Editorial Reviews

It took Hootie and the Blowfish more than four years to lick their wounds and get back into the studio after sales for 1998's Musical Chairs tanked--at least when measured again their 1994 debut, Cracked Rear View, which sold over 16 million copies. To prevent another commercial misstep, ?ber-producer Don Was was recruited to give their rootsy pop rock a tune-up and, to Was's credit, that's all he did. Was has cleaned up their folksy rock, turned up the guitars, and encouraged singer Darius Rucker to unleash his inner soulfulness. On songs like the simple but engaging "Little Brother," Rucker sounds like a modern-day Brenton Wood as he twists his elastic vocals around lyrics that impart a homespun tale about making one’s own luck. On "Little Darlin'," the band wades into country rock. A cover of the Continental Drifters features Drifters vocalists Vicki Peterson and Susan Cowsill. --Jaan Uhelszki

4 out of 5 stars Great Tunes!.......2007-07-22

I have always been partial to 'Hootie and the Blowfish'. This compilation of their best work is phenominal. I recommend it highly. Only complaint I have is that a few of the songs I don't care for. Still, I am very happy with this CD.

5 out of 5 stars How can this not be good?.......2007-07-22

The greatest 9 hit wonder band of all time!

How can this not be a good buy?

Instead of buying all the separate albums you can get this one!

I heard the singer is now working at a McDonalds in Cleveland, but I guess stardom does not last forever!

5 out of 5 stars Fan of mid 90's rock, this is a must collection, nothing missed........2007-01-25

Being in college in the mid-90's, who hadn't heard of Hootie and the Blowfish, they were huge and their album "cracked rear view" sold a total of 13 million. After that album, their follow ups only sold 2-3 million apiece, and for some reason they faded away. The music stayed as strong as the first album, but I guess that was just when they peeked. Well, this collection is the best hootie for the buck. It has all of the big ones off of Cracked rear view, as some songs from their other albums such as Tucker's town", which did well, but were overlooked. THis collection is awesome, and does sum up the "college rock" days of the past. Get this collection, its worth it, and not that expensive.

4 out of 5 stars 2 good songs missing, some duds here.......2007-01-17

Where is Hannah Jane and Drowning? Some of the later stuff pales in comparison to the quality of songs on their first two albums. Buy Cracked Rear View and Fairweather Johnson and you will have ALL of their good stuff! Hey, if 1996 ever rolls around again, these guys may become cool again.

5 out of 5 stars Hootie does it again!.......2007-01-11

This cd is very enjoyable to listen to. Upbeat, bluesy with a hint of rock. Hooties' soulful vocals are always a pleasure to listen to.

Cracked Rear View marks the commercial debut of these college buddies from South Carolina, and it sold an astonishing 13 million copies in its first year of release. With Darius Rucker's ringing baritone and Mark Bryan's muscular guitar framing Jim Sonefeld's bluesy, energetic southern folk rock tunes, it's easy to understand its success: It's the kind of thoroughly likable album people sing along with on the car radio. When Rucker demands, "Stand up and let me see you smile," there's something that feels real and convincing behind it; sure, it's a formula, but a sincere one, and it works over and over again. Songs like "Let Her Cry," "Hold My Hand," and "Running from an Angel" lay down the rhythm for a cohesive, feel-good collection. There may not be a lot of virtuosity behind it, but there's plenty of fun. --Barrie Trinkle

Being in college in the mid-90's , who didn't hear Hootie on their college rock station, and who didn't own this album. I dislike the fact that some people call this band a "one-hit" wonder. Yes, their first album (this one) was their most gigantic, but spawned 5 hits and other great songs. And their next album was no slouch either, selling 3+ million. Their sound is strong, original, and a great marker of that time, but it still is fresh today. A must have album in any collection of rock, many may try to imitate this sound, but nothing quite fits the nitch like Hootie and the Blowfish.

1 out of 5 stars Hootie and the Blowhards.......2007-01-04

This is perhaps one of the worst albums ever produced. While there are undeniably moments of pop catchiness, they fade within seconds. Furthermore, if you are masochist enough to subject yourself to any footage of the act, you will find a revolting arrogance that is so dreadfully misplaced that it will turn your stomach. The next time that you find yourself ever-so-briefly caught in that forgetful moment you will want to immediately destroy the device from which their putrid music emanates.

