Nothing in their debut could really have prepared fans for the sonic assault the Velvets unleashed in White Light/White Heat. Freed from Andy Warhol's patronage (and Nico's vocals), Lou Reed and company strip production values to a minimum and turn out a primitive rock & roll masterpiece: everything on this record sounds distorted and abrasive. Depending on how you feel about these sorts of things, this makes it either their best or their worst record. Of course, underneath it all are some of Reed's greatest songs, from the title track to the wistful "Here She Comes Now." It all culminates on side 2 with the raucously joyous "I Heard Her Call My Name" ("And then my mind split open," Reed sings, and his guitar lets you know just about how that would feel) and the epic "Sister Ray"--10 minutes of transcendent, pounding fuzz as Reed searches for his "mainline." --Percy Keegan

5 out of 5 stars Seriously Wonderful and Not Half as Scary as Some Would Suggest. .......2007-05-23

Most of the comments I've read about the Velvets on this site are surprisingly smart and well done, so check 'em out, particularly with reference to this album of the Velvet's, but I wanted to add a few things.

When I first listened to this record about 16 years ago (at the age of 16) it freaked me out and I put it aside in favor of Loaded and ESPECIALLY the s/t record (their best, by far). Those records are comforting and oddly familiar (even on the first listen)... they're just plain brilliant and they are pretty easy to dig, and to get. But over the years I've come back to WL/WH again and again and it honestly keeps getting better and better and better.

This is the most interesting and the most challenging record in the Velvet's catalog (not Lou Reed's--see Metal Machine Music) and for that reason I beseech you (if you have any interest in music that colors outside of the lines) to really listen to this, hard. It's not a perfect record, not sure it's even a "masterpiece", but it's remarkably f#&@%^%G cool and it's fun to get lost in. I think of it as a document regarding a particular time in American musical history, one that gets ever more relevant as bands like Comets on Fire, Wolf Eyes, The Warlocks and so on and so on, head off deeper into the forest that the Velvets, I'd argue, seeded.

And honestly, The Gift alone makes this record worthwhile--that you get Sister Ray and Lady Godiva's Operation as well makes it a no-brainer.

5 out of 5 stars Violent, bitter, and brilliant........2007-05-23

Recorded in 1967 (and released early the next year), while Lou Reed and John Cale were constantly at each other's throats, White Light/White Heat is a loud, angry, uncompromising record, full of anti-social dismay and cathartic rage. And since this is a Velvets album, its also sarcastic, smart, drug-addled, and brilliant. If you're here after being floored by the group's astounding debut, be warned: this is a much less accessable, much more hostile album than its predecessor. Where the debut used feedback and unusual song structures to augment what were essentially offbeat pop songs, White Light/White Heat seeks noise as an end in itself- the songs brutal whirlwinds of of distortion and dissonance, messes of pure volume and screaming amplifiers. This stuff makes heavy metal sound like "Ring Around the Rosy." Needless to say, you probably won't like it the first time you hear it. When I bought this on CD (way back when I was all of sixteen years old), my dad actually threw it out the window during the car ride home. It's not the most accessable thing around. But give it a few more listens and you'll discover that the Velvets rarely make artless noise: these songs are hotbeds of raw, negative emotion and boundry-pushing experimentation. They bristle with nervous energy and uncontrolled fury. It really is something that should be heard.

The title track and and "I Heard Her Call My Name" are hypercative, rugged, and speedy (and when I say "speed," think "amphetamene"), racing along on rockin' rhythm sections and stinging lead guitar lines. The lyrics to the former are pure sleaze-obsessed Lou Reed-isms, full of references to shooting up and spending time with seedy characters, while the latter (the one that made my dad throw out the CD, by the way. If only he'd made it to the track after that!) is a shuddering, broken-down blues rocker with instrumental breaks that approximat pure white noise. "The Gift" is a two-headed monster: It consists of John Cale reading an increasingly bizarre (and darkly funny) short story in one stereo channel, while the band pounds out a hypnotic, greasy instrumental jam in the other, full of pinwheeling guitar solos and leering rhythms. Equally unhinged is "Lady Godiva's Operation," which starts out as a somewhat pretty (but undeniably odd) surrealist ballad, but soon transmogrifies into a quiet freakout, complete with startling lyrical interruptions and jabs of nasty guitar. The short, sweet, "Here She Comes Now" is the closest thing on the album to legitimatly beautiful song, complete with haunting vocal harmonies, delicate verses, and ethereal, playful guitar lines. It's proof that Reed could write a gorgeous song when he wanted to (for further evidence of that, see their third album).

And then there's "Sister Ray." To this day, there really are few experiences in this world that are as twistedly wonderful as "Sister Ray." It's the epitome of difficult brilliance: at over seventeen minutes in length, the track is a monster, an endless tornado of tooth-gnashing keybords, shattered guitar chords, and jurassic rhythms. It may not be easy to listen to, but get used to it, and you'll discover that its a masterpiece of ecstatically enraged white noise shattered-mirror psychedelia, a sociopathic rock 'n' roll classic that'll stay with you for the rest of your life. Whenever you're in a bad mood, rank it up. It's better than antidepressents.

White Light/White Heat may be a difficult album to appreciate, but don't give up: If its harshly noisy nature turns you off the first time around, give it a few more listens. You just might discover one of your favorite rock albums ever.

5 out of 5 stars An Intro to the Art of Noise-making.......2007-04-18

The VU is a hipster dream band. Now it has become fashionable to simply adore the Velvet Underground, especially the debut (yeah the one with the banana). I do not doubt how important the VU's debut was but now I rarely seem to listen to it. It seems the VU has become a name-dropping device for pseudo-artsy hipster kiddies while sporting his/her new Warhol made-in-China banana peel shoulder bag. However, true lovers of the VU will always turn to the still little-known soundscape. This album- White Light/White Heat- distilled the VU to its pure core (aka without the annoying Warhol and odd Nico) with John Cale and Lou Reed.

There will always be a fight over which member of the VU was the most important but this noise masterpiece seemed to be guided by the genius of John Cale with his avant-garde inclinations and willingness to challenge the listener's perception of music. Cale would later make far more tuneful, pretty, and (better?) recordings such as his stunning Paris 1919 album but this is the one and only White Light/ White Heat.

