Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The spiritual element of guitar virtuoso Steve Vai's music has always been rather like the music itself: flamboyant, but heartfelt; sincere, but not always a cinch to understand. Nowhere is that more evident than on The 7th Song, a sort of greatest-hits collection with a most peculiar concept behind it. Vai, who's always reserved track number 7 on every album for a guitar ballad, puts them all together on one collection, from "Call It Sleep" off Flex-Able to "Touching Tongues" off of Sex and Religion. The 7th Song features three bonus tracks, including "Boston Rain Melody," that came into being during a sound check at the Mothership in Boston. That Steve Vai, what will he think of next? --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Vai's most soulfull and melodic songs all on one disc.......2002-11-23

Steve Vai is without a doubt, one of the most virtuoso guitarists ever to pick up the instrument.
This offering is the quintessential Steve Vai at his most melodic and soulful moments. To try to summize this cd, would be nearly impossible. But, I will say this.... if you have ever been curious about his music or if you have any interest at all in guitar or instrumental related music, this is an absolute must have. This compilation of song number sevens from his previous efforts, is probably the greatest single guitar compilation ever produced.

    5 out of 5 stars A little mistake.......2001-08-30

Of course I had to buy this one like every note Steve's ever recorded, especially because of the 3 "new songs". Unfortunately I have to say that you guys from amazon.com are wrong when you say that the japanese edition included an extra track. There is no such one. So I should have bought the european version. That would have been much cheaper. But this is the first time you failed and I forgive you (he,he), but other customers should be informed - so I wrote this.

5 out of 5 stars A great summary of an incredible career!.......2001-05-26

This album, as many of you know, is a summary of Steve's ballad songs, which are always the 7th song on his albums. Although some tracks on here are not the 7th song. For those of us who already own Steve's other CD's that these tracks come off of, there are several tracks that are newly released. The track "Melissa's Garden" marks a new milestone in Steve's career, it is the first track he has done entirely digitally. It's a beautiful track, full of lush acoustic guitars and soaring electric solos. "Wall of Light" is another amazing track, running in the same experimental vein as "Alien Water Kiss" did on Passion and Warfare. Here Steve again uses the Eventide harmonizer to maximum effect. In my opinion one of the best tracks on this album is the final "Boston Rain Melody", which arose of of a soundcheck from a Boston concert. Truly beautiful melody, a great close to this CD. This CD is an excellent start to anyone just getting interested in Steve Vai, or even for long time fans like myself who are looking for some new tracks.

5 out of 5 stars This it It!.......2006-02-22

The Steve Vai that I wish was evident on every record. Eliminate the weird Zappa silliness and the vocal sludge and the real Steve Vai comes shining through.

    A unique guitar voice.

This and Alive in an Ultra World is ALL of the solo Vai you will ever need. I love Vai and his performance on the The Ultra Zone tour was the best show that I have ever seen -- and I've seen a LOT of them. Can the silliness and enjoy a spiritual experience.

    5 out of 5 stars Quality.......2005-10-10

This entire album is quality, beginning to end. This was when Vai played music like it was an art, without annoying alien gimics. This is the best Vai album in existence, get it, hear it, love it, keep it!

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular, Some of the Best Guitar Playing I've Ever Heard........2005-07-10

I know Steve Vai as being a great guitarist, but this is the first album by him I have listened too. I've listened to the stuff he's done with David Lee Roth and I liked all that, but listening to this it seems to me, Roth held him back. These songs, (all instrumental) are so melodic and heartfelt. They're spectacular.
    Here the songs:
1.For the Love of God-5/5-Phoenomonal to listen to. The guitar work is extraordinary.
2.Touching Tongues-4/5-The only reason for the for the 4 is the 20 or so second vocal, which is unneeded
3.Windows to the Soul-4/5-Considering the lack of vocals, it's amazing how heartfelt this sounds.
4.Burnin' Down the Mountain-2/5-Not that great. Guitar sucks on ths one. Mediocre at best.
5.Tender Surrender-5/5-Great solo, one step behind amazing.
6.Hand on Heart-5/5-In the beginning it sounds like "Since I Don't Have You" But then it gets better.
7.Mellisa's Garden-4/5-There are times when this song sounds like the theme of a pre-school oriented cartoon. It seems to be very experimental.
8.Call It Sleep-4/5-Sounds a lot like his DLR stuff (Yankee Rose,
    Shyboy) but still good.
9.Christmas Time-5/5-Not exactly the ideal christmas anthem, but pretty cool.
10.The Wall of Light-3/5-Tpp short, doesn't stand out.
    11.Boston Rain Melody-5/5-Very cool.

    A-.

    5 out of 5 stars Melissa's Garden.......2004-10-31

Just wanted to answer Reviewer:"homedecaramel" and his question as to who Melissa refers to from the song titled' "Melissa's Garden".

Melissa was the daughter of close friends of Steve Vai.
She passed away 5 years ago at a fairly young age due to ovarian cancer. Melissa's parents built a beautiful garden as a remembrance of her. Melissa had a wonderful spirit and her spirit lives on as is apparent in Steve's beautiful tribute and in Melissa's Garden.

    5 out of 5 stars this is a music!.......2004-07-16

Steve Vai is one of the most phenominal guitarists ever,I think, the best in "Rock" history.
I feel, and sense his feelings in his virtuosity.

On the track 4, I have sat with them on the roof of his house, watching the fantasitic fire and harvest moon.

And on the track 6, when he couldn't stop laughing in the end, I don't know why ,but I was laughing, too,

Every single tune in this album brings me in some memory.
It might be of "Havona" in Urantia.
