In typically splashy style, Elton John rushed One Night Only, a document of his two-night Madison Square Garden stand, into release just weeks after the October 2000 shows. Basically a rundown of 30 years of chart hits smoothly played (if occasionally roughly sung), the disc is a solid buy for the Elton John fanatic. Others will have to decide if a plethora of guest stars--Mary J. Blige, Bryan Adams, Kiki Dee, Ronan Keating, and Anastacia--warrants owning new versions of old warhorses. Even without the sense of Event surrounding the performances, though, One Night Only satisfyingly captures the thrill of EJ's recent sets. --Rickey Wright

The Final Amazing Concert!.......2007-07-02

"One Night Only" is a good a masterpiece of live recording as 1977's "Here At Last...Bee Gees...Live" was. All the great songs are here, plus a few odd album cuts that truly make this set shine. Highlights include, "Grease" with a thunderous crowd roaring approval; "(Our Love) Don't Throw It All Away', a true tearjerker with prerecorded Andy Gibb singing with his brothers and "Immortality", with a wonderful Celine Dion backed by the brothers. The CD is crisp, clean and clear. It is amazing to hear such fantastic producers who's studio recordings sound the same in concert. This is a classic CD!

The previous reviews we read before getting this production fell short to what we got...not only a flashback to our 'Saturday Night Fever' times but also the lasting impression it has left in our 11-yr old kid. He has managed to learn & sing all the selections, particularly "Words", "Lonely Days" and the "New York Mining Disaster". Absolutely EXTRAORDINARY!

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

Uneven quality but great value.......2007-04-30

Brilliant Classics has found a niche with their extremely low-price multi-disc collections of the work of a single composer or performer. The Bach, Mozart and Chopin Complete Editions are legitimately considered to be artistic and economical triumphs. But the Masterworks series are more uneven. Currently available from Amazon France at about a buck per CD, they're still a bargain for those interested in quickly building a music library. But it's worth keeping a few things in mind. Unlike the Bach and Mozart Editions, these are not always historically informed performances. In this Mendelssohn set, the Hanover Band puts in a cameo (in Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage), but most of the ensembles use modern instruments, techniques and proportions. This doesn't always work out, as in the case of the ponderously heavy recordings of the String Symphonies by an apparently full complement of Gewandhausorchester Leipzig strings (Mendelssohn likely wrote these early works for a much smaller group). The caliber of the performances varies too, ranging from good to poor, and from marquis musicians such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau to a few Dutch who-dats. The chamber musicians generally acquit themselves well (though the Octet recording is marred by an engineering flaw in the last movement, distortion, at least on my copy). But the symphonies suffer from some substandard performances, such as the Italian Symphony's live recording with not only audience noise but also ensemble flaws such as a distracting clarinet squeak in the first movement's recapitulation. Another strike is the lack of program notes. Brilliant's Complete Editions provide a booklet or CD-ROM with program notes, but here you'll need to do your own research.

Despite these shortcomings, this set is still good value (at least at Amazon France's current price of 31 Euros). And it's a fine way to become acquainted with Mendelssohn's music.

A superb collection of Mendelssohn.......2007-03-24

Let me preface this by saying that most of these works were not new to me - I own many other Mendelssohn CDs and have enjoyed his compositions for some time now. Also, this set is available much cheaper elsewhere, particularly from European retailers.
The symphonies are well-performed. 'Reformation' is an inspired live recording. The 12 string symphonies, written in Mendelssohn's youth, are also included. The concertos are exceptional - the violin concerto is as good as you'll find anywhere. The oratorios Elijah and Paulus are included, as well as the complete chamber works and a diverse assortment of choral works. The last few discs include the Lied ohne worte, the epic organ sonatas, and excellent renditions of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Fingal's Cave. While there are a few sketchy performances in the choral and chamber works, the performances and recordings are generally very solid, and the body of work couldn't be better.