As for Lou Reed, well, he is being plain ole Lou Reed. He plays a nasty guitar on "I Heard Her Call My Name". The best VU album that displays his folky pop talents would be the album after White Light/White Heat- the self titled album.

If you like this album get Wire's Chairs Missing, Sonic Youth's EVOL, My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, PiL's Metal Box, and (if you want to go all the way with this noisy stuff...) Fripp and Eno's No Pussyfooting.

This album will scare all the poseurs away.

4 out of 5 stars Even today, one of the weirdest records ever made.......2007-02-05

The Velvet Underground were always something different and special. The first album, even by today's standards, was pretty innovative and artistic, and the second album is the more shocking and more avant-garde of the two. It's also the least digestible VU album, as it's not as catchy as "Loaded," melodic as the self-titled record, or as song-for-song standout-ish as the debut. Even today, this record is menacing and scary, and still pretty unique. It may take some time for you to appreciate, as it is certainly an acquired taste.

The tracks get even more detailed into drugs, particularly the likes of cocaine, in the first track. That's one of the greatest songs on this album, and while there's six songs, there is so much that's accomplished on here. I wish John Cale had sung on more VU songs. I thought he was a great vocalist, particularly on "Lady Godiva's Operation." It is brilliant and worth owning "White Light" for this alone. It is such a beautiful song.

Although, on the other side of the spectrum is the infamous seventeen-minute jam-out track "Sister Ray," which is kinda scary, and totally dark and sinister. This track can be seen as one that paved the way for goth and noise rock. It is actually pretty well done and even at its incredibly long length, I think it's just fine. Well performed.

As for the other three songs, they're a little bit interesting, even if not as noteworthy. The only one I'm not a really big fan of out of those is "The Gift," which goes the entire time through a poetic spoken word verses. I guess it's not bad, but not my type of thing.

This record is interesting, and if you're in for it, I totally would suggest getting this sophomore album from the Velvet Underground.

5 out of 5 stars At least they cared enough to write..........2007-01-10

White Light/White Heat is what happens when a group of talented and original artists are given free reign to create whatever they want in an atmosphere that encourages experimentation. I have a massive music collection covering everything from traditional Egyptian folk music to gangsta rap, and I have never encountered another album like this one. It can be so rocking and groovy at times, yet so chaotic and dense at others. It is also one of the few albums I own that I never find boring.

I'm not going to break the album down song-by-song because there is already plenty of that here on Amazon. I will simply say that this album is not easy listening. It is loud, chaotic, wild, rough, raw, and sometimes just downright weird. Nonetheless, it is among my favorite albums ever. (I usually prefer much more mainstream fare.) It features what has got to be one of the earliest recorded versions of what would eventually become known as punk, "I Heard Her Call My Name." It also features one of the craziest and hardest rocking songs I know of in the exhausting "Sister Ray." Heck, I'd be willing to bet even a lot of the people who say they don't like this song in other reviews still think the first five minutes of "Sister Ray" are killer. And I do want to defend "The Gift." This is my favorite song on the album and among my favorite Velvet Underground songs period. I don't think I could ever get sick of the way John Cale reads the story or the jam the band plays in the other channel.

This is not an album for casual music fans, or even casual fans of the Velvet Underground. I have a lot of friends who love music and cannot stand anything on this album after the first track. But if you are open-minded and willing to throw out your previous ideas about what a rock album can and should be, then White Light/White Heat could prove to be one of those rare albums that you enjoy more with each successive listen, just as it is for me. Highly, highly recommended... but not to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Back To Their Roots..........2007-03-30

While not completely departing from the rockabilly sound of their previous three albums, "White Light, White Heat, White Trash" is definitely a return to the band's punk rock roots. This album is the closest Social Distortion has come to releasing another pure "punk rock" album since "mommy's little monster". Lyrically, this album has a much more angry and bleak outlook on the world than what was presented in the previous three albums.

This album, along with "Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell" stand as the best two complete albums that Social Distortion have ever released. It is another album that is easy to listen to in its entirety. In my opinion, these are the real highlights of the album...

-Dear Lover
-Don't Drag Me Down
-I Was Wrong
-Through These Eyes
-When The Angels Sing
-Down Here With The Rest of Us
-Under My Thumb

5 out of 5 stars SD AT ITS BEST.......2007-01-03

"White light..." is undoubtlessly the climax of Mike Ness' search for a definitive punk-hearted rock style. Songs like "I was wrong" or "Don't drag me down" deserve to be in every anthology of the finest punk ever played by an american band.

5 out of 5 stars Hard Driving Rage !.......2006-06-09

Probably my favorite album from this incredible band. Heck, all of their albums are great, I cannot really think of another band with the consistency as Mike Ness and the boys. What I like so much about this album is how hard it is. This album kicks off with a rockin' # and just keeps driving the pace and sound up up up. Mike Ness, you freaking rule!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Record Ever Made.......2006-05-03

I've been listening to rock and roll and other popular music since 1963. My tastes run from Hank Williams to Chevelle, from Donovan to Type O Negative, from Dinah Washington to Catherine Wheel. I rarely use words like "the best" because "the best" tends to vary over time and with moods - there is just so much good music out there. This recording, however, over the 10 years since its release, has proven itself over time. Ness and Co. set out with a mission: to make a great "punk rock" album. I don't think they did that at all, this isn't even "punk rock" to my ears. What they made is simply The Greatest Record of All Time. It is flawless in its writing, its performance, and its production. I will be forever grateful to them for making it.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely gorgeous agony.......2005-10-10

Being a long time Social D fan, I greatly anticipated the release of White Heat... Mike Ness and co. had gone through some line-up changes and in the process acquired "Master of the Skins" and former Danzig drummer, Chuck Biscuits. This new arrival, while he had never been a core writer or personality in any previous band, made his presence more than known on this cd. The tempo and drumming, put to sadistic use in this collection perfectly matched the atmosphere that Ness created when he wrote the songs. Some may say that this cd is a bit depressing. Those people would be right but Ness's pain, loneliness, and frustration is beautiful to listen to unfold. In point of fact, this cd reminded me of why I love music so much. It allows you to explore the darker side of yourself and not to be afraid of it. Kind of scary, huh?
When your finished listening to the entire cd from start to finish, and I advise you to do so, you will feel spent, exhilerated and humming some of the songs all day. Magnificent, heartfelt writing coupled with virtuoso musicianship and recording standards of the highest caliber should result in this cd becoming a pillar in everyone's music library. Most highly recomended!!

