King Crimson has never been so much a band as an adventuresome modern musical academy, a prog-rock institution presided over by headmaster/guitarist Robert Fripp with a playfulness that often belies his more scholarly goals. And though its alumni have gone on to contribute to a dizzying array of more commercial enterprises (including Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes, Bad Company, Foreigner, and Roxy Music), Fripp's dedication to experimentation has relegated him to influential cult status. Entering its fourth, unlikely decade with ConstruKction of Light, King Crimson's pared-down quartet (Fripp, 80's recruit/guitarist Adrian Belew, and '90s inductees Trey Gunn on touch guitar and Pat Mastelotto on drums) offers up a curiously lugubrious mockery of rootsy Delta despair ("Prozac Blues") before venturing into the familiar, hypnotically polyrhythmic soundscape of the title track, the challenging harmonics of "Into the Frying Pan," and the delicate, spacious constructions of "FraKctured." "The World Is My Oyster" is almost Floydian in feel and scope, though the Pink brigade haven't made music this oddly compelling since the '70s. There are monster chops throughout, as well as some heavy riffing that underscores Crimson's continued influence on bands like Tool, Marilyn Manson, and Nine Inch Nails. ConstruKction is as restless as it is modern--and progressive in all the right ways. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars King Crimson - An Inconsistant Effort.......2007-07-17

The double trio disbanded, Robert Fripp and company carries on as a 4 piece for this the band's most recent studio album. Tony Levin and Bill Bruford are gone with only Adrian Belew, Trey Gunn, and Pat Mastelotto remaining from the previous version of the band. Personally I don't think this album is as good as their previous effort "Thrak", but it does have it's moments. There are two songs here that are sequels to earlier works "FraKctured" and "Larks Tongues In Aspic Part IV". Both of these tracks are great and expand upon, rather than detract, from the original tracks. This is the band at their instrumental finest and to me ranks right up there with their best works. The opening track "ProzaKc Blues" is different where the band takes a somewhat traditional sounding blue riff and turns it upside down. The rest of the album is just so so. I find "The World's My Oyster......" to be really annoying, which is rare to say about any King Crimson song. In the end I think the band has produced better albums, but this one is a decent yet inconsistent effort.

1 out of 5 stars The ConstruKction of Krap.......2006-11-19

Having been a King Crimson fan for a long, long time I was really disapponted in this disc. This is, without a doubt, the band's worst release. I was not worried about the fact that neither Bill or Tony appear on this release. However, there is not one minute of this that is salvagable. Everybody is entitled to a miss once in awhile I guess this is King Crimson's. They are a REALLY GREAT band so buy any of their other releases. The least annoying track on here is I Have A Dream but I think that it might have something to do with the fact that it's near the end of the disc. Larks Tongues in Aspic should never have been used as a title on here as it might give a bad impression of som of their older discs Larks, Tongues in Aspic and Three Of A Perfect Pair.

Guitarist/bandleader Robert Fripp and his shifting KC coterie have always forged their idiosyncratic, insanely technical music from an isolated universe; and, after the five years of "research and development" leading up to this album, Crimson's newest lineup shows some flab (mostly in singer/guitarist Adrian Belew's dated stabs at social satire). Still, the band's beautifully complex guitar-centricity belies its members' formidable age and proves why King Crimson remain both relevant and influential 30-plus years into their career. Fripp, himself pushing 60, delivers some of his most demanding playing ever on "The ConstruKction of Light"'s weirdly contrapuntal title track and in the four-part "Larks' Tongues in Aspic -- Pt. IV." And over Fripp's zigzagging leads and ambient drones on "Heaven and Earth" and "ProzaKc Blues" (ugh), drummer Pat Mastellotto and touch-guitarist Trey Gunn perform polyrhythmic workouts that are alternately angular and thunderous. It's far from perfect, but to those who've followed Crimson's trail these past three decades, "The ConstruKction of Light" should provide a welcome shot of audio bliss.