4 out of 5 stars Ionlywannabeewathyaaaoooouuuuuuuuuuuuuu..........2007-01-01

Yeah, Darius was a mumbler. But, so was every other successful frontman in those days.

It's funny what time does to an album like this. Cracked Rear View became a roaring success, then the public turned it's back on the band. Years later, nostalgia seeps in, people dust off their copy and give it another spin. Maybe they were a little hard on Hootie after the hype machine got cranked up to 11. Their career certainly crashed and burned, but they're not to blame. It's the industry's marketing gimmicks and the fickle public who never gave this band a second shot.

But, that's all over. What's left is a pile of albums nobody ever listened to and this one. It's ashame people aren't as turned off by hype these days as they were back then, because I can think of a hundred worse "artists" off the top of my head dominating today's Top 40 who couldn't hold a candle to Hootie & The Blowfish's talents.

Give these guys a second chance, because they DO have talent.

5 out of 5 stars Great start to awesome music!.......2006-11-19

This album is awesome... There is a reason that it sold 16+ million copies. Unfortunately it was overplayed and backlashed on the band, as is most music today. I will today and will always say that this is one of the best albums from the 90's/00's, as are all 6 of their albums.

4 out of 5 stars Doesn't Age Too Well.......2006-10-17

I will admit that I am perhaps viewing (listening to?) the record with a jaundiced eye (ear?), but as an occasional fan of Hootie and the Blowfish, it seems to me like this, of all their records, is the one that has aged with the least grace and comportment. That's not to say that it's a terrible piece of music, but rather that, at this point in my life, it is almost never what I want to listen to.

Perhaps I should clarify. This record is overplayed in ways that only truly abnormal cultural phenomenae can be overplayed. This record is overplayed the same way that Stairway to Heaven (and pretty much all of Led Zeppelin IV) is overplayed on classic rock stations. I was an adolescent in the nineties, and between listening to this music on the radio and listening to it on my own, I'm pretty much done with it.

That costs the record a star. Well, not just that. It's also not really the greatest musical adventure the group ever embarked upon. It's good, but I'm frankly a bigger fan of Fairweather Johnson (as an album) or Musical Chairs (for individual songs).

But, buying recommendations are what we're here for. If you're just a regular person looking for pretty much every Hootie and the Blowfish song you want, this is the record to get. This is the one that launched the band, and the one from which most of their radio songs are still drawn. And, truth be told, it's a solid record and a good addition to any collection. If, however, you're looking for the best that the band's done to date (to the extent of my knowledge--I lost track of them during the hiatus after the failure of Musical Chairs), I'd go to Fairweather Johnson first. If you don't like pop music at all, I'd steer clear entirely--you'll find nothing on this album to transform your opinion of the genre.

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' better than ever!.......2006-11-28

Get this CD (and DVD too)! It has the hits and coupled with the energy of a live performance it brings the songs to a higher level. I was lucky enough to see them during this tour and liked it better than their tours during their heyday in the mid-90's. Leave the "band du jour masses" and stick with an honest band with heart still producing excellent music!

5 out of 5 stars My secret guilty pleasure.......2006-09-30

Although I typically prefer my music to come for the 60's and 70's, I have to say that Hootie and the Blowfish are my secret guilty pleasure. I just love this band. Love the songs, the members, the voices - just the whole package. I also prefer Live recordings versus studio recordings. I have everything I love in this CD. Thanks guys for a great show!

Proudly wearing their reputation as the "ultimate bar band," Hootie & the Blowfish have proven decisively that in a pop-music taproom bristling with full-bodied micro-brews and exotic imports, there are plenty who still crave Budweiser--and often Bud Light. It's hardly surprising then that in compiling this rarities collection, the band invited its fan base to choose a third of the album's 15 tracks (and its cover design) by voting at the Web site of a beer company. The result is a de facto tribute to much of the band's own favorite music, from vintage staples such as Roy Orbison's "Dream Baby," "Use Me" by Bill Withers, and Zeppelin's "Hey Hey What Can I Do" (13.98% of the virtual pub poll) through R.E.M.'s "Driver 8," the Reivers' "Araby," and "Almost Home" (14.24%) to seemingly improbable choices such as an unplugged rendition of Tom Waits's "I Hope I Don't Fall in Love with You," Vic Chestnutt's "Gravity of the Situation," and the Smiths' "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" (13.11%). Even on Kim Richey's countrified "Let Me Be Your Man" (the poll topper at 15.47%), Darius Rucker and company display an uncanny ability to unify--and homogenize--seemingly disparate material into their own endlessly bubbly brew. Even if all of it doesn't all taste great, it's definitely less filling. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Great Rarities.......2006-11-01

