5 out of 5 stars One of my top 10 favorites.......2007-06-20

Paul Rodgers went on to sing lead for Bad Company. I have purchased this music 4 times. First on vinyl, then cassette and twice on CD when it got broken. Worth every penny for such awesome rock 'n roll!

5 out of 5 stars Free - The Classic Rock Defined.......2007-03-27

Today Free is best known for their huge classic rock anthem "All Right Now" which still gets played daily on classic rock radio. The song is indeed an all time AOR classic and is the closing track on the "Fire And Water" album. Free got fairly big in the years that they were together, but have been somewhat eclipsed by the subsequent success of Bad Company which morphed out of Free after the original band called it quits. Of course both Free and Bad Company were fronted by one of the great rock vocalists of all time Paul Rogers, and he is in fine form throughout this release. "Fire And Water" was the band's 3rd album and one where they really gelled together to form the backbone of what would become the patented AOR sound of the 70's. There are lots of good songs here including the title track, "Mr Big", "Oh I Wept", "Remember", "Heavy Load", and "Don't Say You Love Me". The music is blues based rock with Rogers soaring vocals up front and lots of tasty guitar from the underrated Paul Kossoff who would unfortunately pass away not long after the band's demise. Rogers and Kirke would go on to fame and fortune with Bad Company. Free is one of those classic rock bands that often go overlooked, but if you were ever a fan of the more popular Bad Company you might want to check out Free. This album in particular is one of their best.

5 out of 5 stars Rock On.......2007-03-09

Back when rock was still cool, these guys broke it down to its basic components and spit it back at us. Oh so fine.

5 out of 5 stars their finest hour .......2005-12-31

free the blues rock band fronted by paul rodgers who now fronts queen...whoever you think this is not the point of this review this review is about "fire and water" the classic masterpiece that has gone down in history for one song "all right now"
yeah it's a fantastic song but there is 7 other songs you know
etc..oh i wept, heavy load remember...paul rdgers had a great vocal delivery on this album and the rest of the band play to form a tight knit union CLASSIC CLASSIC CLASSIC

5 out of 5 stars they were really big.......2005-10-19

Free is a very underestimated band. The group emerged from the british scene that was mixing blues and rock roots to create what later would be called "heavy metal".
The band was formed by the same Zeppelin manager, but their destiny were a little bit different.
they started very heavy, very bluesy, with "Tons os Sobs".
Here, on "Fire and Water", they're they are playing slow, smooth, passionated. We have Andy playing sweet piano parts, along with accurated bass lines, alng with tender and very rock Guitar from Kossoff and his "bandings" nodded even by Eric Clapton.
Paul Rodgers is in great shape, with simple and souring vocal for simple and souring lyrics he created.
Kirke was always a negative point. He should play not ina rock band, but in a military band playing marchs. That was the only thing he knew at the time, and alive was even worse.
All tunes are very nice, but i'll pick up some: "Fire and Water", "Oh I wept!", "Remember", "Mr. big" and "All right now".
Recently, a sad version of "All right Now" was helping GM to sell cars here in Brazil. Very sad to see rock n' roll selling products, but this is not the point here. Just listen to this record, not expecting a hard rock album, but a good and smooth rock n' roll from the early seventies.
This album is a peak they would never reach again.

5 out of 5 stars The Best English Blues Rock Album Ever *.......2006-04-12

* with the possible exception of Derek & the Dominoes

However if you mix both bands and shake well you get Lynyrd Skynyrd. That's right , the sustain Allen Collins practised so hard to obtain is all over this record. When the reissue came out(with bonus tracks),I took my regular copy and put it in my step-daughters car CD player and told her to enjoy. She's 24 and hasn't quit listening to it yet. That was three years ago!The blues-rock-soul wail of Paul Rodgers Transends Generations. This is quite frankly ,the best record Free ever made. And could very well be the very best record to come out of the English blues-rock scene(Derek & the Dominoes included too many americans to be considered British!).Dynamic from begining to end. The obvious songs are "All Right Now" & "Fire and Water". however , the others are every bit as strong. "Mr. Big" , "Heavy Load" and "Oh I Wept" are extraordinarily awesome. Paul Kossoff before the drugs ravaged his concentration. Andy Fraser at his thunder-loping best.Simon Kirke is the heartbeat every band needs (and Bad Company later enjoyed).Paul Rodgers is simply the best rock singer since , since , well probably since his inspiration , Otis Redding.