4 out of 5 stars Better Than Expected.......2007-05-01

I have always been a major Byrds fan and yet I had never really explored Gene Clark as a solo artist. Fortunately this was my first Gene Clark solo record purchase. Over half the songs are really great. I really don't think that he is like anyone else. Yes, you can hear the Dylan influence slightly but he has a unique voice and the knack for weird chord combinations that lend a mood to the music. I personally loved Gene's earliest stuff before he felt he had to be a "poet". Even on White Light it seems that he tries a little too hard at times and he misses the mark that could have been hit with simplicity. It is definitely worth the money to buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Solo Byrdman!.......2007-01-19

Wow! All this time I thought that Gene was just the tambourine bashing front man for the original Byrds! So this is where the Eagles learned to fly.............buy it, read the notes, enjoy!Kurt.

5 out of 5 stars "More like a dream than reality" is dead-on.......2006-12-29

It really is more like a dream than reality that Gene Clark could make an album like White Light then all but disappear from the annals of American pop music history without ever achieving mainstream success and recognition. This record is my first non-Byrds introduction to Gene Clark (excepting a great cover of "Spanish Guitar" by Plainsong). Let me tell you, it's a purchase I'm glad I made and I can't wait to pick up more of his music (the best, from what I hear, are Dillard and Clark, Roadmaster, and No Other).

White Light, in spite of its comparisons to Neil Young, Dylan, etc. surprised me--it's a quite laid-back affair. At its heart it's an acoustic record--the lead electric guitar is clean and the songs are always driven by the acoustic rhythm guitar and the percussion is generally not the standard in-your-face rock kit drumming that usually accompanies folk rock. Admittedly, the album's overall mood failed to grab my on first listen. However, this isn't dime store pop--the merits of Gene Clark and White Light aren't in throwaway hooks that get old after one listen.

Here's what makes the album classic for me: Clark's got a great voice. It's not derivatively Dylan-esque like a lot of similar artists of the day. Clark sings simply and evocatively, channeling the emotions of his songs in a really compelling way. The songwriting is great--excellent, somewhat melancholy lyrics that are accessible but ambiguous enough to retain a bit of mystery. Last, the arrangements are great. The lead guitar may not be hardcore, but most every song has a great lead line (often slide guitar) that really accompanies the mood of the songs and is actually pretty gnarly from time to time (i.e. the opening line on "The Virgin" and the melodic counterpoint on "One in a Hundred"). Despite the album's overall mellow vibe, there's actually some pretty rocking numbers, like "White Light" and "1975," in which the drums really kick in and the country bass starts to accent the beat in a harder way. The only weakness here, in my opinions are the keyboards. They're pretty much buried in the mix on most of the songs, making them less of a part of the band and more of a support for the mood. I guess they do add to the record, but I wonder what they could have contributed if used in a more melody-oriented position.

Some highlights for me are the desolate solo guitar and voice on "With Tomorrow," the immediately accessible and haunting "Because of You," and the cover of "Tears of Rage." Although it doesn't obviate Richard Manuel's soulful, definitive take from Music From Big Pink, it's definitely well-chosen and a rocking reinterpretation that really works. Really, though, all the songs on here are great and essential. I can't pick out a track (bonus tracks excepted) that doesn't contain meaningful lyrics, memorable musical moments, and characteristics that don't set it apart from the others. I highly recommend White Light to fans of Dylan, Young, the Byrds, folk, folk rock etc., and also to fans of similar newer music. Congratulations on finding one of the 70's best-kept musical secrets--I hope you take the opportunity to capitalize on your discovery!

3 out of 5 stars Another Gene Clark "Hit Album".......2006-08-27

Gene Clark has got to be the most under rated rock and roll star with the largest selection of supurb albums that flopped.

4 out of 5 stars A Gene Gem.......2006-04-12

Gene Clark was a superb, terribly underrated American songster, and this is as good as any instance of his other, somewhat more well-known work. The only songs or performances to compare to these are on "The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard and Clark." On this still more personally styled collection of songs, Gene Clark explored the quests of his generation, ("The Virgin") ... Or examined his own life's work as an artist and creator, as in a piece of particular beauty,"Spanish Guitar" -the only song I've ever heard Bob Dylan say he wished he had written. Not even collaborators like Robbie Robertson ever received such praise from Bob. As always, Gene's romanticism ("With Tomorow") and full-hearted writing are moving throughout. Gene was an American treasure, and it's a shame that he wasn't better recognized here during his life. This is one prime example of his work - sweet and understated.

Album Description

Dakini Lounge marks Indo-Jazz innovator Prem Joshua's first encounter with DJ science. Here, an eclectic collection of cutting edge mixologists including Karsh Kale, Sean Dinsmore (The Dum Dum Project), Joi and Dharma Dogz (of Waterbone) shed new light on Joshua's signature sound, translating his East-West alchemies into stunning dub, chill and dance floor masterworks.

Prem Joshua has come a long way from the 18-year-old German rocker, mind blown by a Ravi Shankar performance, answering a mysterious call from a faraway place. While spending the better part of 20 years in India (where he has sold well over 50,000 records), Joshua has developed a unique musical style employing sitar, Indian flutes, saxophone, electronica and tarana-style singing that artfully—and skillfully—bridges the gap between traditional Eastern sounds and Western jazz forms, prompting the Times of India to dub him "the new guru of East-West fusion music."

Dakini Lounge marks the next logical progression in Prem Joshua's storied career. Placing the master musician's songs in the able hands of these modern day studio mavens presents new interpretations and directions for the many listeners already in love with Prem Joshua's music while introducing him to an ever wider audience.

