CUT ABOVE. This is top-notch brilliant pop music made with toys!!? And as usual SELF is relentlessly versatile and creative with composition.Once again showing off their ability to flow in and out of different musical styles with mastery. A fine example of this point occurs with the cover of "What a Fool Believes" by the Doobie Brothers. Just in case this isnt sinking, let me say this again. We're talking "What a Fool Believes " played on toy instuments!!!??? What's most impressive is all of the TOYS on the album were recorded w/out the help of a sample machine yet the production sounds so good you cannot fathom how it was done.
Did I mention that this isnt even their best record?

4 out of 5 stars definitley worth your while.......2005-02-07

I am a newly found SELF fan and this cd blows me away every time I hear it. It's incredible how every song is done with toy instruments. It makes me wonder why noone has ever thought of it before. It is a must-have and a great investment for anyone who appreciates good music.

5 out of 5 stars A landmark in modern music........2004-03-13

Befitting a millenial album, Gizmodgery serves as a landmark in popular music as well as SELF's own evolution. Matt Mahaffey's concept album employs children's toys -- think Fisher Price -- as the sole musical accomaniment to the vocal tracks.

Though the idea sounds silly, the result of SELF's labor is nothing short of splendid.

Every song stands on its own as a pop masterpiece, and with tracks that are as much fun as "Trunk Fulla Amps" or "Pattycake," it's no surprise that Gizmodgery is generally the most highly regarded of SELF's releases.

Gizmodgery is the fourth and newest SELF album, and exhibits the most musical finesse and unique style of all the albums. Though the previous three are all amazing in their own ways, Gizmodgery rises above its comparable competitors as one of the greatest albums of the 21st century.

5 out of 5 stars SImply delightful.......2004-02-23

Self's music has always been catchy. And if you don't think he's a creative pop/kitsch genius, consider the expedia jingle. You know it, and there's a reason you know it. It's creator, Matt Mahaffey, is the king of catchy. If you're intimidated by this disc's hefty price tag and aren't familiar with Matt's work, check out Subliminal Plastic Motives or Breakfast With Girls (or the free mp3 albums he has released over the past few years that you have to dig around the internet for). But once you've heard those and have fallen in love with them, find a way to GET THIS ALBUM. This disc has been a gem in my collection since I bought it. I played songs numerous times on my radio show to the delight of my listeners, bring it out at parties, and blow people's minds when I tell them all the music is made with toys. The lyrics are not brilliant by any means, but the music... Get the cd and you will understand.

5 out of 5 stars Stunned!.......2003-11-06

If you havent heard SELF, GO BUY THEIR ALBUM! It is amazing that this cd along with "Breakfast with Girls" and "Subliminal Plastic Motives" is available on this website. They are almost impossible to find! However, while Gizmodgery is an extremely good cd, (made entirely by toys, yes, freakin toys like playschool stuff), im intimidated to pay the 40.00 for it. My best friend let me listen to this cd, and i couldnt put it down. Breakfast with Girls, Gizmodgery, Subliminal Plastic Motives, and The Half-Baked Serenade are all of SELF's albums. My personal fav. is Gizmodgery followed by Half-Baked as a close second. I was shocked when i heard this band play, and even more shocked that something this good could come from my homestate of Tennessee! If you havent heard this band, you owe it to yourself to listen to these extraordinarily talented musicians. You wont regret it in the least. I love this band, and hope that they release another album soon.

2 out of 5 stars A good gimmick, but a gimmick nonetheless.......2003-03-30

This album was created entirely with toy instruments, from plastic guitars to Speak'n'Spells, so it's an accomplishment of sorts. Unfortunately the songwriting of Self mainman Matt Mahaffey is still too cute by half, with each song pinballing between too many ideas like case studies in the debilitating effects of Attention Deficit Disorder. Only "Trunk Fulla Amps" comes close to being a fully realized song, and all the slick studio trickery eventually undercuts the impact of the toy instrument conceit. By the time Mahaffey settles in to the world's most annoying version of the Doobie Brothers' most annoying song ("What a Fool Believes") the accomplishment of Gizmodgery has devolved into mere gimmickry.