Hyperbole , perhaps. I couldn't begin to give an objective review of this record. Quite frankly it changed my life. It must be heard to be believed. What A Band!

5 out of 5 stars Free at the peak of their powers.......2006-04-12

1970's Fire and Water was Free's third album, and the one which made them international stars. They were featured at the Isle of Wight Festival that year; the liner notes to this CD tell of how Pete Townshend approached the group on the ferry over to the Isle of Wight and congratulated them on the success of "All Right Now."

And they certainly deserved it--on Fire and Water, Free are hitting on all cylinders for sure. This was the best thing Paul Rodgers ever did, bar none; closest match might be Bad Company's eponymous 1974 debut. Paul Kossoff's guitar playing shows just why Eric Clapton wanted to learn how to get the kind of vibrato Kossoff was getting out of his Les Paul (which totally floored Kossoff--hadn't everyone been saying, just a few years previously, "Clapton is God"? Talk about affirmation!). Andy Fraser and Simon Kirke make up one of the most solid rhythm sections in the history of rock 'n' roll. And the songs? And how!

The title cut absolutely smokes--'nuff said. "All Right Now" was a hit, and deservedly so; 36 years later, this bluesy tale of picking up a girl and trying to hit on her still rocks. "Oh I Wept" has enough soul to have done Otis Redding proud. The bonus tracks are nice, if not terribly essential. The remastering is crystal clear and very warm. The only question I have is this: Why has Island's UK office been the only one to step up to the plate? A&M was the band's US label (not to mention the US label of several other Island artists, such as Fairport Convention), and apart from the Molten Gold 2 CD anthology from 1993, they haven't bothered. Thank all the gods of rock 'n' roll somebody did; kudos to Island.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Album Ever!.......2006-01-22

I was absolutely shocked from the very first time I heard this album;this has never been done before and still to this very day nothing in the same greatness has come along.I mean this band is tight!Paul Rodgers is the best singer that ever lived, this man has so much soul that he excells in everything he does whether it is Free,Bad Company,The Firm,The Law or even Queen.
This album is the definitive Free Album and the best album ever recorded, with classics like "Fire and Water", "Mr. Big","All Right Now","Heavy Load" and many more.It defnitely has a touch of soul, hard rock and even blues to a certain extent!

5 out of 5 stars All right... then and now.......2005-12-28

This is it... the album that countless bands still refer to as the inspiration and starting point for their own musical efforts. If you have never heard of Free before or maybe you've just heard the huge single lifted from it - All Right Now - then buy this with confidence. This is Free's watershed album - it marks the band's shift from its blues roots and tackles the dilemma of popular acceptance versus critical acclaim head on. The band is at its zenith - Kossoff's playing is agonisingly great, Fraser's bass playing superb; Kirke's drumming deceivingly effortless; Rodger's singing - just brilliant, as always. Even your grandma would like this album... there's something for everyone on it.
Yes all the tracks appear on other compilations - go for it if that's your thing, but if you want to own a bit of rock history, get this album...

5 out of 5 stars My personal best Free album.......2004-07-06

Being a huge fan of the band, I would say Fire and Water is the strongest Free showcase. Rodger's voice just gets better and better, and Kossy's vibrato is at it's pinnacle. I like the mix of ballads and rockers, and naturally you have "All Right Now" as the outro. For me, it all starts to go downhill for Free after this disc. A must for anyone who appreciates 70's Rock.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I can name that tune in three notes.......2005-02-19

My family likes to put this disc in on shuffle and play name that tune. I wish they made more discs like this, only with more obscure works.