A brief glance at the packaging for this recording might make you think New Age, and indeed this label normally offers recordings in that vein. The disc's cover tells nothing about the music inside--all we see are the ruins of an ancient abbey, the moon in the sky on the front, the sun on the back. But wait. If you get far enough to listen to the recording, you'll find one of the most beautiful and beautifully programmed choral recordings in the catalog. The compositions, organized into the categories "Music of the Morning Rite" and "Music of the Evening Rite," are mostly from 16th- century composers--Byrd, Taverner, Sheppard, White--with a few Gregorian chants and a gorgeous rendition of the 20th-century motet by Duruflé, "Ubi caritas." Conductor/choral music legend John Rutter has assembled a program that's both uplifting and restful; the performance is faultless. One could only complain about the short (39 and a half minutes) playing time. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars Choral work at it's finest........2007-06-03

I really enjoyed this work. I was first introduced to this title through American Gramophone's website and was also my first introduction in the works of John Rutter and the Cambridge Singers. You do not have be religious to enjoy this work. I find the music uplifting and very sublime. I have listened to it many times, and I find that my favorite period to play it is in the morning hours. .

I have since purchased many other Rutter titles including "Images of Christ", and more recently "Lighten our Darkness"

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-05-02

13 years ago, I had the tape of brother sun, sister moon and as a teenager and I would play it every night as I slept, I loved it. I dont know what happened to it and I have ever sence been looking for it, and I just baught the CD and am so excited.

5 out of 5 stars Light and shadows.......2003-07-29

Recorded in the Great Hall of University College School, London, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a true masterpiece in 'Brother Sun, Sister Moon' in 1988. The title derives from a famous prayer by St. Francis of Assisi, and is inspired by liturgical music from (or derivative of) the Middle Ages and Renaissance polyphony and Gregorian chant. The music is meditative, uplifting, and elegant in simplicity and stunning vocal quality.

--Brother Sun--
The first half of the disc is largely composed of pieces from the liturgical Morning Prayer cycle, concentrating on texts from Easter, the most important of Christian days. From the Alleluia to the Acclamations and Surrexit Christus Hodie (Christ is risen today), the flow from Gregorian Chant to compositions by Byrd, Taverner and Palestrina (giants of this type of music) in increasing energy and glory, as befits both a Morning service (time to wake up!) as well as a celebration of the resurrection of Christ. Perhaps of particular note here is the cantoring of bass Gerald Finley in the Easter Acclamations.

--Sister Moon--
The second half of the disc concentrates on music of the evening; in particular, the Compline service, a service of unwinding and sombre meditation with which monastic communities conclude their days of work and worship. Many churches have reincorporated Compline into a regular cycle of services; some have even done so as a result of exposure to this recording. The music here is softer and less energetic than that of Morning prayer. This includes music from Whyte and Sheppard (also masters of the Medieval-to-Renaissance liturgical polyphony) as well as a brilliant motet by twentieth century composer Duruflé for the Ubi Caritas.

--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words, in both Latin and English, for each of the pieces recorded here. It has an excerpt from a prayer by St. Francis, and a basic introduction to the music relating it historically and liturgically. One thing conspicuously missing is any biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the basic listing of singers.

--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.

--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. For this particular recording, the choir consisted of eleven sopranos, six altos, six tenors, and six basses.

4 out of 5 stars Cambridge Singers = Quality.......2002-05-23

I do love this cd, but tend to play certain tracks as my first love is chant. I play the Victimae Paschali Laudes in the car and sing along - it is so very beautiful that this rendition of this Easter Chant is worth purchasing this cd alone. I love that one track so much, my only criticism of the cd is that I wish they'd centered the entire cd on chant - and I hope they will do one like that in the future because the quality of the voices is stunning.

5 out of 5 stars American Gramaphone, please reissue this title........2000-03-30

I originally obtained this CD through Minnesota Public Radio. The first time I listened to the Ubi Caritus, I was moved to tears. The CD became my favorite to play at Christmas and other times. I gave the CD to a friend who has moved to Oregon, deeply regret that it is no longer in production.

John Rutter trains his singers to sing without vibrato, and blends their voices with such balance that they come together as a single instrument. The selection on this CD is perfect to demonstrate the clarity and richness of this ensemble. If American Gramaphone does reissue this title, I will be first in line to purchase it.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars I waited for this for five years.......2006-06-30

Between Amazone, Ebay and Napster, I don't usually buy CDs anymore, and I usually wait till I can buy them cheaper "new and used". When this set came out, I was excited, mainly by Disc 5, but wasn't going to spend $70 on it. I waited till it was cheap enough, and got it for Father's day this year.
It was worth the wait.

The concept is great. The packaging is great. The recording is great. Disc five is really cool for an ALW aficionado. There are a few real gems on it; my favorites are Petula Clark's "I Could Have Given You More" and "Benedicite."
I've always thought "Gus the Theatre Cat" made a great medley on the piano with "Unexpected Song" and "I DOn't Know How to Love Him," but wished there was an alternate lyric to match the other two songs. Now that I know there *is*, and it's a good lyric, it's a dream come true.
The melody of "Benedicite" is one of my favorites from _Sunset_ (the book mis-identifies it as "SUrrender"; it's actually "The Lady's Paying" and "Eternal Youth is Worth a Little Suffering"). The lyrics are the canticle from Daniel 3, which comes up every odd Sunday in the Divine Office, so it's nice to have cool music to sing it with.

I haven't bought _By Jeeves_ or _THe Beautiful Game_ yet, to it was great to sample them.

There are other parts of the CD taht aren't found in my collection. I like CD 4 "The Hits."

But the selections on CDs 1-3 don't make sense.

First, any self-respecting ALW fan has the Original London Cast of _Phantom_, so six tracks are totally useless. Why not draw from the Canadian cast with Colm Wilkinson? Or pull out some obscure recordings never published.

Why two different tracks with Michael Ball singing "Love Changes Everything", yet they're hardly any different?

On Disc 5 is "It's Only Your Lover Returning," sung by Julie Covington. It's an early draft of the song (Lloyd Webber and Rice went through several suggested titles) and quite nice. The very thing one expects on a Boxed Set.
So why have the Julie Covington "Don't Cry for Me" on disc 1?? The only difference is a few words, but it's otherwise identical. Why not Elaine Paige or Patti Lupone or Madonna?