The wisdom of their wardrobes notwithstanding, the Bee Gees rank with ABBA as the ultimate '70s pop heavyweights. As the title suggests, the concert collection One Night Only captures the brothers in action, serving as a compendium of some of their greatest hits--"Stayin' Alive," "Night Fever," "More Than a Woman," "I Started a Joke"--fleshed out with Gibb-penned songs successfully recorded by others. Hence, the inclusion of "I Can't See Nobody" (recorded by Nina Simone, among others), "Guilty" (Barbra Streisand), and the Dolly Parton-Kenny Rogers classic "Islands in the Stream." Recorded in 1997, One Night Only shows the brothers' age somewhat, especially in Barry's falsetto, which sounds tinny and forced. They sound awesome on here! it just shows that even with age, the Brothers still sounded fantastic!! I especially loved hearing Heartbreaker, their own version (which was originally done by Dionne Warwick) and Immortality (sung by Celine Dion originally) was great....I loved their version even more than hers. A must have for all Bee Gees fanatics like me!

I really enjoyed this CD. I remember the Bee Gees from their Satruday Night Fever Soundtrack and of course their days during the disco era. I also have a couple of their albums on vinyl including the one with Nights on Broadway, a song that I can still remember my sister playing as a kid.

I must say that this CD was a joy. First to hear the Bee Gees performing all their songs live was fantastic. They do a lot of their songs from the early hits to the later ones. Some of the older songs, before they were big in the disco era, are just wonderful. Also hearing The Bee Gees performing some of the songs that Barry Gibb wrote that were hits for others like Islands in the Stream and Grease is also great. And lastly I loved hearing them crank it up and do all their disco hits without all the studio synthesizers and tricks. And when Barry said, "this song is for Andy"... man that was really a wonderfully emotional moment.

This is a great live album showcasing just some the Bee Gees greatest hits! This albums gets 5 stars for a number of reasons. Firstly you get to hear live Bee Gees' versions of hits they wrote for other artists ('Heartbreaker' - Dionne Warwick', 'Islands In The Stream' - Kenny Rogers, 'Grease' - Frankie Valli, 'Guilty' - Barbra Streisand).
Also there are different takes on songs here. 'Lonely Nights' is turned into a rock number while the memorable/eerie reunion with the late Andy Gibb sounds even more beautiful than the original. Also you get to hear from Maurice Gibb on, for me, one of the the group's slickest songs 'Closer Than Close'.
All the Disco hits are here to get the crowd cronked up but the earlier hits are not forgotten ('How Can You Mend A Broken Heart) as well as new hits ('Alone'). Not even Celine Dion, whom I can't stand, can ruin this album.
These are not minus points but I would have prefered if Robin Gibb had perhaps sang 'Love Me' or 'I've Gotta Get A Message To You' instead of 'The Sun Will Shine'. It would have gotten a much bigger reaction from the audience. Finally while Barry's voice can become a little strained on the falsettos at times he's still great and Robin is in fantastic form here.

This double CD does as good a job of capturing the full-throated, shoe-tossing glory of a Patti LaBelle show as any recording could. Its success as a home-listening experience, however, is diminished by the explosive vocal runs that the singer insists on tossing into every song, whether appropriate or not. Smartly programmed, the album offers a first disc that leans heavily on LaBelle's signature pieces ("New Attitude," "You Are My Friend") and a second that pays homage to Sam Cooke ("A Change Is Gonna Come"), Ashford and Simpson (a duet with O'Jay Eddie Levert on "Is It Still Good to You"), and the Cheryl Lynn disco classic "Got to Be Real" (with another guest, Mariah Carey). Probably a must for fans but a pass for those who haven't already followed her for years. --Rickey Wright

There's not too much of that unnecessary cutesy-poo note manipulation that guest star Mariah Carey is known for on this CD package. Neither Mariah nor anybody else who has come down the pike can TOUCH Patti LaBelle on what she can do with HER marvelous throat. (I'd love to see the irksome Mariah TRY though). This is actually routine Patti but it's a great opportunity to hear her in concert (or to see her if you get the MCA video). I believe this work goes back to 1998, but you may come to consider it as timeless. Patti has made a lot of cover versions of other singers' songs but she more than does justice every time. The Burt Bacharach tune made popular by Dionne Warwick in the early 60s, "Don't Make Me Over", does not suffer in the hands of the exquisite Ms. Labelle. Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come" has been recorded by no less than 60 other artists or groups but none have surpassed Patti's rendition on this CD set. Go for it, I say.