5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous CD.......2004-10-14

The Idiot's Guide to Calssical Music is an awesome Cd for those people who want to have a tiny sample of all the great classical compositions. Track 61 and 63 are my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!.......2002-03-20

Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music.

If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.

The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.

I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Sampler.......2001-11-09

For the beginner. You will be surprised at how many of the 99 themes you recognize here. It is an easy introduction to classical music. Nice booklet too.

5 out of 5 stars Useful........1999-03-22

Take it for what it is, a clever and useful GUIDE to classical music. No, it is NOT an uncut rendition of Beethoven's 9th symphony. It IS a cd that will jog your memory. You have heard many of the tunes presented here, but not always knowing what the work was. This is your chance to catch up with all the great classical music you have been exposed to. Cheap too.

The pristine tones and lilting melodies of the Celtic harp are immediately inviting. Celtic Harpestry, a companion to a PBS performance special, explores a sound both traditional and modern in a tasteful and evocative collection. This isn't a purist's album--half of the harpists aren't even from the Celtic isles, and among the album's old Irish chestnuts is "My Heart Will Go On," the love theme from Titanic. The otherwise-joyful Belfast Harp Orchestra tromp through the James Horner tune, almost pulling some subtlety out of its overwrought themes. Turlough O'Carolan, the blind patron saint of the Celtic harp, might wish he were deaf as well, if he could hear it. But the bard would be thrilled to hear the 12-piece BHO playing the traditional "Brian Boru's Set" or one of founder Janet Harbison's zephyrlike originals. Her "Earth, Water, Wind and Fire" elicits shifting textures and colors that belie their traditional roots. The song also exemplifies the ethereal side of the Celtic harp explored on Celtic Harpestry with artists like Rüdiger Oppermann. Playing a wire-strung harp accompanied by bass and keyboards, the German harpist soars through crystalline melodies whether he's playing traditional tunes or originals. The most traditional sound actually comes from the American players. Cheryl Ann Fulton gives a straight-up rendition of "Breton Medley," and jazz harpist Deborah Henson-Conant is refreshingly restrained, faithfully rendering "Londonderry Aire (Danny Boy)" and "The Minstrel Boy." Although Celtic Harpestry focuses on slow airs, there are robust performances here, including those by Máire Ni Chathasaigh's group and the harp and vocal duo of Sileas. Outside of the Titanic love theme, Celtic Harpestry is an elegantly wrought collection. --John Diliberto

4 out of 5 stars Celtic Meets Classical.......2007-07-12

Hard rock it ain't. Celtic Harpestry: A Contemporary Celtic Collection may cite "contemporary" in its title, but the style is classic. Rich harmonies and intricate musical textures rise to a crescendo in "Earth, Water, Wind And Fire," the final cut, performed by the Belfast Harp Orchestra.

This collection overlaps several genres. Celtic, classical and New Age meet in what may be the instrument most associated with classical melodies.

If you are a fan of Rap or Hip Hop, keep looking. If you want a hoedown, this is not going to be your cuppa joe. But if you are looking for something elegant - background music for a business or important meeting, for example - this is a wonderful, understated choice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Celtic Cd.......2006-12-30

A sibling to "Harpestry," this is a wonderful cd. I am a harper and head up a Celtic Harp Choir at my church (I'm a fulltime church music director), and I have used this cd as a model for my musicians. It's very pleasant to listen to, and you definitely get a good feel for the Celtic style. I highly recommend this!

5 out of 5 stars Just lovely!.......2003-05-25

This uplifting compilation CD from Imaginary Road Records, actually the soundtrack to the public television special "Celtic Harpestry at Lismore Castle, Ireland", is simply beautiful. Especially wonderful are the five numbers by the Belfast Harp Orchestra, an ensemble of 12 harpists who demonstrate remarkable intonation and stunning coordination as they play together on instruments that are difficult enough just to play alone. What a great concept, and what great musicianship! Also featured are individual performers such as Maire Ni Chathasaigh on Irish harp, Rudiger Oppermann on wire-strung harp, Cheryl Ann Fulton on a contemporary lever harp, the harp and song duo Sileas, and Deborah Henson-Conant on a "Camac `Baby Blue' Celtic electroharp". Other instruments, including Uilleann pipes and whistle, violin, viola and concertina, occasionally join in, but the focus is on the harp itself. In all its many forms and combinations, the harpestry on this recording remains soothingly delicate in timbre while at the same time scintillating in technique--in short, a pure delight. If you enjoy "Celtic Harpesty", you're sure to like it's companion release, "Harpestry: A Contemporary Collection", featuring more of a worldwide assortment of harpers. Another great harp compilation CD is "Faces of the Harp" from Narada.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2001-08-30