The _Evita_ section is otherwise the best, choosing a sample from each major recording, though I'd have chosen slightly differently (as above).

There is a great selection of "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer" from the Sydmonton festival, using the original music that was changed when _Cats_ went to Broadway_. It would have been nice if they'd included more recordings from Sydmonton, like the original lyric of "All I Ask of You" shown on the second DVD to the _Phantom_ movie.

With so many great actress-singers who've played Norma Desmond, why does the collection beat us over the head with Glenn Close?

Paul Miles Kingston must be set for life in royalties, for the number of albums the original recording of "Pie Jesu" has appeared on. "Amigos Para Siempre" is nice, but it reminds me of Shari Lewis's "The Song that Doesn't End," especially when it's been used on so many compilations.

In short, this is a great collection for the obscure material, if you can get it cheap. But for a boxed set, it's a poor sampling, drawn mostly from the most familiar recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection but BIG PUBLISHING MISTAKE! .......2006-01-10

Please beware they made a mistake on this. It's actually the shortened Ray Shell version of STARLIGHT EXPRESS from the original 1984 London cast - NOT the El Debarge single from 1987 like it says on the box. I don't know how they let that goof pass. Sorry to Ray Shell. Having said that, this is an outstanding compilation of Lloyd Webber's greatest hits.

4 out of 5 stars ONE OF LLOYD WEBBER'S BEST COMPILATIONS, DESPITE A FEW FLAWS.......2005-03-21

Regardless of the fact that some of his latest efforts (most notably, The Woman in White) are disappointing, there can be little doubt that Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the greatest composers ever to work in the musical theatre. Ever since his "Jesus Christ Superstar" hit the stage in the early 70-is, it was clear that the conception and perception of musicals are never going to be the same again. Many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. Even though he's British, his influence on the shape of the modern musical theatre expanded over the West End boundaries long ago and has thus made an enormous impact on Broadway. Two of his shows ("Cats" and "The phantom of the opera") hold the record as two the longest running shows in the history of Broadway. He has also been the only composer to have three of his shows running at Broadway concurrently. Some of his awards include three Grammies, a Golden Globe, an Oscar and a bunch of Tony awards. But perhaps most of all, Lloyd Webber is responsible for bringing the musicals and the theatre appealing to the wide audiences, who in different circumstances would not consider seeing a musical. The secret of his success is probably the mixture of beautiful and catchy melodies, interesting subject matter (though some, like Starlight Express, are too thin) and grandiose staging.

Over the years many compilations of his work have emerged. In the late 80-is and early 90-is it was the "Encore" series and lately the one-disc collection called "Gold". The one in question here can be considered one of the best currently on the market. First, it includes a 3-disc selections from all of his shows, minus the latest one, i.e., "The Woman in White", which, considering the triviality of the score, is no great lost. The fourth disc covers some of his most known songs sung by the famous artists. Then, there is the fifth disc with previously unreleased material, most of which are the songs ALW wrote with Tim Rice for various artists during the 70-is. The disks are all neatly packed in a hardcover book that features 67 pages of pictures and text with information about each of ALW's shows. One of the other assets here is the perfect sound quality, since all of the tracks have been digitally remastered.

Here are my basic impressions and comments regarding the material on the discs:

* Disc #1 has the selections from "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita", "Cats" and "Song & Dance". The Superstar material mostly comes from the Concept Recording. Although the songs sound beautiful as always, their orchestration is a bit dated now. Only Steve Balsamo's "Gethsemane" from the 1996 revival cast has a modern rock sound. "Evita" comes with the material from all of the major recordings: London, Broadway and the movie productions, as well as the Concept album. No objections here; since this is one of ALW's most satisfying works, every song is just perfect, although Patti LuPone, the Broadway and overall the best Evita, is left with only a couple of lines. With the selections from "Cats", however, I have some doubts. A plus to the choice of the "Jellicle ball" impressive orchestral sequence from the 1998 movie version and "Mister Mistoffelees" from the 1981 London cast. One of the best known ALW's songs, "Memory", also comes from that album. It's a pretty version and Elaine Paige's rendition cannot be matched, but why include this when the definite version, featuring an 80-piece orchestra and Elaine Paige with much better interpretation, can be found in the same movie version. Thusly, one has to buy Elaine Paige's latest 2-disc compilation "Centre Stage: The very best of Elaine Paige" to get that one. And "Gus the theatre cat" is more a recital than a song, so there was not much point in including that. Marti Webb brings her vocal charm to the "Song & Dance" sequence, Sarah Brightman sings "Unexpected song" with her famous soprano, but as much as I like her version, Bernadette Peters, who was in this show on Broadway is strangely left out here.

* Disc # 2 starts with "Starlight Express". This was never one of my favorite ALW's shows; the plot is even lighter than in "Cats" and the 1984 original cast recording is terribly dated. Yet, here we have one terrific duet, "I am starlight" from the original together with three songs from the later revivals and it seems that fresh orchestrations were just the thing Starlight needed. My favorite remains a touchy ballad, "Next time you fall in love". "Requiem" is the most solemn of all ALW's compositions, written in 1985 to commemorate the death of his father. Placido Domingo's tenor rides together with the chorus all the way through the strong "Hosanna", only to be joined by Sarah Brightman in the final moments of this song. She then gives an echoing deliverance of "Pie Jesu". What can be said of ALW's next show, "The Phantom of the Opera"? A phenomenon in its own right, it's easy to see from the six numbers included here why this is one of the best and most beloved musicals of all time. The cast, the music, the story - everything is perfect. Although "Aspects of love" was never a popular hit, it does have some of the most beautiful love melodies ALW has ever written. "Love changes everything" sung by Michael Ball is probably one of the best tunes ever about love. The rest of the selected material here has a dreamy love flavor and the melodies find their way into your brain in the best Lloyd Webber way.