I've believed for a while now that if I was stuck on a desert island, and had only one CD set to bring along, all I'd need is Patti LaBelle's Live! One Night Only. It's as if I'll never get enough of this masterpiece of a live performance. Upon hearing the CD, I became a fan, and no one's voice in my 21 years has touched my soul the way such tracks as "You Are My Friend" and "Change is Gonna Come" have. If Patti simply released live recording after live recording for the rest of her career, I will be one happy young man. So deeply am I inspired by Patti's sheer artistry that New Year's Eve last, I chose to have my own "countdown" with Patti--with my earphones on, I welcomed to my heart Patti's "I Believe" in hopes that it would have an effect on my singing soul for the remainder of the year. It has done that tremendously. Pick this one up, and be inspired over and over again!

OK this is a must have for any true Patti Fan, along with the Cd, the video is a must have. This is Patti at her best. From the breath taking opening "I believe", you know Patti is ready to give her all like only she can do. "When You Talk About Love" is just funky. "Is it still good to you" gives me the chills. "Don't make me over"- WOW!! not to mention "If You Love Me". There are some many moments on this Cd that show Patti as the true Legend she is. Her interpretation and phrasing is unique and her power is too good to be true. Although you can find better live versions of "If You Asked Me To", "New Attitude" and "On My Own" on earlier live recordings and videos, this Cd and video is a must have. Patti is one of the best entertainers and she is at her best on this recording. One can't help admire her energy, the chemistry with her fans, and her ability to take a song to new heights. When you hear her sing, you know it is from the heart and it is always done with much style and technique that most singers could only wish for. She blows every performer from Mariah to Whitney out of the water. Patti has got some serious talent and everyone should experience a Patti Labelle concert at least once.

In typically splashy style, Elton John rushed One Night Only, a document of his two-night Madison Square Garden stand, into release just weeks after the October 2000 shows. Basically a rundown of 30 years of chart hits smoothly played (if occasionally roughly sung), the disc is a solid buy for the Elton John fanatic. Others will have to decide if a plethora of guest stars--Mary J. Blige, Bryan Adams, Kiki Dee, Ronan Keating, and Anastacia--warrants owning new versions of old warhorses. Even without the sense of Event surrounding the performances, though, One Night Only satisfyingly captures the thrill of EJ's recent sets. --Rickey Wright

Elton does a great job - but this could be so much more..........2005-03-30

Elton John has certainly cemented his place in the history of music. He is a legendary performer who has rode a wave of success unlike any artist. Elton John first came on the music scene in 1969. Once his 1970 hit "Your Song" of his self-titled "Elton John" (his second) album was released, it would begin one of the most consistent music careers in the history of music. In fact, from 1969 until 1991 - there wasn't a calendar year that passed without the release of some sort of Elton John album. Even after that, Elton would only miss 2 calendar years without a release between 1991 and 2004 (those years being 1998 and 2003). With the exception of a slight downward spiral in the late 1970s, Elton would also consistently become a "hit" machine. While Elton has released several live compilations throughout his career, this collection "Elton John - One Night Only Greatest Hits" is the only one that provides a good cross section from Elton's early 1970s work through his work in the 1990s. "One Night Only" does deliver some very good Elton John live performances, but it is not without it's flaws.