An album that at first appears somewhat more eclectic than your average Hootie album. After a time of listening to it, the disparate styles of music, which cross from full-on bouncy pop (Araby) to mellow classics (Hey Hey What Can I Do?) to country (Fine Line) to golden oldies (Dream Baby), seem somewhat helter skelter in their scattering throughout this album. Yet after a while, the album seems to pick up a flow that almost begins to make complete sense. Sure, the styling is somewhat random, but the musical quality of the tracks selected, including a soulful live cut (I Hope I don't Fall in Love With You) allows the listener to enjoy the fullest range of Hootie's distinctive and easily identifiable sound. I am purchasing this album for a second time, since continuous play of the first copy left it so badly scratched that I am forced to purchase a second copy to make up for the unplayability of the first. I rate this album as perhaps the very best of all of Hootie's albums.

5 out of 5 stars If I Could Give This Album 10 Out 10 I Would.......2005-01-31

This album is definetely my favorite Hootie & the Blowfish album. I think that it is better than all of the other albums because it has some of the best songs on this slbum, like "Fine Line" and "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You" and "Use Me" those are my absoulte favorite songs of all the Hootie songs. I definetely recommened that you buy this album if you are a true Hottie & the Blowfish fan.

4 out of 5 stars Hootie Does No Wrong.......2004-06-14

The first time I saw Hootie and the Blowfish was in 1993 when I was a freshman at USC and they played a frat party I went to - I was completely hooked! They continue to be my favorite band! Darius has the most amazing and distinct voice - I can't get enough. The only reason this rating isn't 5 stars is because they didn't record my favorite 2 cover songs they used to do (maybe it's a copyright thing) --> "Mustang Sally" and "Love the One You're With." But I can't complain too much - this whole album is a treat!

4 out of 5 stars Something the fans deserved!.......2004-03-04

Finally, a collection of the stuff that for whatever reason, didn't make the original albums, or wound up scattered (get the title now?) over various soundtracks or import versions of the albums...all in one place. The band has been doing 54-40's "I Go Blind" for years. in fact it was recorded back during the Cracked Rear View sessions...appeared on the Friends TV soundtrack...Use Me has been a concert tune for a long time too...nice to see these and all the other songs together that up until this album have been a case of get 'em where you can find 'em. Thanks guys...and thanks for continuing to be consistently excellent...for those of you who STILL (!) aren't familiar with these guys, get their new Best Of collection...and this one...then go out and grab Cracked Rear View...and then the rest of 'em!

5 out of 5 stars The many faces of Hootie.......2003-11-06

Hootie & the Blowfish began as a kick@ss bar cover b and, and that reappears here with some great covers, along with awesome B-Sides. The diversity on this album is amazing. Fine Line is bluesy, I Go Blind explodes with trademark Hootie rock, then Almost Home shows off their more bluegrass side, before a Led Zeppelin cover rocks you, then Darius lets loose with one of most soulful, incredible vocal performances I've ever heard (Renaissance Eyes). And that's just the first five songs, a taste of what this album brings. There's an REM cover, original Hootie stuff, it's all different and it's all great. Forget what you may have heard about this band, if you love MUSIC get this and their other albums and you will not be disappointed

5 out of 5 stars Hootie & The Blowfish.......2007-01-09

My niece was having trouble finding this CD. Amazon always comes through for me. It arrived in a short period of time and in perfect condition.

2 out of 5 stars Not the wonderful Hootie I am used to........2006-07-17

I own four other albums and all of them are great. When I pop in a Hootie CD I expect to be relaxed by the soothing voice and the familiar sound that accompany one of my all time favorite bands. I buy CD's and keep those CD's on the premise that the entire CD is worth keeping. I am not buying a CD for one or two songs, but the CD as a whole. I just bought this album the other day. Half of the songs had the familiar feel but the rest could go to waste. I am giving it a 2.5, because half the album is great.