* ALW's first musical, "Joseph and the amazing Technicolor dreamcoat" was more successful in its revival form than the original from the 70-is. The three songs included here are sung by the show stars, Jason Donovan and Donny Osmond. Maria Friedman was not a lucky choice to play the narrator, as the track from the 1998 movie version shows. "By Jeeves" was ALW's only big flop when it came to the stage in the 70-is. The 1995 revival sounds much better though, full of funny numbers in the best manner of the musical comedy. "Travel hopefully" remains one of the show's highlights on this compilation. "Sunset Boulevard" comes next. "Sunset" remains for me one of Webber's best scores; lush and beautiful. I listen to the original cast recording with Patti LuPone all the time. However, here most of the songs are performed by Glenn Close. A big mistake. If you've ever listened the American premiere recording with her, you'll know what I am talking about. She may have a strong stage presence, but her vocal abilities are too limited, and her aggressive approach to the role lacks any subtlety. Therefore, the two big numbers from this show, "With one look" and "As if we never said goodbye" are ruined by the fact she can't sing. The same goes for the American Joe Gillis, who was played by Alan Campbell. Luckily, Patti LuPone and Kevin Anderson, the original Norma and Joe from the London production, make their brief entrance here with the "Perfect year"; enough to show how better they are. The funny thing is, on the jacket and inside of it, Glenn Close and Alan Campbell are credited as performers in this song as well. If this was a mistake on ALW's part, it was a good one. The next ALW's show, "Whistle down the wind" was never a critic's dear and yet the audiences rushed in to see it in London. The score brings back ALW to his rock and roll roots of the seventies and the story is quite interesting. But the selections here are not the happiest, since the cast recording boasts with much better songs. And finally, "The Beautiful Game". Again, we have one of those ALW's shows that is worth in its individual parts rather than as a whole. "Our kind of love" and "Let us love in peace" are two catchy ballads. The latter is a nice amalgam version not available elsewhere. The two other tracks here I could live without.

* Disc # 4 has the songs from all the above shows performed by different artists. The assembled tracks have their pros and cons. For example, we have some previously unreleased stuff, like Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's operettic rendition of "The heart is slow to learn", or a stunning and epic "A kiss is a terrible thing to waste" from "Whistle down the wind", performed by The Metal Philharmonic Orchestra. Then again, what was the point in including almost identical tracks as the ones on the previous disks? So we have Michael Ball again singing "Love changes everything" with only a bit different orchestration; Sarah Brightman comes out again with the same Phantom duets, but only with the different male singers. It would be much more appropriate to include tracks from the Toronto Cast of the Phantom, with Colm Wilkinson. Other pop deliverances (Tina Arena's "Whistle down the wind", Barbra Streisand's "As if we never said goodbye", Boyzone's "No matter what" and many more) were wisely chosen. Patti LuPone is again nowhere to be found and Petula Clark's "With one look" sounds too worn-out.

* The last disc is probably the one that will be of most interest to Lloyd Webber aficionados. It consists of entirely previously unreleased material ALW for the most part wrote for various artists during his early years, with Tim Rice. Some of these tunes, not successful as a singles, were later used in his shows. Thus "Down thru' summer" became "Buenos Aires"in Evita, "Try it and see", an unsuccessful attempt for the Eurovision was used for "King Herod's song" in "Superstar" and so on. Some of these songs are nicely made pop songs: "Make believe love", ALW's first recorded composition, for which he provided the lyrics; "Goodbye Seattle", sung by Paul Raven, who later became Gary Glitter; "Come back Richard, your country needs you", from a never made musical, sung here by Tim Rice, or Latin flavored "Magdalena", with Tony Christie singing. My all time favorite here is a song called "It's easy for you", sung by none other than Elvis Presley himself. Lloyd Webber and Rice sent him a demo recording that he accepted and recorded this live version a couple of weeks before he died. It's amazing to hear how his voice remained in the perfect shape. Also, there is a track of Andrew Lloyd Webber singing "Policle dogs and Jellicle cats" while plying the piano. His voice doesn't sound bad at all.

Taken as a whole, this compilation makes a perfect birthday or Christmas present to any fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber shows, or just anybody interested in some of the best tunes from the modern era of the musical theatre; despite the flaws I mentioned above. To the former, it may just be the final addition for the Andrew Lloyd Webber collection.

5 out of 5 stars SUCH MAGICAL MUSIC OF THE NIGHT!.......2003-01-19

"Evita." "Sunset Blvd." "Starlight Express." "Jesus Christ Superstar." "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." "Requiem." "Aspects of Love." The man who is the most recognized composer in the history of the musical theatre, the man who has won more Tonys than any other composer, the man who boasts the best-selling show of all time ("The Phantom of the
Opera") and the longest-running show of all time ("Cats"), the man whose homes are filled with three Grammys, five Oliviers, a Golden Globe, and Oscar and too many other honors and hosannas to mention, the man knighted in 1992 certainly doesn't need an introduction. Now Decca Broadway pays tribute to Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber with "Now and Forever," a spectacular 5-CD set compiled and produced by Sir Andy himself. It's cheaper than a
ticket to "The Producers" ... and more much exciting. This treasure trove contains highlights from all of Webber's shows, and a bonus disc of tunes sung by Betty Buckley, Barbara
Streisand, Jose Carreras, Boy George, Charlotte Church, Madonna, Tom Jones, Petula Clark, even Elvis! A must for lovers of theatre---and good music.

4 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Sir Andrew fans.......2002-05-21

This five-CD collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber's career is fantastic. It leaves virtually no stone unturned. I have no doubt that diehard Webber fans will love this, especially for the 5th disc entitled "From the Vaults." This disc alone is worth the price as it contains tunes never before heard by the typical fan. Who knew Elvis did a Lloyd Webber tune?!? I didn't! Also the tune "Benedictine" which the composer wrote for his most recent marriage is not only pretty, but it has the same medley as "The Lady's Paying" from "Sunset Blvd." which I found highly enjoyable. Another great track is the composer himself singing a cut song from "Cats" entitled "Pollicle Dogs and Jellicle Cats" which has the same tune as "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats," but to hear Sir Andrew sing is a blast...he sounds a lot like Al "Year of the Cat" Stewart.
The cuts from the musicals are great but are likely owned by ALW fans as they are on the original cast albums. And I'm glad that there were tunes included from the composers most recent efforts which have yet to make it beyond London (Whistle Down the Wind, Beautiful Game).
My only complaint is the inclusion of way too many tracks by Sarah Brightman. She must've received a great divorce settlement that included having tunes on any ALW collection until the end of time!! Her interpretations of some of the tunes were limp and uninspired. I would've much rather heard casts from around the world rather than yet another song by this disdainful soprano! How about Colm Wilkinson's version of "Music of the Night" from the original Canadian cast of "Phantom"? Or Michael Crawford's version of "Unexpected Song"? What? No Betty Buckley from "Sunset Blvd."? And of course there are songs you KNOW are going to be on the collection before you even listen to it as they have been on EVERY ALW collection for the past decade or so.
A great collection but too much Sarah Brightman!

