Product Description
Taken from the band's 2003 album Chutes To Narrow, the title track is backed with 3 non-album tracks 'Baby Boomerang', 'New Slang' (live at the Knitting Factory, LA Feb. 2003) & 'So Says I' (video). Sub Pop. 2004.
The title track "Fighting in a Sack" is a very fast-paced song, very bouncy and fun. However, the reason to buy the single is for "Baby Boomerang", which is probably the best b-side the Shins have ever released. It wouldn't feel out of place on "Chutes Too Narrow", so if you liked that album, you're almost sure to love it. The live New song with Iron & Wine could have been done better, but nevertheless it is a great inclusion.
5 stars for the single and 2 stars for the price [...] If you can find it cheaper, do not hesitate to pick it up!
PS: My nickname's not Shin because of 'The Shins', I'm not that much of a fanboy.
The first track is "Fighting in a Sack," which is the exact same mix as the one off of the incredible album "Chutes Too Narrow."
"Baby Boomarang" is definitely a B-side track from "Chutes Too Narrow." It's not a bad song at all, but it does not fit with the feel and overall sound of the album itself. Songs like this will be played at full length concerts, since it has more power backing it than the album itself.
The final audio track, a live recording of "New Slang" is definitely designed to hook in people who have fallen in love with the movie and the sounds of "Garden State." I am a huge Iron&Wine fan, but was sorely disappointed by this track. Recorded at the semi-intimate Knitting Factory in LA, the recording lacks the proper mastering of a well-recorded live track, and although the CD single says Iron&Wine is featured on the track, it is not pronounced at all. Vocally he blends in with the band, and instrumentally was suspicioiusly absent.
This CD-single also includes a video for the song "So Says I," which is quite bizarre in that it is primitively computer animated and seems to profile 20th century Russia with the use of penguins. Not a great music video, but just another perk of this single.
Personally, I'm glad I have it for the song "Baby Boomerang," and I would recommend it to any true Shins fan, but for anyone else it will be a poor CD investment.