I always had a desire to learn to play the Celtic harp...and the PBS special and especially this CD made that desire boil over. Don't buy another harp CD before you've listened to this one!
No matter how many times I have listened to this recording, I ALWAYS break into a smile when the Belfast Harp Orchestra begins to play. Nothing prepares you for that 12-harp sound!
Order this CD with overnight shipping!!!

5 out of 5 stars The best harpestry CD!.......2001-07-23

One day in a music shop, my hand knocked three CDs off of a rack. The first CD, though the case was cracked, caught my eye. I bought it five minutes later. In this sweetly harmonized collection, nearly all the songs are wonderful. I would have bought the CD for only My Heart Will Go On-the song is a skillful take of the Titanic (movie) theme, and it seems almost to have a voice of its own. This is a must-have for any harp music lover!

2 out of 5 stars It's only snippets of the music!.......2006-02-12

This CD only contains 30-60 second long snippets of each of the pieces. It could be a teaching tool but is not something you can just put on to listen. It does contain reference to popular TV and Film works that contain the music.

5 out of 5 stars fantastically written!.......2001-09-17

I think that this is the most unsettling, most chaotically written, most upseting CD. I loved it. i think the whole...strange manner of the scherzo was just brilliant and the sparatic hits of the entire orchestra in fire was so... i can't even find the words.

5 out of 5 stars A great oratorio.......2001-08-20

Penderecki recently told a French music newspaper that Messiaen and him probably were the last composers to work on big scale oratorios. With all due respect, he is wrong. Mr Goldenthal proves with Fire water paper how magnificently he is able to compete with his glorious predecessors.

First, I am amazed by the perfection of the architecture. It's not so easy to build a 30-minute-long movement with no holes nor weaknesses. Here, we can hardly find an unuseful bar, and we can follow step by step the progression of the music - as we can in Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique, for example.

Then, the mixing of different elements (western and oriental cultures, various languages...) could lead to a complete cacophony, but such is not the case: we hear the American Anthem played on electric guitar rigth in the middle of a Mahler-like movement, and we find it perfectly natural - almost obvious. This is not only linked to Mr Goldenthal's craftmanship, in my opinion, but also to his sincerity in working on such a difficult subject.

Lastly, we find here again the usual skill of Mr Goldenthal in dealing with boychoirs, wind sections, rythms and orchestration.

I am not completely pleased with the performance, but it is good enough not to spoil the neverending pleasure of listening to this music.

Note: all the French music magazines have rated this oratorio their highest scores, and God knows they are usually tough with young composers!

5 out of 5 stars Goldenthal's work poingant and emotional.......2000-03-03

I am currently studying the Vietnam War and its impact on the world of art. I presented this recording to my Art History class as an example of how the war affected art music and my classmates and myself were amazed. This work has somehow managed to encompass every aspect of the war with amazing clarity. Yo-Yo Ma's performance is jaw-droppingly fantastic and the choruses and orchestra project the emotions clearly.