4 out of 5 stars Theyre back!.......2005-08-15

I have been a H&TB fan ever since cracked rear view. I can admit that there have been some sub-par albums put out. I was very excited the day in 2003 when the self titled CD came out, but I was quite dissapointed when I finally got the chance to listen to it. Musical Chairs had some good hits, but I couldnt listen to it cover-to-cover.

Last week when this CD came out I was hoping for the best and this time I think I got what I wanted. This album is definately more along the lines of Cracked Rear View and Fairweather Johnson.

There are only a few tracks I skip--Free to Everyone and Waltz Into Me. The rest is classic H&TB in my opinion. Hope everyone else enjoys it as much as I do!

3 out of 5 stars Decent but not as inspired as some of their others.......2005-03-02

Don Was was brought in to produce because of "disappointing" sales for the last CD "Musical Chairs". Largely he makes good decisions that take Hootie closest to the sound on their biggest-seller, debut "Cracked Rear View" (major label anyway..I don't want nitpicks from those who have the self-released demo "Kootchypop" and others...).

How great this is to you depends on whether you think "Cracked Rear View" is their best CD or not (I happen to think that honour goes to the sophomore CD "Fairweather Johnson".) The songs are pretty consistently tuneful, but there's not much artistic innovation.

Probably the biggest "stretch" is the reggae-ish tinge on "Little Brother" which works pretty well (despite an ill-advised use of ghetto slang. "flossin'"? C'mon guys..you're too old for that crap..) The rest are trademark Hootie with "Deeper Side", "Innocence" (were Hootie now passe, this would have been the big hit ballad from the disc), crumbing love affair anthem "Space" and the lovely (and modern sounding) "Tears Fall Down", which is probably the other experimental tune because of the loops used on it.

Low points are "The Rain Song", not so much because it's a bad song, but because of the use of backing vocalists Vicki Peterson and Susan Cowsill. I realize it's a cover of a song the pair wrote, but they just don't "mesh" well with Darius' voice. (The songs Darius did with Nancy Griffith worked better..) "Little Darlin'" never finds a compelling hook. Stratchy funk ain't what Hootie does best.."Go and Tell Him (Soup Song)" is another miss.

Bottom Line: It's not their finest work, but it's a good outing. Hootie fans will need it. Those who like melodic pop-rock will probably enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Definetley Different, But I REALLY like it.......2005-02-28

I really like this CD and if you liked any other Hootie & the Blowfish CD's you'll like this one. My favorite songs are "Tears Fall Down", "Little Brother", and "Innocence."

Dire as it might have appeared when Darius Rucker appeared strumming a guitar in full cowboy regalia on a fast food commercial, Hootie & the Blowfish have not gone belly up. In fact, the songs the band uncorks on Looking for Lucky are so quintessential Hootie, right in line with 1994's Cracked Rear View and its 1996 follow-up Fairweather Johnson, that the three middling discs sandwiched between them and this offering could justifiably be yanked from their discography. The first single "One Love" lifts its sentiment (and its title) from Bob Marley, rubbing the master's message of peace and love with shiny pop polish. "State Your Peace" reins in its heavy-handed theme by way of straight-up sunny rock (think "Only Wanta Be with You" doused with some substance). "Leaving" loosens genre constrictions with a new-school bluegrass cut-up. Even a waltz is a thrown in - a cool, hum-along kind of waltz that makes you want to hear more. Looking for Lucky should cancel all concerns that Rucker & company have a long future of hamburger-hawking. --Tammy La Gorce

2 out of 5 stars It's decent, but too homogenized.......2007-04-23

Like much of mainstream American music, Hootie & The Blowfish have found their groove and settled in a little too well. The songs all sound nice, but each bleeds into the next much too easily. I would mention standout tracks to try, but when songs barely deviate from their comfortable formula of an easy tempo and the same damn three chords... Close your eyes, point, and try a sample song. If you like the thought of 12 tracks of it, you'll be quite pleased with Looking For Lucky. As for myself, I think I'll look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Good,but..........2007-02-27

not as good as Cracked Rear View. It's a little more country than their previous albums if you can handle that.