Composer Tim Janis has long straddled the line between contemporary instrumental and classical music. With An American Composer in Concert, he further blurs that line. The first nine tracks of this disc were recorded by the Tim Janis Ensemble in the composer's studio. They're short, majestic, and relaxing instrumentals named after nature themes ("Cape Elizabeth," "The Fallen Leaves of Autumn," "Pacific Wind"). Things pick up slightly during the 10 live tracks that make up the second half of this disc. Recorded at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center with the American Symphony Orchestra, these tracks feature luxuriant strings, the occasional pennywhistle solo, and one vocal track (a take on "Amazing Grace" with sweeping orchestrations). As with most Janis efforts, there's nothing groundbreaking here, just soothing music and pleasant melodies. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars December Morning.......2004-10-17

It is just so soothing. I've had the opporturnity to see him in person (sort of) on QVC shopping channel. I can just see his face as he places along with the rest of the group. He looks so peaceful and serene. And that is how I feel listening to his music.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid Live Performance from Modern Composer Tim Janis.......2003-04-24

Tim Janis's latest CD is split into two sections; the first 9 tracks feature new works, and the latter 10 tracks are taken from his live performance at the Lincoln Centre (USA) earlier in 2001.

The new tracks are a little repetitive in sound, but there is some quality music within them. Where the CD really takes off, however, is in the live section, which features renditions of his favourite pieces ably supported by the American Symphony Orchestra. Stand-out tracks include "Twin Lights", "Water's Edge" and my favourite of all, "Amazing Grace", featuring the powerful voice of Gwendolyn Leathers supported by some fabulous orchestration.

"White Mountain" deserves a mention of its own for its sheer excellence and beauty. Stunning penny-whistle playing!

These live tracks are taken from Janis's previous releases, including the excellent "Water's Edge" and the now unavailable "Flowers in October".

At over 70 minutes in length, you get a lot of music for your money.

If you enjoy melodic, soothing instrumental music played by a symphony orchestra, this CD may well be the one for you.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Very good but not excellent.......2002-11-22

When I first heard Tim Janis on our local PBS station, I was memerized by his music so I had to get the CD. I'm glad I did but I have to admit when a friend pointed out that all his songs pretty much sounded the same, I had to agree. Maybe as he gets older there will be some more variety, I hope so. He's a very talented young man.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding CD that leaves you wanting more.......2002-03-15

"An American Composer in Concert" is another outstanding CD from Tim Janis. The lush mixture of ensemble and orchestral songs truly transport you to a better place emotionally and mentally. Tim Janis composes the music I've been waiting my whole life to hear, though I didn't know it until I heard it. I'm much more at peace with nature and myself after listening to his music. On this CD, "Blue Hill Bay" is probably my favorite of all Tim Janis' songs, but all the songs on this CD (with the possible exception of a vocal rendition of "Amazing Grace" that doesn't seem to belong) are great. If you haven't heard Tim Janis' music, you owe it to yourself to get this one and listen to it. Since I've found his music grows on people, I guarantee if you listen to your CD 5 times, you'll be hooked like I am and explore his other CD's as well. Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible music from an incredible evening..........2001-11-23

I LOVE the music of Tim Janis and this CD is a truly wonderful CD. This CD has georgeous live tracks and extra bonus tracks to make it completely full of breathtaking melodies...I would truly recommend it to anyone who wants to have some beautiful music around the house!

Alongside their swashbuckling countrymen in Amorphis, the Finnish band Sentenced have long abandoned their death-metal roots in search of a less punishing approach. This conversion doesn't earn any points with the diehards, but raises the question: Why shouldn't metal bands create radio-friendly, textured melodies? Sentenced mixes heavy-metal strychnine with the saccharine sweetness of pop and comes up with a fetching formula that's still 10 times dirtier than Creed. After all, Sentenced is merely saucing up ballads like Black Sabbath's "Changes," Judas Priest's "Last Rose of Summer," and Iron Maiden's "Strange World." Like it or not, schmaltz is part of heavy metal, and Sentenced pulls it off with Scandinavian poise. --Ian Christe

Album Description

This is the eighth release from Sentenced. Produced by Hill Hiilesmaa (Moonspell, Theatre of Tragedy). 11 tracks and the bonus enhanced video to 'Killing Me Killing You'. 2002.

i liked this album better than their funeral album. its a good metal album for people who like a little singing in their metal.

5 out of 5 stars The editorial review sucks.......2005-07-21

This is a great melodic death album. Clearly the man who wrote the editorial view knew very little about this sort of music. Sentenced are almost like one parts bodom, one parts in flames, spliced with clean vocals.

And they're nothing like creed at all.

5 out of 5 stars Most mature and BEST!!.......2005-07-05

Masters of depressive metal have done it! Their best album that even beats one of my all time favourites, Down. This album is simply breathtaking. Cold White Light ain't as heavy as Down nor as catchy, but much more emotional and thoughtful. Production is also top notch. Listening to Cold White Light envokes many emotions in me at the same time: depression, hope, grief and joy. No other album has ever done that. It's funny to read how some people wonder the theme chosen by the band. Depression and hatred and all that is very common and daily mood for a Finnish guy. It goes without saying if someone (me) feels this way most of the time. Especially wintertime it's very dark and no sunlight at all for many weeks or months, one or another inevitably begins to hold and ponder these thoughts in his/her head. It's something you can't experience and feel if you live in the tropical zone or somewhere nice, warm and sunny place. It's a very natural subject to start writing songs.

