What could have been a colossal self-indulgence proves a startlingly vital album.
Volume IV is faithful to the ethos of early Joe Jackson hits like "One More Time" and "Is She Really Going Out with Him?" Built around clattering drums, jarring guitar, hyperactive keyboards, snarling vocals, and lyrics riddled with puns and double-entendres, it harkens back to the early 1970s and late 80s, when Jackson peddled a wordy and venomous strain of new wave pop. But Jackson is too clever to get suckered by nostalgia. Here he wryly contemplates his middle-aged present from inside his old clothes. The best of the resulting songs, "Blue Flame" and "Still Alive," are as good as anything hes done.
Volume IV is where Jackson completes his circuit, reuniting with his original band and reacquainting himself with his original live-to-tape recording methods.
--Andrew Mueller

Customer Reviews:
The Most Relaxing Classical Album In the World Eveer, Volume II.......2006-08-28
Good selection of music, poorly performed and badly arranged. Good album for a tag sale. Same comment applies for Volume I.
Great music listein to while you read in bed.......2005-08-21
I have listened to this CD for the last several years before going to sleep at night. I love classical music, and this is great music to help make my soul feel at peace and unwind after a taxing day.
A must buy for the non-snobbish classical music fan........2004-10-22
I bought Vol. 1 of this series and was quite satisfied, but I have to say I'm more than satisfied with this one. If you can just mellow out and enjoy some great pieces, you'll love this CD. #15 on Disc 2 is almost worth the price alone!
A bliss of spirit........2004-09-18
That's disc will open You a wonderful, beautiful world of sounds, their harmony & emotion : you'll feel your heart full of
Joy, Tears, Love.
Good LUCK!
Boring.......2004-05-11
Yes this CD will put you to sleep in minutes. Its the most boring uninspiring classical music. The first CD was very good but this Vol. 2 is like most movie sequels....AWFUL !

Volume I of the immensely popular Mozart Effect series of music attempts to do no less than "strengthen the mind." One thing is for certain: the music chosen on the disc by author and scholar Don Campbell--excerpts from Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 1; Violin Concerto, No. 3; Ein kleine nachtmusik; and others--includes some of the strongest pieces the composer wrote. Though the performers on this disc (Capella Istropolitana, Northern Chamber Orchestra, and violinist Takako Nishizaki) are far from world-class, this is still a delightful collection and one that--at least according to the liner notes--will increase your alertness and perhaps your IQ. Volume II features music for "rest and relaxation," while volume III will "unlock creative spirit." With music this entertaining, who can dispute these claims? --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
great music.......2007-02-19
CD arrived in excellent condition. The music is very uplifting, soothing and relaxing. Well worth the purchase
Music for the Mozart Effect.......2006-03-19
This CD is a compilation of various tunes geared to stimulate the mind. I really enjoy listening to it!
Mozard Effect... Which Songs?.......2005-12-03
It's also important to remember that the Mozard Effect... was mostly studied using Mozart's Sonata in D for two pianos. Although all classical music may have good side effects when it comes to learning and concenrtration and stimulating of the mind, most studies used Mozart's two pianos sonata. Which isn't on this album. And the reasoning behind it's benefits are possibly due to the nature of having "dueling" pianos making complex harmonics. Just remember to buy this because you like Mozard, not because you think you are going to make your children geniouses. That's just a bunch of hype.
Important to remember it's not proven.......2005-05-22
It's important to remember that the Mozart effect has not been proven. The behavioural consequences of listening to Mozart is not unique, and can be achieved with any classical music, since the mozart effect has nothing to do with behavioural consequences, but subtle changes in the brain. The pattern of Mozart's music is thought to correspond to a coding mechanism of brain cells that created more dynamic circuits...but remember, it's not proven.
Virtual wonder for academic excellence! Timeless CD!.......2002-02-23
If there is one music CD that will change every person's life, this is it. It is known to enhance a person's concentration. What more could you ask - learning while listening to music. Advice to students: if you want to accumulate academic medals of excellence from grade school to college, if you want to be the best worker you can be - a doctor, a lawyer, programmer, this is the CD to buy. Not even other kind of music - pop, ballad, rock and roll, rap, jazz, can equal the impact this can bring. Taking and passing board examinations, certifications will be a breeze when one combines the Mozart CD with great effort (which becomes effortless) of studying.