The album did not dissappoint.. thank you Amazon

5 out of 5 stars Hootie Does it AGAIN.......2006-09-06

A solid "comeback" effort! Hey Sister Pretty is by far the best track on this cd. Funny..the kids (who don't particularly LIKE Hootie) were caught singing along to the song on the way to school after a few listens. State Your Peace, Can I See You, Get out Of My mind...I could go on! GET THIS CD!!

5 out of 5 stars Hootie's Back!.......2006-07-21

While it seems like a lifetime ago that Hootie was the "thing" in music, realistically they've been going downhill eversince the mid 90s. But to my surprise, Look For Lucky is a very good album from the first track to the last. I'm give the band much credit for staying together, perservering and releasing a high quality work.

5 out of 5 stars Not a dud on it........2007-02-19

Bit of a stretch giving it a five star rating I originally thought, but it really does deserve it. There are a couple of five-star songs on this album - America Street, and the quieter, sorrowful Sorry to a Friend, but every other one is a four starrer or very close. You won't be bothered getting up to skip any of these tracks while you're listening to Honour Among Thieves, and that makes a pretty good album as far as I'm concerned.

If you like James Taylor, Nickel Creek, The Waifs, or the quieter stuff by Garth Brooks or Lee Kernaghan, you'll be well served by adding this to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great songwriting and great singing add up to a great album........2007-02-07

Ediwn McCain's songwriting really shines on this album. The tracks "Sorry to a Friend" and "Solitude" are both destined to be classics among Ediwn McCain fans. Unfortunately, as others have mentioned, he has only had a few radio hits; "I'll Be" being his most popular, and another great example of beautiful lyrics and songwriting, although on a different album.

The tracks range from bluesy folk to light rock. The lyrics are often sublime, and always intelligent. McCain's voice is like a glass of fine whiskey; edgy and smooth at the same time.

Excellent album for those looking for something accessible, yet mature and engaging.

5 out of 5 stars The original, the best, and nearly the lost art.......2004-11-24

This is the album that introduced Edwin McCain to the world, and it is a wonderful amalgam of rock, blues, and jazz, featuring acoustic and electric guitars perfectly blended with saxophones and woodwinds, layered with Edwin's beautfully powerful voice. There is no other album out there with this particular sound.

If you have ever loved an Edwin McCain song, then you simply must get this album. Unfortunately, the woodwinds abruptly disappeared on his next few albums, only to reappear in the latest "Scream and Whisper". You'll appreciate them here.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Album of All Time.......2001-08-06

yup, this is it...the best of the best. Not even Edwin McCain has or will be able to outdo himself. This is what music is supposed to be. I will never get enough of it, it's just mind-blowing. Thank you Edwin for raising the bar, you define brilliance.

5 out of 5 stars The artist that 'popular' radio forgot!.......2001-04-24

The first time I heard "Solitude" I said to myself that if one iota of those lyrics had any truth that this guy was the greatest songwriter to live in the last 10 years! When I met Edwin and the band some time in 1996 and found it was a true story I knew he was the greatest songwriter that 'popular' radio would never appreciate. "Solitude" got me to buy the CD, "Jesters,..." made me a huge fan. Because of EMB I've become familiar with two other artists, Jeffrey Gaines and Pete Riley (/Treehouse), who both opened for EMB the numerous times I've seen them. If you like what you hear on the CD but have never seen EMB live you have no clue what you're missing. If you like EMB and you're looking for more fantastic artists check out Jeffrey Gaines and Pete Riley.

Folks tend to speak of populist folk-popsters Hootie & the Blowfish in surface terms. The first album, Cracked Rear View, they'll tell you, sold 15 million copies. Second disc, tsk, tsk--only a measly couple million--a real failure for this supposed supergroup. And now, for entry three, the pressure's on: Will Hootie reclaim the multi-platinum throne? But the lens is horribly out of focus here. The songs on Musical Chairs--rife with chiming Americana hooks, swimming in the rich, woodsy warble of one of modern rock's most definitive voices, Darius Rucker--are every bit as aesthetically sound, warm, and hometown charming as those that catapulted the band to fame. Who--outside of Atlantic Records bean counters--truly cares how much this one sells? From the opening feel-good affirmation "I Will Wait" through the punky pounder "Wishing" and the Calypso-flavored "Las Vegas Nights," to the gospel-jangled familial recollections "Home Again" and "One by One," this is one subtly beautiful effort, the kind that creeps up on you with each listening. The more you play it, in fact, the less you worry about how many of your peers have purchased it already. Put the calculator away. Enjoy great music the way it should be enjoyed--eyes shut and smiling. --Tom Lanham