"Cross My Heart and Hope to Die" is simply amazing! The guitar sound is something never heard before, not even from Sentenced, there's something so emotional, it's unmatched. Laihiala's vocals are so sad and emotional that it almost makes me cry, so sad yet so hopeful. Maybe the best track on album and one of their all time best.
"Brief is the Light" Absolutely beautiful melodies and lyrics. This is actually very positive song, at least for me it has become my cure for depression. The song and lyrics are extremely effective when listened at the dark of winter or at a brightest summernight when sun never sets. Then it hits you, 'brief is the light', and I mean daylight and summer alltogether is very brief, though the lyrics are about the light of life. Guitar solo is amazing. Competes with "Cross My Heart..." for the best song on this album.
"Neverlasting" a really trashy piece that shows Sentenced can still make very heavy songs. And that clapping effect in the middle of the song is not handclapping, it's Laihiala (or someone) clapping his bare buttocks with wet hands =D.
"Blood and Tears" with trademark guitar sound and riffs from Tenkula, very catchy and rockin' song.
"The Luxury of a Grave" has over the top funny lyrics but still very nice song with again awesome guitars.

It's difficult to discribe how I feel about this album, or what it means to me. It's like a neverending elixir of life for me, purification. Listening to it makes me rejoice of life once again. Right now when I'm writing this (and listening the album) is a beautiful summernight at 1:00am and the sun is setting lighting the whole sky, and to rise again in an hour...and I feel great!

Need to say? Get this album immediately if you want to experience something depressing...or joyful...or anything at all that touches your emotions!

-Make the most out of your day/for brief is the light on our way/on this momentary trail-

4 out of 5 stars Great, but Could have been better.......2005-06-14

I was hoping this CD would sound more like Crimson, No big deal, these guys still rock, I just tend to listen to Crimson more then Cold White Light

4 out of 5 stars more sarcasm, more 80's rock, less depression..........2005-01-17

..which happens to be a good thing! Granted, this album may not be a heavy metal-milestone(labelling this as heavy metal may even be a stretch), but the songs are slick, catchy and well-written. Some really nice melodies crop up from time to time and most of the choruses are pure sing-along material. The singer is obviously having a blast (even when the lyrics don't sport the best English in the world) and the bass 'n guitars are thick in the mix. Just listen to that solo at the end of the first song, great stuff! This album may be far removed from their death-roots but it's an enjoyable slab of heavy rock. Recommended!

This cd is a copy of a tape I had bought twice before. Each time loosing it in a move or some other crazy happening. I always loved the music so was thrilled when my roommate saw it here. If you want music to the ancient beliefs this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting.......2006-05-29

This lady has a truly enchanting voice. The voice reminds me some of Loreena McKennitt. She also sings in the celtic ballad style. My favorite Pagan CD.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful.......2006-01-11

I have heard bits and pieces of this cd for years at a group I attend. Now I can listen to the whole thing, and appreciate the flow of it.
The vocals are all in a pleasing, and singable range.Even the cd cover and art are fabulous.
This is a cd I would recommend to any pagan, Bring back the light is my favorite Yule song ever.
I do disagree with a previous reviewer, this cd does not touch on Christianity at all. The song Heaven's gift is about the birth of a child. A gift from the heavens, is an appropriate term for a baby. Even as a non-Christian the heavens still lie above me. The heavens contain the sun, moon, and the stars. In my opinion Gypsy has gone beyond a knee-jerk reaction to the term heaven, and that is a good thing.=)
*editted to add that the previous review I mentioned is the one that reacts to the "God themed songs towards the end of the album"

5 out of 5 stars Spin, merry meet, merry meet & good measure.......2005-12-28

I keep thinking that Gypsy is an older sister from a past life. Hearing her music is to let her tell you of her love of life, love of Magick, love of peace and the Lady & Lord.

I know Christians who would never allow themselves the opportunity to listen to Gypsy, because of the Pagan/Wiccan theme, to which I say it is their loss, and am sad they choose dogma over enjoyment of some excellent music. I, as well as many Pagans, have no problem with other types of spiritual music, and I am mystified why some choose to see Pagan music as out of bounds.

Gypsy was one of my first experiences into the realm of Pagan music. It completely blew me away, how someone could put so much information into one song on how to cast a circle (Enchantress), which I have used parts in my own rituals. Her "Two Witches," is charming, being a song of her relationship as friend with Laurie Cabot, and the beautiful, etherial "Lady," make this CD a joy to own.

I had waited for years to see this album come out on CD, and when I found out it was released I immediately bought it.

Enchantress is a wonderful introduction to Pagan music, and would be a proud addition to anyone's CD library.

Blessings, and enjoy the journey.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome .......2005-04-18

I absolutely love this CD. She has the most beautiful voice I have heard since Stevie Nicks. All the songs are great, Especially "Medicine Song." It shows that pagan music CAN and DOES rock.

4 out of 5 stars Reid Revered Live.......2004-04-26

This is not the place for those new to Reid's music as a start ,"River", "Bang Bang" and "Terry Reid" are the starting points. But for those of us who have followed Reid's musical legacy for the past 35 plus years it is a key element, unlocking many unanswered questions and filling gaps to the pre-River period.
Joining Terry at this point was David Lindley and his contributions are monumental in understanding what could have been had this formation stayed intact post River.

Amazing renditions of the Lindley compostion "C'mon Mary Ann" and the Reid/Lindley performance on "No Good Situation" is nothing less then transcendent.
The big surprise is the encore of "Rich Kids Blues" sandwiched inbetween Bob Dylan's "To Be Alone With You" that ends this historic archival performance.
4 stars due to the recording quality but the performance offsets any of the misgivings of the sound. Amazing what could have been had Lindley stayed the course with Reid and toured behind the River. But that's history and this is what we're left with!
Thanks Water for putting this gem together. Now how about new versions of "Seeds of Memory" and "Rogue Waves" so everyone can enjoy Terry Reid and his recorded legacy! What a voice!!