We All Live Together...Vol 4.......2000-06-27
This is great children's CD. I use it daily in my preschool classroom. The songs are catchy and educational.I particulary like "Hand Jive". This is a song where children listen to clapping beats and repeat back the same beat. Great fun! I also like "The Days of the Week" songs in English and Spanish. This is a great way to help children learn about another language in an easy, fun way. I would recommend this CD to anyone who works with children. It is a great CD for parents to keep in the car for those long car rides.

Mozart effective.......2007-04-07
I love classical music, bought this for my child who has attention difficulties, he enjoys hearing it in the background as he completes his homework assignments.
Mozart is #1!.......2007-02-20
I tried this cd when I studied for math and physics to improve my grades and it sounds kind of crazy but the very first time I listened to this about a week before my trigonometry exam, I made the highest grade on it than ever before. There is something truley amazing with these volumes of the mozart effect, im going to get volumes 1-5 because it really helps me with math. I actually look forward to doing my math homework now..its brilliant! One of my favorite songs out all the albums is on this one..its song #3 on the focus cd,its awesome! Preview it and you will see what I mean.
must have for ADHD.......2006-03-09
I ordered this cd set for both my son and husband who have ADHD. It absolutely has a calming effect on both. My husband has the cd on his IPOD and sleeps through the night. My son listens to the cds while doing homework and to fall asleep.
If you have a child w/ADD/ADHD, this cd set is worth a try.

Perfect for athletes--budding, established, weekend, or even armchair. The Jock Jams series (along with the Jock Rock and Slam Jams series) collects top hits in their most danceable, groove-shaking format--perfect for a workout or a party where you want to feel like you're at a stadium. There's plenty to like here: Puff Daddy's toe- tapping, posthumous tribute to Biggie Smalls, "Mo Money Mo Problems"; the annoyingly catchy "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" from the Backstreet Boys; Fatboy Slim's wicked nick of the riff from the Who's "I Can't Explain" on "Going Out of My Head." There's even some fun vintage Jock Jams tracks, such as Salt 'N Pepa's "Push It" and House of Pain's "Jump Around." Still, who would have thought that a song with the refrain "pissing the night away" would end up as a jock anthem? Certainly not Chumbawamba, even though "Tubthumping" makes an appearance here. The world moves in mysterious ways. --Randy Silver

I love CDs with continuos mixing, and this is no exception. You've got all the coolest pop, dance and rap hits on one collection. The highlight is Going Out Of My Head by one of my favorite artists Fatboy Slim. You also get Everybody (Backstreet's Back) by Backstreet Boys, One More Night by the amazing Amber, mainstream hip-hop anthems such as Raise The Roof and Gettin' Jiggy With It, and the collection even goes Old School with House Of Pain's Jump Around. Who would have thought Quad City DJs could have made it onto yet another party collection? They did though, with the incredibly catchy Space Jam. Another great song is the 2 Unlimited Megamix which contains all of their biggest hits. If you like the music that they play at stadiums, or you just are looking for an instant party, this is definately the CD for you.
Great for Cheering!.......2000-04-05
I'm on a cheerleading/dance squad, and we used about four or five songs on this cd for our half time routines for football and basketball season. It's great to use for performances, stretching, or just for fun.
Jock Jams Vol.4.......2000-01-02
This is my favorite Jock Jams! It is so up beat! The Son of Jock Jams is my ultimate favorite mix. My pom-pon squad used it as one of our dances, and got the most intrest and attention from people! It is truly a great cd!
Jock Jams4 special review.......1999-12-24
I think this is a great cd. For people who are into this type of music. I think it was probably the best Jock Jams CD yet. If you like Jock Jams or Jock Rock or slam Jams you'll definately love this CD. Some cool songs: were in my opinion: Gettin' Jiggy With it, Backstreet's back, space jam, unlimited megajam, though most of the songs were great.
jock jams vol.four from my point of view.......1999-12-20
The mix was good but not better than the first one,the mega jam was great ive never heard of one till then and i thought it was awesome baby with a capital A.But i want to know why they dont use slam jams songs in the mixes,or jock rock vol.one songs?.I think putting oldies, and some country songs stirs the cd up and makes it better. And,heres a thought maybe add some Reggae it might make the mixes sound better,or even the cd.I liked slam jams vol.one maybe use some of those songs on new jock jams as i see they did on jock rock 2000:elvis costello-pump it up.Keep adding:Fatboy Slim all my friends and i like him.
THANK YOU