5 out of 5 stars Only Lonely....the best song on the CD.......2007-03-11

The Song "Only Lonely" is the best song on this CD. Listen to the beautiful string section in this song! When you hear it behind Darius Ruckers great vocals it's like looking at a wonderful painting and enjoying all the colors of the painting. Outstanding! Saw Hootie & Blowfish sing this song live on David Letterman with a full string section and it sounded great! Also, this song clearly shows that a string section does indeed have a place in rock music. (The Beatles knew this too)By the way, does anyone have a copy of this show?

4 out of 5 stars Their best album.......2007-01-28

This one is a great album. Why it didn't catch on is a mystery to me. this is the definitive Hootie and the Blowfish album with some of their best songs.
I thought Cracked Rear View was overrated. Fairweather was too hit and miss. This was a perfect album front to back.
Their latest, Looking For Lucky is a close CLOSE second. But this one is the one I will always cherrish.

4 out of 5 stars My favorite Hootie album!.......2006-04-28

This is their most complete album they ever created. I think this is better than Cracked Rear View simply because it has aged better. It is also richer in sound and the vocals of Darius Rucker are more confident and more assured. Closet full of fear sends chills down my spine everytime I hear it. It is my favorite song by Hootie. Michelle Post is also a superb song with ironic lyrics and jangly banjos. Musical Chairs is simply beautifully crafted and it sound like they are having a great time. Cracked Rear view was about as consistent as Musical Chairs, but Hootie are more confident and more experienced with Musical Chairs. It is a great album to relax to and it doesn't rock out that much. They don't need to with a voice as rich as Darius Rucker's.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Chairs BEST.......2006-02-11

Ladies and Gentlemen let me tell you.. This album is the absolute best work from this band.. From beginning to end the lyrics are unbelievable and the closer you listen to and read the lyrics they begin to come from your own heart.. we have all been there in relationships and dating and every single song hits a key in my heart and the heart of fans everywhere.. "take a little bit of everything baby, it will be all right.. dont just settle for living the lie that i thought you might"

5 out of 5 stars Even Better than Cracked Rearview!!.......2005-10-15

I'm from Costa Rica and the songs from Cracked Rearview were known and popular in the radios even in my country but I tell you folks... this is even better than Cracked Rearview, I really enjoy listening to this record once and over again... it's amazing.. I can't get enough.. these guys are the best!

Of course, aside of Counting Crows, the best U.S. bands ever!

4 out of 5 stars Good Album but Just Not As Good As Original.......2006-01-31

I bought "Cracked Rear View" in '94 and couldn't wait for the next record to come out and in '96 I got my wish. This record is great, but it just didn't have all of what the first record had. I still really do like this record though. My favorite tracks on here are "Sad Caper" and "Old Man and Me". If you like Hootie then you should like this album.

5 out of 5 stars They Just Keep Getting Better and Better.......2005-01-31

Hootie & the blowfish have done it again, they have created some of the best music I have ever heard. One of my absoulte favorite Hootie songs is on here and that is the "Earth Stopped Cold at Dawn." Nanci Griffith (the girl in the song) does a great job at the harmony with Darrius. Anyways this is one of my favorite Hootie albums and definetley recommenend that if you want some easy listening too music, that you should definetley get this album.

3 out of 5 stars I May Want To Check Further.......2004-07-30

This is a better sounding album than what I first anticipated. I mean after all with "Cracked Rear Veiw" setting the world on fire like it did I would still like to meet "Hannah Jane"(namesake of my all time favorite Hootie song). I was first put off by this when the group decided that "Old Man and Me" was the first single to come off the album, but to me it was a huge mistake as it was tired sounding, and just dull. I'm glad that it wasn't the first song off this cd otherwise I may not have wanted to continue. I feel that the first song is one of thier greatest, and "Tucker's Town" I can still hear traces of "Hold My Hand". I've only given this a 3 star rating until I hear the rest of the album. It may change.