If there is 1 group that embodies progressive Rock; it sure is King Crimson.
No changes from any previous album for the band, "The Construction of Light" stretches the language of Rock into Jazz and Classical music.
If you are planning to work or be busy while listening to this album, my advice is remove that album from your CD Player and play something more appropriate to the task you are doing.
However, If you are planning to sit and listen well to your loud speakers, then you will discover that this is an outstanding release for the band.
I am usually not a big fan of King Crimson, however this album definitely deserve a standing ovation. Enjoy

Okay, I understand to some degree the hesitation with which an album with recycled song titles might be viewed. But are the nay-sayers really listening to the album? No.

First of all, quit bitching about Bruford and Levin being gone. I don't recall seeing them on King Crimson's first four studio albums. This band has rarely been able to retain the same line-up for two albums in a row, and you know what? That's just fine. Because, at the end of the day, it's still going to be a fascinating (and different) ride than what you've been through before. Personally, although I admire Bruford's work immensely, I don't miss him here.

I will admit that Fripp made a huge mistake wussing out on the song titles ("Frakctured, Larks' Tongues Part 4). But LISTEN to the tracks. They are NOT the same, and they are NOT recycled. Although Frakctured uses the same modal scale in general as the original Fracture, it achieves something very different in its scale and interaction with the players. Play the two tracks back to back; you will hear some similarities because the same guitarist is on both tracks. But the tracks take you on different rides. If Fripp had not festooned this track with the unfortunate title, people would be commenting on how nice it is that he's returned back to a style and updated it.

The one track I'm not over the moon about is "Prozakc Blues", although it's humorous in its own way. Everything else on this album is pure gold, and if you're not getting into it, turn it up louder and drown out the annoying critical voices in your head. This is the most emotional KC studio album ever made, and the most consistent once you get past the first track. Everyone is on top of it all, there is not a performance here that doesn't have this incredible fire of inspiration drenching every note. Granted, it doesn't have much in the way of let-up, which is probably why the last track is even on the album.

But, ladies and gentlemen, upon hearing Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part IV (specifically the Coda), I cried. NEVER has Bob and Co. touched me so deeply and significantly. This is an album that, for me, has sustained repeated listenings without getting boring; there is just too much going on to absorb it in one or two (dismissive) listens. Open your mind, and if you want to hear Bruford playing, follow his albums. I'll bet they're not as good. Personally, I thought Mastellato was far more interesting on this album than Bruford had been on Thrak.

Bottom line, after Thrak (which is my least favorite KC album), I did not expect to really care about a new album. This one almost immediately became my all-time favorite by them. Belew's lyrics are the best set he's ever written, period. Bob, as always, is in incendiary top form. They finally have a bass end that can keep up with both Fripp and Belew, and Mastellato kicks a**. Period. The music smolders and smokes, having just come from Hades; it was still obviously covered with brimstone when they took it into the studio.

5 out of 5 stars netting the monster.......2000-05-21

The second record from King Crimson Ver 4.0 (4.1, I guess, with the departure of Levin/Bruford) is harder, heavier and just plain better than Thrak, making no commercial concession at all. And a good thing too. More than any other KC record except Red, this one is dominated practically front-to-back by guitar: specifically, guitar arpeggios. Climbing arpeggios, descending arpeggios. Distempered, bloody-minded, unpretty arpeggios with weird geometries and disorienting time signatures. Wow, you think, Fripp's on form here. However, apart from brilliantly and idiosyncratically defining a uniquely Crimsonian musical architecture, these rapid, flashing nets of notes seem to act like constraints to stop too much chaos, too much anger bursting out. Robert Fripp has always seemed to be a man with something he's afraid of saying, perhaps because it's too primal, too dangerous. Nevertheless, KC are always implying it and promising it, which, throughout their history, makes for fascinating but frustrating listening. While `ConstruKction of Light' is powerful, heavy, elegant, streamlined and beautiful, you are always waiting for Robert to JUST LET RIP. Funnily enough, it's Belew who really lets it out here with impassioned and moving singing about depression/state of the world. It's his best vocal and lyrical performance by some distance. Behind him is the monster Fripp, frequently stirring but not yet ready to destroy the world. This man has the potential to make Voodoo Chile, Anarchy in the UK, and every other `raw energy' piece sound like S-Club 7 if he so chooses; and that's what I'm still waiting for.