Originally released in 1952, Harry Smith's landmark three-volume Anthology of American Folk Music literally instigated a revolution in music--suddenly, this collection of scratchy 78 sides made "folk" cool again (it would stay that way forever after). But Smith--filmmaker, guru, and alchemist--originally intended for a fourth volume of the set to be created. Thanks to Revenant, we have it now--nearly five decades after its gathering. Smith's two-CD collection takes works from the Blue Sky Boys, the Carter Family, Bukka White, Robert Johnson, and a dozen or so forgotten blues and old-time artists, mostly from the '20s and '30s. In the copious liner notes, the late Smith confesses that this volume was "lost" because his original liner notes went missing; he had hoped to create a thorough analysis of how each song's theme was interrelated. Thus, there are some truly great transitions--"John Henry Was a Little Boy" by J.E. Mainer's Mountaineers leads ironically into "Nine Pound Hammer Is Too Heavy" by the Monroe Brothers; Lead Belly's breakup ode "Packin' Trunk" segues into Big Joe Williams's "Baby Please Don't Go." Gorgeous packaging and thorough liner notes by Dick Spottswood, Greil Marcus, Ed Sanders, and others makes this set even more essential. Like so many of the musicians he admired and promoted, Harry Smith's real genius wouldn't be recognized till after he died. Here it is, folks. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
I'd give this album six stars if I could!.......2001-07-29
It's hard to imagine that anything could be better than the original Folkways box set (Volumes 1-3), but this album is. Everything I love about V1-3, there is even more of here. The eerie juxtaposition of darkness and jubilation pretty much sums up the whole 20th Century in an hour and a half. Yes, it's short and pricey, but better in my mind to preserve Smith's original vision - after all, he scuttled the original release of this album in order to stay true to that vision.
Way Overpriced but..........2000-10-10
it's an excellent collection. I mean, for about the price of two of these you can almost buy the original 6-CD Anthology. Fortunately, the songs are beautiful, and like the original Anthology, way weird. The Carter Family cuts are scary in their dead-pan beauty; Bukka White's Parchman Farm Blues is one of the saddest blues ever and the Blue Sky Boys' On the Bank of the Ohio is sort of like Jim Thompson's The Killer Inside Me meets Bill Monroe. A great selection.
Is it worth the hefty price though?
My 2 cents.......2000-09-07
The price is too high and the discs too short. It really does lack the magic of the original mainly due to the lack of Harry Smith's original notes and overall design. What it does have is a brilliant biography of Smith who was an all around oddball and flake (he refused to release this originally because the label wanted to include a pro FDR song!). However he came about compiling this list from his enormous collection (shortly before he sold it the New York Public Library), the result is a brilliant mix of obscure and known tracks from the depression.
So, if you liked the original, you know you are going to buy this someday (where else can one find such an appreication for jug band music?). If you are a fan of "Race and Hillbilly" like me you'll give blood to get this.
Vol. 4, H. Smith's Anthology Of American Folk Music.......2000-07-20
Volume 4 fits very well with the previous three. There are a lot of old-time music anthologies out there these days but there's something going on with Mr. Smith's work that seems to be lacking in the others. I find all of the tracks of Vol-4 to be memorable performances. The Leadbelly cut particularly sticks in my mind, but on another day I might single out any of the others as well.
The accompanying notes are extensive & well-presented although it's black ink on dark brown paper in tiny font, so the reading can be tough. And you are paying for the presentation in the pricetag.
I was half-expecting to be disappointed by this album because the earlier release was so important to me, but it turns out that this one makes for great listening as well i.e. it has the elusive 'HS-factor' going for it too. If you are the type of person who got changed by the 3-Volume Folkways Anthology, then you will dig Volume 4. Really, it's been a rumor for so long .. it's incredible that it is now generally available.
Overdue Closure for Harry's American Folk Masterpiece.......2000-06-21
Thanks to John Fahey and The Harry Smith Archives 'The Anthology' has now been respectfully completed (sans Harry's original liner notes and design). Volume 4 is a well qualified supplement to 'Smithsonian Folkways' volumes 1 through 3, and is very close to what Harry originally intended. The Monroe Brothers, The Carter Family, The Memphis Jug Band, Leadbelly, Sleepy John Estes, Bukka White, Uncle Dave Macon, Robert Johnson---the forgotten folk masters who became American icons after Harry shared his record collection with us in 1952---are represented here with outstanding performances. Not to mention the several artists you possibly haven't heard---just revel in the acapella beauty of The Heavenly Gospel Singers 'Mean Old World'. Aside from wondrous historic music 'Volume 4' is another loving tribute to the eccentric genius of the irascible Harry Smith. Without this offering, you certainly don't have the entire 'Anthology', and although the packaging doesn't match the Smithsonian set, it is very nicely done---just don't try to put it in your plastic CD rack. If you're into your folk roots don't miss this one!