First up, this was not a single night performance. It actually is a compilation of two performances recorded in Madison Square Garden in October 2000. It seems kind of puzzling of all of the names to call this disc, "One Night Only" was picked (considering it somewhat misrepresents the collection). I usually consider it a cardinal mistake when a live disc is taken as a compilation of live performances from several shows instead of from a single night. By having a compilation of live songs as opposed to a live concert, the flow is disrupted. You also don't get the opportunity to hear the CD as if it were the concert preventing you from getting the full experience. There is something magical about hearing a great performance on a single night. In fairness to this collection, the reason why this was built from two performances was because of the guest vocalists that perform duets with Elton John. It is worth noting that this collection is assembled very nicely and does a pretty good job at trying to simulate that the tracks are from one continuous performance - even though they are not.

It's also worth noting that this is not a complete collection from the two nights. This compilation takes 17 Elton John tracks focusing mostly on Elton's commercially successful "hits". However - there are several songs missing that were performed on the two nights in Madison Square Garden. Most notably missing are: "Funeral For a Friend", "Little Jeannie", "Tiny Dancer", "Club at the End of the Street", "Blue Eyes", "The One", "I Don't Wanna Go on With You Like That", "Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word", and "Come Together". I would have liked to have seen any one of these tracks instead of "Sacrifice" or "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?". It seems like there was an attempt to try to get this album released as a single disc. I still think it would have made a big difference if they included all of the songs and released this as a two-disc collection. All of these omitted songs are included on the DVD version of "Elton John - One Night Only". In addition, even though "One Night Only" includes "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", the duet version that Elton did with Billy Joel on one of the two nights has been omitted. This duet is also on the DVD version, so I can't see there being copyright problems on why this was omitted. Some may say it isn't worth releasing an audio CD that mirrors the video. I tend to disagree. The progressive Rock band Rush released an audio CD for "Rush in Rio" that mirrored the DVD - namely because the band saw some magic with the performance. Perhaps Elton John should have done the same here - because there are some very good performances.

Elton does a very good job on vocals and piano on all of the tracks. Perhaps the tracks that stand out the most are the duets. While Elton is now an "elder statesman" of Rock, he has always been an artist who likes to work with young and upcoming artists as well as established artists. Two of the better duets are with young artists - "I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues" (with Mary J. Blige) and "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting (with Anastasia). Elton performs "Sad Songs" with Bryan Adams - the two have worked together before (Prince's Trust Concert), but I could have thought of better tracks for this duo to perform. The fourth duet is with British Vocalist Ronan Keating who performs "Your Song" with Elton. Finally, Elton does his famous duet with Kiki Dee - "Don't Go Breaking My Heart". While I think it's good that Elton reunites with Kiki Dee, I think it would have been nicer if Elton had brought in another guest vocalist to do that duet with him. I know this may not be a popular position - but from a personal standpoint, Kiki's act has worn thin. This isn't meant to knock the performance - the duet still comes off very well.

In general, there are no bad performances on this collection. Other notable standout performances are "Rocket Man", "Philadelphia Freedom", "I'm Still Standing", and "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me".

The liner notes contain a terrific biographical write-up of Elton John written by John Tobler. It also contains band and musician credits as well as the production credits. While Elton does deliver some solid live performances on this collection, this collection had the potential to be so much more. Probably the weak point is the fact that there are so many missing songs from these performances. Despite the flaws, the quality of Elton's work remains the overriding factor - therefore, I'd recommend this.

WHERE IS THE REAL ELTON??.......2005-02-18

Although there is a bunch of great Elton's early classics and also the sound of the band is really big, Elton's voice is depressing!! Even his outfits do not remember the great 70's and early 80's Elton John's, I mean the personality that he used to transmit on stage. That hairstyle he's wearing is ridiculous!! But the mean problem is about his voice. Elton has better live albums, such as "Here and There" or "17-11-70". Sorry, for me this one can go directly to the trash can.

Even without hitting the high notes,Elton proves he can deliver his old hits with sheer passion and style.This Cd captures a 1999 show that features Kiki Dee and Bryan Adams among others.Classics such as DON"T GO BREAKIN' MY HEART and SAD SONGS sound reenergized and anew.The duet with Mary J.Blige gives a new soulful flavor to I GUESS THAT's WHY THEY CALL IT THE BLUES.