4 out of 5 stars mystically beautiful.......2000-01-21

I have only given this recording four stars, because the recording itself is not the best. For the most part it is very good, however the sopranos tend to sharp miserably in the big Forte chorale sections, and the balance between the different choirs, and between the choirs and orchestra leaves something to be desired. This is the first Goldenthal recording I have ever heard, and I was blown away. It constantly teaters between sometimes less than beautiful A-tonality and passionate beautiful sound. The rythmic conventions employed by Goldenthal in the second movement are extremely effective, and moving. This is an incredibly powerful piece of music, that leaves me in awe after every listening. This recording is well worth the money, you will not be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars An Interesting Holst Omnibus.......2006-08-17

This CD brings together disparate small works of Holst, as well as recordings made in two different decades. So we have very good analog recordings of the choruses made in the mid-70s and quite decent digital recordings made in the early 90s. The unifying element is the English Chamber Orchestra--a fine choice for the assignment, of course. Holst is in their blood, and even if Sir Yehudi isn't a noted Holst specialist (at least that I know of), his performance of the "Perfect Fool" ballet music is very spirited and attractively colored. Menuhin's performance is pretty much the equal of Adrian Boult's reference recording of this music. Plus Menuhin has much more modern sound.

The other orchestral works are well handled, too, I think, especially the Fugal Concerto--given a sprightly reading--and A Somerset Rhapsody, droll music given an equally droll reading. I have heard more engaging performances of the delightful "St. Paul's Suite," but this is certainly a decent job. And I'm not familiar with "Brook Green," which isn't Holst at his most memorable anyway.

As for the choral music represented here, this is Holst at his most solemn and meditative. If your tastes run more to "The Planets" than to the "Choral Symphony" and "Choral Fantasia," this may not be your cup of tea. But I think Holst had a unique approach to choral music and find the "Six Choruses" both interesting and entertaining. The Dirge moves me in the same way as the war poetry of Wilfred Owen or Walt Whitman does. In fact, this is a setting of one of Whitman's more famous Civil War poems--a very effective setting, with apropos contributions from brass and percussion. Written in 1914, before the outbreak of the First World War, the Dirge anticipates the "Mars" section of "The Planets" written a couple of years later.

So this disc represents a strange mix of Holst music, but it is all effectively performed and recorded--just the thing to fill in gaps in your Holst collection. More authoritative readings may be found in Decca's British Music Collection box set, but I opted for the modern sound accorded Menuhin and Humphreys on this Classics for Pleasure disc and am quite happy. The price is certainly right!

5 out of 5 stars Elegance in sound.......2007-05-13

McKellar has one of the finest tenor voices I have heard. There is a range that is broad, while keeping a very masculine sound. I learned that he was trained classically and gave up opera after a season or two to do concert singing. These songs have lush or spare orchestral arrangements as the occasion demands. They are dramatic, even Hollywood-like, arrangements verging on schmalt, but a second hearing convinced me that he was among the finest tenors of the 20th century and the arrangements are "just right."

5 out of 5 stars Scottish Songs for a Lifetime.......2007-05-12

If I was to be only able to carry one CD with me to a desert island, this one might be my choice. The poetry of Robert Burns is entirely inspiring. The vocal performance of McKellar is adequate to Burns' work. The orchestration is rich and appropriately simple. These songs will "stick to your ribs" and leave you longing for a visit to the old sod to personaly perceive the beloved ambiance they evoke.

5 out of 5 stars Simply exquisite!.......2007-05-06

Who can sing like this today? Vocalion has done it again -- two of Kenneth McKellar's wonderful Decca recordings from 1961 and 1962 brought together for a wonderful vocal treat. There are things the lover of the English art song and ballad cannot be without -- Jennifer Vyvyan's lovely renditions of Michael Head's Foxgloves and Roger Quilter's Love's philosophy; Eileen Farrell's stentorian Sing to me by Sydney Homer; John Mark Ainsley's rhapsodic performance of Quilter's Go, Lovely Rose, and Kenneth McKellar singing Land of Heart's Desire, Sleeps the Noon in the Deep Blue Sky and Robert Burns' My love is like a red, red rose. Happily, these songs are preserved on this terrific release. McKellar had a wonderful, powerful and lyric tenor voice. His operatic and oratorio singing is moving on top of being very musical -- dynamics, portamento, etc., scrupulously observed and artistic; however, his sining of art songs, folk songs and ballads is exemplary and always, underscored ALWAYS moving and right on the mark. McKellar had a real affinity for this music and it simply erupts from the grooves (oops, I'm dating myself)!