Customer Reviews:
thanks naxos.......2007-03-18
naxos has provided me with so much great music over the years at budget price, i want to thank the folks over there right up front. this is one of my very favorite naxos releases. i know next to nothing about the lute. never touched one, never seen one in person. how many strings are on the things, anyway? to the listener, i don't think that it really matters having such answers resolved. just listen. this is gorgeous, quiet music. perfect for late at night. the tone of the instrument combined with the atmospherics of the canadian church that this recording was made in is haunting on the ears. i listen to this disc over and over again. great stuff for reading to in the evening. thanks again, naxos.
Shining Late-Baroque Light.......2003-05-11
Weiss was a contemporary of Bach and it's been said they knew one another and, perhaps, even made music together at one time or another. The music on this disc is quite good and satisfies my craving for thoughtful music. I sometimes feel that music composed during the late Baroque period proper (right up until 1750, typically) is just too light and transparent. This cd dispels my own notions and for that I am grateful. One look at the price on this disc should further remove all doubts about a purchase. If you like music from the Baroque and/or fretted string instruments then get it now. A wonderful 6-dollar investment.
Mesmerizing!.......2002-01-28
The four albums (actually five if one includes the Hagen album) of Barto playing lute music by Weiss are truly mesmerizing. They cover the range of the Weiss's intricate compositions. I truly hope that the Naxos label keep bringing out additional recordings by this outstanding artist. The recording is warm and immediate. Highly recommended!
Outstanding voyage into the realm of the lute.......2002-01-03
If you are looking for a wonderful journey into the subtle beautiful world of the baroque lute you have found your ticket. Robert Barto demonstrates his skills with the lute. All his recordings come highly recommended.
Another Triumph.......2001-12-10
Robert Barto is doing every lute fan out there a great service by recording these works, and this, the fourth volume in the series, is another smashing success. He again chooses a nice selection of pieces that vary in key, mood and difficulty, and the overall effect is wonderful. The contrast between the intense, melancholic f-minor sonata and the other, "sunnier" works in A-major and C-major is quite striking. Barto again establishes himself as perhaps the leading interpreter of Weiss; as for Weiss, he can't seem to write a bad note!

one of the greatest ever.......2005-10-19
Johnny Cash is one of the great American artists. These are the early classics. Cash is probably the only one is equally great as Elvis Presley. The collection is an event. My dad was a big fan of Johnny Cash and he introduced me to his music when I was a kid. I had many of his records when I was young. It was great to have that music around. I didn't realize how great Johnny Cash was until I was much older. There are a lot of the great early singles like "Hey, Porter" and "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I Walk The Line." There are other great tunes that you wouldn't get in a proper greatest collection like "Get Rhythm" and "Trail To Mexico." The greatness of Cash seems so effortless. These songs are so simple and so ingenious. There is a style of guitar picking that is essential to any Cash record. Some of the later stuff seems inspired by spiritual music. There are constant themes of respect for the land, and a sense of place, and being in jail. Johnny Cash is also known for love songs. Those are central to his work. There are many songs about being a loner like "I Heard That Lonesome Whistle Blow" and "Always Alone." One of Dad favorite's songs was "Hey, Good Lookin'." There are 61 gems in this collection. It is very fine. Johnny Cash is a poet and a great musician. He is a big influence on music.