When I first listened to this CD I was very disappointed. He didn't hit the high notes like I remembered. Listened to it once and then put it on the shelf. Later I received the DVD of this concert as a gift and after "watching" the concert, I learned to like this CD too.

Kunzel's different perspective on ALW's musicals.......2005-11-06

Kunzel's offering of Andrew Lloyd Webber suites is a worthwhile tribute to this modern-day titan of globalised musicals. Although this album has a different feel from the original cast albums, Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops still perform these affectionate arrangements of Lord Lloyd Webber's musicals expertly, superbly and voluptiously. The creative arrangements by Crafton Beck and Steven Reineke are tastefully and, for the most part, faithfully done, and allow Kunzel to offer a fresh perspective to these musicals in their orchestral settings. And as always Telarc provides its trademark audiophile-quality recording - surround sound quality with a sumptuous spatialiser such that you might be overwhelmed by the Phantom's laughter in the Phantom suite.

Kunzel contrasts the dramatic and lyrical sides of the PHANTOM and SUNSET BOULEVARD suites as if they were written for the Pops. The Phantom suite gains from a breathtaking organ introduction of the Phantom's theme, and from the contrasts in Music of the Night that match the lyrics perfectly, even without the cast album. The tender arrangement of Think of Me cleverly weaves the Angel of Music melody as a counterpoint, while All I Ask of You, complete with some of the details of the original orchestrations, makes a calming answer to Christine's Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again. The JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR suite depicts the contrasting and conflicting moods of this groundbreaking rock opera, from the contrasts in I Don't Know How to Love Him to the sheer anguish in Gethsemene (I Only Want to Say).

There are some interesting arrangements on this ALW offering, especially the arrangement of Don't Cry for Me Argentina from EVITA. Although some listeners might be offended when it transmorphs itself into the Ravel Bolero after doing an about-turn from its lush, Spanish feel, it still depicts Evita's rise to power and her manipulative trait in her character, well-suiting an orchestral concert arrangement of the tune and fitting in with the spirit of the musical. Another interesting arrangement is the rousing theme-and-variation finale of Any Dream Will Do from JOSEPH, which incorporates many different musical styles throughout the variations, from ballroom waltzing to jazz, movie music (Magnificent Seven) and circus-style music. I know some listeners might be offended, but in their own inimitable and creative way, Kunzel and the Pops still pay tribute to this early ALW musical by evoking the myriad of colours on the coat and the diversity of musical styles in the original JOSEPH musical. This arrangement certainly fits the trademark style of the Pops perfectly.

The only fault with this collection is in the arrangement of Memory from CATS. Here, this song is treated as a flat-out romantic ballad, rather than as the haunting anthem for respect that Grizabella sings. Nevertheless, the arrangement by Tommy Newsom (who wrote this arrangement for a Doc Severinson album) is innofensive to this well-loved ALW melody (this is the only arrangement that Crafton Beck or Steven Reineke didn't write for this album). Also, I wish that Kunzel had included Love Changes Everything and Whistle Down the Wind, but given the fact that this was a 1996 recording, ALW hadn't written Whistle down the Wind as yet. But these are minor caveats, since Kunzel offers much to savour in these infectuous and spirited performances.

Yet I still feel that Kunzel's ALW offering is a winner in its lush orchestral suite arrangements of his well-loved and great musicals, far superior to any shopping-mall synthesised arrangement. This would surely count towards another feather in Kunzel's cap and stand pride of place with his rousing offering of Rodgers & Hammerstein. I'm sure Lord Lloyd Webber would have been proud.

I waited for this for five years.......2006-06-30

Between Amazone, Ebay and Napster, I don't usually buy CDs anymore, and I usually wait till I can buy them cheaper "new and used". When this set came out, I was excited, mainly by Disc 5, but wasn't going to spend $70 on it. I waited till it was cheap enough, and got it for Father's day this year.
It was worth the wait.