The Songs of Robert Burns is lovely -- I defy anyone to listen to McKellar's rendition of My love is like a red, red rose, and come away without a tear in the eye. In my opinion, however, the true gem is the release of McKellar's Songs of the Hebrides. Vocalion includes McKellar's spoken introductions to these songs and it is incredible. One might think that it would sound trite, but McKellar is right on the mark and the introductions make the songs that much more memorable. Marjory Kennedy-Fraser is surely smiling down from heaven as this is the most beautiful and atmospheric recording of her Songs of the Hebrides. McKellar scales down his powerful voice for Land of Heart's Desire and it is ravishing. No one comes away unmoved. Again, who can sing like this today? I tried to think of any tenor or baritone singing today that could come close to this kind of a performance -- I could not think of one. Thank you Vocalion for bringing these performances back to light. Speaking of the recording, it is lush, with that beautiful early stereophonic sound preserved. For the lover's of the art song, ballad or folk song, you MUST have these performances.

3 out of 5 stars Love and frustration.......2007-03-08

This recording has some wonderful Scottish songs by a super Scottish tenor. The difficult part for me is that I need the sheet music to go with one of the songs, but I had no luck locating it anywhere. There are other versions of the song ("My heart's in the highlands") available but none like this one. Is there any chance you could help me find it??

Sincerely,
Lyndall

5 out of 5 stars ENGLAND, THEIR ENGLAND.......2004-05-30

Previn has a conspicuous penchant for 20th century English music, both the music I am myself enthusiastic about such as Britten and Walton and the kind for which my mania is rather muted such as Holst and Vaughan Williams. I was therefore expecting a lot of this disc and I have not been disappointed.

Britten did not always dislike Brahms, and even after he had gone off him in general he retained his admiration for the D minor concerto. For me, the start of the Sinfonia da Requiem should create the same kind of impact as the start of that mighty effort, and it absolutely does as Previn gives it. The peremptory call to attention, the glowering sense of hostility as well as tragedy, the lapse into uneasy quiet - this is the way I feel it should be. First impressions count as no other impressions do, and Previn had got me on his side right away. The rest was plain sailing, across a dark sea admittedly, and the power and the sadness of this great and probably still undervalued work are as strongly conveyed as I think I can ever remember.

East Anglia is a part of the country that I am particularly fond of, and Crabbe is a poet who gets through to me. There is something I find hypnotic about the peculiar `tramp tramp' of Crabbe's couplets at their best, so music that evokes that coast both directly and via its own poet is music that I start predisposed to. First impressions helped again, and in the first number `Dawn' Previn's tempo struck me as perfectly judged, with the `lento' not too slow and the sense of drifting mist perfectly caught. The later extracts were pretty much ideally to my taste too, the contrasts in mood strong and effective but not overplayed, and the final grim passacaglia caught the mood as I imagine it powerfully indeed - Crabbe humanised but not sentimentalised.

Hardy's Wessex , and Hardy's novels, have always been a `dead zone' in my own sensibility, and that sadly coincides with a lifelong inability to respond to the school of English music that includes Holst. I suppose I can be `objective' about the Holst pieces here, but hardly in the best sense. They are obviously very well done, and Previn's handling of Egdon Heath, more rhapsodic than say, Boult's, is, I would guess, likely to win admirers among aficionados of the work. I can't say how well it evokes that part of the country because the only places I know in Dorset are Bournemouth and Lyme Regis. I can however report that the playing of the LSO is admirable - in my view Previn worked marvels with them whatever battles that involved - and the recordings, made in 1975/6 and much admired in The Gramophone, are unexceptionable even if not quite outstanding by the highest up-to-date standards. There are not likely to be better accounts of any of this music for some time to come.

We were looking for a good source to introduce our children (4 and 6) to various classical composers and melodies. We had tried one of the Baby Einstein tapes, but all the music was done on synthesizers. This compilation is done with real orchestras.
It has been a great tool in getting the kids familiar with all different types of composers - from Baroque and Classical, to Romantics and someone modern composers.