5 out of 5 stars Up yours sophomore slump!!!!.......2003-11-06

Forget whatever you've heard about Hootie & the Blowfish up until now. People who say they're soulless pop music have obviously never listened to (any of their music but especially) this album. The boys ROCK on here, turning up the guitars and letting Dariius loose. You cna hear it right away. Be The One is a big boot up the @ss lettin you know that Hootie's back and means business. Songs like Sad Caper and She Crawls away slow things down, but are guaranteed to move you. Meanwhile, Tucker's Town manages to rock while still saying something important, So Strange is back to full gear, as the boys craft the perfect anthem for a sunny day with your special someone. Here's a perfect test of Fairweather Johnson's mettle: wake up, put on Earth Stopped Cold At Dawn and look out your window. When the chills run down your spine (and they will), you know it's time to get this album.

4 out of 5 stars Took Seven Years to Appreciate It.......2003-08-09

I bought this album after its original release in 1996, and disliked it greatly. At the time I was twelve and had grown fond of their poppy tunes I had heard on the radio. After purchasing 'Fairweather Johnson', I was, more or less, bored. The songs are slow and not quite as catchy as their previous attempts, and for about seven years I placed this on my shelf and allowed it to collect dust. For some odd reason I picked this album up about two weeks ago and popped it into my stereo. I felt very much the same as I did seven years ago. Then I listened again and heard the words.

The lyrics are deep, the songs are sentimental, and now, seven years later, I can truly appreciate what this album is all about. Yeah, it's slower, but the songs have meaning. Ironically, 'Old Man & Me' is one of my least favorite tracks on this album, though I had enjoyed it when I first bought this album. It may take a while to grow on you...in my case it took nearly a decade, but I'm glad I gave it another chance.

My favorite tracks (in no particular order):
Tucker's Town
Sad Caper
Let it Breathe (my personal favorite)
Fool
Tootie
So Strange

Give it a chance. That's all I ask.

2 out of 5 stars BBD's Hootie Mack is a displaced dud................2007-04-24

Plainly put. No where near exciting or even listenable as Poison.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated Album - Y'all Slept on this one Big Time!.......2006-06-21

Hootie Mack was an impressive follow up to Poison. By all accounts this sophomore offering is lyrically, musically and socially superior to the multi platinum CD that came before it. So why is it that no one can recall catchy grooves like "Above the Rim", "Show Me the Way", "Lost in the Moment", "Lovely" and a host of other jams from booty shakin' to bedroom slow grinds?
Oddly, the album did not receive the proper radio, video, concert & PR it was entitled and inevitably became another casualty of the recording business machine. As a result, you have a terribly underrated album that sits in countless used CD bins. If you see this one in the cut-out bin - cop it!

5 out of 5 stars Ricky Bell is a slow song king.......2005-10-14

I loved the vibe of this album. Its getting terrible reviews but see for yourself. The album is worth buying just for the song, " Something in Your Eyes " . This song is the reason that Ricky Bell should not stop singing. He can blow like no other. " Please Come Back " and " Lost in the Moment " are great tracks as well. Fatim who ? I dont think he could come close to that of Mr. Bell. Ricky Bell did a solid job and MCA buried this CD, not BBD . BBD can still hang with anything put out there in this day and age.

2 out of 5 stars A Terrible Album with some hidden jewels.......2005-07-23

As a whole, this album really REALLY sucks, but. BUT, it just may be worth the buy for some New Jack Enthusiasts. Three tracks save this album from hitting the trash cans: "Something in your eyes", "lost in the momment" and "Above the rim." "Something in your eyes" is perhaps one of the best R&B New Jack swings songs that never was. It never got the recognition it deserved, but has always stuck with me over the years. "Above The Rim" actually kinda sucks, but Michael Bivens verse always gets me going and is the only reason I mentioned this song. The ryhmes he spits are off the hook folks in "Above The Rim." The song "lost in the momment" is a little too simple for my taste, but it still manages to drift the listener away like any good R&B track from '95 can. BOTTOM LINE, if you are down with New Jack Swing and mid 90's R&B, this album is a MUST, otherwise, PASS.

1 out of 5 stars Shame On You Guys.......2005-03-15

Bell Biv DeVoe half or spin-off of the group New Edition drop fall short with second release. Nothing close to Poison, so don't be surprised. Nothing on here seems to hold my attention either. The only reason I gave it a one star is because of tracks 9 and 10. Both "Something In Your Eyes" written by the great Babyface and "Please Come Back" are slow jams that you can play continiously over and over again.