The concept is great. The packaging is great. The recording is great. Disc five is really cool for an ALW aficionado. There are a few real gems on it; my favorites are Petula Clark's "I Could Have Given You More" and "Benedicite."
I've always thought "Gus the Theatre Cat" made a great medley on the piano with "Unexpected Song" and "I DOn't Know How to Love Him," but wished there was an alternate lyric to match the other two songs. Now that I know there *is*, and it's a good lyric, it's a dream come true.
The melody of "Benedicite" is one of my favorites from _Sunset_ (the book mis-identifies it as "SUrrender"; it's actually "The Lady's Paying" and "Eternal Youth is Worth a Little Suffering"). The lyrics are the canticle from Daniel 3, which comes up every odd Sunday in the Divine Office, so it's nice to have cool music to sing it with.

I haven't bought _By Jeeves_ or _THe Beautiful Game_ yet, to it was great to sample them.

There are other parts of the CD taht aren't found in my collection. I like CD 4 "The Hits."

But the selections on CDs 1-3 don't make sense.

First, any self-respecting ALW fan has the Original London Cast of _Phantom_, so six tracks are totally useless. Why not draw from the Canadian cast with Colm Wilkinson? Or pull out some obscure recordings never published.

Why two different tracks with Michael Ball singing "Love Changes Everything", yet they're hardly any different?

On Disc 5 is "It's Only Your Lover Returning," sung by Julie Covington. It's an early draft of the song (Lloyd Webber and Rice went through several suggested titles) and quite nice. The very thing one expects on a Boxed Set.
So why have the Julie Covington "Don't Cry for Me" on disc 1?? The only difference is a few words, but it's otherwise identical. Why not Elaine Paige or Patti Lupone or Madonna?

The _Evita_ section is otherwise the best, choosing a sample from each major recording, though I'd have chosen slightly differently (as above).

There is a great selection of "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer" from the Sydmonton festival, using the original music that was changed when _Cats_ went to Broadway_. It would have been nice if they'd included more recordings from Sydmonton, like the original lyric of "All I Ask of You" shown on the second DVD to the _Phantom_ movie.

With so many great actress-singers who've played Norma Desmond, why does the collection beat us over the head with Glenn Close?

Paul Miles Kingston must be set for life in royalties, for the number of albums the original recording of "Pie Jesu" has appeared on. "Amigos Para Siempre" is nice, but it reminds me of Shari Lewis's "The Song that Doesn't End," especially when it's been used on so many compilations.

In short, this is a great collection for the obscure material, if you can get it cheap. But for a boxed set, it's a poor sampling, drawn mostly from the most familiar recordings.

Excellent collection but BIG PUBLISHING MISTAKE! .......2006-01-10

Please beware they made a mistake on this. It's actually the shortened Ray Shell version of STARLIGHT EXPRESS from the original 1984 London cast - NOT the El Debarge single from 1987 like it says on the box. I don't know how they let that goof pass. Sorry to Ray Shell. Having said that, this is an outstanding compilation of Lloyd Webber's greatest hits.

ONE OF LLOYD WEBBER'S BEST COMPILATIONS, DESPITE A FEW FLAWS.......2005-03-21

Regardless of the fact that some of his latest efforts (most notably, The Woman in White) are disappointing, there can be little doubt that Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the greatest composers ever to work in the musical theatre. Ever since his "Jesus Christ Superstar" hit the stage in the early 70-is, it was clear that the conception and perception of musicals are never going to be the same again. Many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. Even though he's British, his influence on the shape of the modern musical theatre expanded over the West End boundaries long ago and has thus made an enormous impact on Broadway. Two of his shows ("Cats" and "The phantom of the opera") hold the record as two the longest running shows in the history of Broadway. He has also been the only composer to have three of his shows running at Broadway concurrently. Some of his awards include three Grammies, a Golden Globe, an Oscar and a bunch of Tony awards. But perhaps most of all, Lloyd Webber is responsible for bringing the musicals and the theatre appealing to the wide audiences, who in different circumstances would not consider seeing a musical. The secret of his success is probably the mixture of beautiful and catchy melodies, interesting subject matter (though some, like Starlight Express, are too thin) and grandiose staging.

Over the years many compilations of his work have emerged. In the late 80-is and early 90-is it was the "Encore" series and lately the one-disc collection called "Gold". The one in question here can be considered one of the best currently on the market. First, it includes a 3-disc selections from all of his shows, minus the latest one, i.e., "The Woman in White", which, considering the triviality of the score, is no great lost. The fourth disc covers some of his most known songs sung by the famous artists. Then, there is the fifth disc with previously unreleased material, most of which are the songs ALW wrote with Tim Rice for various artists during the 70-is. The disks are all neatly packed in a hardcover book that features 67 pages of pictures and text with information about each of ALW's shows. One of the other assets here is the perfect sound quality, since all of the tracks have been digitally remastered.

Here are my basic impressions and comments regarding the material on the discs:

* Disc #1 has the selections from "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita", "Cats" and "Song & Dance". The Superstar material mostly comes from the Concept Recording. Although the songs sound beautiful as always, their orchestration is a bit dated now. Only Steve Balsamo's "Gethsemane" from the 1996 revival cast has a modern rock sound. "Evita" comes with the material from all of the major recordings: London, Broadway and the movie productions, as well as the Concept album. No objections here; since this is one of ALW's most satisfying works, every song is just perfect, although Patti LuPone, the Broadway and overall the best Evita, is left with only a couple of lines. With the selections from "Cats", however, I have some doubts. A plus to the choice of the "Jellicle ball" impressive orchestral sequence from the 1998 movie version and "Mister Mistoffelees" from the 1981 London cast. One of the best known ALW's songs, "Memory", also comes from that album. It's a pretty version and Elaine Paige's rendition cannot be matched, but why include this when the definite version, featuring an 80-piece orchestra and Elaine Paige with much better interpretation, can be found in the same movie version. Thusly, one has to buy Elaine Paige's latest 2-disc compilation "Centre Stage: The very best of Elaine Paige" to get that one. And "Gus the theatre cat" is more a recital than a song, so there was not much point in including that. Marti Webb brings her vocal charm to the "Song & Dance" sequence, Sarah Brightman sings "Unexpected song" with her famous soprano, but as much as I like her version, Bernadette Peters, who was in this show on Broadway is strangely left out here.

* Disc # 2 starts with "Starlight Express". This was never one of my favorite ALW's shows; the plot is even lighter than in "Cats" and the 1984 original cast recording is terribly dated. Yet, here we have one terrific duet, "I am starlight" from the original together with three songs from the later revivals and it seems that fresh orchestrations were just the thing Starlight needed. My favorite remains a touchy ballad, "Next time you fall in love". "Requiem" is the most solemn of all ALW's compositions, written in 1985 to commemorate the death of his father. Placido Domingo's tenor rides together with the chorus all the way through the strong "Hosanna", only to be joined by Sarah Brightman in the final moments of this song. She then gives an echoing deliverance of "Pie Jesu". What can be said of ALW's next show, "The Phantom of the Opera"? A phenomenon in its own right, it's easy to see from the six numbers included here why this is one of the best and most beloved musicals of all time. The cast, the music, the story - everything is perfect. Although "Aspects of love" was never a popular hit, it does have some of the most beautiful love melodies ALW has ever written. "Love changes everything" sung by Michael Ball is probably one of the best tunes ever about love. The rest of the selected material here has a dreamy love flavor and the melodies find their way into your brain in the best Lloyd Webber way.

* ALW's first musical, "Joseph and the amazing Technicolor dreamcoat" was more successful in its revival form than the original from the 70-is. The three songs included here are sung by the show stars, Jason Donovan and Donny Osmond. Maria Friedman was not a lucky choice to play the narrator, as the track from the 1998 movie version shows. "By Jeeves" was ALW's only big flop when it came to the stage in the 70-is. The 1995 revival sounds much better though, full of funny numbers in the best manner of the musical comedy. "Travel hopefully" remains one of the show's highlights on this compilation. "Sunset Boulevard" comes
